About the Terri

They have one adult daughter, who lives in Chicago with her husband and son. Terri was one of the managing editors of the bestselling Tree of Life Version of the Holy Scriptures.

More from Terri

My grandson, DJ, loves to read, but there is a lack of inspirational and clean books with Black protagonists. DJ loves fantasy and mysteries, and as his safta (grandmother), I wanted a book that gives even more, a sense of legacy with a theme of looking past the exterior to the value underneath.

When the strange, awkward R.B. offers to pray for Mason’s grandfather and then brings over his granny’s tuna casserole, Mason is touched and wonders if he has misjudged R.B.

After tasting this recipe, would you change your mind?

Widow Savier’s (R.B.’s granny) Tuna Casserole

2 (5 oz.) cans chunky-type tuna in water (drain well)

1 cup frozen peas

1⁄2 cup milk

3⁄4 cup butter-Ritz-like crackers, crushed or crushed potato chips (R.B. prefers the chips)

4 oz. (about 2-1⁄2 cups) thick egg noodles

1 can (10.75 oz.) cream of mushroom soup

1⁄4 tsp. garlic powder

Bit of butter (it is the south after all)

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Cook noodles according to package instructions, adding peas during the last 2 minutes of cooking; drain in strainer.
  • While noodles are cooking, in a separate bowl, mix together soup, milk and garlic powder.
  • Stir in the noodles and peas, then add the tuna.
  • Transfer to a 1-1⁄2 quart lightly buttered casserole.
  • Bake 15 minutes; top with cracker crumbs OR CHIPS. Continue baking 5 – 10 minutes or until heated through.

Serves 4, so Widow Savier doubles the recipe for Mason’s family so they have leftovers.

MY REVIEW

This is a nice book that  teaches about forgiveness and a lesson in the value of something. Mason was curious when his grandfather told him about a very special penny. Its value was not in money but what it represented. All Mason  could think of at the  time was how much that  old penny was worth. He wanted to sell the penny and  buy new shoes and an IPad.

The story shared what the real value and history of the penny is.  I did love the way the authors used an object to show readers that sometimes when we think something is not valuable, it can turn out to be more valuable than any amount of money.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

With this book I have tools that will help me stop the negative thoughts. The author provides practical tools along with scriptures and stories that  help readers overcome what the enemy uses to deter us from God.

I liked the scientific facts provided as well. It is evident that much research has been done in the book to guide us to make clearer and more Biblical decisions. There is hope and I like that the author teaches us about doubt, anxiety and taking control over our minds.

About the Book

Book: Tangles and Tinsel

Author: Jennifer Sienes

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance, Christmas Fiction, Women’s Fiction, and Southern Fiction

Release Date: November 21, 2023

Why didn’t her life get the memo regarding Christmas being about peace on Earth and goodwill to men?

For the first Christmas in years, Kimberley Saint John may actually get that peace on Earth she’s been dreaming of. Daddy has been sober for going on two years (a record), and  if he stays that way, she might have a chance for a life of her own. Maybe even a family. And between you, her, and the fence post, she’d love it if that family included her childhood friend Jax Jenson and his kids.

Except he’s still mourning the loss of his wife.

Jax doesn’t understand why no one has snatched up sweet, beautiful, and funny Kim. Then again, the way she carries hurt and betrayal around like battle gear might have something to do with it. And he is not knight-in-shining-armor material. His wife could’ve told her that.

Kim’s dreams are shattered when Mama shows up, after a twenty-year absence, sending Kim into a tailspin of worry for her daddy. Desperate, she turns to the one man who gets her—Jax.

What will it take for Kim and Jax to untangle emotions that keep them from trusting in God’s sovereignty and find purpose through the pain?

Why was it people made such a fuss over the holidays? Seemed to me, even if you had a perfect family, which I surely didn’t, it was still a crazy time when everyone one-upped each other. It was kind of like playing holiday poker. I’ll take your worries over how to seat twenty of your closest relatives and raise you one need to order a pre-cooked meal because I can’t even find time to shop. Of course, the shame of not having a homemade Thanksgiving supper raised the ante quite a bit, so I generally won.

Because Daddy and me would have a couple of kids with us this year, I vowed things would be different. I was even willing to shop, cook, and bake, which was the trifecta of disaster as far as I was concerned. I had nothing against shopping—it was part of my everyday life. Hunting down great deals on vintage furniture was in my job description. But food? Only as a source of survival. Spent too many years cooking for Daddy after Mama left us, and baking was downright messy and time consuming. I’d never be held up as a great example of a Southern lady. But I’d push through it for Nora and Chandler. And if I was going to be completely honest, maybe a little for their daddy, too.

Never could see myself with my own children. For one thing, though it might stretch the imagination of most to believe it, I was a traditionalist. Even if I hadn’t stepped foot into a church since I was fifteen, there was an order to life and love that shouldn’t be forsaken. Since I hadn’t been on a date for more months than I could count on both hands, it wasn’t likely I’d be getting married anytime soon. Might be my lack of culinary skills played into that some.

For another thing, I’d heard a couple of the older ladies in my apartment complex refer to me as a spinster. It would appear, unless God miraculously plopped Mr. Perfect-for-me on my doorstep this very day, I’d be too old to have kids even if I ever did get married. At thirty-five, I was already stretching the limits of my biological clock. Add to that a year or two of dating, then a proper engagement, and I might as well accept my lot in life—once I figured out what that was exactly.

MY REVIEW

There is a lot of emotional turmoil in this book which you may think is hard to read. However I found it helpful and easy to relate to the characters. Forgiveness is definitely a big topic in the story and how we all struggle with that at times. I found the  story to be a realistic look at how  people deal with grief, forgiveness and second chances.

Kim is ready for the holidays and just enjoying some quiet time. She has had a hard time the last few years helping her dad overcome drinking. Things seem to be going well for both of them until someone unexpectedly shows up. . Kim can’t seem to let go that her mother abandoned her and left her alone with her dad.

Jax is a great character who has been through so much after losing his wife. He tries to do the best he can raising their children while working long hours. He and Kim have been friends for a long time and some people  hope that they will  get together.  Two lonely hurting people looking for hope at Christmastime makes this story so special.

The author makes a good point of how we hold on to things. In order to move on we need to deal with them straight on. If you are having a problem with someone, talk to them and allow God to restore the relationship. We allow the enemy to separate us when we get hurt or offended. Kim must face her past and allow forgiveness to set her free.  Kim’s friend tells her, “You push people away like you gotta reject them before they can reject you.” Well I can relate to that as well. It is a defense mechanism that  I use to protect myself. Kim oh how I know your pain of feeling alone.

I did get a surprise in the story when Kim finds out the real reason her mother left. It was very emotional and could be a trigger for some readers. The topic is one that the author handles very well. It illustrates how we never know what someone has been through. It also shows that when we allow  ourselves to forgive and ask forgiveness we can finally be free. The ending is beautiful and shares that  family is important.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Clint

When I first heard the song See A Victory by Elevation Worship, I assumed the lyrics, “You took what the enemy meant for evil and You turned it for good,” were pulled verbatim (translated, of course) from the Bible, probably one of Paul’s letters.

Despite not knowing exactly from where they came, the words stuck with me. It’s inspiring to believe that God can take the terrible things that have happened to us – or even because of us – and use them to bring about something beautiful.

When I looked them up, I found that the lyrics are actually a derivation of what Joseph said to his brothers years after they sold him into slavery. “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20 NIV)

Placing the words within the context of a story makes them even more impactful for me. It’s astounding to think about Joseph’s faith and spiritual maturity to not only offer forgiveness in this moment, but also to recognize the immense benefits that have arisen from such a horrific injustice against him.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized how much this passage is related to my book. That’s the funny thing about writing stories. You often don’t know what they’re about until you’re done.

Steal Fire From The Gods is the most faith-based story I’ve ever written. It’s also the darkest and certainly the weirdest. It’s an action-packed book in which AI has discovered the secrets of elemental magic and used that power to overthrow humanity.

But that’s just the concept. This story isn’t about magic robots. It’s about a person undergoing a crisis of faith. And you could hardly blame him.

Gunnar Graves and his family did everything the right way. They were faithful, devoted, and kind. They prayed, studied God’s Word, and followed His laws. Then, they were decimated. As a result, Gunnar is angry at God and even at his late parents for their blind faith that – from his perspective – ultimately failed them all.

Gunnar spends much of the story trying to harness magic for what he believes is a righteous cause. But despite his altruistic intentions, it eludes him, causing him even more anger and frustration. How could an all-powerful, all-loving God place such an awesome power into the hands of oppressive machines instead of mankind?

To make matters worse, Gunnar and other characters in the story have secrets that I won’t spoil in this blog. Suffice to say there are aspects of who they are and what they have done that would cause most people to cast them out if the truth became known. So instead, they hide themselves from God and other humans. More separation. More shame. More darkness.

It often feels that way for believers. In our weakness, we can simultaneously be angry at God for what we perceive as injustice – getting what we don’t think we deserve, or not getting what we think we do – while also being convinced there is something about us that will prevent us from ever connecting with His love, joy, and peace.

But there is always hope. God often reminds us of His presence by not only saving us from our circumstances but also using our weaknesses as tools to create wonderful outcomes. Paradoxically, good comes about not in spite of evil, but seemingly because of it.

As believers, we understand this is not a function of necessity. To bring about this good, God did not need evil to occur. But He will use it to demonstrate His ability to turn the enemy’s own weapons against him.

These occurrences wouldn’t make sense outside the knowledge that there is an all-powerful, all-loving Father. That reminder of His presence – that He must be with us because otherwise, such good springing from such evil would be impossible – is in many cases a greater blessing than the good itself.

But He will not force these blessings upon us. We are free to choose whether we will trust and accept them. We do so through faith, selflessness, and surrender.

That’s where we find the power. That’s where we find goodness. That’s where we find hope.

That’s what I want readers to take away from this book.

MY REVIEW

The very first sentenced stopped me in my tracks. “I stopped believing in God  years ago.” That is what our main characters says as he witnessed a destroying of everything he loved. How would I feel if that happened to me? I would probably feel just like him. He lost his faith when everything was taken from him. That   would be so difficult to overcome. It does remind me of Job in the Bible. The difference is Job never lost faith.

The story takes on an eerie theme when AI is in control. Gunnar  knows that they are watching everything and hears every whispered word. What a strange sight to see everyone dressed exactly alike. The world he lives in now is so strange. AI even wants to match Gunnar up with a mate. I don’t know if I could ever adjust to this kind of control. As I begin to get to know Gunnar, I realize he has a secret. What will happen if someone finds out? Will he be shunned or worse?

The story is full of surprises where we find Gunnar given a choice that  could make him a king. The question is does he want to have to bow to the machines. Think about the struggle faced before him. He doesn’t like the way he is living but has a chance to be king. The choice is where I wanted to think on for a bit. The enemy loves to entice us and we begin to struggle with making the right decision. Gunnar is now faced with the decision to stand or run. What will he choose?

There is a bit of magic  and powers in the book which at times I didn’t care for. But I had to see if this “magic”  represented something that would lead  Gunnar back to his faith.   “Our darkest secrets can be our greatest strengthens, if only we allow ourselves to see.”  Will Gunnar start to open his eyes to the truth? God  never left  him and is waiting for Him to come back to Him.

Catriona is a unique character. She has caught the attention of Gunnar yet she has a dark secret that would destroy any feelings he has for her. They do work well together but what happens when he finds out the truth? Will he be able to forgive her? When she tells Gunnar the reason she is here with him , I was shocked. She  tells him, “We are here because you don’t have faith in anything or anybody.”  The author does  such a good job explaining what trust  means that I had to write it down in my journal.

The ending is action packed and will answer all the questions that I have asked . Within this fantasy world  lies truth and a way back to God when you feel lost. There is hope and freedom when God’s  power is felt. What happens to Gunnar? Does he find his way back to faith?

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
