Karen Baney is passionate about writing stories full of flawed characters. She enjoys weaving together stories of second chances, redemption, and overcoming personal trials. As a transplant to Arizona, she loves researching the state’s history and finding ways to seamlessly incorporate real history and real settings into her novels. In addition to writing and speaking, Karen works as a Software Development Manager for a Christian ministry.

Her faith plays an important role both in her life and in her writing. Karen and her husband, Jim, make their home in Gilbert, Arizona, with their two dogs, Bella and Daisy. Both Jim and Karen are active at Rock Point Church in Queen Creek, Arizona.

You’ve Got Mail?

As an author, sometimes you write something so identifiable to readers that you (the author) completely miss the obvious. Yeah, I did that in Falling for a Shy Cowboy.

Since Dylan Vargas, our hero, deals with a speech impediment, I thought a great way to help him connect with his one true love would be through a dating app—one where he keeps avoiding meeting in person. His best friend, Adan, signed him up for the dating app with a profile picture that obscures part of his face. When Dylan looked through the app, he finds Adan’s sister Brisa on the app. Imagine his excitement that his long-term crush was available!

So, Dylan responds to Brisa’s profile as Wrangler92. He’s much more comfortable pouring out his heart through messages in the dating app than fighting with his speech impediment in person. She’s keeping a few secrets of her own through their interactions on the app, creating tension.

And viola! The You’ve-Got-Mail “trope” successfully applied.

If only I had realized that’s what I’d done. It wasn’t until one reviewer wrote, “Who doesn’t like a little You’ve Got Mail in a cowboy romance?”

This is where I face-palmed, laughed out loud, and finally realized my shy cowboy and his one true love are clearly written like the old Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks movie You’ve Got Mail.

Anyway, I will be forever grateful to Jerah A. for pointing out the obvious connection. I hope you enjoy my take on a shy cowboy who woos a single mom a la You’ve Got Mail style.

MY REVIEW

I liked this story for so many reason. First I loved Dylan and how shy he is. He has tried all his life to overcome stuttering but as he grew up it continues especially when he gets nervous. Being a worker at his family’s ranch, he encounters people who come out for riding lessons. I felt so bad for him when he tried to help a group but gets frustrated when he struggles to talk. Maybe it’s time he gets some help to overcome this problem that affects his speech. Having this fear of being judged all his life has given him a lack of confidence. I laughed when his friend has this great plan to help him overcome his shyness around women.

Brisa is a good character who finds herself working at the ranch that Dylan’s family runs. Thanks to her brother who works there she is offered a job that will give her a fresh start. I couldn’t wait to find out her back story and how her sweet four year old ended up in a wheelchair. There is also history between her and Dylan which will play a big part in this heartwarming story.

The story is emotional at times where we see our two main characters overcoming their past. They are vulnerable yet ready to be set free from things that have held them back. Guilt, insecurity and finding faith again brings this story a much deserved five star rating.

In Jackson’s Fall, the female protagonist, Gabrielle Autumn, and her Grandparents own a bakery in the small town of Roaring Springs. Although I don’t mention this recipe in the book, it is one that I really believe Grandmama Mayfair would have baked and sold in her shop. And, perhaps, would have taught Gabrielle to make also. It’s totally delicious and diverse in that you can use whatever kind of fruit that you wish.

My mother made it often in our house! A perfect dessert for a historical, western setting…and a modern day family meal. I truly hope you enjoy making and eating it at your supper table.

Mountain Pie

1 cup of self rising flour

¾ cup of sugar

1 stick of butter

¾ cup of milk

Fruit Filling

Melt butter in baking dish

Pour batter over butter

Put fruit or pie filling on top of batter

Bake in moderate oven (around 350 degrees), 15-20 minutes

Serve as is or with ice cream.

MY REVIEW

Another great story from a very creative author. I love her western themed stories and this one is so so good. Let’s start with my favorite character, Jackson. He is humble, strong willed at times but has a heart of gold. The thorn in his side is his brother. He tries to give his brother grace but it’s hard when threats keep coming his way. I liked how he was protective of a certain young woman who we will talk about in a minute. I must say Jackson is someone you want on your side. Being jilted at the altar by Peneople doesn’t set well when he realizes she runs off with his brother. Will he be able to reconcile with his brother?

Gabrielle is a breath of fresh air who comes into Jackson’s life. I liked Gabrielle’s sweet disposition and how she saw Jackson as a man who needed to know he was worthy. I think she is good for him, but she does hold back her feelings for him. A little trust needs to build between these two before any thoughts of a relationship start. I loved how she stood up when threatened by someone and the part about a sweet little puppy made my heart full.

The story illustrates how God never turns his back on us. Jackson has been angry at God but will he be able to turn his heart from bitterness to hope and seek forgiveness? Danger follows our two main characters as revenge is heavy on someone’s mind. Jealousy plays a part as well as a brother with greed who is out to destroy everything his brother loves. The author does a great job of keeping the story going with realistic characters and action that made me gasp at times.

I loved the story and how lessons of forgiveness, trust and hope blend together making this a must read. Be sure to grab a copy for yourself. I would also recommend reading the other books from this author as they each are beautifully written.

About the Author

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…

In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing.

It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

MY REVIEW

This book would be a great tool for youth leaders. It focuses on the struggles of a youth leader and how she desired to be a good example to the teens she was ministering to. I think all of us can relate to Hope as she tries to juggle being perfect, dealing with peer pressure and being called a hypocrite. Are we the same at church as we are out in the world? Hope goes on an emotional journey where she comes to a point where her life starts to spin out of control.

I liked how the author takes readers inside a youth group and shows us what teens think as they listen to the leaders. It is hard to reach everyone but what if you are pretending to be a Christian and one of the teens see you in a questionable place? It is hard for me to express how I felt after reading this book without crying. I know exactly how Hope felt. My dad was a preacher so of course my brothers and I were expected to be perfect. We were far from that and the enemy destroyed our family.

Hope starts hearing rumors about herself and starts to seek counsel to get back on the right path. The enemy knew her weakness and tried to turn her away from God. The moment she steps in to the homeless shelter as a volunteer makes a impact on her. There she saw people in need who wanted to be reassured and to find grace. Her heart breaks when she sees someone she didn’t expect to be there.

I appreciate the author writing a story that hits home for many of us. Are we part time Christians? Do we represent God in our everyday walk? These questions should wake us up and make us look around at who we are following. I don’t want to be the reason someone turns away from God. Hope seeks help and finds her answers when she asks for forgiveness. It was a bold move for her to confess to the teens her mistakes. Her testimony helped others see they can turn away from the worldly things and get right with God.

101 Questions

In Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, Derin Vargas desperately wants to change how he sees and interacts with women. One of his buddies recommended an app for 101 Questions to Ask on a Date.

When I incorporated this into the novel, the interactions between Madison and Derin became so much easier (and fun!) to write. I searched for new questions and added them with answers from the character’s point of view.

But where did this idea come from? A marriage seminar. I highly recommend using 101 questions for any couple, married or just dating. It’s a great way to get to know the person you’re with, without all the awkward “what do we talk about?”.

I hope you enjoy this excerpt from Falling for a Bossy Cowboy from Madison Moore’s point of view.

Madison watched as Derin pulled his phone from his shirt pocket, swiping and tapping a few times. Then he looked up, expression serious, and asked the most bizarre question.

“If you were stranded on a deserted island and could choose any three things to have with you, what would you pick and why?”

“What?” Her eyes rounded.

“You heard the question, Madi.”

She chewed slowly, mulling it over.

“That’s hard.”

“Right?” He chuckled.

“What would you pick?”

“No dodging it. I’ll answer after you do.”

“Ugh. Let’s assume I have food and water.”

Derin narrowed his eyes and conceded.

“My Bible.”

He rolled his eyes.

“What? It’s a legit answer.”

“So says every church goer. Next?”

“You wouldn’t?”

He wagged a finger at her as he stabbed a chunk of roast before popping it in his mouth.

“Chocolate.”

Derin tossed his head back and chuckled loudly. So much so that a few heads turned their direction. “Women.”

“And a Costco-sized bag of ground coffee.”

“How are you making the coffee?”

“I don’t know. I’m sure I could figure it out.”

Madison pushed her empty plate away. “Your turn.”

“First choice? You.”

Heat flamed her cheeks. What was he saying?

“Second choice would be Djano.”

Madison quirked an eyebrow.

“My horse. And that’s only because you put the stipulation that food and water aren’t an issue. So, he won’t starve.”

She snorted. “Me and your horse.”

“Yup. And my hat. That’s it.”

“Me, your horse, and your hat.” She shook her head. “Why me?”

Derin’s eyes glinted with mirth. “You’re insanely beautiful. Smart. Very entertaining.”

Her cheeks warmed at the compliment.

“We would fight like cats and dogs.”

He shook his head. “I’m not buying that.”

“I can’t stand you.”

“Not buying that either.” Derin grinned. “Here’s another one. Have you ever won an award for a sport?”

Madison snatched up the phone. “Huh. That’s really the question. What is this?”

“One hundred and one questions to ask on a date.”

“Is this a date?”

“Welcome to the party, Madi.”

Heat warmed her face. Derin was one of a kind. She shook her head and handed him his phone.

MY REVIEW

This is a nice story where we see two people that find themselves having to work together. I enjoyed learning a bit about tennis and the hard work it takes to be at the top of your game. Madison finds herself in rehab after an injury wondering if her career is over. She is pretty opinionated and doesn’t like being sidelined. Oh my does she have a journey ahead of her.

Derin is now running a new sports complex. He isn’t quite sure this is where he wants to be but I like that he is ready for the challenge. He is a nice guy who doesn’t hit it off with Madison. Let’s say they are complete opposites. This makes for a fun adventure as they begin to open up to each other.

I love a story that includes growth in a character as well as finding the path God has chosen for them. There are moments when they each become vulnerable and share their struggles. This for me is where the story shines. Don’t miss this adventure filled with faith, overcoming obstacles and a new beginning.

Why Sister Island in the Thousand Islands in the Gilded Age?

What inspired you to write Julia’s Joy?

I have cruised past Sister Island Lighthouse a dozen times or more, and it’s a beautiful lighthouse. But it’s smack dab in the middle of nowhere in an isolated section the St. Lawrence River. Though it’s along the main shipping channel, I’ve always wondered how someone could live on such an island. So, I started imagining what it would be like for a young woman to be stuck there in the prime of her youth, and Julia’s story was born!

Why do you write about the Thousand Islands?

I grew up just twenty minutes from the Thousand Islands—the setting for all my stories—in upstate New York. Actually, half of the 1,864 islands are in NY and the other half in Ontario, Canada. So, I spent every summer and more exploring the beautiful region. I’ve stayed on several of the islands and camped and rented cottages there. So, after I wrote my debut novel about the largest island, Wolfe Island, I was hooked. There are so many fascinating stories to tell.

Now, I take an annual Thousand Islands Book Tour to the islands where I meet with fans, friends, and family. I’ve stayed in Singer Castle, Casa Blanca, and other places that are the settings of my book. I’ve talked with the owners of the islands, local historians, and researched in the Thousand Islands archives.

All my novels are based on a specific place in the Thousand Islands and are the true stories of the owners of that island. So, my plot is generally true. Then I overlay the storyline of the fictional servants to create the story. This makes my stories a bit more challenging, but I love a good challenge.

Why do you write about the Gilded Age?

The American Gilded Age was a time of rapid technical advances, industrialization, and thousands of new inventions from about 1870-1910. Mark Twain coined the term in his 1873 novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today that satirized the era of social problems that were masked by a layer of thin, gold gilding. It’s a fascinating time in history, especially in the Thousand Islands.

All of my books are set during the Thousand Islands Gilded Age, when the wealthy came and scooped up the islands and built lavish summer homes, mansions, and castles. It was an era of economic growth. Since wages were higher than Europe, massive immigration drew about twenty million to the U.S. shores.

Unfortunately, it was also a time of unequal distribution of wealth where the rich got richer and the poor working class suffered. Many young women worked as servants until they married, and that’s what my stories are about—those nameless, faithful women who cooked and cleaned and served tables for the rich and famous. These “downstairs” women had fascinating stories to tell, and I plan to tell many of them.

During the Gilded Age, America led the world in innovation. A half-million patents were issued for new inventions including hundreds by Thomas Edison, Westinghouse, and others. Thanks to inventions such as delivery of electric power, the world became lighter, safer, more convenient and comfortable, and all around better.

So, this is why I write Thousand Islands Gilded Age stories. To share the rich heritage this era gave us and better understand what it was like.

MY REVIEW

A beautiful story of a young woman who finds herself on a journey where faith is presented to her. For a long time she has not believed in God. When she goes to Sister Island she finds peace, beauty and the beginning of feeling God’s love. Her ability as an artist is well described as the paintings come to life. Set against the backdrop of a lighthouse and the sea, you can feel the hope that springs forth. I love lighthouses and how they remind me of a hope and light that guides you to safety.

William has had health issues and is still hurt from his fiancée who left him when she couldn’t handle his illness. His deep faith is very prominent and I like how he shares it with Julia. Spending time together they start to grow closer. Will Julia find peace on the island?

This has been a great story that captures a faith journey where faith is discovered and letting go of the past and hope for a bright future.
