SAVE THE LAST DANCE BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

Kimber Klein has left the modeling world behind. She’s sick of the constant pressure to be perfect and ready to live her life without watching every little thing she eats. She’s also really happy to finally spend some time getting to know herself and the two sisters she never met until recently. Life is good...mostly. Kimber can’t stop worrying about a stalker she’s hoping she left behind in New York City. She doesn’t think he’s found her in Bridgeport, until one day she leaves her volunteer job at the elementary school library to find two of her tires slashed. Has her old life come back to haunt her in Ohio?

Gunnar Law is satisfied with his life as a single dad. He’s still getting to know his son, Jeremy, since he’s only been fostering the teen for a short while. While parenting someone you only just met can be a little awkward, Gunnar loves Jeremy and plans to adopt him as soon as they can get the paperwork through. Life is pretty simple, and he likes it that way. Then one afternoon, he and Jeremy stop to help a distraught - and extremely beautiful - woman who had her tires slashed in the school parking lot. And suddenly life doesn’t seem quite so simple anymore.

In this final chapter of the Dance with Me series, Shelley Shepard Gray leads us back to Bridgeport, Ohio, where family comes in all shapes and sizes, everyone deserves a second chance, and falling in love happens when you least expect it.

MY REVIEW

If you haven’t read the first two books in this series I would highly recommend it. I hate to see the series end, but the author  has done a great job of making the three  sisters come to life as we experience their journey. It has been a hard road as these sisters come together to reconnect. I loved the back story on them and how they were able to finally meet. The first two books will touch on that a bit more. In this book we focus on Kimber.

I loved her character and how sweet she was. Giving up modeling will be a huge change for her but maybe she can find something that will  give her enjoyment. Coming back to her hometown is a challenge from the fast pace modeling like in New York. Kimber does have someone who has been stealing her but she hopes he can’t find her after moving and changing her number. The author slowly shows how the stalker shows up and that puts Kimber on high alert as she gets ready to do one more job in New York.

Gunnar is a character that you instantly like. He is fostering a teenage boy while working full time on his own. What a great example he is to others to reach out to this teen and help him realize that he is wanted. The relationship between Gunner and Jeremy is good but they do need to learn to communicate and trust each other more. It is interesting to follow them in the story as the topic  of adoption comes up. Will Jeremy finally get a permanent home? Can Gunnar show Jeremy how much it would mean to him to adopt Jeremy.

There is a little suspense in the  story which I really liked. The stalker once again tries to harm Kimber and the tension rises as the person will stop at nothing to get to Kimber. I was a little shocked when we find out who was the stalker. Money and fame are not always everything but pride and greed push the stalker to the edge. The story wraps up nicely and I though it was fitting that the three sisters end the story celebrating finding each other.

About the Book

Book: The Newton Chronicles: Soldiers, Crystals, and Temples

Author: Terry Overton

Genre: Middle Grade Christian Fiction

Release date: November 22, 2022

Luke Alexander’s father is “missing, presumed dead.” But Luke is confident that his father has set off on an adventure and needs his help. Searching through his father’s office, Luke – along with his friends Nathan, a pastor’s kid, and Lydia, a world traveler who knows several languages – discovers some confusing notes about Isaac Newton and finds a strange watch that once belonged to his grandfather. Knowing his archeologist father was on the hunt for Solomon’s temple, Luke and his friends decide to start a search of their own. Little do they know that their search will take them on the wildest adventures of their lives and make the stories of Solomon’s temple and other biblical events seem more real than they ever thought possible. But will their adventures lead them to Luke’s father, or will they only wind up with more questions than answers? Soldiers, Crystals, and Temples is an excellent book for anyone who loves a good adventure and who wants to find the truth that is found only in God’s Word. This first book in The Newton Chronicles will make history and the Bible come alive for readers both young and old.

More from Terry

I wanted to write this book as a way to teach middle grade and early teens about Bible history and the importance of Jerusalem in world history and in current history. In order to grab the attention of this age group, the book uses humor and suspense to transport  the three main characters, Luke, Nathan, and Lydia, throughout the Bible and ancient and current history.

Here is how it begins:

Chapter 1

The truth is, I wish I had never found it. Or at least, I wish I had found it along with a set of instructions. It started in church. Not that I fancied going every week like my mother. But I go. I am not crazy about talking to the old ladies each week who still want to pinch my cheek and tell my mother how much I have grown. I am not wild about the church windows, the candles, and all of that. There is not much to look at during church except the backs of people’s heads and the preacher. Thankfully, I figured out how to sneak my phone in church by tucking it inside my zippered Bible. Paying attention to a longwinded preacher—even if it is Nathan’s father—is a lot to ask when you are not yet fourteen. So, pretending to listen while looking at my phone was a skill I had mastered. I sit there calmly, pretending to listen while disguising the moves I am making on my phone. And then, I hear the name “Isaac Newton” in the middle of the sermon. That is when it really started. If I had known the length and complexity of what I was about to begin, I might have changed my mind. I guess I could ignore the name Isaac Newton and continue playing Fortnite on my phone. But my curiosity is alive with the name Isaac Newton ringing in my ears.

So, it begins.

***

Luke is referring to a time-travel device that he and his two good friends find and accidentally set off. The problem is they do not know how to control it. They discovered the device as they researched the travels of Luke’s missing archeologist father. Luke believes his father was searching for the original Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem when he disappeared. Now, the three suddenly find themselves in precarious positions and environments and must figure out how to survive, find Luke’s father, and somehow return back to the current time.

MY REVIEW

This book is a real adventure where we explore Biblical topics like Solomon’s Temple. Luke is searching for answers to why his dad disappeared and has his friend Nathan helping  him.  I liked the addition of  Lydia who is well versed in several languages. As they start to investigate papers in Luke’s fathers office something strange happens to them. This is where the adventure really starts.

I was intrigued by the concept of time travel as the kids find themselves in a foreign place. Can you imagine seeing soldiers with leather vests , and uniforms that are decorated? Looks like the kids have stumbled onto Roman soldiers in Jerusalem. The author does a great job of describing markets, makeshift carts and families walking among the people selling their crafts. I think we have gone back in time  to where Jesus is coming to Jerusalem. How exciting to witness such an event.

The emotions the kids experience as Jesus goes by overwhelms them. We read about it in the Bible but these kids are witnessing a truly amazing event. I would be on my knees sobbing as Jesus passed by but like the kids I would want to follow Him as well. I remember from the Bible what happened when Jesus went to the temple. Luke and his friends can’t believe they are seeing  it happen before their  eyes. Will they find Luke’s father here among all the people? Did he travel back to this period and if so what happened to him?

The author takes readers through certain events from the Bible as the kids hope to find Luke’s father in their travels. Noah, the Ark, Moses and  Solomon are  all just a few things they encounter. The author really captures each period with clarity and makes it interesting.  I loved following along as we travel back in time and witness things from the Bible. Now I’m not sure how long I can wait till the author gives us the next book in this series. I have to find out where the kids go next and if Luke’s father is out there waiting  for help.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

She Is My Child Kick-Off Package

About the Book

Book: She Is My Child

Author: Tammy Coulter

Genre: Memoir

Release date: June 7, 2022

In 2007, fourteen-month-old Ava was diagnosed with Morquio Syndrome, a rare, progressive, genetic disorder for which there was no treatment. The jarring news left her mother Tammy reeling and wondering what the future held for her daughter. As the days following the diagnosis blurred together, Tammy saw two paths before her—fall apart or fall into the arms of the Lord. For a time, she did both, struggling with her emotions one moment, feeling God’s peace the next, all while continuing to care for her young family. Slowly, through near-constant prayer and Bible study, her burgeoning faith grew stronger than her fear and distress, leading her to a path she hadn’t seen—one that would test her even more and offer help for Ava. In She is My Child, Tammy Coulter shares her spiritual journey, alongside Ava’s physical one, from diagnosis to surgeries to a long-anticipated Morquio clinical trial that had them flying to Chicago every week for more than two years. She reveals the most difficult moments and the greatest victories, as well as the humorous situations she and her daughter so often encountered, while highlighting God’s provision and what He taught her along the way.

About the Author

Tammy Coulter graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a communication arts degree and a certificate in technical communication. She was a technical editor until the birth of her son, when she became a stay-at-home mom. After the birth of her daughter, her role expanded to include researcher, student of the Psalms, and full-time prayer warrior. In addition to writing, she enjoys quilting, reading cozy mysteries, and studying Bible prophecy and current events. Tammy lives in Madison, Alabama, with her husband, two children, and their Jack Russell terrier.

More from Tammy

When my daughter Ava was diagnosed with Morquio Syndrome, I was crushed and very frightened. Morquio is a progressive disorder and there was no treatment for it. How was my mother’s heart supposed to handle that? I’ll tell you how. By immersing myself in God’s Word. Only then did I begin to calm down and grow stronger in my faith, leaning on Him in ways I never had before. As I look back, I am still amazed at everything we went through and how God was present in all of it.

When we embarked on this trial, everything was new. The name of her disorder was new, seemingly constant doctor visits were new, and then, after four years of prayer for a treatment, a clinical trial for a new drug to treat Morquio was new. And so was the location. Chicago. That meant getting on a plane every week, also new, and flying there from Alabama, just me and my daughter who had just started kindergarten. It surely felt like God was doing a lot in such a short time. And He was. He took all the newness and turned it into both a testament to His provision and lasting memories for both of us. Not all of those memories are pleasant (the cab incident for one, though we joke about it now), but they remain as evidence of God taking care of us, bringing a sweetness to each remembrance. But, oh, so many of them are, and while we were going through something quite serious, the Lord, in His goodness, allowed us adventures, fun, laughter, and new friendships. Best of all, I had the most wonderful traveling companion who, at her tender age, taught me a thing or two along the way!

Just the other day, at a routine checkup, a specialist Ava sees said, “You just never cease to amaze me at how well you do.” I added that comment to so many other comments and experiences that have paved the path of my learning to turn to God first instead of immediately jumping into the quicksand of fear that will quickly suck me in if I let it. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

Ava is now sixteen and the shy little girl I so worried over years ago currently wants to be a theater teacher.

I wrote this memoir to share how God provided for our family during a stressful period in our lives. It may make you cry some. I hope it makes you laugh a lot (let me tell you, Ava is a hoot). But the thing that would bring me the greatest joy is someone being encouraged in their own circumstances and life trials.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

MY REVIEW

As parents one of our greatest fears is to get news from a doctor that something is wrong with your child. Our mind starts to take over and before  we know it, we are lost and scared about what the next step is for our child. The author shares her journey with readers as a diagnosis for her daughter shatters their lives. I admire her determination to find out everything she could about this little known disease. We have  to be the voice for our children and she stepped up and became more educated on the subject.

There were moments where she could have given up and not trust God. Instead she turned to God and her faith and gave all her worries to Him. He is the Physician and through Him we can be healed. No matter what the doctor may say, we know there is someone powerful that can do miracles. I loved seeing how both parents were there to get the best care for their daughter and were surrounded by people who prayed and encouraged them on their journey.

In the midst of all the doctor appointments, surgery and testing there were moments that were filled with laughter and joy. I loved the part about the special tea party that was given. I could picture these precious little girls in their hats, gloves and white dresses as they sat at the eloquent table. For a little time, Ava was a little girl without a worry in the world having a tea party with her friends. Those memories will last a lifetime and I like how her parents never missed a chance to make her life full of fun.

The book is an inspiration and I loved how the author was honest in her struggles as she watched her daughter go through doctor visit after doctor visit. We all have been through trials and this story has shown me how important it is to hold on t9 our faith and know that God is in control. We may face bumps along the way, but we also become stronger as our trust in Him grows.

I enjoyed reading about the plane rides and  delays which were many. God placed so many wonderful people in Ava and her mother’s lives. God opened doors for Ava to be  admitted to a clinical trial that saw many blessings and opened doors only God could do. Along the way we see how deeper the author’s relationship grew with God and how she knew that “She is my child.” Yes she is God’s child and watched over her and the author had to learn that God was in control and needed to trust Him with “his child.”

About the Book

Book: On My Honor

Author:Patty Smith Hall

Genre: Christian / Historical Fiction / Romance / Intrigue

Release date: January, 2023

Ginny Mathis was finished with nursing school and had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. With her father away, she feels duty-bound to stay and help her mother and younger sister. While working as a clerk for the Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask Ginny and others to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. So to help occupy her teenage sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity along the coast.

Timothy Elliott is no stranger to death. As a British reporter working with the M-6, he’s numb to the losses of war after two years of fighting the Germans. Maybe that’s why he volunteered for this mission—to connect with an ex-German naval officer who stole the Furor’s battle plan for the Atlantic war. When the boat giving him passage to New York is bombed near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Tim is thrown from the boat and wakes up in the care of a group of young girls.

Ginny follows her sneaky sister on a clandestine mission and discovers the shipwreck victim. Ginny knows she must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?

About the Author

Multi-published author Patty Smith Hall lives near the North Georgia Mountains with her husband, Danny. When she’s not writing on her back porch, she’s spending time with her family or working in her vegetable garden.

More from Patty

Did you know that the Girl Scouts (or Girl Guides) serviced as spies on HIs Majesty’s Secret Service during World War One? I didn’t either until I picked up a book on female spies at my local Barnes and Noble. There were only two paragraphs about how the girls worked with the MI5 for the duration of the war. It was enough to get my heart pumping!

Being a former Girl Scout myself, I was amazed at what these young girls did to help our country during the war. What activities did the Girl Scouts/Girl Guides do in World War II? Anything asked of them. They organized drives for anything from fat (to make bullets) to paper, stepped into positions left vacant by men serving on the front and worked Victory gardens to provide food for their community. They did so many things, I can’t begin to name them all here. By March 1944, the Girl Scouts had provided over 15 million volunteer hours toward the war effort.

Isn’t that amazing? No wonder I had to write a book about them!

MY REVIEW

This book was full of surprising information about WWII. I had no idea that there were Girl Scout Troops or as they were also known as Girl Guides that helped out. They had many duties which included making bullets, working  in gardens or whatever was asked of them. Their contributions were valuable and I loved that they were highlighted in this story. It shows how much research the author did to make this story historically accurate.

After a ship is bombed, oil spills into  the ocean where Ginny and her troop are near. They go into action to help save the birds that may have been hurt by the oil spill. What Ginny’s sister Belle didn’t expect was to find an injured man on shore. I loved her courage as she took charge to help this man find a place that  was safe. Can Belle trust this man when he tells the group who he is? Why does she hide him from her sister?

Timothy is at the mercy of these young girls but they  sure impressed him with their skills. Can you believe a twelve year old could do stitches while  another one  was able to put his dislocated shoulder back in place?  Now he needs to find the man he was  traveling with. This man has valuable information  that needs to go to the  allies. This information could possibly help shorten the war by months. When he runs into Ginny he has to convince her that he can be trusted. He needs her help finding this man but she is hesitant to do so.

I loved the twist in the story when Ginny is ordered to team up with Timothy to find the German man that has valuable information. Schmidt is a smart man and seems to have help on the  island. Ginny has been keeping a secret from her family and now Timothy. She has been working with the Coast Guard as a coastal watcher. The tension between Timothy and Ginny is thick as Timothy thinks she has betrayed him. What a mess Belle and her friends made when they hid Timothy without the Coast Guard knowing. There is a war going on and no one can be trusted but Belle was so sure Timothy was being honest.

The faith element  in the book is strong.  I love the  message of holding onto our faith when we are weak and trust God to protect us. Ginny and the girls pray and ask for God to keep them safe and guide them as they fulfill their duties. Ginny has come to realize that Timothy can be trusted and is willing to work with him.

The relationship between Timothy and Ginny is sweet and I liked how they slowly began to have feelings for each other. The author gives a great account of how they have joined together to catch the man who has seemed to disappear after being seen coming on to the shore. There is a little intrigue as Schmidt has help on the island by someone no one expected. Timothy and Ginny find themselves in big trouble when they are captured. Will they be rescued before they fall victim to these men? Get ready for action and a Girl Scout troop who is ready to defend their country, I loved the story and   found it entertaining with the wonderful Girl Scouts stepping up to help their leader at all costs. Great faith message in the  story which kept our characters trusting God and praying for safety.

CRITICAL THREAT BY LYNETTE EASON

FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley tracks serial killers, using her skills as a psychiatrist and behavioral analyst to get dangerous people off the street and safely behind bars. But prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe knows that just because a killer is incarcerated doesn't mean they're not a threat. His own father, Peter, is a serial killer--in prison but certainly not out of Sam's life, as much as he wishes he was.

When bodies start showing up with Peter's MO, Sam and Grace are both called in to consult. They've met before--and though Grace thought they'd made a real connection, Sam ghosted her. They'll have to get past the awkwardness and mistrust to solve this case--especially because it's about to get personal.

USA Today bestselling author Lynette Eason doesn't give you time to catch your breath in this breakneck race to stop a serial killer.

MY REVIEW

What an amazing suspenseful book this is. The author definitely knows how to write an intense story with characters that grab your attention. I loved the two main characters and thought they worked very well together. Grace is a very intelligent woman who works as a behavioral analyst. Her job can be demanding and dangerous at times. I was impressed with her skills of recalling faces, and picking up clues at crime scenes. There is a serial killer on the loose and Grace is there to help catch the person before more women are killed.

Sam is a prison psychiatrist and he sure has his hands full with the information he is told. I can see why his job is important though. With his knowledge he has the ability to talk to prisoners and see if there is something they are hiding. Sam also has quite the family history that would scare most relationships away. I can’t wait for readers to find out more about this part of Sam. He has tried to remove himself from this secret but it won’t go away.

With a killer on  loose, Grace finds  herself teamed up with Sam to solve the crime. I loved the twists in the story and wondered at times if Grace would survive since she has caught the attention of the serial killer. The puzzles start coming together and the race is on to keep  one step ahead of the danger. There is a faith element in the story but it is light.  The ending is worthy of an award for best edge of your seat adrenaline rush take down the bad guy before he kills again scene. I loved that there is a hint for another book in this series. I will be anxiously awaiting it.

I received a copy of this book from Revell Blogger Program. The review is my own opinion.

More from Dr. Joelle

Dear reader,

God loves us and counts us precious in His sight. We are full-time ministers wherever we are, and through whatever we do. Where our feet stand is where our pulpit stands. We shine the light of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and glorify Him, often without realizing it. God desires to use all of us in and through our daily activities.

My prayer is that this book will encourage and empower you to answer His call, from faith to faith. I trust the Spirit of God will strengthen you to continue what you are currently doing and lead you into additional steps in your divine purpose.

Below, please find a few quotes from the book to bless you today.

He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.–1Thessalonians 5:24 NKJV

Abundant blessings upon you and your family,

Dr. Joelle

  • What we do portrays a greater message than what we say.
  • We cannot seek God’s approval and man’s approval at the same time.
  • The trust in ourselves decreases as our trust in God increases.
  • When Christ becomes our motive for ministry, doors open for Him, not for us.
  • Never stop starting.
  • We cannot expect from others what only God can give.
  • Humility is the gateway to knowing Him.
  • What is on the inside comes out under pressure.
  • We do not complete with others, but we complete one another.
  • If I criticize who I am, I criticize God Himself.
  • What we dwell on, we eventually dwell in.
  • We cannot respect what we don’t value.
MY REVIEW

I enjoyed reading this book as it guides you to the plans He has for you. I have been struggling with what I’m to be doing as far as ministry. I was in Children’s minsters for over fifteen years, but I know that my season is over for that now. So I wait and listen to the message at church every week. Perhaps I am to just sit and be fed for a season so I can get filled up again. This book is timely for me as I discover the stepping stones to find my destiny.

I like how the author goes through the seven steps with readers and explains them with scriptures and illustrations from the Bible. Water baptism is a very important step as we get rid of the “fleshy tendencies” and become a new creature in Christ. I remember when I was baptized at the age of twelve. I don’t think I really  understood it but my parents insisted I do it. Years later I knew I had to be baptized again because now I knew the importance of washing away the old and coming up from the water as a new person. It was a freedom like I had never felt.

At the end of every chapter is questions that I would recommend doing as it helps you apply what was taught in the book. Don’t miss doing the Action Steps as this is a valuable tool to help you on your journey. The author closes each chapter with a prayer.

I appreciate the personal stories the author used as we are encouraged to overcome the tricks the enemy tries to use to divert our attention, tell us lies, discourage us and try to turn away from God. Each step in the book is foundation that grows as you learn how to find your destiny.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
