Book: Justice Delayed

Author: Sarah Hamaker

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release date: May 15, 2024

Journalist Brogan Gilmore had been a rising star when an unethical shortcut on a story leads to his fall from grace. A chance encounter with convicted murderer Melender Harman a few months after her release from prison provides Brogan with a chance for career redemption—if he can land an interview with her.

After serving her 17-year sentence, Melender has one objective: To uncover the truth about what happened to her cousin the night the toddler disappeared. When Brogan pursues her for an exclusive story, she reluctantly agrees if he’ll help her reexamine the original investigation into Jesse’s presumed kidnapping and murder.

While re-investigating the case, Brogan struggles to keep his objectivity as he begins to believe Melender is innocent of the crime—and starts to envision a possible future together. Then a shocking discovery throws their relationship—and investigation—into turmoil.

More from Sarah

When Stories Teach Us Valuable Lessons

As a rather shy child, books became both my friends and teachers. While I had a few close friends, I spent hours of my childhood and teen years reading a plethora of books. I visited far away places and long ago times. I met famous people and viewed historical events. I solved my share of mysteries and wept with the characters over losses. I fell in love with heroes and rooted for heroines to save the day.

Researchers have discovered that literary fiction can improve your capacity to understand what others are thinking and feeling. Literary fiction also teaches us about social behavior, including how to view the world through other people’s eyes. In other words, reading fiction helps us develop empathy as well as allows us to experience the ups and downs of someone else’s life and thus become more able to handle similar situations in our own lives.

While I didn’t set out to write Justice Delayed with this research in mind, early reviews of the book have touched on that theme. For example, one reader said, “One of my favorite quotes is when [Melender, my heroine] defends her action of true forgiveness to [Brogan, my hero], ‘It was for my good and His eternal glory that I went to prison for a crime I didn’t commit. That didn’t mean I gave up trying to find justice in this world-it meant I didn’t despair when justice didn’t come.’ Wow! What a lesson in forgiveness and letting go of bitterness which in turn provided a peace that cannot be matched. She never allowed bitterness to take hold of her heart.”

Another reviewer said this: “Greed, politics and outright evil are a part of story, but the truth and goodness shine through it all as the walls start crumbling down, and you learn what truly happened that night. This was one of the best inspirational suspense books that I have read in quite some time. It left an impression on me, even if the message came from a fictional character.”

And another pointed this out: “Not only did Melender teach those around her how to forgive, but Melender taught me that lesson at well.”

While I had written Justice Delayed five years ago, I recently finished reading the late Tim Keller’s last book, Forgive, which touched on themes I explore in my book. Today, we so often ignore forgiveness as being too hard, too messy to offer and much too difficult to receive. Melender’s story is one example of how you can extend forgiveness even when it’s not been requested and to live a life of forgiveness in extremely arduous circumstances. Keller’s book has challenged me in many ways to forgive more without strings attached.

What have you learned from a book recently?

MY REVIEW

The beginning of the story sent shivers down my spine. The murder of a child is not easy to read about. When the author introduces Melender  I had mixed feelings at first. Being convicted of the murder did raise questions for me. Her life behind bars must have been pure torture. It has been said that if you have been convicted of killing a child, you probably need to watch your back in prison at all times.

Melender is now trying to put the pieces back together of her life while determined to prove her innocence. I started to see a softer and vulnerable side to Melender as she spent every day working hard and never giving up. Her faith is what has gotten her through  all those years behind bars. Without her sweet great grandmother I don’t think she would be as strong as she is.

Brogan  sure has messed up his career as a journalist. Now that he has been given a second chance he intends to be honest and above board with his writing. His encounter with Melender opens the door for them both to learn to trust and see justice served. The author does a good  job of slowly building their relationship while keeping  the focus on clearing Melender’s name. With twists, secrets and danger  the author had me glued to the book. Oh I had my suspicions about who was guilty, but I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next in this edge of your seat story.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from EV

Muldoon’s Misfortunes is Book 1 in Those Resilient Muldoons historical fiction series.

In Ireland’s history, there was a time when it was wild, fraught with peril, and without knowledge of God Almighty. Then came St. Patrick, a real man, determined to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to that pagan island. The transformation of that country from the spiritual darkness it worshiped was phenomenal. Yet ancient superstitions remain.

Certain aspects of my great-grandfather’s life in the 1800s inspired my Irish main character, Mick Muldoon. Mick’s faith is a traditional type and a profound piece that holds together Irish communities. He often secretly doubts God cares anything about him. He could be invisible for all the attention He pays to Mick’s prayers. But God, being who He is, won’t allow that misconception forever. Mick encounters God’s unexpected presence several times without recognizing it. God persists in pursuing him.

When we’re brokenhearted, we can easily miss the signs of His presence. We may grapple with our beliefs or more intimacy with God in the modern world as well. Do we believe our God can’t see us, or hear our prayers, or that He struggles with drawing close to us because we’re unworthy and He is holy? Do we make choices because of our misbeliefs that can unbalance the God ordained, spiritual strength triangle of faith, hope and love?

Mick’s faith weakens further with his disappointments and influences of the wild and lawless lands during the Gilded Age. He sets damaging things into motion that he could’ve avoided. He’s glad to be finally free of the religious culture of Ireland and living like his chums, and what’s wrong with that?

Because he believes God didn’t pay any attention to him, he doesn’t expect any consequences. He’s in control of his own life now. The results of his choices bring him face to face with his choices, and a holy God He thought ignored him, and the blessings He bestows despite Mick’s misbeliefs.

I hope readers will find more faith in a loving God from Mick’s story as well.

MY REVIEW

Be prepared for a story that exposes the hardships of a man who seems to think Mister Death follows him everywhere. The book is not an easy read with so many tragedies happening. As a young boy Mick found life in Ireland unbearable. Traveling by ship with his two sisters they all hope for a better life. The conditions they endured on the ship were beyond horrific. When a loss happens, Mick once again sees Mister Death.

We fast forward to when Mick and his sister finally land in America.  They  hope for better life. I was shocked at the work his sister took. It was so sad to see how her insecurity led her to a way of life that others shun. Mick on the other hand has his own problems trying to find work. His biggest crutch that keeps him trapped in misery is his drinking. Whiskey has made him a prisoner to the bottle.

Throughout his life Mick  experiences the death of wives and children. I wondered at times if he would ever turn to God and learn to trust Him. The author illustrates how we can easily be deceived by the enemy. Mick believes that all the bad in his life is because he deserves it. He looks around every  corner waiting for Mister Death  to snatch another piece of happiness from him.

The story is honest, transparent and seeks to show how the enemy can trick us into  thinking there is no hope. Mick’s journey is hard but the lesson he finds will change him forever. It is a great reminder that even though we feel like we can’t survive our trials , God is there to rescue us. If you are looking for a story that brings beauty from ashes, this book is for you.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Annie

My passion and joy are found in helping people better understand the Bible, in bite-sized Truths. It was a clear calling from the Lord to write Astounding Truths of the Bible because I am well acquainted with my reader. I wrote to the gal who is not familiar with the Bible, but has a desire to understand God and His plan for His people.
At 28 years old, God redirected my path in a beautiful way. I was a new mom, home with a baby and found myself with some extra time on my hands due to the fact that I had a disciplined little girl who decided on a regular nap schedule. While little Lucy slept, I began devouring the Bible. I was so impressed that one book could include such amazing wisdom for life. I had never read the Bible before that time. That was 16 years ago, and since then the Lord has allowed me to use my gifting and talents to help explain the Bible using humor, quirky personal anecdotes, and my love of wordplay to help illustrate the teachings of God and His character.

MY REVIEW

Each chapter is based on people from the Bible, personal stories and scriptures that help readers understand the Bible better. I did like a lot  of the chapters and appreciate the authors insight.

It was interesting to see how the author interpreted different scriptures and stories. I never thought of God as being a matchmaker but I see how He could be one. God loves each of us and never plays favorites. “When God is the matchmaker, His perfect plan will be revealed.” In the Bible some  suffered loss but He did give joy back to them like Ruth who He gave  hope and joy.

The book is filled with many helpful thoughts on different subjects. It is easy to read and helps those who struggle trying to understand certain stories or scriptures. I enjoyed reading through the book and seeing how God  is always there with open arms.

More from Susan

A Character Interview with Libby, the heroine in Libby’s Lighthouse.

Good day, Libby! Thank you for taking the time to sit down with me. Could you please share a little about yourself?

Good day to you as well! My real name is Elizabeth Eliza, but I’ve always gone by Libby. I’m twenty years old, born on February 2, 1874. I must say, my journey through life has been quite an interesting one so far.

I hear you’ve been raised as a proper upper-class woman. Could you elaborate on that?

Certainly! My mother was well-educated and came from an upper-class background. She passed on her knowledge to me, teaching me etiquette, manners, and all the skills expected of a lady in society. I’ve learned to sew my own clothes, play the piano, and entertain guests with grace. But I haven’t always been ladylike, and that vexed my mother something fierce.

Your desire for family and a sense of belonging is quite strong. Can you tell me more about that?

Above all else, I long for a sense of family and belonging. Before my mother died, she revealed to me a terrible secret. I’ve kept this knowledge a secret from my father, as I’m unsure of how he would react. That uncertainty, combined with my fear of always being alone, fuels my desire for a family of my own.

How has your faith has been shaken after learning about your true heritage?

The secret has shaken the foundation of what I believed to be true about myself and my identity. It made me question my place in the world and my connection to my family. It’s been a struggle to reconcile this new information with my faith, but I’m working through it, hoping to find a sense of peace and acceptance.

Can you share more about your love for poetry and playing the piano.?

Oh, how I adore poetry and music! Poetry has a way of touching my heart, making me laugh or cry, and connecting me to the deepest emotions. I’ve memorized many beautiful poems over the years, and they bring me great joy to recite and share. As for the piano, it’s as if my fingers dance across the keys, expressing emotions that words alone cannot convey. It’s a form of artistic expression that brings me immense fulfillment.

Thanks for stopping by, Libby. It was great getting to know you!

MY REVIEW

This story has been filled with many tears shed from me as I walked beside Libby. Her adventure begins with a simple life as she helps the family with the lighthouse. I loved learning how a lighthouse is a beacon of light for  those who are lost. I started collecting lighthouses a long time ago. Each one is a treasure and it brings hope to me in my daily life.

I could go on and on about the characters because they brought me to a place where forgiveness was illustrated so beautifully. When I found out the secret Libby had been keeping, I wanted to give  her a hug and remind her that “God has a plan for her life.” Her sweet spirit was evident as she encountered trials that strengthened her.

This story is not only about a beautiful relationship between Libby and Owen but reconciliation between strained family members. Throughout the story a beautiful thread of faith was in every  scene. Owen became such a great character as he finds his way to remembering his past. I love that he didn’t show bitterness towards his father but reached out to him with honor and unconditional love.

I recommend this story to everyone who wants to experience what true forgiveness means and how the past can be healing. The author leaves me with a hunger to walk in compassion and truth everyday.
