The day to open the centuries-old Dome gates and reintegrate genetically engineered people back into normal society has arrived. There’s one caveat—their powers must remain suppressed.

About the Author

With a name like S.D. Grimm, how could she be anything but a writer of fantasy and sci-fi with equal parts sparkle and darkle? Always the dreamer, she’s been sorted into Gryffindor, she checks wardrobes for secret worlds, and has a blue lightsaber. She is the author of several young adult titles spanning many speculative genres, and she works as a freelance editor and writing coach. Her office is anywhere she can curl up with her laptop and at least one dog.

More from S.D.

What makes a fantasy writer change lanes and enter the world of science fiction?

My story actually goes back to that famous phrase “never say never.” I have ALWAYS loved both genres equally. If the question is Star Wars or LOTR? X-Men or Harry Potter? Hunger Games or Vampire Diaries? My answer is going to be, Why not all of it? But I always said I’d never write sci-fi. The reason? I didn’t think I’d ever be able to pull it off.

That’s one of the fun things about being a writer though . . . you get these little glimmers of shiny story ideas that just won’t stop sparkling in your mind. And eventually you follow the spark, and well, the rest is history.

Beneath False Stars started like that for me. But because I still believed I’d never be able to write a good sci-fi, I’d just write it for fun. To create for creation’s sake. And it was fun! Having a project that existed as something no one would ever read gave me permission to try new things, stretch my storytelling in new and exciting ways. And after a long period of burnout, this story carried me back into the heart of why I write. It was exactly what I needed.

But that wasn’t all.

Remember, it was never my intention to actually share this book. But it became something that I was too excited about to NOT share. So I tested the waters. When several writer friends read it and told me it was their favorite of all my books to date, I knew it was something that was never meant to sit in a drawer. In a way that scared me.

So, I did what the main character in the book would have told me to do—I decided not to let my fears win. And I shared. And now it’s going to be in print! That only goes to show that when a project you’re passionate about pulls at your heartstrings for attention, listen. You don’t have to know that project’s future. Just revel in its present, and let yourself create. <3

MY REVIEW

Welcome to a world where division is very evident. The author develops a place where technology has reached every facet of life. One character wants to hack into a system but danger is very near at all times.  Ryleigh stood out to me because I could relate to what people call her flaws. She worries to the point of being obsessive, doesn’t trust others  and cringes at criticism and let’s not forget anxiety . She wants to prove to everyone that she is fierce and can succeed at nothing. Do you relate to any of these?

I laughed at some of the references like “ancient pen”  because  in this world pens are obsolete. That really got  my attention and it reminded me that we are not in Kansas anymore. I appreciate the author highlighting sign language in the story. Ryleigh’s brother depends on it to communicate even though it is not really used in this new world the author dropped us into. The author has taken us into a world where technology is powerful and those that are in control can be very dangerous if threatened.

When Ryleigh is able to hack into the system her and her brother race to the opening and slip in. Waiting  for them is a world where transportation  like slide boards are common. This reminded me of a very famous cartoon that I watched every time it came on. I wonder what it would be like to zoom around hovering above the ground. I know for sure my legs would appreciate the rest the board allows. Just think, no more walking but jetting across and feeling relaxed as you travel to your destinstion

Project Integration is now the upmost attention of Ryleigh. She is determined to get this project in place but faces the enemy along the way. I couldn’t believe how much I became engrossed in this book. With the creativity and life lessons the author captures the attention of science fiction fans.

What an exceptional story that illustrates forgiveness in a way that expresses true grace. As Ryleigh faces someone that she has never wanted to see again, the author shocks us with twists that keep readers on their toes. This is a great story with definite lessons in forgiveness, overcoming insecurity and treating each other without prejudice.

More from Vickie

Most of my writing career I’ve been an author of western historical fiction set in the late 1800’s, but a visit to Charleston and Savannah while on vacation, stirred up a desire to write in a different time period. I was born and raised in Oklahoma, a state that is only 118 years old. I was quickly enchanted by Charleston’s rich history and fell in love with the centuries-old homes and cobblestone streets.

While in Charleston, my husband and I toured an antebellum plantation called Drayton Hall, which was built in 1738. It’s located on the Ashley River about 15 miles northwest of Charleston. Touring the magnificent old home gave me lots of fodder for a new series set in South Carolina. For instance, did you know that ballrooms were often located on a third or fourth story because you could get better cross-breeze which made the temperature a bit cooler, and it was less likely that mosquitoes would plague the guests on the upper floors.

Secrets of the Heart  is set 22 years after Mutiny of the Heart, book 1 in my Windswept Brides series. When I sat down to begin writing Secrets of the Heart, the only thing I knew for certain was that I wanted to continue the story of the Reed family. I had thought the book would be mostly Jamie’s story, who was a young boy in the first book in the series, but the story took an expected turn. I ’ve always like forbidden love stories, where the hero and heroine seemed destined to be together, but everything is working against them. I had to add that to my story.

MY REVIEW

This is a tender and sweet story that illustrates how a relationship grows slowly but following God.  I sometimes don’t like stories about amnesia but this one was written with emotions that helped me care for the well being of Adam. We don’t know what secret he hides but there is definitely someone who wants to harm him.

The author gives us a peek into his life as snippets  of his memory start to return. I really liked how Hannah didn’t hesitate to nurse him back to health. She has such a caring heart and never felt scared around him. As they start to develop feelings, Hannah questions her future.

I really liked the mystery that Adam faces as men are determined to find  him. The author writes with creativity that makes readers become invested in finding out if Adam will remember his past. There is danger awaiting our main characters as they turn to God for direction. I was not disappointed by the ending and experiencing how God wants us to trust Him.

About the Author

Kay DiBianca is a former software developer and IT manager who retired to a life of mystery. She’s the award-winning author of six mystery novels. Her books have been honored with numerous awards including an Illumination Award, Eric Hoffer Awards, a Reader Views Award, a Readers’ Favorite Award, and a Memphis Libraries Richard Wright Literary Award.

An avid runner, Kay can often be found at a local track, on her treadmill, or at a park near her home. Kay and her husband, Frank, live, run, and write in Memphis, TN.

More from Kay

My third mystery novel, Time After Tyme, featured two young secondary characters, Reen and Joanie, who were so popular, I was encouraged to give them their own series. I had been thinking of doing a middle grade novel for a while, so I began to put together thoughts for a Reen & Joanie Detective Agency series.

At about that same time, my husband and I made several trips to Manhattan for health reasons. (Everything is fine now.) During those trips, we used our spare time to explore the museums and famous places in the city, and that became the setting for Knights in Manhattan.

While writing the book, I had great fun seeing the city through the eyes of the two youngsters as they chased criminals in and around some of New York’s most famous landmarks. This is the second book in the Reen & Joanie Detective Agency series, and I’m excited to see where the girls will travel in the upcoming books.

MY REVIEW

A fun adventure is waiting for all  in this story. I enjoyed all the excitement that Reen and Joanie have when they travel to the big city. The beginning was pretty funny on the airplane. It is not easy to tell a young child to stay still on a plane. A clue is found in the bathroom that starts an exciting mystery for our young detectives.

The characters in the story are inquisitive and eager to solve the mystery. The author gives readers clues to help follow the steps as Reen and Joanie take on their next case. Being  in New York can be overwhelming but these kids are ready to take on whatever awaits them. I liked the faith element in the story as well as how the author delivers a map so to speak that leads our two young detectives into a few laughs, lessons that are valuable for everyone and working together.

About the Book

Book: A Hidden Hope

Genre: Amish Fiction

Release Date: October 7, 2025

Supervising two newly minted medical residents might be the toughest challenge Ruth “Dok” Stoltzfus has ever faced. Wren Baker, sharp and ambitious, graduated at the top of medical school with a hidden agenda in tow. Charlie King, at the bottom of the class, is determined to succeed–though Dok isn’t convinced he’s got what it takes. Then there’s traveling nurse Evie Miller, whose quiet love for Charlie doesn’t go unnoticed, especially by Wren.

Boarding at Windmill Farm, the trio struggles to balance modern medicine with plain living. Soon the stage is set in the small Amish community of Stoney Ridge for plenty of professional and personal complications.

More from Suzanne

The Kitchen Garden by Suzanne Woods Fisher

“Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow.” Amish proverb

Whenever I visit my Amish friends, I always make a point of wandering out to their vegetable gardens to see what’s growing. Their gardens, usually not far from the kitchen, are bigger than most people’s backyards. Gardens, for the Amish, are a family affair. Husbands help their wives ready the soil and add the homebrewed fertilizer (ahem, manure), children help their moms plant, weed, and harvest.

Like so many parts of the Plain life, their value of the home garden—for the sake of nutrition, for sustenance, for well-being—is a wonderful example to those of us who weren’t farm-raised. They’ve been living a sustainable life filled with fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables for over four hundred years. The rest of us are just catching on.

One Amish mom told me a story about her daughter, the youngest of seven. “This girl was a born worrier. Whenever she started on her worry loop, I would send her out to weed in the garden. When she came back in, her worries were gone. There’s just something about weeding that helps a soul settle down.”

I could expand that thought a little further. There’s just something about gardening that helps a soul settle down.

So, it’s late on Saturday and I just wrapped up a very long week. I spoke at three book events and finished the first draft (the drafty-draft) of a novel. I can’t stop thinking about the novel. Is it a mess? As tired as I am, tonight I don’t think I’ve got one more word in me—not to speak, not to write. I’m spent! Done. My husband is out for the evening, so I had a few hours alone at home to relax.

What did I do?

I planted in my garden: lettuce and radishes and carrots. As I dug in the spongy soil, I could feel my soul settle. Worry and exhaustion slipped away as I scattered seeds into furrows. Little by little, that wonderful God-given sense of re-creation returned. Tomorrow, I would write again. Time spent in my little garden does that for me. It renews me and gives me a hope for the future.

Or, at the very least, a good salad.

Overnight Blueberry French Toast

On a sunny July morning, we were served this breakfast dish at an Amish friend’s home and my husband couldn’t stop talking about it. You might be shocked at the amount of eggs, but don’t skimp! It’s worth every bite.

12 slices bread cut in 1” cubes

8 oz. cream cheese cut in ¾” cubes

1 ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries

12 eggs

1/3 cup maple syrup

2 cups milk

Place half the bread cubes in a 9×13 baking dish. Top with cream cheese blueberries and the remaining bread. Beat eggs, syrup and milk and pour evenly over bread.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until well done.

MY REVIEW

This book was very hard to put down. I became so invested in the characters that I found myself shutting everything else out. The author has a special gift of illustrating struggles that  we can all relate to. I could easily relate to being a people pleaser like Evie. She strives to help others even if they seem to be taking advantage of her. I loved her gentle spirit and compassion for others. She has a hard time saying  no to people as her insecurity starts to overcome her.

Ruth also known as ‘Dok” is overwhelmed with patients. She needs help but when she finds  herself with two new doctors she can’t quite trust them. Dok doesn’t  want to let go of her responsibilities and finds reasons not to  be a  mentor to the new doctors ready and eager to learn.  She is very protective of her Amish patients who are not comfortable with the English doctors.

I liked how the story focuses on postpartum depression that women suffer with. It is usually not talked about but many women have gone through it. I appreciate the author highlighting this subject and giving thoughtful ways to address it. The story also talks about women needing to feel more valued. It is important to know that we are all valued and wanted. When we face difficult situations, turn to God for direction.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
