A long time ago when I wrote Daughter of Light (the first book in my Follower of the Word series), I mentioned the Nordic Wars and how it changed people’s perspective on beings with power. It was a side comment to answer my main character’s question, but I was intrigued with the idea and knew someday I wanted to write about it.

Now almost twenty years later, here is that story.

Some questions I’m asked when people realize Winter’s Maiden ties in with Daughter of Light is do they need to read my first series? The answer is no. Winter’s Maiden takes place 400 years before the events in Daughter of Light. It involves a country and culture I never explored in my previous series, not to mention the world looked different back then. However, fans of my first fantasy series will appreciate seeing familiar places, races, and what happened back then to create the world in Daughter of Light.

So, what do new readers have to look forward to? Here are a few: a Viking-Inspired culture with my own twist, a female character who is strong but doesn’t need to prove that, a healer who is built like a berserker but is actually a pacifist, a power that allows a person to see inside the soul of another, battles that don’t read like a historical textbook, and deep questions I’m known to explore in my novels.

In the end, I love that I was able to revisit a world I created over twenty years ago and write a story that’s been on my heart for almost as long. I consider it one of my best books yet and cannot wait for readers to finally get to read Brighid’s story.

MY REVIEW

The beginning of the story sets the stage for a riveting adventure. Brighad’s birth is filled with tragedy as her mother slips away while her father walks away from her. Her future may seem uncertain but the woman who raised her has instilled within her strength. I loved how Brighad is fearless as she starts her journey to see what her gift is.

As they set out to another place to look for work, it struck me how vivid the details are of the land and the people they encounter. There is definitely a division among the people as Brighad starts to realize that not everyone accepts her because of her heritage. It does remind me of how people are treated today with discrimination. I loved when Elphsaba says, “Searching for one’s purpose will never change. Or else there is no reason for life.” Wise words that Brighad will forever remember from the woman who has raised her with unconditional love.

When Brighad is left alone she wanders the streets looking for somewhere to belong. It is intriguing that her ability to fight has caught the attention of someone. She has been given a place to eat and stay warm if she fights for this group. Will she join them or stay on her own?

I enjoyed the book but wished that a certain character had entered the story much sooner. His addition heightens the adventure and brings a relationship that I was excited to see. If you love adventure, danger, a bit of inspiration and a determination to survive this book is for you.

Joann: Apron Strings Book 5 is part of the Apron Strings series, a multi-author project. When Jenny Knipfer, the organizer behind the project, approached me about joining the lineup of authors, I was immediately intrigued. An old cookbook passed down each decade to a new character? Small towns? Romance? Sign me up!

The books in this inspirational series are connected by one single cookbook, Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book, as it passes from character to character. The cookbook contains more than recipes. Through time, women have penned encouraging words, quotes, and scriptures in the margins. There are eleven books in the Apron Strings series—one for every decade from 1920 to 2020. My novel, Joann, takes place in the 1960s.

One of Joann’s specialties is a popular 60s favorite, Jello with Dream Whip. No recipe needed there. Another name for this should be Disappearing Blueberry Pound Cake, because that’s what happens when I make it! This cake has become a family favorite. As far as how Joann’s cooking attempts using Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book come out, you’ll have to read the novel to see. In the back of my novel there’s another recipe, one that would’ve appeared in Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book. All of the Apron Strings books have a recipe or two (or more) in the back.

Parts of Joann’s story are fun and lighthearted, but she also faces serious issues during uncertain times. I hope readers enjoy reading Joann, but also hope they come away from her story with a deeper understanding of the comfort that comes from trusting God with the future.

MY REVIEW

Flashback to 1965 where we find out main character Joann working at her family’s general store. She would love to make some upgrades to the store, but her father is stuck in his ways. She dreams of one day running the store by herself but will that ever happen? I enjoyed the way the author paints a picture of this time period with expressive words. Things were just starting to take a change in the world as the Vietnam War was looming.

Following customers around the store was fun as they asked for Sunbeam bread and fresh strawberries that had just been delivered. Poor Joann can’t catch a break with her father. This does make for some challenging moments between them. Some people just don’t like change and her father thinks the store needs to stay the same for the sake of the customers. I guess he hadn’t heard of changing with the times.

The relationship between Nathan and Joann can be described as almost ready to commit but not quite. It’s like a slow dance they played with each other. Nathan is thoughtful, kind and sure does work hard. I loved how he was always willing to help Joann out and was there for her when she needs a friend. I began to wonder if this relationship would ever blossom.

With a bit of turmoil going on in Joann’s family, she turns to Nathan for comfort. It seemed natural that they could share their problems with each other. I did like how they both were grounded in the Word and read scriptures to help them with difficult situations they faced. Joann doesn’t have a mother to go to which you can tell has affected her.

Be sure and pick up a copy and find out what plan God has for Joann. She faces hard decisions as the story illustrates waiting on God. We may have our own plans , but God directs our path.

About the Author

Back when I first started writing fiction, I used to worry that each story idea would be my last, that I’d never get another good one. Since then, I’ve learned that stories somehow beget more stories.

For instance, back in 2022, I created a character named Grant, who was secretly in love with his coworker, Summer. In the process of figuring out who Grant was, I realized he had five brothers. All I knew about them was that they grew up in Maine and one had a limp and blamed Grant for it.

I had no idea why.

Grant’s story came out in Courage in the Shadows, the ninth book in the Coventry Saga. Then I told his brother Daniel’s story in A Mountain Too Steep, book eleven in the same series, a bridge to the Wright Heroes of Maine.

In the middle of writing Running to You, the first book in that series, which is about Sam, I “met” his older brother, Michael, a CIA agent, and thought, wouldn’t it be fun if his girlfriend was kidnapped? Oh, and what if she was Middle Eastern? And what if she was taken by terrorists?

Well, crazily enough, that’s what happened. (It’s fun to be the little-g-god of my little story world, always submitting to the Big-G-God in the real world, of course.)

In Rescuing You, Michael heads to Iraq to rescue Leila and meets her twin sister, Jasmine, who’s also being held against her will. And their family has ties to terrorists, which gave me a great idea for the next book, Finding You, which takes place in Germany with Bryan, the brother with the limp.

After he and his beautiful heroine, Sophie, survive their plot, we head back to the US, which brings us to Sheltering You, my most recent release.

And now it’s getting really fun because Jasmine is hiding from her terrorist (and bigamist) husband, who’s searching for her and his unborn child.

See what I mean? Each story births the next.

You’re going to love Sheltering You. Derrick, the youngest of the Wright brothers, is already smitten with Jasmine, but he has no idea she’s married and expecting a child. And she might loathe her husband—so much that she ran from him and is hiding a half a world away. Even so, she’s married, and that means something. So no matter what she feels for Derrick, she can’t act on it.

The situation is complicated, and it just gets more complicated as the story progresses. Which is what makes it So. Much. Fun!

And guess what. This series isn’t over, not even close. We’ve gone through all the brothers, but there are more Wrights out there…cousins. I don’t know all their stories yet, but Alyssa’s is already coming together. It’ll release in the winter of 2025 with some familiar faces—good guys, of course, and maybe bad guys as well.

MY REVIEW

This has been an intriguing story with characters who jump off the pages. I liked how the author does an excellent job of using stories from the Bible to help us understand what the characters believe. Getting to know Jasmine was informative to her culture. She has always believed that she is less than. Women in her culture are not respected so she has a difficult time understanding that in America women are treated equally. She is in danger from someone who will do anything to find her.

Derrick has had feelings for Jasmine for a long time. He has been friend zoned but continues to have deep feelings for her. When she asks him to help her, he has no idea that it would turn into a race for their lives. I loved how his faith never wavered even in the midst of danger. He asks his brother for help when he gets in over his head. Finding out who they are dealing with brings in many government agencies.

The story is action packed along with secrets that could destroy relationships. With an explosive story that goes deep into Iraq and its beliefs, our main characters will have to trust God to protect them. Will Jasmine’s secret cause Derrick to change his feeling for her? Can Derrick’s brother and his connections help them escape from those who want to harm them? Get ready for an intense look at greed, power and a lesson in trusting God.

If you were to do a Google search for books related to the topic of organizing, you’d see a wide range of options—from books on decluttering your home to the best way to manage your time. But nowhere on the list would you see the Bible listed as a resource.

Why? Because most people don’t consider the Bible to have much to say on the topic. But they’d be wrong. The Bible is full of organizational principles waiting to be mined!

That’s why we wrote the devotional, Uncluttered: Shaping Your Heart & Home for What Matters Most. We wanted to show people—in a non-judgmental format—that God has a lot to say on the subject.

Day 12

A Time to Let Go

“… a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away …”

It was time.

The soles of my favorite silver sandals were worn paper-thin. Ten years of constant use had taken its toll. Every time I slipped those shoes on for an outing, I knew I would slide them off in pain.

It was time I let go.

But I couldn’t. I was certain I would never find another pair of sandals with such unique style and flair. They were my go-to shoes, my favorites, the ones I couldn’t travel without. How could I possibly get rid of them? Yet, my season for these beautiful sandals had surpassed the time they were intended. They did the job they were supposed to do—and then some. It was only fitting that I say goodbye to them so I could make space for a new pair.

It was time I let go for good.

While you may not have trouble parting with a certain pair of shoes, you likely have other items in your home that you are endeared to—your old, comfy jeans; the worn-out stuffed animal that’s missing an eye; the trophies you won in high school that remind you of your glory days.

There was a proper season for those things, but now it may be time to let them go once and for all. It’s never easy, but it’s usually necessary. When we do, we are no longer bound by things that tie us down, bring us stress, or cause us pain. Instead, we can live with peace and freedom.

But we’ll never see those results if we continue to cling to the things that no longer serve us. It’s only when we let go that we can receive what’s waiting for us in the next season of life.

Prayer

Father, give me the strength I need to remove the unnecessary so the essential has first place in my life. Help me make room for that which serves me well and brings glory to You. Loosen my grip on what I need to let go of so my hands will be free to receive all You have for me.

Now, Unclutter It!

When is it time to let go?

How do you know when it’s time to let go of a pair of shoes, a piece of clothing, an unused kitchen appliance, or anything else in your house? Is it a feeling you get, or are there visual indications that an item you own is no longer serving you?

While there’s no definitive guide to dictate when or what to remove from your home, here are a few signs it might be time to part ways with your physical stuff:

Dust collecting on the item
Tears/rips, broken or missing parts, rendering it useless
It’s been crammed in the back of your drawer or closet, and you haven’t missed it
It no longer works properly and makes it hard to use
You have no idea what it is or how to use it You’ve had it for a while, and it’s still in its original packaging, untouched, or has the price tag attached
Its “best by” date has passed

As you work through different rooms or spaces in your house, keep this list handy to help you determine whether or not to hold onto an item. In most cases, you’ll find you can probably discard or donate the item without any regrets. Whatever it was had its season in your life. Now, it’s time to let it go.

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed this book which helps readers understand that God likes order. He doesn’t like chaos or confusion. Each chapter is easy to read with scriptures to look up, a prayer and a reflection page to jot down our thoughts. There are good examples in the book of how we are reminded to treat our belonging with care. I may not have a fancy house, but I am blessed with what I have. I do my best to take care of it and appreciate how this home is a reflection of God’s blessings.

It is time to declutter my life and this book has motivated me to donate things I no longer need. Holding on to my brothers clothing is now not important. Those clothes need to be donated for others to benefit from. We keep things around that are not necessary and before we know it, we live in a cluttered environment. Those warning signs mentioned in the book helped me realize that letting go of things that clutter our lives, sets us free from chaos. Now we can start to focus on God and what His plan is for our lives.

“If we put God first, He will take care of us.”
