Garrett

About the Book

Book: Garrett

Author: Izzy James

Genre: Christian Romance

Release date: November 27, 2020

IzzyJames_Garrett_eCover_HRGarrett Tyler thought he was leaving Ballard House for home, secure in the knowledge that love had finally won-out for his long-time friend Olivia. He steps out the door and into the past, 1769 to be exact. While finding his bearings Garrett stumbles upon a beautiful woman being attacked. He makes sure she gets home and because of his kindness, she allows him to stay in an outbuilding—even believing his time travel story—while he figures out how he will get back to his life in the future. The more time they spend together, the deeper friendship they build, but one thing is going to rip her world apart.

Mercy Hansford is a confidant, independent woman running her own tailor shoppe. Her world is shaken when she is brutally attacked after delivering one of her sought-after shirts. The consequences of this night could be more far-reaching than either of them can guess.

Should Mercy trust a man she barely knows?

More from Izzy

Why did I write Garrett?

While I was writing Max I was working through physical therapy prior to a lumbar fusion surgery. My physical therapist’s assistant was a young man named Garrett. He was intrigued that I was a writer and asked me if I would use his name in a book one day. So I had a name.

As I finished writing Max–who came forward in time from 1769–I started thinking about what it would be like for a young person of today to find himself back in 1769.

Garrett of the book bears no resemblance to Garrett of the physical therapy office! Garrett was fun to write. I hope you will enjoy reading it.

MY REVIEW

This is a fast read filled with  characters set against the time of 1769. I really enjoyed reading how Garrett time traveled back to a period where war was about to break out. The people had heard rumors about electricity but still thought it was strange. Garrett must be very careful that he doesn’t try to use his cell phone around anyone for fear he would be  accused of witchcraft.

Mercy is very independent and doesn’t much like to be told what to do. Being on her own, she works hard and tries  to keep  to herself. Garrett was at the right place at the right time when he rescues Mercy. I think we are to assume that she  was  attacked but the author gives hints of how severe the attack was. The story moves at a quick pace and their relationship does as well. The story is good but I feel like it was rushed and I didn’t really connect with the characters like I usually do in a book.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Book

Author: D.L. Wood

Genre: Christian Suspense/Romantic Suspense

Release date: October 21, 2021

UDcover6x9FINALEBOOK

A hundred-year-old secret might be the cause of and the key to solving a murder.

Jack and Chloe Bartholomew just wanted a romantic second honeymoon in the beautiful Hudson River Valley at the legendary hotel his family recently acquired. However, instead of spa treatments and horseback rides through the snow, things are all wrong at the Stonehall Estate Resort.

First, she learns of months of unexplained mishaps.

And now murder.

It soon becomes clear someone wants the resort to fail and will stop at nothing to make that happen. The question is…why?

In an effort to help the family business, Chloe picks up where the hotel’s last historical curator left off. But things quickly grow dangerous as her research uncovers truths hidden for decades—clues related not only to the mysteries sparked by a young girl’s death in 1931, but also those haunting the estate today. Soon Chloe is caught in a deadly race to expose the mansion’s secrets before more innocents become victims of the malevolent force behind it all.

Will Chloe bring the long-lost truth to light in time, or will she be the next to fall prey to the dark scheme, costing her everything, including her life?

More from D.L. Wood

I love stories. I’ve always loved them. Stories carry you away, make you think, take you on suspense-filled rides and introduce you to characters that you love so much you want to meet them in real life. I’m such a voracious reader that at the age of nine, my eye doctor told me if I didn’t start reading with more light, I’d need glasses way too early. Can you relate?

I guess that’s why I became a writer—to be part of the amazing adventure that is storytelling.

And let’s face it. Right now, most of us wouldn’t mind an amazing adventure.

In my Unintended Series of suspense novels, you’ll visit sizzling Caribbean beaches, Tennessee in golden autumn, and a snow-blanketed Hudson River Valley with a cup of hot cocoa in hand. You’ll go with characters that are believable—flawed, brave and hopeful—in the face of danger. Of course, there’s always romance in the mix and touches of faith, leaving you encouraged as well as entertained.

It’s what I’d want to read, so I wrote it for you.

I’m beyond thrilled that the third book in the series is releasing. Frankly, I wanted to see what happened to Chloe, Jack, and Riley as much as my readers did!

I hope you enjoy reading Unintended Detour as much as I enjoyed writing it—and that you have an amazing adventure along the way.

MY REVIEW

This book is a must for fans of mystery. I loved how the story caught my attention right away and  had me invested in each character. The elements of the mystery are very well written and I loved learning about the mystery of the historical resort. I felt like I became a sleuth as I tried to solve the mystery of something that happened in 1931. Can you imagine sifting through papers and artifacts for this time period? I wanted to be in the room helping so I could be the one to solve what others have tried years to do.

The author does an amazing with the cast of characters. Each one was well defined and vital to the story in some way. Chloe was such an inquisitive person and knows just the right questions to ask to further her search for the truth. Just as she started getting close to the truth, someone would get injured or disturb the papers she had collected. Going to the resort with her husband to celebrate their second anniversary doesn’t seem to be quite what they expected.

What really grabbed my attention is how Chloe wanted to make sure that the truth was told to perhaps bring good from something that was tragic. I loved her attention to following  every lead and never giving  up.  There are other characters in the book that are also helping her but I don’t want to give too much away. It was so hard not to read ahead to see if Chloe had solved the mystery. I had a list of suspects and reasons they may be guilty. The author does include faith in the  book and really focuses on how Chloe needs to wait on God and let His plans guide her.

The ending is extremely well written as pieces start to come together. I was shocked at who was behind everything and how Chloe was able to finally solve  the mystery that so many people had tried to do for years. It has been a pleasure to read this book as the author masterfully put a mystery together with subtle hints and  a paper  trail that  shares a young woman’s hope to help others.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit . The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

KathyPerryAfter My Parents Passed,

I re-evaluated what I was doing with my life and my contribution to others. A former classroom teacher and homeschool mom, I’ve always had a heart for educating kids.

In 2016 my daughter and I attended a local arts and crafts fair where I stumbled upon some cute children’s art and thought, “That’s what I can do! Write children’s books.”

I set my mission and started my own publishing company, Chickadee Words, LLC. I would do my best to affect our youth through wonderful stories full of timeless character struggles.

More from Kathy

Have you every known someone who thinks they’re the only ones that can do the job right? They’re the people who may be very good at what they do, but make poor managers because they don’t delegate or allow others to contribute.

This story is about a barn owl who has two owlets she must care for but her partner is lost for some unknown reason. She burdens herself with care and responsibility until her bandana buddies offer to help and show her she can be flexible.

Here’s one question in the “What If” part at the end of the book:

When you’re at school, are you sometimes afraid or embarrassed to ask a question when you don’t understand something and need help?

Special things about this book (and series) include:

  1. Proven easy-to-read font for early readers (Sassoon Primary)
  2. In full-color with original watercolor artwork.
  3. Leveled by Lexile and Fountas & Pinnell (F&P) for dialing in to your child’s reading level.
  4. Blue words are the character’s inside thoughts (rather than italics, which I thought would be harder to read). Kids enjoy the color. In fact, struggling readers love to read just the colored parts to start – and then want to continue reading! (Each book has its own color for this.)
  5. A glossary of newer words with definitions.
  6. A “What If” section for discussion with five questions about the story, and five questions of how the theme plays out in real life. (Parents and teachers love these books!)
  7. Hootin Goes Outside! is available in hardcover and softcover.

Help your kids learn to read with this fun story and cute watercolor illustrations. This early reader chapter book is perfect for ages 5-8 and can usually be read alone by 2nd or 3rd grades.

MY REVIEW

This series is a great collection for young children to enjoy. I like how the stories each feature an animal. The author does a good job of describing the animal featured and helps children learn more about them. The illustrations  are very eye catching and adds to the ambiance of the story.

This time we meet Hootin who is caring for her little owlets. The little ones begin to screech looking for their Papa. Where is he and why has he not returned with food?Hootin knows she needs to go out and look for food but is worried about leaving the little ones alone.

I like how characters from the series are in each book and feel like I know them. They represent friendship and are always there to help each other out. Hootin learns  a great lesson about letting her friends help her. I think some of us are like Hootin. We want to do things on our own, but sometimes we need to let go of pride and allow others to help us out. This is a good book to help children understand about helping others and learning about trust.

More from Cheri

The Redemption of Green Pines is a series about community. We first meet Wynn and her friends in Journey Back Home when they attended youth group. While Pastor Jace and Holly remain a constant presence throughout all six books, Road to Freedom takes us deeper into the lives of four friends – Wynn, Addie, Zane and Owen, who graduated from youth group and began working for Holly’s catering business. They also babysit the Cooper kids from time to time and have become part of the family.

Since the beginning when we were introduced to Wynn, she carried around a secret she wouldn’t share with anyone, not even her best friend. Road to Freedom is Wynn’s journey of truly discovering who she is as a Daughter of the King, and learning how good it feels to live in freedom instead of burdened by other’s choices.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Wynn and her friends as much as I have!

MY REVIEW

This book may be hard  for some to read due to the topics in the book. There is talk about emotional abuse, suicide and other sensitive subjects which may not be suitable for everyone to read. The author does a good  job of writing this story with much grace. It  hit  home for me due to my upbringing. I am a preacher’s kid and my parents were very strict and abusive. When we went to church we sat on the front row with fake smiles while my dad preached . We pretended that we had a great family life, but that was so far from the truth. I now know how dysfunctional my family was and it sounds like Wynn’s is as well.

It was easy for me to relate to Wynn. She goes to a church where there doesn’t seem to be any joy and the rules were so bad, I wanted her to run out of the church. When she visits her friend’s church, she experiences freedom, the Holy Spirit, fellowship and God’s presence. You can tell she is confused and has many questions. I enjoyed Holly taking time to guide her through the many questions she had. Wynn has this idea that God is waiting to throw people under the bus. Oh how I understand the condemnation she lived under. You expect your parents to guide you and you trust them, but that doesn’t always happen.

Just thinking about Wynn’s father makes me angry. He is so mean and his words hurt every time  he lashes out at Wynn. For some  reason he favors his other children more. He never encourages Wynn and this broke my heart. The author writes such a compelling story that I had to stop several times. The disgusting way he talks about his other daughter is borderline well I won’t say. This man has secrets that would shock the church and others.

Zane is such a good friend to Wynn. His concern for her is genuine and I like how he goes to someone who gives him wise counsel  about the situation. The more time they are able to open up to each other, the more Wynn is able to understand how much God loves her. Zane shares his faith in a way that is not preachy but filled with grace.

The story is a realistic look at church and how we can be deceived if we are not following His Word. The author gives wisdom throughout the story and leads readers to the Truth. Watching Wynn slowly change was nice and I loved how she found a Godly woman to counsel her. One of the hardest things  we deal with is forgiveness. This story illustrates how important it is to forgive so you can be free. I am glad the author is writing another book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
