A Peaceful Coastal Town…Threatened by a Storm of Secrets

It's 1916 when newspaper woman Anna McDowell learns her estranged father has suffered a stroke. Deciding it's time to repair bridges, Anna packs up her precocious adolescent daughter and heads for her hometown in Sunset Cove, Oregon.

Although much has changed since the turn of the century, some things haven’t. Anna finds the staff of her father’s paper not exactly eager to welcome a woman into the editor-in-chief role, but her father insists he wants her at the helm. Anna is quickly pulled into the charming town and her new position…but just as quickly learns this seaside getaway harbors some dark and dangerous secrets.

With Oregon’s new statewide prohibition in effect, crime has crept along the seacoast and invaded even idyllic Sunset Cove. Anna only meant to get to know her father again over the summer, but instead she finds herself rooting out the biggest story the town has ever seen—and trying to keep her daughter safe from it all.

I enjoyed getting to  know Anna and how independent she was. The story takes place in 1916 when prohibition was gong on. It was interesting to see Anna and her daughter Katy travel to Sunset Cove after hearing that Anna's father had a stroke. Anna is a bit apprehensive about going since she has not been on good terms with her father. Being home again brings old hurts up for Anna , but maybe this will be a time for her and her father to heal and forgive each other.

I really liked Katy and how she took to her grandfather right away. She decides to help her grandfather recover and it was nice to see a bond form between them. Anna's father asks her to run the newspaper while he is recovering and that's when the story really gets interesting. To say that Anna ruffles a few feathers at the newspaper office is an understatement. Someone seems to think he is in charge and is quickly demoted. I could feel the tension in the air as Anna begins to make changes in the office. Not everyone believes a woman should be in charge, but Anna reminds them that women did get the right to vote so they can keep their opinions to themselves.

There is a big secret in the community and Anna is set to find out what is going on. She doesn't seem to worried about her safety and is determined to unearth the crime. Rumors are going around that liquor is being smuggled and some members of the town are involved. I did like the mystery surrounding who it was and the danger the author included to give the story a little intrigue. It's a nice story that isn't just about crime but about forgiveness and reuniting a family.

I can't really explain this but I had jitters the whole time I read this book. It gave me anxiety and I felt overwhelmed by the story. I don't believe in love at first sight, but think you need to get to know each other better. Tara bothered me because she captures Luke's attention and immediately decides he is the one. Luke feels the same and before we know it, they are engaged.

The more I knew about Tara the more I believed she needed to slow down. She has just lost her parents and seemed to be making hasty decisions that she never quite seemed sure of. Luke was kind but very demanding and had a tendency to bully for what he wanted. There are a few parts in the story where they agree especially about how important faith and family is to them. I lost count of how many times someone told either Tara or Luke to postpone the wedding. Get to know each other better they said. I kept questioning what the rush was.

I wanted to sit Tara down and tell her until she heals from her parents death, she won't be able to fully give her life to Luke. There is a secret that Luke is hiding which could cause Tara to rethink the marriage. Why does he wait so long to divulge it? One of the best parts of the story is when they are being counseled by the pastor. He asks questions that should have sent up red flags, but they both are so determined to marry, they almost seem to say what they think the pastor needs to hear.

Each of them have assets but Tara is the one that has some valuable cars that Luke is determined to sell. Okay I have to say it. Luke is pushy, emotional abusive at times and Tara hardly speaks up for herself. How is this a marriage that God will bless? I din't like the whole concept of desperation to get married and ignoring red flags that should have stopped the wedding. The ending disappointed me for personal reasons. I wanted something else to happen but in the end I guess love prevailed.

I enjoyed the story and especially loved reading about painting. My husband airbrushes, so I am always amazed at how someone can turn a canvas into art. Caroline is a sweet young woman who is very gifted. Reading about her different paintings was easy to visualize. The time period was a breath of fresh air for me. I don't remember many books set during this time and it was fun to be reminded of what it was like. I loved the references to bands like Kansas. I remember listening to them and ot brought back some good memories for me.

The author does an excellent job of describing places and making readers feel like they are there. Caroline is offered a chance of a lifetime to go with her uncle to England to film an art series. I would be jumping up and down if given that chance to visit England. I loved the romance in the book and how easy it was for Caroline to share her faith with others. There is a particular person she leads to Jesus that was so well written, I cried. It reminded me to not pass up a chance to share Jesus with others.

I loved how the author explored trust with the characters. Caroline is definitely struggling with this issue when someone from her past shows up. I liked Chad and felt he was a gentleman trying to find forgiveness. Will Caroline give him a second chance?  It was so nice to read how important it was to stay pure until marriage. I think that is what makes me like Chad so much. He has strong morals and is trying to win Caroline back.

The story is a look at what happens when secrets are exposed and learning how to forgive. We all have trust issues and can be stubborn when it comes to forgiving. I loved how Chad and Caroline slowly started to open up to each other and share their feelings. The story is a great example of putting God first in your life and allowing Him to be part of your marriage.

Something Borrowed, Someone Blue: A borrowed dress, half-completed marriage counseling, and a last-minute theft.
Let’s face it. Weddings equal stress for the families involved. Preachers, however, have it easy. Or so they say.
Ty Jamison’s first parishioner is getting married. Though he’s performed many services at the little chapel in New Cheltenham–grand affairs, all designed to give the illusion of simplicity–all of them were strangers to him.
So when Lara Priest asks him to perform the ceremony at her wedding, and to use the chapel, of course, Ty is thrilled. That joy fades as one by one, things go wrong. From a groom who refuses to attend pre-marital counseling to Lara discovering that her dream wedding dress is a no-can-do, what can go wrong seems to.
And like so many weddings that movies are made of, things go from bad to worse to “worser.”

More from Chautona

The tiny bridal shop held dozens of dresses. Frothy princess dresses, twenties dropped-waist dresses, straight, short, silky, shiny satin, lace, beaded appliques… I looked at them all and found an ivory jacquard, tea length, dress by Jessica McClintock. It was a hundred dollars. To a girl making $4.25 an hour and too broke to buy food, it might as well have been a thousand. Still, it was also cheaper than any other dress in the store and just my style.
I pulled out the twenty-dollars I’d saved by doing extra work around my apartment for the landlord and said I’d put it on layaway.
My maid of honor protested.
The dress wasn’t fancy enough. It didn’t reach the floor. It wasn’t white. I didn’t look good in ivory (she was right on that one, anyway), and the veil I’d fallen in love with—you know the $120 veil I could never afford—wouldn’t look good with it.
Duh.
Look, I was eighteen (barely), and had parents who would have paid me to elope in Las Vegas in lieu of the wedding. Two months later, we did go… And we still had the wedding, but that’s a story for another day.
I left the store with my choice on layaway. Went home and later told my fiancé about the thing. He said to get the one I wanted. And I had. Still, I got the impression that he thought I actually wanted the other one… and maybe he meant that I should get that one.
That left a conundrum. Did he like the sound of the other one more? Was that why? The traditional white and floor-length thing? I went back to the shop the next day to look again. Seriously, if we’d had cellphones back then, I would have taken a picture and asked him.
That’s when I found out the white one was now on layaway—not the ivory I’d chosen. The decision had been made for me.

AND SO WENT THE REST OF MY WEDDING PLANNING.

I made one decision. It was countermanded as not grand enough, not traditional enough, too cheap, not enough… One decision, I’d made involved flowers. I called to ask about something after I’d ordered them and found they’d been changed to something else. I lost it—informed the florist that if any changes were not made in person with my driver’s license as proof of me making them, then when the wedding day came, if the flowers were wrong, I’d do without flowers. We wouldn’t have any. And I wouldn’t pay for them.
I wish I’d have had the backbone to do more of that.
But come on, I was eighteen. My mother didn’t have anything to do with wedding planning. They’d agreed to show up in whatever clothes we told them to, and that was it.
Back to the dress. I think it’s important to note that I did love that white, floor-length dress. It was beautiful, it looked good on me, and it would make for lovely pictures. It would.

IT JUST WASN’T WHAT I’D CHOSEN.

You see, I’d said “yes” to a dress—just not the one that I had agreed to pay for. Instead, it was the one that was almost four times the cost of the one I already couldn’t afford.
I’d always planned to tell the story—fictionalized, of course—but I figured it would be about Rockland’s wedding planning company, “The Agency.” So, when it came time to do my book for the next Crossroads collection, The Second Yes, I was surprised to discover that elements of my own wedding kept cropping up in different ways.
The motivation is different in Something Borrowed, Someone Blue, but the result is the same—a girl who, no matter what happens, can’t seem to have the wedding she envisions.
The question is… is that a good thing?

Different authors, different styles and unique stories make up this collection filled with hope and promise. Each author brings their style to the pages and delight readers with wonderful characters and a few laughs along the way.

I have read several books from Chautona Havig and each book has blessed me in some way. She has the ability to touch on subjects that may be painful, but gently guides readers through scripture and words to achieve a story that fills you with joy, compassion and a better understanding that God is always there.

In Something Borrowed, Someone Blue,  I immediately feel in love with the characters. Lara is a hard working woman who has just gotten engaged to Preston. Oh my I could tell this was not going to be a happy wedding. They come from different backgrounds and Preston's parents are quite snobby. Lara needs to be on top of her game if this wedding is going to happen.

One of the descriptions in the story about a wedding took my breath away. The brilliance of using a floral arch to become "the flower girl" was a work of genius. The author does such an outstanding job of detailing dresses, flowers and even furniture that I was able to visualize it perfectly. I was captivated by Lara and how hard she tried be sure she was doing the right thing in marrying Preston.

There is a lot to be said about Ty the pastor. He is charismatic and sincere at the same time. I began to wonder if he had eyes for a certain woman and was fighting off his feelings. I don't know why but I laughed when Preston doesn't show up for the first premarital counseling session with Lara. Really? "Take notes for us honey and we will get together and discuss them." I loved the questions Ty asked Lara in the session and it really made me think about my marriage. Why did I marry my husband? What attracted me to him? Have you been in love before? They are such simple questions but ones that are vital to a lasting relationship.  I began to realize that the story is more than just about an upcoming marriage. It is about being with the right person and sharing the same goals. Being equally yoked is important and should never be dismissed.  Another important part of a marriage is trust and communication.  There doesn't seem to be much of that going on with this couple.  I loved the story and the author writes with such clarity as she shares truth and wisdom through prayer and scripture. As always, I walk away from her stories with renewed hope and a deeper understanding of a loving God.

LONGING FOR A HERO by DEBRA CLOPTON

This is a nice clean romance story with two people trying to get over past relationships. Lulu is a spunky woman who walks dogs. I think really most of the dogs walk her though. She has moved to this charming town to get away from bad memories and to start a new life.

Brad is the fire chief and his good looks make women swoon around him. Well not everyone because for some reason Lulu tries to avoid him. When her apartment is destroyed in the fire, she can’t help but run into Brad. He is sympathetic and worries if she will find a place to stay.

I really loved how the community came together to help Lulu. Can you image sifting through your burned out apartment and suddenly see a group of women with cleaning supplies ? They are there to help their friend Lulu. She is overwhelmed by the outpouring support of the town.

As we get to know Lulu and Brad better, we find out they are both hurting from something. They each have trouble trusting and it may be hard for them to let their guard down. Brad is such a caring person and I loved how gentle he was around Lulu. He didn’t rush anything and allowed them to get to know each other slowly. You can feel the uneasiness as Brad and Lulu start to realize they may have feelings for each other.

The story is a beautiful picture of finding  yourself and letting go of the past. Be sure and grab a copy and follow Brad and Lulu as they search for peace and a new beginning,

A GHOSTLY SUSPECT by TONYA KAPPES

Emma Lee is at it again with her wit and charm. I just love this character so much . She would be so fun to hang out with. Well there is that little thing that she sees dead people that may give me chills.  The story is fun to read and I love the small town gossip sessions that go on.

Poor Emma Lee is in big trouble when she and a friend have a disagreement at the funeral home. It is no surprise that the friend is found dead soon after the very public shouting match between Emma Lee and now dead friend.  Can you guess who the number one suspect is? For some reason the new sheriff , Trevor has it in for Emma Lee.

I was excited to see the return of the handsome Jack Henry to try to keep Emma Lee out of trouble. It is a hopeless job for him, but it sure is fun to read how hard he tries.  Emma Lee wants to help her friend cross over and will stop at nothing to accomplish it. It doesn’t hurt if she can clear her name as she and her friend gather up evidence to prove who the real killer is.

You are in for a few twists and surprises in the story that had me gasping and saying, “You are kidding me.” No I didn’t see the twists coming and that is why the author is so gifted and able to keep her readers guessing till the end of the book. Grab a glass of sweet tea, get comfy and enjoy the latest story with Emma Lee as she takes on another case of a ghostly adventure.

A FAMILY FOR GRACIE by AMY LILLARD

I really enjoyed the concept of this story. Most marriages are based on love, but sometimes a marriage is a matter of helping a person out who seems overwhelmed, and needs help with children. Matthew is way over his head with five young children , one which is a baby to raise on his own. I laughed sometimes at the things the children did that made Matthew want to raise his hands up in surrender.

Gracie is a wonderful character who has always wanted  a family and to be married. Looks like the perfect arrangement is going to happen to benefit both Matthew and Gracie. A marriage between them seems like a great solution, but is it? They are both in for surprises in this story that brings two people together in a emotional journey to forgiveness, hope and love.

There are many people who are there to  give advice to the couple and they all have good intentions but after awhile I think they both just wanted to get married and try to get back to a normal life. The children definitely need a mother to nurture them and Gracie has a heart filled with love for them. The question is, do either her or Matthew feel anything for each other?

The story is sprinkled with wonderful scriptures and wisdom that feels the heart with hope. Matthew and Gracie each will need to discover what God’s plan is for their lives as they blend marriage and family into a place of love and forgiveness. I loved how the author wrote the story with glimpses inside the hearts of two people each wanting to find love. Gracie is a very compassionate woman who finds herself praying for a marriage that is filled with love, while Matthew must come to terms with a tragedy that he blames himself for.

I was captivated by the children in this story and how much they needed guidance and a feeling of knowing they were wanted. They keep Gracie on her toes and at times are stubborn. Baby Grace is a special child that brings two people a renewed hope and reminds us all that God is in every marriage . We must remember not to worry over little things but be thankful for each day that brings us joy and love. I loved this story because it reminds us that family is important and when you don’t give up when things are hard, God is there to open your eyes to unconditional love.

What a wonderful story that captures the hearts of two people dealing with their past and trying to make a fresh start. The author does a great job of giving us characters that are easy to relate to and scriptures that fill your soul with hope. It is easy to fall in love with Ashley and Ben as they find common ground with love of horses and wanting to help hurting people. I loved the story and the message of hope and forgiveness. The story is also a time slip which gives us a glimpse into a war that took many lives. Come join the author as two generations collide on a journey to freedom and unconditional love.

NO OCEAN TOO WIDE by CARRIE TURANSKY

Be warned that boxes of tissues will be needed to read this book. I don’t know where to start with how deeply emotional this story is.  The author has exceeded my expectations of how gifted a writer she is. The story is one that opened my eyes to the fate of children during a time period that was hard on many people.

I had no idea that children of British descent were shipped away to Canada sometimes without real reason to rip them from their families. I am overwhelmed at the cruelty these children were put through. I’m sure most children believed they were being adopted into loving and caring homes, but that was not always the case.

This story follows Laura as she works away from home to help her family out and how her siblings  get caught up in a system that is far more dangerous than most people were aware of. Laura is beside herself when she learns her siblings have been taken away and will do anything to find them. I could feel Laura’s desperation as she travels to Canada to find her siblings. Can she find them before tragedy strikes? I admired her strength to rescue her siblings and how deeply she cared for their safety.

It was hard to read at times the homes the children were placed in. Most of them were treated as servants and had little hope of finding a way to escape their situation.  The children in this story offers hope to those that think Jesus has forgotten them. The author gives us a sense of urgency in seeing that justice prevails and the children are returned to their family. I loved Katie, Grace and Garth and how they clung to their faith that God would rescue them.

Andrew is a wonderful character who helps in trying to reunite Laura with her sisters and brother. I loved that he never gave up and wanted to help not only Laura and her siblings but other children who had been abused by a system that only wanted financial gain. As Andrew and Laura band together there seems to be a little romance brewing between them. I liked that the author gives hints of their attraction but doesn’t make it the main theme of the book.

Children are a blessing from God and this story reminds us of how precious that blessing is. I sat on the edge of my seat as I drew to the end of the story. I was captivated by the emotions and the never ending faith throughout the book. I will be adding this book to my top picks for 2019. The author has promised a follow up book to continue this story and I will be anxious to read it. Thank you for writing a story that heals wounds, reunited families and gives us a look at Gods promise “that He will never leave us nor forsake us.”

About the Author

Roseanna 2018Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary. You can learn more about her and her stories at www.RoseannaMWhite.com.

More from Roseanna

When I told my best friend and critique partner what book I was pitching next to my publisher, her response was something along the lines of, “That sounds awesome. Also, you’re crazy, and I do not envy you writing that one.”
I laughed…and knew exactly what she meant. Because I was setting out to write a heroine who was a mathematician—which I am definitely not. A heroine who was utterly indifferent to love and marriage—which makes for a difficult story when one writes romance. A character who had an unshakeable faith—which has to be shaken at least a bit in order to make for growth throughout the story. And more, a character who has “issues,” let’s call it, that those familiar with such things will recognize…and which those who aren’t will probably think are quirks.
I was setting out to write a story that would be challenging for me, every step of the way. And the result is a book I’m incredibly in love with and so happy to share with the world.
The Number of Love is all about Margot, who thinks and even prays in numbers. Born and raised in Belgium, she and her family fled to England in 1914 when the Germans invaded her homeland. Thanks to her remarkable abilities with numbers and patterns, she’s now employed at Room 40, the Admiralty’s secret codebreaking branch. But as I was contemplating what sort of man could ever win Margot’s heart, I knew he had to be very different… someone active where she’s still. Someone outgoing where she turns inward. Someone who sees in her what she never can, and who believes she can grasp the dreams that society tells her are unbefitting a woman. This is how Drake was born—a field agent employed by Room 40.
I can honestly say this is the only book I’ve ever written that required me to borrow my daughter’s algebra book while I was writing it, LOL. And though every single scene was a challenge, it was one I thoroughly enjoyed. I hope you’ll join me on the journey that Margot and Drake are on, which answer the question my husband cheekily asked more than once as I was writing it: what isthe number of love?

Review.jpg

Everything about this book was intriguing right from the beginning. I really enjoyed getting to know Margot. She is quite a unique person with numbers floating around in her head all the time. I thought she was brilliant, trustworthy and dedicated to her job. What an exciting life she led decoding secret messages that were vital to the safety of our nation. It amazed me how quickly she was able to decode an encrypted message with numbers that came to her. If only my mind was as brilliant with numbers as Margot. But alas, she is one of a kind and I marveled at her flaws as well as her intellect.

Drake was a wonderful addition to the story with his courage and determination to outsmart the enemy. His attraction to Margot seemed like love at first sight,  but how could you not fall in love with her? She is without a doubt a breath of fresh air that explodes with confidence. It is a slow build to a relationship that digs deep into the heart and sees the beauty of God's love surrounding them.

The exceptional historical facts make the story easy to feel as if you are there. Actually I wanted to follow Margot for just one day. I wanted to know how her mind worked and how she kept her sanity with numbers flying across her mind all the time. The element of espionage escalates the story to an intriguing guessing game. The action is at a great level and figuring out what would happen next was exciting for me.

It is always nice to read how characters grow in their faith and this book is full of inspirational journeys to find God for several characters. There is one particular part in the book that especially spoke to me. Margot goes through something very painful and I liked how she made Margot very vulnerable at this time. I felt like I was able to see beyond the numbers that take over Margot and allowed me to witness a real emotion that only Jesus can heal.

The story is a wonderful journey of growing for Margot and allowing Drake to become an important part of her life. Together they make a great combination of steadfast faith and determination to save their country. This is one of my favorite books from the author and I have to mention how much I appreciate the hard work put into this story to make it as authentic to the time period as possible.
