More from Cathy

From Isolated to Influence

“He’s not listening,” Cathy fumed, as the civic leader towered over her. She went home and “plopped open” her Bible.

There’s got to be something here about people who don’t listen. She found over 40 ways Jesus communicated.

Plus, she gained new respect for one of the most fascinating women in scripture. Jesus, the Master Communicator, engaged the woman at the well in just one conversation. She immediately zipped from lonely to leadership. We can, too!

MY REVIEW

How many of us have heard someone say to you, “We need to talk.” Oh my I know this isn’t going to be good if it is my spouse saying that. I am already thinking of ways to defend myself even though I have no idea what the conversation is going to be about. What if instead it was a conversation that would improve our relationship? Many of us don’t like confrontation and would rather say nothing. In this book I found great ideas of communicating with others in a gentle spirit.

I’m not one to hold back how I feel about what things , which at times was very hurtful to who I was speaking with.  But there are times when I’m in a room full of people that I feel all alone. The simple reason is that I don’t want to be rejected by anyone, so I say nothing, I wonder how many friends I could have had if I had just had faith? We sometimes don’t want to have difficult conversations with others because it is a hard subject to talk about. “If we want to be influential in our relationships, we do this with a spirit of Love.”

The author draws on the story about the woman at the well and explores how conversations can be started and flourish. The woman was a bit timid as she approached the well. After all, no one liked her and certainly didn’t want to talk to her. But one person did and his name was Jesus. What a glorious moment that must have been to have Jesus talk to the woman who others avoided. That one moment in  time changed how the woman felt about herself. Can you remember a time when you were feeling down and someone came to you and encouraged you? Don’t miss your chance to speak to someone who may be hurting. Reach out to those who are bullied and rejected. Start conversations that open doors to sharing the Word with others.

I liked the different examples from the Bible as well as personal accounts the author used  to  shows different ways to communicate. One thing I noticed was the importance of prayer. It is our way to communicate to God. Have we forgotten to pray before speaking with someone about a problem? Do we invite Him into our conversations? We need to be able to speak truth without being afraid. How we approach it is important. Come with a gentle spirit and allow God to give you words of wisdom as you talk through any problems.

I will say that at times the author confused me, it seemed like some chapters ran together and there was no real subject that stood out. The author rushed through some keys points and at other times stayed on a subject too long. Perhaps the book could use a bit more direction in some areas with more precise follow through with thoughts and examples. Even though this book was not my favorite I do think there are a few helpful insights.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
