Anne wonders what secret her three older brothers are hiding. When she finds out they joined to fight with the Union Army and would leave the next day, she gives them each one of her favorite two-cent pieces and says, “I want you to take one of my new two-cent pieces. I learned these coins are the first to have the words ‘In God We Trust.’ I just memorized Psalm 91:2. ‘I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.’”

Out of a heart of love, Anne gives six of her special coins away hoping the message on the two-cent pieces will strengthen each person’s faith.

About the Author

A former coin collector for over fifty years, Denniscombines his love for the Bible, children’s literature, and sharing stories about the history behind coins.

He is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and a Fellow of the National Writing Project.

He retired as a professor of Speech Communications from Barstow Community College. He and his wife served as English and public speaking teachers ten summers overseas.

The Two-Cent Piece is Dennis’s first of seven books in the In God We Trust Series from Elk Lake Publishing, Inc.

Children who collect coins will LOOK at coins differently. They can…

Look for people. For example, who is on the nickel? (Hint: Thomas Jefferson)

Look and learn why some coins are more valuable than other coins. There is a difference between the face value of a coin (a dime is worth ten cents), and its value to collectors.

MY REVIEW

This short book is a great way for children to learn about giving and having faith. Sweet little Anne has treasured coins that she gives to her brothers and a boy she meets. They are going off to serve in the war. She wants them to know that God will protect them. N each coin it says, “In God We Trust.”

The time period in the book is during the civil war and is a good way to introduce children to history. I liked how the author had each boy that received a coin share what the coin meant to them. The book is beautifully illustrated and introduces the fun of coin collecting.

“What kind of research does a contemporary book need? I mean, she’s a bookstore owner in a town you’ve been to several times. What’s there to research?”

I can’t be the only author to get questions like this. And I certainly can’t be the only one who has to fight the urge to laugh. Folks, authors research everything. In Twice Sold Tales, I think I looked up almost as much as I did in my Meddlin’ Madeline Mysteries!

Because here’s the deal. What I didn’t know about Red Wing, Minnesota wouldn’t have hurt the story most of the time. Who cares that Bev’s Café has amazing creamy cucumbers? It doesn’t technically matter. Well, except to my character who hates veggies but will eat those. They make her feel virtuous. And you get to know about it.

But… what you discover about a place or a time or an occupation or whatever can totally change the course of your story. Case in point? I went to a website about River City Days because my niece suggested it might be a good thing for Noah to do with his son. That led me to the Farmer’s Markets and to other things. How I got to the first Ghost Walk in Red Wing taking place this year? I don’t even know. What I do know is that the moment I read about it, I knew Harper had to go. And if she did, and if Milton were the instigator, Noah had to go. #BecauseMatchmaker.

And this is where it got really cool. To make the walk as authentic as I could, I read everything I could find about it. And I discovered something super cool. Like… blow you out of the water cool.

Red Wing, Minnesota sits near the shore of Lake Pepin. Little House on the Prairie lovers will remember this as the lake that Laura Ingalls crossed in the wagon as they left the Big Woods of Wisconsin (you know, right across the river/lake from Red Wing???) Well… Lake Pepin has a monster—the Nessie of the Mississippi. Yes, you read that right… a monster! I went looking and guess what? The “monster” has a name. Pepie! Needless to say, Pepie became a an important part of my story. Because how could he not?

And… I happened to find a stuffed Pepie at Treats & Treasures in Lake City, just south of Red Wing, so I ordered a couple for giveaways—including the one with this blog tour. Happy reading, and what do you think? Shouldn’t someone write Pepie’s story?

MY REVIEW

I feel so inspired after reading this book. Why you may ask yourself? Well thanks for asking. I feel as if I could open a bookstore, design it to a degree with a certain person’s help and make it successful. I would also have to bring Harper along to run the store. To say that I love this character is an understatement. Her sass alone makes her my best friend. I loved her shirts she wore with sayings that make me laugh. I think I may have to see if they are available to purchase. She takes no pleasure in seeing young children come into her bookstore and torture the books. No they are not welcomed and Harper makes it very clear when chaos happens when children are out of control in her store. She has enough going on with trying to keep the store open, so no tomfoolery is aloud.

Getting to know Noah and his son was a welcome addition to the story. I liked how these two become a family and how Noah makes sure Bennie knows that he is safe. I didn’t mind at all that Bennie wanted to do ballet and loved how he thrived at it. Of course there is always that one kid that just can’t help themselves when it comes to being a bully. I don’t like bullies at all and I’m glad that Noah addressed the issue right away so Bennie knew his dad would stand up for him. Through this experience of being bullied, Bennie begins to understand that his dad loves him and will always be there for him. Noah also will learn a valuable lesson about risking everything to protect the ones he loves.

Now let’s get to our friend Milton. What a wonderful character the author has created. He comes to town to help Harper revamp her store and make it prosperous. The ideas that Milton comes u0 with are exciting except I’m not sure about doing research on the ghost trail. That one gave me chills and I’m right there with Noah not wanting to go. One intriguing fact in the book is about “Nessie in the Mississippi.” Pepie is the monsters name and it is quite the phenomenon in the town. I must have a stuffed Pepie and will not rest until I find my own. Pepie reminds me of a sweet dinosaur and when I was younger my brothers called me Dino the dinosaur. So yes I need my own Pepie. I love everything about it and how it is related to the story from Laura Ingalls Wilder which will always be my favorite story from childhood.

The story is filled with a charming town that the author brings to life. Her research makes the story come alive and maybe there is a trip in my future. Milton surprises me with his compassion to help others. His knowledge of how to make a business better is a gift. I loved how the author mentions many books in the story and stopped and looked up every one of them. This has been an honor to read this book and see how people come together to help each other out. I can’t wait to read the next in the series and see who Milton will meet and share his gift of compassion and happy endings.

What comes to your mind when you think about fairytale retellings? Is it Disney’s 1950 retelling of Cinderella? Glittery swirls of magic? Talking animals? Pretty gowns? Or, perhaps, frying pans or a sassy dragon?

My interest regarding fairytales was first piqued when I was young. Though I was only three, I distinctly remember riding in the car and flipping through the three-story fairytale collection my mom just purchased for me. I couldn’t read, but the bright colors and abundance of animals entranced me. Now I not only read fairytales, I write retellings of them.

Why, though? Aren’t fairytales just fun stories that sometimes impart a lesson?

No. Fairytales are much more than that. The majority of fairytales contain deep, important lessons the authors or culture of that time wanted their readers and listeners to learn from. Fairytales offer encouragement, hope, and include gentle reminders about doing the right thing even when we don’t want to.

Take, for instance, The Snow Queen, which is the fairytale I modeled Shattered Reflection after. In The Snow Queen, the forefront themes are loyalty and perseverance. No matter what trials the female protagonist endures, she pushes on with the mindset that rescuing her best friend is worth the effort and pain.

Aside from being rich in wry humor, breathtaking scenic descriptions and worldbuilding, and interesting characters, The Snow Queen contains faith and reminds readers that our ultimate source of strength is God—not ourselves.

This is what I wanted to emulate in Shattered Reflection. This story—with its broken characters, tattered kingdoms, and insidious antagonists—contains plenty of faith amidst pain, questions, and wounded hearts. I wanted to illustrate that, no matter what we’re going through, God is in control and nothing and no one ever slips from His grasp.

Shattered Reflection is a Christian fairytale retelling which incorporates heavy faith elements, numerous action scenes, clean romance, and plenty of evil villains.

Content Warning:
SR1 contains heavy topics, although none are described in a gratuitous and gory manner. There is also a lot of violence, so I do not recommend this book for anyone younger than fifteen. If you are older than fifteen and are easily bothered by such content, then this probably is not the book for you.

MY REVIEW

I love that this is a fairy tale retelling with an emphasis on faith throughout the book. I loved the description the author uses to make us feel icy cold as we join the characters on the adventure. I did look up what the story is based on and found that it was close to the original story in details. The cover of the book is breathtaking and I applaud whoever designed it.

This adventure includes several characters who are trying to do the right thing and rely on their faith when faced with danger. I love the bond between brother and sister who are Layree and Loren. Layree is very determined to rescue her brother and I liked how she was strong willed and never backed down. She has to trust someone she has never done before but working with this person may help her get her brother back.

There are some harsh scenes when Loren faces the cruelty from the people who kidnapped him. When he witnessed the slaves hard at work and the threat of death if they didn’t do well was a little too much for Loren to take in. As he and Nordica meet they soon form a bond. I can’t imagine the evil power that Nodica’s aunt and uncle display as they are hungry for more. I enjoyed how Loren was able to continue in his faith and believed that he would be able to help Nordica and also hopefully see his sister again.

There are quite a few characters in the book that at times did keep me hopping. The author does a marvelous job of having the characters interact with each other either through danger, pride or standing on faith. There is one character that captured my heart and I embraced their bravery. Who is that character? Well I will leave it to readers to see if they can guess who it is. The story provides great entertainment with a good vs evil theme and plenty of action along with emotions that enhance the adventure.

What a fun, new adventure writing WAGONS WEST! Ron and I stepped up to try a new program Amazon offered authors called Kindle Vella where we’d write episodes rather than chapters. In a year’s time, WAGONS WEST had thirty-five episodes and was over one hundred thousand words, about four hundred pages.

We continue to write Season Two of the “New Beginnings Family Saga” SETTLERS & TOFFS, with the same characters going into the following year, 1850, scattering into three settings: those from Season One’s wagon train who decide to settle Auburn, California, those just starting the sojourn west with Emmerson Pierce, scout in Season One, now wagon master, and we sail the Atlantic to England when the son of the Earl of Farnsworth receives word of his older brother’s death.

The characters in WAGONS WEST made it so special for me, and I believe you’re sure to love them as well. Robert E. Lee’s older brother Ambrose is our wagon master and the story’s main hero. As all my heroes (thanks to Ron’s part of our collaboration) he is strong but flawed.

Our matriarchal heroine Blaire Beechy, recently widowed, has sold everything and uprooted her three children—two almost grown daughters Adeline and Beatrice and their twelve-year-old brother Tucker—only to discover Captain Lee’s idiotic rules forbid an unmarried woman from traveling in his wagon train. Why must there be a man at the head of each family?

WAGONS WEST offers readers adventures with a colorful cast of characters who support, cause trouble, act a bit crazy, and play ball to make the story one you just can’t put down. All along the way, God is questioned, given praise, denied, and surrendered to, saving sojourners again and again—not only in the spiritual realm.

It’s a story I’ve certainly enjoyed writing, and I’m hoping you’ll enjoy reading WAGONS WEST as much!

MY REVIEW

I adore stories during this time period and when you add a wagon train to it well I’m sold. The author delivers an experience where readers will feel like they are riding along the trails in a slow moving wagon with dust, heat and rain facing their journey. It was easy to feel every movement because of the vivid picture painted with words. It is no secret that I love this author’s writing and am always amazed at how the stories capture my attention right away.

I’ve decided not to go into much detail in this review because I don’t want to spoil anything for readers. The characters are wonderful, the trials they go through are heartbreaking mixed with joy. I love the strong female lead in the story and her determination to make a better life for her children.

There is one character that stands out to me and her fight to survive the demons inside her. For some this may be hard to read, but I found it important because it followed a Biblical example where demons were cast off. It is not spoken about much, but I liked how the author handled it. It gives hope to those who struggle emotionally and sheds a light on how God can save those who seem hopeless. As always I have come away with a deeper relationship with Jesus after reading a book from this author. I appreciate that she tackles hard subjects and shows how Jesus sets us free from our sins.
