Hole in the brick wall shaped as a heart

Seasoned renovators Greg and Denise Broadwater dream of owning and restoring a historic home in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. What follows are six years of unimaginable challenges and successes concerning the renovation of their condemned 1920s Charleston Cottage, their place in a transitional neighborhood on Congress Street, and their thirty-year marriage.
In a community that struggles to feel like home, alongside normal stressors of full-time work and family weddings, the heightened tension taxes the Broadwaters to the brink. Nothing is left untouched in their hundred-year-old cottage full of architectural and historical details, from the rotted floorboards to the hole in the roof and the knob-and-tube wiring that causes a fire. But through Denise’s fascinating memoir, A House with Holes, the Christian author and therapist shares how she and her craftsman-architect husband strengthened the holes in both their home and their relationship during this wearying time in order to survive and thrive.
Using Broadwater’s counseling experience, marriage principles have been woven seamlessly into the textdemonstrating ways to maintain relationships in the midst of struggles. Reflective questions close each chapter so that readers may ponder their own relationships with growth and understanding.

More About A House With Holes

Marriage comes with the struggle of making life work—but with a promise of home, a place to rest, to be who we are in all our mess, to feel loved and accepted in the truth of who we are. Opening up our mess means adjusting to our anxieties, habits, and struggles.
We all know marriage can be tough. Marriage requires commitment and flexibility, allowing for each spouse to develop his and her own gifts, to work together through challenges, and to communicate in a way that draws the couple closer through any issues that arise. The same can practically be said for renovating a house—especially an old house.
In A House with Holes: One Marriage Journey in a Charleston Renovation, author and therapist Denise Broadwater shares the challenges and successes of the restoration she and her craftsman-architect husband embraced after their purchase of a 1920s Charleston Cottage that was slated for destruction. Oddly enough, the project began to mirror the ups and downs of their empty-nester marital relationship.
Through this intriguing memoir describing the architectural style and details of their historic home on Congress Street in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, Denise shares her struggles and disappointments during the six-year upheaval. They lived with open holes in the floors and roof, wild critters, and in an old neighborhood that was unsure of their intentions. As her attitude changed with her living situation, Denise discovered her marriage rising to meet the challenges they faced and this struggling community opening to become a place of belonging.
“All marriages have holes—that’s a given,” Denise says. “The holes are places you disconnect: a container for selfishness, for disappointment, and for addictions as people try to find alternatives for unmet needs. Intimacy opens up the holes. Growing means making small movements toward each other, coming together to reduce friction.”
Principles and questions about marriage have been worked seamlessly into each chapter so that readers can “shore up” their own relationships and grow in understanding while
vicariously watching the progress of the Charleston Cottage through the eyes of a seasoned DIY renovator.
The Broadwaters’ experience of doing life in the midst of a major house renovation demonstrates marriage recovery, and her expertise as a counselor shapes lessons for married people everywhere in an honest, easy-reading, and relatable telling.
I have read more than my share of books about relationships, but A House with Holes is refreshingly different. Reading this book feels like binging on a Netflix series because you have to see what happens next. Denise is a therapist who has an in-depth understanding of relationships, and she has invited you to have a front-row seat to view what it took to create an amazing marriage while undertaking an almost impossible renovation.

Review.jpg

I enjoyed reading about the renovation and all the hard work that was put into it. I know if my husband and I took on a project like that it would definitely test our marriage. I am very impatient and have no desire to build or redo a house. It was interesting to read how the author and her husband were able to work through obstacles with principles that can be applied to a marriage as well as their task of transforming a house.

I loved the questions at the end of every chapter that helps readers to apply it their marriage. There are several keys things needed to have a good marriage; God, communication and trust. As we read the book we can see how the couple needed to trust each other in order to accomplish their goal. I laughed about the raccoon because I would have blamed my husband as well for allowing the animal to invade our house.

The construction breaks at the end of each chapter are encouraging and helps guide couples to resolution during conflicts. The book is filled with a journey of renovating a house as well as nurturing a marriage. The author does a great job of using examples from their project to help them grow their marriage stronger. It has been an adventure reading how much work the couple did to see their dream come true. It reminds me to use that same principal in our marriage. We should work hard at keeping our marriage strong and put everything into it just as we would undertaking a project.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Book

Book: King Here
Author: Trish Porter Topmiller
Genre: Religion/Christian or Spiritual
Release Date: May 7, 2019
Trusting God and sharing Jesus with aging parents can be difficult. As Trish Porter Topmiller watched her father’s casket be lowered into the ground, she knew the complicated jigsaw puzzle of his life finally held the missing piece―Jesus. But for years, his life seemed as far away from grace, and a believing faith in God, as a person can be. A multimillionaire entrepreneur who believed his financial fortress (and business acumen) was invincible, he turned into a workaholic adrenaline junkie―and ultimate opioid statistic who had given up on life. Even then, grace found him.
King Here offers hope that no matter how old, how rich or how addicted someone is, it’s never too late to meet Jesus. Trish shares her father’s inspiring, yet tragic life story―filled with adventure and color and unique escapades―to reveal God’s plan for an old rich man who thought he had no need for God. Stepping back to see the big picture brings to light the hope and joy that God truly can answer prayers and do the impossible, but it doesn’t always look the way readers expect. In this moving tribute to her father, Trish encourages readers to never give up on loved ones who seem “too far gone” for God to reach.

More from Trish

I did not set out to write a book. I was preparing to talk at my Dad’s funeral and I looked at his life; the outrageous adventures, his business success, all the tragedies, and then the miracles. I realized his life was like an amazing puzzle and only God knew the puzzle box top. That’s when the outline came to me. He affected so many people and generations and once home, I was compelled to continue writing and it began to take shape and grow. I wanted information about publishing, so I contacted Terry Whalin who wrote Billy Graham’s biography. He said it was a story that I needed to share with people beyond my family.
King Here, is not only about finding faith and hope, but about the strength and courage it takes to handle what comes our way.  In a five-year period, from 2012-2017, I was confronted with the loss of my husband of twenty years (a two-time Olympian), and my beautiful fifteen year old son, Connor (a U.S. National Fencing medalist). They perished in an airplane accident where my husband was the pilot. A few years later my stepmother died at age 60 after a battle with addiction and then my father.
My prayer is you can be drawn into my Dad’s and my life and not want to put the book down. May your basket be filled with nuggets of wisdom and inspiration. May you enjoy the journey and the roller coaster of emotions. May you see how I trusted the Lord through tragedy which strengthens your faith. May you be encouraged to pray for those around you and be empowered to share Jesus with others.

One of the things I liked the most about the book was the author’s ability to share her father in a loving way. I loved that  her father was so involved in his children's and grandchildren's lives and made lasting memories for each of them. He was a driven but fair man who never flaunted his wealth. The touching tribute to her father is very transparent and at times emotional. Her relationship with her father was both joyful and hard at times.

Mr. King is very charming and I bet he had a personality that drew people to him. He is someone you want to be around because he had confidence and encouraged others. The Chuckism throughout the book was so fun to read and had much wisdom in those phrases. I loved the pictures the author shared in the book which gives readers a glimpse of a man who was smart, unique and loved his family.

The later chapters in the book are hard to read as the author shares how her father changed when his wealth started to diminish. I can't image losing ninety-seven percent of your wealth. This one point in his life was to become his greatest challenge.  Reading about his drug addiction made me tear up. A vital strong man reduced to sleeping all day devastated  his family. Along side him was his wife who had also become addicted. As I read the book I kept thinking it doesn't matter how rich you are and how immune you think you are from the enemy. The enemy found a way into this man's life and continued to weaken him with drugs and lies.

This story is sad at times but the miracle that happens overshadows everything.  This is a story that illustrates that it is never to late to give your life to Christ and to never give up hope. I loved this statement the author shares, " Who are we to judge whether someone who has professed Christ is saved or not? Only God knows."  Such a powerful statement that we all need to remember. I will always believe before my brother passed away last March that as he said the sinners prayer with me, that he was saved. I know he is in heaven and I'm thankful that I never gave up witnessing to him. I loved the ending of the book where the author shares how to lead someone to Christ. This would be an excellent book to use in a bible study or to share with someone who doesn't know Jesus. Thank you for writing a passionate book that gives hope to everyone who struggles with life

THE GRAY CHAMBER by GRACE HITCHCOCK

This story is one that will stay with you for many years. The details are very terrifying at times and it brought me to tears. I can’t begin to imagine the horror these women faced every day in a place that abused patients and caused deaths that were painful and inhumane.

Edyth is a wonderful character who does things other women disapprove of. I loved learning about fencing and how there were women who were gifted in this area. Greed is the  main  theme in this book as Edyth falls victim to her Uncles’ treacherous scheme to put her away and steal her fortune.

There is one character that I absolutely loved in the book. Bane is a brilliant fence instructor who happens to take a shining to Edyth. His love for Edyth is evident as he never gives up trying to find her. Yes to me he is a knight in shining armor.  It was intriguing to read how their relationship developed. Bane knows something is wrong when Edyth doesn’t show up to meet him one day. Edyth’s Uncle is callous and makes up lies as to where Edyth  is. While Bane searches for her , Edyth ,is locked away in an asylum under false pretenses. The description of The Gray Chamber is unnerving and I had a hard time reading about it. The author does an amazing job of vividly recounting what went on at the asylum and I was very interested in reading about an undercover journalist in the midst of patients.

The story is based on a true crime with fictional liberties that enhance the story. Once I started reading the book, I couldn’t put it down. I had to find out if Bane would save Edyth before it was too late. The thought of Edyth never being rescued had my heart pumping. After reading this book I will be exploring more about this asylum and the treatment that women were forced to endure. The faith element is good in the story and gives hope to Edyth. Even though this is just the beginning of the new year, this book will be placed on my list for favorite 2020 books .

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

About the Book

Book:  No Space Like Home
Author: Dell Tunnicliff
Genre: Fiction/YA/Science Fiction
Release Date: September 4, 2019
NoSpaceLikeHomeIf life were only as simple as following a yellow brick road. Gail’s quiet life among the Kansa Station turbines ends with a hug, a prayer, and a shove… into space.
She thinks she knows who she is, but she’s wrong.  Who is she really?  She’s about to find out.
Of course, landing on the wrong planet is complicated enough without crashing into things. Add to that spybots, waspbots, and cyberwolves and it’s no wonder Gail just wants to go home. Back to a life without this interplanetary circus and its flying monkeys.
Intrigue, secrets, and more than a little danger turn a “simple mission” into a hair-raising adventure as Gail—and three friends she meets along the way—accept a mission to save O-Zoras.
In the end, Gail wants nothing more to go home. She’s just not sure where that is anymore. “I’ve decided that home is more about who than where.” Well, that’s a good thing, Gail, because you’re not on Kansa anymore. It’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz meets Firefly in this fresh, a little zarbi, but totally licit YA space adventure. Grab your copy today and see what ALL that even means!

More from Dell

We are our heavenly father’s children, created to create.
When I set out to write this novel, I craved challenge—something that would stretch my own imagination. The wild, otherworldly, frontier of science-fiction winked at me like a distant star in the night-sky of possibility.  I admire teens and young-adults for their eagerness to seize the wonder of “What if.”  So, young-adult sci-fi it is!
Creating an entire fictional solar system was every bit of the creative rush I hoped.  Orchestrating a dance of stars and planets, designing a space ship, imaging cultures, people-groups, values, and linguistic quirks provided ample opportunities to stretch my creative muscles.
And then there was the naming!  Names are yet another way we reflect our divine author.  Our loving and personal God spoke each star into being and calls each by name.  In No Space Like Home, I named the four-sun solar system, “Hiraeth.”  It’s a Welsh word for that vague, yet poignant yearning for a place to which you can never return, have never been, or even that never was.  It’s a deep, inborn longing for someone, something or somewhere just out of reach of our plane of existence.  As Christians, we feel this keenly.  This world isn’t our eternal home.  We thirst for Jesus.  We hunger for heaven.  We long for a garden—unmarred by thorns and thistles of the fall. We ache to know ourselves and our loved ones as God designed– in perfect relationship with Him, unfettered by sin.
As part of this longing, we create and we name. We are all world-builders, designing with the materials around us, and bringing order to our sphere in small ways and large.  We are image-bearers of our holy Author and Creator.
Whether we paint (like my No Space Like Home heroine, Gail), design software (like George), weld parts (like Nic), or develop strategies (like Leo), we are all inventors and designers.  Create today.   Spin a bit of beauty, order, and identity from the nameless, swirling, chaos.

My all time movie is the The Wizard of Oz. As a little girl I was glued to the television each year it came out. Even today I will watch it if I know it will be televised. I was so excited to read this book and see what the author could do with a classic movie. The author has an imagination that clearly takes readers on a journey to other worlds with excitement. Gail is a fantastic character and I enjoyed following her on her journey.

The story is set in space which I thought was a brilliant idea. There is so much out there we don't know about and with the author's guidance we are able to explore other worlds and learn valuable lessons along the way. There are some references to the classic movie but the author puts her own spin on it to heighten readers intriguing minds.

The technology and strange words used in the story at first irritated me. But I realized that we are in space and the language will be foreign to us. Running a spacecraft does take considerable knowledge and I began to become engaged in the story as I felt more comfortable with the writing.

I loved that Gail carried her Bible with her but I would have liked to see a bit more spiritual aspect to the story.   I would like to see more interaction with characters and not so much techie lingo in the story. It would be nice to spend a little more time describing the place they travel to and give readers insight to the people there. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series and am excited to see where the author takes the story next. Overall good job of a twist on The Wizard of Oz.

More from Alana

I love writing Christian fiction suspense. I have multiple series for sale and one of the things my readers have grown to appreciate is how many of their favorite characters show up in more than one series. Another aspect of my books that readers’ enjoy is the mystery, intrigue, and twists and turns involved as they reach the final page.
My new novel, Forget Me Now, has all the favorite elements mentioned above, but includes a new psychological thriller element that I hope readers will love as much as I loved bringing it to them. This novel asks the question, “What would you do if you woke up to find three months of your memory entirely gone? Who would you turn to for answers during that confusing time … and how would you react if you began to question the ones you turned to for the truth?
Read all about how Mia handles a predicament just like this (except even more dangerous) in Forget Me Now, complete with all the thrills and gripping suspense you’ve grown to love from Alana Terry novels as well as the reminder that God is always in control.

Review.jpg

I am not a huge fan of amnesia stories because authors tend to drag the story line on unnecessarily. In this book I felt like the author did a good job of using amnesia in a way that enhances the story. Everyday Mia wakes up and thinks it is three months earlier. She knows that she is suppose to be at her parents cabin celebrating graduation with her boyfriend and friends. Why is she laying in her bed with a horrible headache and no memory of what has happened over several months?  Her dad is acting strange and her brother is home which makes no sense to Mia.

Mia is a good character with flaws that are revealed as the story progresses. She loves her boyfriend but I couldn't quite understand why she would not tell someone about the life her boyfriend endures at home. It disappointed me that she didn't take a stand and tell someone about how dangerous her boyfriends dad is to him. I also wanted to know more about Mia's mom.

My favorite character in the story is Chris. He is deep rooted in his faith and has a calling on his life. He wants Mia to share his future with him. Everything changes one fateful day. The twists in the story are quick and adrenaline rushing. At one point I started to suspect everyone close to Mia when she goes through a traumatic event. If you watch the news you know family members are the first to be suspected . In this story the author spreads doubt to lead readers off the trail of the suspect. I did have an idea who was behind everything but I never expected the turn of events and the reason behind the killings.

The best part and the sad part of the story is when Mia remembers what happened. Her heart is shattered but she is surrounded by the love of her church family and especially the pastor's wife. I don't want to give too much away but I have to say that even in death a person can make a difference.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
