Two Southerners thrown together by the Union army. He’s on a quest for vengeance. She’s determined to preserve her family.

Seth is forced to return to his unit in Virginia, and he never anticipated their next meeting would be when he’s taken to Louisville as a prisoner. More from Susan

As a “pantser” when it comes to writing, I never know how the story will develop or which characters will demand more “stage” time. Lydia Gibson was always destined to be a main character, but I had no idea who would be her leading man. When Seth Morgan appeared in Rescuing Rose, I saw him only as an object to create tension between Rose and Noah. Then I learned how his wife died and knew he had to be rescued from his grief and anger. At first, I thought he might match up with Celeste, but it made more sense for him to be drawn to Lydia, who was a war widow. He was a fun protagonist as he loudly proclaimed his lack of interest in marrying again but always went out of his way to assist the women he met. Seth liked to create the illusion of being a tough fighter, but what he really wanted was someone to love and share his life. As Lydia struggled to overcome her poor self-image, Seth discovered his strength in following the path of peace.

MY REVIEW

This has been a wonderful story that captures the historical facts in a way that brings them to life. Being driven out of her home by Union Soldiers changed Lydia’s life. Her first thought is to get as far away as she can and protect her step daughter. Their journey finds them in a new town unsure what would happen to them. I can’t image the turmoil Lydia’s life took as she tried to survive on meager supplies. I liked how she and a group of other women came together to look out for each other. Lydia has been told that her husband died so she is on her own now.

Seth is my favorite character because he is kind, willing to help others and watches out for the women who took over his home while he hides in the basement. Seth has longed to take action against the man who murdered his wife and that bitterness may cost him a future. I liked how the author incorporates historical facts in the story  such as the assassination of President Lincoln. This news affects everyone and Seth wonders what will happen to him when he himself becomes a prisoner.

The relationship between Seth and Lydia is slow and I appreciate how the author nurtures this bond with faith. It is not always easy for our main characters to see eye to eye but they sure go through a lot on their journey. One part of the story illustrates about forgiveness. Lydia will face a hard decision when someone she never wanted to see again needs help in their final days. Seth will be face to face with the man who has caused him pain and anger. I loved how the author uses faith in these moments to show how important it is to forgive and also be able to ask for forgiveness.

The story is not without a bit of action and a look at a war that pitted friends and families against each other. The research of this era is evident with the details used to make the story realistic. I loved the writing and how the author use this story to help one person become more confident in themselves and demonstrates how peace allows both main characters to give grace and find happiness.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

Linda Ford is a multi-published author who makes her home in rural Alberta, Canada where she is near enough to the Rockies to see them every day. She didn’t always want to be an author. In fact, she dreamed of running an orphanage. In a way, her dream came true. She married a rancher. They had four children then adopted ten, an experience which has given her much fodder for the happy-ever-after stories she writes. Growing up on the prairie and learning to notice the small details it hides has given her an appreciation for watching God at work in His creation. Her upbringing also included being taught to trust God in everything and through everything—a theme that resonates in her stories.

Mail-Order Bride Substitute is her 100th title.

More from Linda

For the most part, I write westerns.  Historical western romances to be exact. Now I’m not a cowgirl. I don’t even ride horseback. (Shh. Don’t tell anyone.) So, you might well ask, what qualifies me to write stories of this era and these kinds of people?

Well, I could list a number of reasons. 1) I had a father who liked to visit museums and tell stories about settling the west. Not only that, but for a few summers when I was very young, my mother and my siblings accompanied him to live in a…well, the best way to describe it is to say it was a cabin on wheels with nothing inside but a few cupboards and rough bunk beds. You could say I experienced pioneer life firsthand albeit it through the eyes of a child 2) As a child, I read anything I could get my hands on, including Zane Grey. I fell in love with his heroes, his heroines and his settings. 3) I dated and married a man who lives to watch westerns. And as a good date and later, a good wife, I spent many hours watching them. 4). I still love those larger-than-life heroes (aka cowboys) and the stubborn but kind heroines.

Mail-Order Bride Substitute is the third in a 5-book (and counting) series of Montana Mail-Order Brides. I like creating families and have done exactly that in this series. There are four brothers—the Shannons–and then their friends who see how successful their marriages are and decide to try this mail-order bride business for themselves.

I tend to create strong families and this series is no exception. Mrs. Shannon was a kind, guiding mother. Mr. Shannon was tough as old leather yet fair. Their sons do their best to honor them. I also prefer settings that include mountains which is why I have set this series in beautiful western Montana.

I love these stories. Or maybe it’s the cowboys and the brides who gather their courage around them to travel west to marry—and yes, tame—these young men.

Incidentally, this is my 100th book to be published.

MY REVIEW

I love reading books from this author because I am able to picture the time period easily with her vivid details. She brings the story to life with words that flow across the pages and helps readers relate to the characters with ease. I have read several marriage of convenience stories lately but this one really spoke to me. I loved how it was emotional and was not the typical couple gets married and suddenly they are in love story.

This story has depth and is realistic because it shows two people who struggle with their feelings and don’t rush into marriage right away. As you read the story you will find that Olivia was not who Riley had invited to become his bride. What Olivia does is decide to prove that she was meant to be at the ranch all along. Her determination and faith see her through difficult moments. Trying to convince Riley that she will not leave is a big task but I loved how her word was something you can count on. Her grace and quiet spirit is refreshing and I liked that she didn’t try to push the issue of marriage.

Riley is not happy when he discovers that  the woman he thought was coming to marry him, sends a substitute instead. I think perhaps he was a little upset and wasn’t sure Olivia would last a day at the  ranch. Riley is a hard worker and is very respectful of Olivia. There are some funny moments in the  story when Olivia tries to cook eggs. Obviously she is not a cook which puts doubt in Riley’s mind that he can marry her. He learns a valuable lesson about judging someone by where they come from.

With a beautiful backdrop of the old west, we are transported back to the days where hard work happened from sunup to sundown. The women cooked, cleaned and made sure their family was cared for.  Riley and Olivia both need to trust each other and allow God to show them that they were not brought together by accident. I enjoyed how their relationship was not rushed but  allowed to slowly blossom as they began to share their past. It is a sweet story that illustrates how love can happen if you open your heart and allow the  past to not define you.

I want to congratulate the author on her 100th published book. It is an honor to read books by an author who shares faith through stories that bring us closer to God.

Release date: March 14, 2023

Can summer love survive amid mystery and mayhem?

When Abigail Greenwood and her cousins settle in for their annual summer retreat at the stunning and impressive Sagamore Resort in the Adirondacks,  all she wants is to spend as much time as possible plunking out stories on her typewriter. Behind the scenes at A Summer at Sagamore

When a dear writing friend approached me about writing a contribution for Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts, my heart leapt. The Gilded Age is my favorite time to write. Ask me to write anything from 1870 to 1910, and I’m hooked. I love the way traditions are colliding with progress and changing the world in this era.

An exciting time for women, I knew the heroine, Abigail, would be a writer, enthralled with her new, clunky, heavy manual typewriter. Independent, set to inherit her grandmother’s wealth, she would not be looking for romance. I wanted Abby’s grandmother, cousin, and sister to give us plenty of humor and fun along the way. Meanwhile, Abby, would portray a young woman on the brink of writing about her faith, inspired by a few pioneer writers and a previous experience to join the endeavor to pave the way for others to do the same.

Along comes our hero, Jackson. Jack has this Clark Gable kind of vibe, only younger, more handsome. He has strong faith, but it’s quiet, stifled by his position in society. Abby brings out the best in him. I loved watching their romance blossom and their trust in God grow amid the mystery of all the happenings at the Sagamore. More themes came out of the book than I expected. I can’t wait to share it with you.

MY REVIEW

A beautiful story that captures the time period with grace, romance and  a hint of romance.  I loved following Abby and her family on vacation as they spend the summer at a resort. The description of the resort sounded wonderful and the perfect place to relax and perhaps find romance. With vivid details of the dresses worn, I could imagine how elegant the women looked as they went to different activities. Abby loves being at the resort but  she also wants to concentrate on her writing. Will someone draw her attention away from her typewriter?

Jack is a dashing gentleman who captures Abby’s attention right away. I thought it was funny to see Abby try to not look interested but alas she was smitten with Jack. Their time together is spent having picnics, horseback riding and attending dances that are festive. I was rooting for Jack to win Abby’s heart and loved how respectful he was towards her.

The author puts in a delightful mystery as sabotage soon takes over at the resort. Guests are treated to a soup laced with too much salt, a break in  at one of the guests rooms and a mishap with a saddle that could have caused someone to be critically injured. Jack and Abbey decide they must work together to solve the mystery before something tragic happens. The pair sort out clues and begin to also develop feelings  for each other as well. The faith that  was evident in the  story brought peace and wisdom to our characters.

I loved how the mystery was solved and adored the ending. This book has been a joy to read and I look forward to the next in this delightful series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Elva

Researching our true American history for this novel inspired me so much in a day when many are trying to ignore or wipe out our Christian foundations and heroic acts. I want to share two particular true stories which I use in my novel that should bless and inspire you, too.

First, I set my story the year after President George Washington died. He died December 14, 1799, after a bout of laryngitis following a horseback ride in the snow to check his plantation. But truly, his death was brought on by the horrid bleeding (phlebotomy) common in that day that three prominent physicians put him through. History records they bled eight quarts from his body in about thirteen hours. The physicians soon observed… “that he expired without a struggle.” –Of course he couldn’t struggle, with all that blood loss. I’ve told you this to tell you Washington’s last words.

Washington, at about eleven o’clock in the evening, uttered his last words: “Father of mercies, take me unto thyself,” and “tis well.”

On Washington’s tomb at Mount Vernon is engraved: “I am the Resurrection and the Life; saith the Lord. He that believeth in Me, though he were dead yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.”

The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., which is 555 feet tall, has engraved on its metal cap the Latin phrase “Laus Deo,” which means “Praise be to God.”

The other true story of our history that inspired me proves the bravery and derring-do of the fledging Navy and Marines during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. Many don’t know that Washington actually disbanded the original Navy right after the Revolution as he had no intention of putting this almost penniless new nation into any more wars or try to find the money to support a Navy.

But Barbary Muslim pirates in the Mediterranean started plundering our merchant ships no longer under British protection and taking entire crews into slavery. We ended up paying huge sums of tribute for questionable protection and hefty ransoms to redeem any of our crews taken into slavery. President Thomas Jefferson saw the great need for a strong Navy and went about securing it during his two terms (1801-.1809). A famous byword of those days became: “Millions for defense, not a cent for tribute.”

Naval heroes like William Eaton, Edward Preble, Stephen Decatur, and Marine lieutenant Presley O’Bannon blazoned across our history during the turbulent wars against the Muslim Barbary pirates and sultans. One incident stands out that I decided to include in my novel with my fictional hero, Marine Lieutenant Adam White, added to the story and my heroine Hannah, awaiting letters from him.

Jefferson and Congress commissioned the building of a Navy frigate, the USS Philadelphia, the largest, most modern for the period, to do battle in this Barbary war. America was proud of this ship and it’s potential. But to everyone’s dismay, the Philadelphia got stuck on a sand bar near Tripoli’s harbor, and soon ended up captured by the Tripoli pirates, and its crew taken into slavery. Even though the American captain damaged the ship as best he could before being forced to surrender it, the horror was compounded when the Muslims bragged they would soon repair the ship and use it against us. President Jefferson, Congress, the Navy, and all America suffered some dark days indeed.

But naval hero Stephen Decatur came up with a daring, dangerous plan to slip into the well-guarded Tripoli Harbor where the ship was anchored while being repaired. He chose a few handpicked Marines (my novel hero included!) who would attempt to burn the Philadelphia and keep it from ever being used against us. They would have no Navy backup and would all end up in slavery if the Muslims discovered them.

You’ll have to read my novel (or do research) to find out how this ended!

MY REVIEW

What made this book so interesting to me was the rich history the author provided to capture the realistic time period. We learn  about the ships that  sailed the seas to protect Americans and the brave men who served without hesitation. I learned about how George Washington died and was quite shocked at what  really  happened to him. If only the physicians had known that what they thought was the correct treatment really  made him weaker by the hour.

The Navy and Marines were the heroes  in this story. Shipping off to secret missions and encountering pirates was just part of what they faced on the open sea. Dealing with weather that can sink a ship was also a threat to the many who served. I admired Adam and his bravery. The assignments he was given were scary yet he did them with honor and dedication. He did have a secret that he has kept to himself for awhile which inserts itself into the story well.

Hannah didn’t have a great start to life as she was abandoned on the road.  By God’s grace a family found her and raised her as their own. She became a very intelligent young  woman who wanted to become  a nurse. Although her and Adam have been raised as brother and sister, the author gives us a surprise that changes their relationship. I loved how this part of the story was slowly revealed and seemed honest and pure.

There are some really good moments in the story where God shines. Hannah has a chance to not only meet someone who abandoned her but also is given the opportunity to lead them to Christ.  This for me was the most important part of the entire story. We witness someone who thought their sins were too much and God would not forgive  them. What a beautiful illustration of forgiveness and surrendering to God as Hannah not only forgives this person but watches a true miracle happen when they declare God as their savior.

With a well researched book and a story of love and forgiveness this will be an enjoyable historical book for all.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
