MY REVIEW

Oh my has this been a wonderful story of forgiveness, redemption, misunderstandings  and most of all loving unconditionally. I adored Sarah immediately because of her sweet spirit. She would do anything to help others and has a gift of compassion. Finding herself at her friend’s castle was fun and helped her overcome her insecurity. It was fascinating to discover with Sarah the history that  the castle had. Looking at it with her own eyes she could tell that the upkeep had been forgotten about.

It is hard not to want to say so much about the story but readers will be in for a treat  as they get engrossed with the story. James can be quite rude at times and his homecoming is not without a little tension. I was quite surprised by the terms James’s father gave  him  before  he went back to war. Sarah was not altogether happy with the arrangement but now she finds that  she has become a wife to someone in name only.

It was wonderful to see Sarah speak up when the maids were rude to her. Gossip was always close by and she knew how little people thought of her. The more she gave grace, the more she received unkind words. I loved how she continued to show respect to her father-in-law and I think he started to become more tolerable of her.

The story really takes a turn when James returns and finds a big surprise waiting. My heart went out to Sarah as she desperately wanted her husband to share her joy but he completely turned his back on her. I love how the author illustrates that trust in God is the key to help those who are struggling. We also experience a little mystery within the castle that took the story a little off track but I did enjoy the undertone of secrets and perhaps treasure that was rumored to be found.

This has been a very good story that found me tearing  up at times when Sarah seems to be so distraught and no one would comfort her. Through her tears and prays God was there to lift her up and give her strength to accept that she was treasured. In the  end I came to like James and  how his heart was stolen by a very special woman who showed him that love conquers all.

About the Series
While most stories set in Regency England focus on the rich, the young, and the beautiful, award-winning author Carolyn Miller decided she wanted to give readers something different for a change. Her new Regency Wallflowers series follows the commoners, away from the hustle and bustle of 1810s London, out in the Lake District of England. She tells the stories of women who are slightly older and have few prospects for marriage, women who might be considered “wallflowers.”

Midnight’s Budding Morrow is the second book in the Regency Wallflowers series. The first book in the series is Dusk’s Darkest Shores.

More from Ashley

Vivid is a great example of how something small can turn into something big with a little faith and a lot of work!

The idea for Vivid came from a dream (which later became part of Chapter 5) that I just couldn’t forget. A dream about a charming young man in a top hat and a young lady in a yellow dress. I won’t give away the whole scene, but what stood out to me was the complicated feelings of the young lady. She was left so conflicted and dazed by her encounter with this roguish stranger. She knew she shouldn’t have spent time with him, and yet it was exciting. The thing she wanted more than anything was for him to come back, and yet that was also the thing that terrified her the most.

This scene and these characters would not leave my head. I wanted to know the rest of their story and it was all I could think about. Finally, I wrote it all down. How could I not? I made some adjustments, and soon I was plotting. Soon I had names. Places. A magic system. A chapter. Two chapters. Ten chapters. Within a month, I had my first draft written.

The road forward wasn’t easy as I was met with rejection after rejection. But through it all I could feel my Heavenly Father cheering me on, encouraging me to grow the talent he had given me. At once point I almost shelved the project, but that little nudge kept me going and eventually led me to my publisher. All the little pieces that came together over the years to lead me there is a story in and of itself.

I hope you will enjoy Vivid and come to love Ava and Elm as much as I do. It is my privilege to have this opportunity to share them with you.

MY REVIEW

I will say that the cover is beautiful and definitely eye catching. The colors are so vivid and stands out to grab your attention. I did like Ava and her curiosity of what was happening around her. She knows that danger is close but for some reason it seems like this presence has a hold on her. I will say that I did not care for all the magic and spells in the book at all. It is not something I like to read about.

Elm is quite a character and befriends Ava which surprised me. Why was she not more leery of someone who everyone feared? I did like the point he made to Ava about Selene.  Why has Selene never encouraged Ava to have friends? Why has Selene kept Ava focused on one thing and not given her any kind of emotional support like a family would?

The story takes on a darker side as Ava becomes more involved with Elm. She starts to do things with him that  she feels is wrong, but she does have free will remember? I am beginning to wonder if Elm is good and everyone else has been casting doubt in people’s mind about him. The things he does seem to be for the better but  then I get curious and wonder why there has been so many lies and secrets surrounding the Mentalists. We have only heard one side of this story and right there is when the author hooked me. I had to know who Ava should be trusting. Is it Selene or Elm?

The author leaves us with a cliffhanger and I’m  beside myself knowing that I have to wait to find out what happens. I mentioned before that I don’t care for the magic and spells in the book and I wish there was less of it. I do see how the author used these two things to illustrate how easy it would be to manipulate people by controlling them and feeding them lies. I did end up liking the story more than I thought and will look forward to the next book in this series.

Sabal Palms

About the Book

Book: Sabal Palms and the Southern Squall

Author: Terry Overton

Genre: Christian Contemporary Women’s Fiction

Release date: April 5, 2022

8976DCE1-8605-4C90-9F39-4FD7DFDA3644_4_5005_cElaine Smith lived in the small coastal town of Sabal Palms long enough to know when to worry about a squall and when to simply close the windows and wait for it to pass. This one would be significant. It would be significant in terms of damage, but that was to be expected. What no one expected was the profound effect it would have on the lives of people from the Texas coast to New York City. Positive qualities of humanity are often displayed during times of natural disaster.
But a supernatural power had attached to this storm and subsequently worked within the hearts of the most needy, the most lonely, and the most sinister. The lives of four delightful women, a homeless teen, a rebellious son, a grieving lover who is at the bottom, a son who lost his faith, and a hired murderer, are all intertwined in the aftereffects of a Category 3 hurricane thanks to a few passages written by one determined woman.

More from Terry

This book will take the reader to the southern coast of Texas. In fact, this book happens at the very bottom tip of Texas. The reader will feel the warm sea breezes, view the coastal sunsets and sunrises, and experience the friendships of four close women friends. Here is a sample:

The women gathered at the swimming pool and shed their cover-ups. Next, each lady

took out her favorite sunscreen lotions and creams and sprayed and squirted so much on, they all

looked almost as pasty as a bottle of glue. No one talked at all during this process of slathering

on thick coats of varying SPFs. It was a polite, unspoken agreement that no forbidden words

were ever mentioned when the ladies were in swimwear. Words like cellulite, wrinkles, fat, fatty

tissue, weight, weight loss, weight gain, age spots, and—the worst words ever—skin cancer were

completely and totally off limits.

In times of crises, these four women always bind together and help each other. They have been friends for over twenty years. Here is an excerpt of one of their conversations during a pool party:

What strangers might not understand is the banter back and forth was exactly the only way they could get along. They enjoyed it. They thrived on it.

“Oh, fiddle-faddle, Bonnie, last week you told me you thought the salon was opening up

this week,” Mary jabbed. “It didn’t.”

“I didn’t say that. I said I heard it might be opening next month.”

“You said next week as sure as I am floating on this raft.”

“Had your hearing checked lately?”

“Right after you get yours checked.”

And they both laughed. It was always entertaining.

“Well, horsefeathers! I need to get this hair trimmed again. It is all cattywampus on the

sides.”

“What? You’ve got a cat in there?” Bonnie laughed.

“Feels like it,” Mary retorted.

MY REVIEW

The story is one where I enjoyed getting to know the four main women and how they each faced a hurricane together. I thought the author did a good job of describing the hurricane and the damage it leaves behind. I have been through several  and each one is different. The most devastating one for my town of Houston, Texas was Hurricane Harvey. In its path was destruction, lost lives, and a community that worked together. It was so inspiring to see people reaching out and lending a hand. This story has a similar feel to it and I loved how the author brings people together in a time of crisis.

There was one statement that really stood out to me that was said by a character. They uttered the words, “I’m tired in my faith.” I stopped reading and really thought about those words. I do feel tired at times in my faith. Like the character, I wonder if I am doing enough to help others. Am I spending time with God or speeding through those moments in my daily life? What I realized was I was tired because my faith has been tested a lot in the last few months. What I needed was encouragement, His Word and to know that He has never left me.

In this story we find characters that are looking for answers and before they realize it, a slip of paper finds them with words that they needed. How nice would it be if we left little notes for people to find? They could have scriptures on them or little snippets of words that talk about never giving  up. We all wonder sometimes if we have made a difference in someone’s life. We may never see the seeds that we planted but God will see the changed lives as we continue to share His word.

The book has a wonderful cast of characters that see changes in their life through faith. Who knew that a woman who desired to be a writer would someday find her words spread throughout the states. Those pieces of paper she thought were not good enough, was just what was needed at the right time for those who were looking for answers. I loved the book and how the author illustrated that God has a plan for each of us. As we look for answers when we are struggling, there may be  a message through someone we know or perhaps on a slip of paper that found it’s way to us as  God ordained  it to be.

The Story of Susannah Dickinson, Alamo Survivor

When asked how many died at the Alamo, many would answer that everyone did. While it’s true that all fighting on the side of Texas independence perished, there were survivors, all women and children and one slave. The only white woman (the rest were of Mexican descent) was Susannah Dickinson, along with her daughter Angelina. Susannah had followed her husband, Almaron, to Mexican Texas in 1831. They had married two years before when Susannah was just fifteen. She never learned to read or write.

She and the other women hid in the sacristy of the church, one of the surviving buildings in the mission and what we now think of as the Alamo. Her husband died, but Mexican General Santa Anna found them and spared their lives, sending them to Sam Houston with $2 each and a blanket.

She married again the following year but divorced him almost immediately on the grounds of cruelty. She married a third time the following year and was married for five years until her husband died of alcoholism. A fourth marriage occurred in 1847, but she divorced again in 1857, this time allegedly because she was having an affair. That same year, she married for a fifth time. This marriage lasted until her death in 1883.

The ring in A Promise Engraved is based on a cat’s eye ring supposedly given to Angelina by William Travis before the battle. Angelina was Susannah’s only child. She married and had three children, but that marriage ended in divorce. She gave the ring to a man she’d become involved with in New Orleans. She married again and had one more child but died in 1869 from a uterine hemorrhage.

Today there are many descendants of Susannah Dickinson. If you visit the Susannah Dickinson house in Austin, you’ll see a quilt that is signed by many of her living descendants.

MY REVIEW

This dual-time story captures a historic time that features the Alamo. I remember visiting the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas and found it to be smaller than I imagined. It is rich in artifacts and historic facts that make you feel like you traveled back in time. I looked forward to seeing how the author would illustrate this tine period. I was not disappointed in how much details the author provided and brought this time period back to life with outstanding characters.

Let’s talk about Josie and how much I admired her. She is young, fierce and very much a determined young woman. When she rides her horse, she is  in control and feels free from anything that may be weighing  her down emotionally. Josie has knowledge of both the Spanish and Indians which made her valuable. It also was an advantage for her to be able to blend into areas where her skills of being unnoticed were very important. I liked how she made sure that people  around the town and outlying areas were informed of the danger that was threatening them.

Kayleigh brings us to the present where we find out about the tragic way her parents died. Somehow I knew there was a connection to the past and the author grabbed my attention. When Kayleigh finds a very old ring in a shop it brought back a memory that brought her sadness.  It reminded her of a ring her mother use to wear. Had she found a clue that would solve her parent’s murder? The inscription was very hard to decipher and I wanted to follow Kayleigh on her quest to find out the truth that has plagued her for so long. It was quite interesting to discover that Kayleigh’s job of refugee coordinator was an important part of who she was as a person. Her compassion was evident as she tried her best to make everyone who came to her feel safe.

With the past  and present lingering parallel to each other, the author gives us a look at the danger and heartache Josie suffered through. The ring becomes very significant to both Josie and Kayleigh. With Kayleigh securing help from Brandon whom she met at the jewelry  store they are focused on finding out the history of the ring. Josie goes  through so much tragedy but still continued to be faithful to God. It is hard to put into words how much I loved this story. It is without a doubt one of the best books about the Alamo. The author completed her mission of tying the past to the present in a way that reminds us to hold  on to our faith and learn to trust those who God puts in our path.

“Don’t miss out on the future because of what you lost in the past.”
