CHRISTMAS HIDEOUT by SUSAN SLEEMAN
Nicole is in big danger when her ex- boyfriend starts stalking her. The author delivers a fast pace story with action that keeps up till the end. The beginning of the book starts with a bone chilling example of how far the ex-boyfriend will go. I would be running as fast as I could to get away from this crazy person.
Nicole has to think fast and her character is smart and determined. I loved how she bumps into Matt. If you have to hide out, being in Matt's place is where you should go. I just love his family and how welcome they are to Nicole and her daughter. The story is intense and I couldn't wait to read more about Matt and his family.
The author delivers another story rich in intrigue that had me on the edge of my seat. It sure is hard to figure out who to trust and Nicole is so determined to go back home and face danger alone. Her faith wavers at times which shows how we can doubt God when we are
in danger.
Matt is not sure Nicole is telling him the whole truth either and that causes friction between the two. It is a great story about trust and forgiveness. I can't forget to mention Nicole's daughter. If there ever was an adorable character, Emile is it. She had Matt and his family wrapped around her finger. There is no way Matt was going to let anything happen to Nicole and Emile. Get ready for an adventure with surprises and an ending with a twist.

A SPARKLE OF SILVER by LIZ JOHNSON
This is a wonderful romantic story that takes us between present day and slips back to 1929. I'm not sure sure which story make me swoon more, the present or the past. Millie is a delightful character who is barely making ends meet. She has a dear grandmother she is trying keep in a facility but the bills are piling up. It is not easy to watch a loved one slowly slip away in their mind. I wanted to go take Millie's hand and tell her everything would get better.
The details about the chateau that Millie works at is fascinating. I would love to explore every room there and perhaps stay in the library forever. Grandma Joy tells a story one day that surprises Millie. It is hard to tell if Grandma Joy is remembering something or just talking silly. If the story is true, there could be a big treasure waiting for Millie to find.
Ben enters the picture when he finds Millie sneaking around the chateau. What can she do to convince him to let her continue her search? I loved how the story bounces back and forth between time periods with seamless energy. The author has captured the true depiction of romance with a magical story. It flows with grace and I loved the added mystery of the diary. The words spoken in there are poetic, lovely and definitely a person deeply in love. The slow simmer of Millie and Ben's attraction to each other is movie worthy. They pretend they don't care, yet their eyes tell a different story. And what of the diary which holds secrets that could change lives? The race is on to discover what or if there is a treasure when others get wind of the rumor.
The story is one that slowly grabs at your emotions and takes you on a journey of discovering the inner workings of a lost love, the hope of a better future, secrets long thought to be buried and a love story that only a very gifted author can write. The kiss that I have been waiting to read about just about knocked me off my feet. It was soft, sweet, electrical between two people, and "suddenly our hearts were beating at the same tempo, racing faster than mine ever had before. " I won't say who the kiss was from, but for me I waited patiently for that moment in the story that would be worthy of "the kiss felt round the world." The book is everything you want in a story with romance, mystery and an ending that will satisfy all romantics. The author has surpassed my expectations and now has a huge fan. The ending is spectacular with intense drama and sadness that overwhelms me. The lesson in forgiveness and trust told by the characters will be one I will always remember.
" You have made me see a love I could not have imagined possible."

This is one fast paced hard hitting story that I couldn't put down. The author has an amazing gift of getting readers attention with a high profile case that brings out the underbelly of criminals. I really liked Kerry. She is a very strong willed woman that also has a soft spot for children, Her profession as a teacher is admirable and I loved how much she loved her job. Kerry has a very close knit family who is well represented in crime fighting. I can't imagine what it would be like to have siblings who were in the CIA, FBI and other law enforcement organizations
The story centers around the kidnapping of Kerry and revenge that someone in her brother's life is trying to succeed at. I have to say she is one gutsy woman. Luke has been asked by her brother to rescue her and this is really the meat of the story. Luke goes one step further and offers to protect her when she is in danger over and over again. There is an element of faith in the story that I found subtle but very well placed as Luke questions if he still believes in God. He is a private person with some deep rooted bitterness he needs to deal with.
The book is one that you will find is filled with twists and maybe a relationship developing if two people will admit their attraction to each other. Luke has a few surprises up his sleeve to keep Kerry safe. The mind games the perpetrator plays is nothing short of devious. I was even getting chills as I read how dangerous this man was becoming. The author is becoming one of my favorite suspense writers and I can't seem to put her books down until I read every chapter. i loved getting to know Kerry and Luke better. She is able to deliver a chilling, intense story with emphasis on faith, trust forgiveness and commitment.

About the Book
Book Title: Dare to Dream Again
Author: Alana Terry
Genre: Christian Romance
Release date: May 8, 2018
Will love bloom just as sweet the second time around?
Losing her husband has taught Gloria more than anything else how to rely on God.
His grace alone gave her the strength to raise her children — a sweet angel with cerebral palsy as well as a daughter who wants nothing more than to serve God as a missionary on foreign soil.
Gloria couldn’t be prouder of her girls, but a future without them both by her side sounds empty and hollow.
When God thrusts a godly man like Derek into her path, Gloria isn’t sure she’s ready to jump headfirst into a relationship.
But maybe God’s giving her the chance for a happily ever after … a second time around.
About the Author
Alana is a pastor’s wife, homeschooling mom, self-diagnosed chicken lady, and Christian suspense author. Her novels have won awards from Women of Faith, Book Club Network, Grace Awards, Readers’ Favorite, and more. Alana’s passion for social justice, human rights, and religious freedom shines through her writing, and her books are known for raising tough questions without preaching. She and her family live in rural Alaska where the northern lights in the winter and midnight sun in the summer make hauling water, surviving the annual mosquito apocalypse, and cleaning goat stalls in negative forty degrees worth every second.
Guest Post from Alana
Hey everyone! Fall is here. Our family had a great summer. Everything in Alaska is gorgeous in the summertime. One of my favorite childhood memories that my husband and I have introduced our kids to is Vacation Bible School (VBS). With so many volunteers giving of their time to build relationships with each other and the kids who attend, it’s a week filled with so many great Jesus moments. I thought it would be fun to write a book about VBS. Dare to Dream Again is about two VBS volunteers who not only become friends, but just may dare to fall in love.
The author has the ability to write a story that digs down deep into your soul. She is able to compel your sense of emotions and bring them to the surface to feel what each character is feeling. This story is not just about a woman finding love again, but about finding herself. Gloria is one of those rare people who have the gift of compassion. She demonstrates it through the care of her daughter with cerebral palsey with love, patience and devotion. I never once heard her complain or say poor me. I loved Gloria so much that I wanted more of her story. Her love for her husband was undeniable.
I loved reading about VBS and the author displays a very accurate account of what goes on at one. The children are excited to be there and they are hungry for attention. There is a very special young boy who attends that stole my heart. This child wanted to know who Jesus was so bad that he endured the abuse of his father just to be there. I wanted to hug him and shout out to the world that Jesus has his back. I appreciate the openness about abuse in the story. having taught VBS many years I have encountered parents who were offended that we talked about Jesus. I never backed down and I admired how calm Gloria was in a similar situation.
The other main character in the story is Derek. That man is truly amazing. He is humble, giving and has integrity pouring through his veins. I loved how the relationship between him and Gloria was not rushed. One thing that really stuck out to me was the mention that Gloria realized she might have idolized her husband. That revelation changed her outlook on so many things. Has God brought these two together ? Will Gloria be able to let go of her husband's memory and allow a new man into her life?
There are a few things I have to say about the book that may seem picky to others. I don't like that the author rushed the ending . The other thing that really bothered me was the over use of the word crass. After awhile I cringed every time I saw it. There are so many other words that could have been used in place of crass and I wished the author had done that. I will say that this author is one of my favorites and I always come away with a sense of a deeper relationship with God each time I read her books. I am looking forward to the next book that continues the story and hope to get some closure on questions that the story didn't answer.

Book Title: the Vintage Wren Volume 1

Genre: Christian / Fiction / General / Romance
Release date: May 25, 2016 (still in progress)

The Vintage Wren is a serial novel released in several chapter episodes. Volume One contains the first four and a half episodes in one full-length novel.
Cassie Wren. Legal assistant. Convenience queen. Thrifter extraordinaire. If there was a “green police” she’d be a fugitive from eco-friendly justice.
But when a friend’s teasing feels like a challenge, Cassie accepts it. The result? One year. Twelve months. Fifty-two weeks. Three hundred sixty-five days–of green.
It seemed simple enough. Cut back on paper plates, plastic forks, and straws. Easy peasy. But when her competitive side wars against her desire for convenience, Cassie finds it’s not so easy to be “eco-friendly” and “Cassie- friendly.”
January Shopping for Cassie’s annual New Year’s Eve party sparks an innocent comment that Cassie can’t forget. So, during their New Year’s Day goal planning session, Cassie’s friends tease her about her lack of eco-consciousness, and Cassie determines to change one new thing in favor of the planet every week. For a year. Even if it kills her.
She’s confident it will.
Cassie’s first month includes eradicating the extraneous paper, glass, plastic, and metal from her life. However, she finds that it’s not quite as easy as she thought. Paper and plastic cover everything manufactured or packaged–even water, produce, and restaurant food! Glass is great, but you can only have so many “reusable jars,” and metal reduction means her hair may end up a nightmare of uncontrollable frizzies!
She doesn’t even want to talk about her water reduction plans.
But it’s not all been bad. She’s saved a lot of money, has prospects for a new business, her impromptu blog is gaining traffic, and she even has a new boyfriend. Add to that, a few great friends who keep her going when things get rough, and the realization that there are only eleven months to go, and Cassie just might make it.
Now only if her car would cooperate and make it, too!

How Writing about Cassie’s Eco-Challenge Has Changed My Way of Living
I didn’t think it through—not really. I mean, how hard could it be? All I had to do is give Cassie my own reactions to things like giving up straws and having to use tote bags at the grocery store. I just needed 52 simple things she could change in her life—one new one for each episode.
Piece of cake.
I should have known better. I don’t do things halfway when I get into them. Yes, I’ve discovered that Cassie is more like me in some ways than I ever imagined. And as I’ve researched things for her to freak out about, I’ve done a bit of freaking out myself. Certain questions and thoughts won’t go away.
For instance, in 2017 1.26 BILLION dollars were spent on plush toys. Just plush toys. Stuffed animals. And I don’t know how many weren’t purchased. Those are just the ones that were. That’s… a LOT of stuffed toys. If each toy cost 20 dollars (and we all know most are half that or less these days), that’s 63 million of those toys purchased and brought home.
In one year.
Shampoo, conditioner, and laundry soap bottles. Not sure why this one bothers me as much as it does. I think, actually, it’s the huge amount of water as much as it is all the plastic.
Look, we no longer have eight females in our house. But we do still have four there at all times—five on breaks. That’s a lot of shampoo bottles every year. A big portion of both laundry soap, shampoo, and conditioner is… water. We pay for a big bottle (lots of plastic and water) and to ship that to us—either because we had to have it shipped to a store for us to buy it or we had to have it shipped to our house.
I am paying extra for water that I could add myself at a fraction of the cost.
And the things go on and on. The lake that almost disappeared in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan because of how much water it takes to grow and process cotton.
See, the thing is, I’m not a green nut.
I don’t think it’s as easy to “destroy the planet” as we like to say. I do think, much like we do with our bodies and such, that we can reduce the quality of the world around us, however.
And while I’ll never jump on Cassie’s bandwagon—certainly not for life, I have made a few changes in how I do things. And as time goes on, I find myself making even more.
Like what, you ask?
I’ll tell you.
Here are three small ways I’ve changed how we do things in our house.
- I started buying Dropps. They’re an automatically-shipped laundry pod. Each one is tiny—just a little smaller than the average “pod” and a whole lot cheaper. Also, there are no extra dyes or other things that are supposed to be bad for you and the planet.
I don’t really care about that. I just care that they work. And they do. And they’re cheaper than my Tide. 🙂
- I got a shampoo bar for my birthday. I thought it would be like washing with regular soap—especially after I started rinsing my hair! It freaked me out. One idea down the drain… I thought.
But no, after the second or third use, it still felt weird while wet, but it dried beautifully, and I didn’t need to use additional conditioner. It’s in the bar or something. I even tried the old way again to compare after-shower tangles. Identical.
- Dryer balls. Those felted wool balls really do work! A wonderful reader of mine sent me some, and it made my day! My youngest daughter and I are now trying to work with felted sweaters to try to turn them into dryer balls—or maybe even into sheets! (although, I think the balls bouncing around also kind of pound the clothes into submission or something. “Sheets” might not work, but I’m tempted to try it!
Look, you’ll never find me standing in front of a case in a mini-mart, freaking out because I want a Coke and can’t justify it. That’s not going to happen. But if I can choose a reasonable alternative to what I already do, well… it’s time to consider that.
There you have it. Three ways my life has changed since writing Cassie’s crazy story.
Cassie is a wonderful character and I laughed so much my side hurt. We all at some point said we were going to change our habits. Of course we want to save the environment and do our part. Cassie thinks about those things as she rushes off to get all these easy to throw away plastic and paper goods for a party.
Cassie is about to have a close encounter of the "eco-friendly" world in three, two, one. What's a person to do when you are challenged to change your habits? Oh Cassie my dear you are in for a bumpy ride. Who knew there was so much unnecessary things we use everyday ? The shenanigans Cassie finds herself in is hysterical. I am no expert and I would be right there with her as my laundry came out all twisted up. Why did her laundry get messed up you ask? Well you must read the story to find out Cassie's lessons in what is disposable and what isn't. Her friends are a hoot and I think I am partial to Joel.
I love that this is set up in a series that you can sign up for to follow Cassie on her adventure. We are just beginning in January and already Cassie is up to her eyeballs in what to do. I learned how much I waste buying paper plates and plastic cups. Who wants to take the time to wash the dishes? I do now that I have read this story. I can't believe the waste of money I spend on convenient products.
I love the banter between Cassie and her mother. I'm chuckling now as I remember their talks. I've wondered what my kids were thinking with their ideas. I always got the eye roll from one of them when my own ideas were shut down. I loved how the author had Cassie start a blog so others could follow her adventure. The book is funny, helpful and filled with nuggets of wisdom.
I can't end my review without quoting some wonderful insights the author wrote.
1. "If you don't have something nice to say....." What a great reminder that we may not agree what others do, but we don't need to insult them with our opinions
2. "I'm going to make mistakes. I just need to learn from them." Stop beating yourself up all the time. We learn from our mistakes.
3." We get so caught up in things that we miss the important stuff-like calling our parents and inviting them out to dinner, or bringing dinner to them. "
4. "Go out and be You. Just lean on your greatest support group Leader when you do it. Lean on Jesus."
I can't wait to read the next installment of this story. Cassie has become my all time favorite character. She is sassy, goes overboard at times, is hard on herself, but she has the biggest heart ever. I loved the tips the author provided and I am thinking of putting some to use.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Guest Post from Linda
Certain ancestors and their experiences appear in my stories. There’s bit of my grandmother and a strong dash of my mother in one character. My father’s sterling qualities appear in another. And there’s a low-down family reprobate in another. Don’t forget cotton planting, hoeing, and harvest time. The glorious aroma of fresh-picked cotton and the nothing-in-the-world-like-it odor from the pig pen. A sewing machine whirring. The clink of a milk pail. A cow hollering to be milked. Summer’s sun on my face, the hearty South Texas wind in my hair, and the comfort of backing up to a wall heater on a cold winter morning. All find their way into the plot lines.
In my family’s history, my own life, and the kaleidoscope of lives in my stories, Jesus appears as the golden thread linking the past to the present and beyond. He turns an ordinary morning into a hint of the “Sweet By & By.” He adds the delicate aroma of the Rose of Sharon to the sultry stillness before a summer storm. And He wraps the bitterness of grief and failure in the richness of His incomparable grace. The Mending of Lillian Cathleen is one of those tales that reach beyond the ordinary to the extraordinary because of Jesus.
Lily’s story captures some of the heartache of domestic abuse, but it packs a powerfully joyous punch at the end. I thought I’d add a strong dash of sweet to this post with a recipe that appears in The Calling of Ella McFarland (which is re-releasing in October 2018). Mama’s (or Papa’s) Nectar of Heaven was a treat my mother enjoyed as a child. She set the same yummy delicacy before her kids, and I, of course, have done the same. Here ’tis, ya’ll, from Texas with sweet, sweet love.
The book took a while for me to get into it. I don't know if there were a lot of characters at the beginning or if the author was trying to give us background information too quickly. I was determined that I was going to see this book through to the end and I am so glad I did.
Lily has had a horrendous childhood and is determined to make the man who caused so much pain to her family pay for his torture. When she is able to escape from his clutches she is taken in by a wonderful woman. That is when her life became meaning to her. Her father is one nasty human being and I cringed every time I saw his name, read what he did or said a word. The author portrays him with accuracy and what he does will have readers feel anger and disgust . Lily has scars so deep that she isn't sure she is worthy of anyone's love. Her despair is overwhelming at times. The story is filled with raw emotions and shares a time when women were little more than slaves or nobody's.
The day Lily leaves the courthouse I could feel fire in her eyes. Her father is evil and a woman's word didn't mean much in the eyes of the court in 1914. I was shocked that an eye witness to a crime was dismissed simply because she was a woman. That day in court defined Lilly's destiny and how God was able to heal her scars.
I don't want to give too much away but just enough so readers will not miss out on one of the best historical books I've read about prostitution and child abuse. In the 1900s times were hard as families tried to survive. They worked hard and were thankful for what they had. Lilly's mom was someone who devoted her life to her children and God. She would do anything to keep her children safe. I loved how the author showed how much Lilly's mother had sacrificed to keep her children as safe as possible.
Lilly travels to find where her father has run off to and hopefully make him pay for what he has done. I never expected the story to take a turn like it did. We never know how someone's life is when they go home at night. Lilly stumbles upon a deplorable child traffic ring that will hit close to home. The people involved were horrible, unfeeling and money hungry. Lilly has been asked to speak at women's events to share her childhood. I know all too well how difficult it is to speak about your past in front of people. Thoughts of will they judge me runs through your mind. Will they blame me for what happened? Do they look at me as damaged goods? I am thankful that the author wrote a book that depicts the horrors of child abuse and human traffic among young women and girls.
The ending was so emotional I cried until the end. God does care about each one of us. He sees our scars and wraps us in his arms to heal them. It was important in 1914 to stand up and be heard as a woman and that still stands today. This is one story that will linger with me forever. It reminds me that I am a survivor and just like Lilly, I realize that God was right there beside me through everything. Lilly and others like her will have to learn how to forgive, know that they are beautiful in God's eyes and loved unconditionally.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
