REVIEW

Oh how I loved this story so much. I love the setting and the people in the town. With a quaint Bed & Breakfast in renovation it is sure to stir up many adventures. I’m not sure that the B&B was a great investment but with  the help of  our exciting  characters the emotions run strong. 

Vienna comes back to visit her mom hoping for a better relationship for them. When her mom finds out about her job there is hope that Vienna will stay longer. I liked the mother  and daughter dynamics and how realistic it is. It gives hope to those who struggle in this area and the author illustrates how restoration happens. 

Matt finds his sister in over her head when he shows up at the B&B. Kay wanted so desperately to make this investment work but she didn’t realize all the work it will take to make the Inn profitable. When she leaves to help a friend out Matt is left in charge. This is where the heart of the story is. There are two more characters that bind this group together. With compassion, trust and faith their lives change in ways they never imagined. The carpenter that needs work and his wife who honors her commitment are beautiful examples of never giving up. 

Matt and Vienna will soon realize they need each other not only to get the  B&B  up and running but also to find a relationship built on trust. I loved each step the renovation took and how these two couples began a friendship that shows how lending a hand opens doors that were once closed. I kept thinking  about how there is always hope and to never give up. The ending is beautiful and I will always remember this story that is filled with life lessons.

About the Author

This is why I love to write historical fiction, especially romance. I interweave my own thoughts and feelings with those of my characters. My words become theirs, and their responses mirror my own as I fight to keep my head above water.

I spent dozens of hours researching When the Flames Ravaged, the story of a horrific circus fire in Hartford, Connecticut on July 6, 1944. I gasped, I wept, and I marveled at the courage of rescuers who sacrificed their own lives to save others. True, live-or-die battles fueled my imagination, and composite characters leaped to life.

At one point, my hero dives into dark water, grasping with frail human understanding to comprehend the scope of the disaster. He decides good and evil are locked in an everlasting struggle, and humans are mere pawns stuck in the middle. Then he asks, “What is the use of serving God if He won’t protect you?”

Who has never asked the same thing when tragedy strikes? Pat answers and platitudes won’t suffice. Only a personal quest to discover an acceptable answer to this age-old question will help us find peace in the midst of the churning sea of doubt.

I hope my novel will toss a live preserver to everyone treading water.

MY REVIEw

I was struck by the overwhelming grief in the story. A tragic fire destroys not only the circus but many who  were in the tent excitedly enjoying the show. Family’s gathered together to make a day of it. The author mixes historic truth with a bit of fiction to deliver a story that leaves me asking the same question one of the main characters does.

Evelyn is devoted to her sister, brother-in-law and two beautiful children. She wanted to join them at the circus but her boss would not let her off. When news of the fire travels to the community Evelyn rushes to find her family. What she sees is devastation, death and loss. Where is her family?  Her grief would bring anyone to their knees. When  her neighbor comes to visit Evelyn asks why did God allow this to happen. The answer was delivered in a compassionate way as the  neighbor softly says, “ if God saved every person who was ever in danger, what kind of world would this be? If miracles happened every day, they wouldn’t be miracles anymore. Sometimes God lets nature take its course.”

Hank is a clown in the circus but hides a dark secret that brings him sadness daily. When he meets Evelyn there is a spark but I think Evelyn wasn’t as excited to pursue him as he was her. When he tries to help Evelyn find her family they  do grow a little closer. He blames himself for not stopping the person he believes is responsible for starting the fire. Oh yes the blame game gets us every time. We allow the enemy to whisper to us that we are at fault and not loved by anyone. One thing we must remember is, “we are not responsible for  other people’s actions.” 

The story takes us on a journey to try to find Evelyn’s missing  nephew. Deep in her heart Evelyn believes he survived the fire and won’t stop until she gets an answer. The town is trying to recover from the loss of many while trying  to start over. The author does an amazing job of illustrating forgiveness , miracles and a new relationship with God.

I’ve long been a fan of 60s music—since the 1960s! Neil Diamond has been a favorite performer since that time. I must have been in fourth grade with “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime” was released. I had no idea of any deeper meaning, just loved the song—it would’ve gotten full 98 score from me for having “a great beat and fun to dance to” if I’d been a judge on American Bandstand with Dick Clark.

 

Fast-forward a good fifty plus years, and I’m researching 60s music where the song title has a girl’s name in it for my Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue series and I run across “Cracklin’ Rosie.” That was one song I sang with gusto. So fun. But I never was sure of the meaning. What or who was Cracklin’ Rosie? Then I got an inspiration that made me laugh out loud. I even contacted friends to share—tickled me to no end. What if Rosie was a chiropractor? That was the genesis for this story.

 

Of course, it needed to be funny. And who better to add humor and conflict than a medical doctor who fancied himself as an amateur comedian? The idea stuck and the brainstorming began. I have to tell you my critique partner, Diana Brandmeyer, understands humor. It was a blast coming up with ways to make it funny.

 

I hope you will agree, and that there will be moments when you snort or chuckle. Or even laugh out loud and have someone look over at you, so you tell them, “You gotta read this book.” Anyway, whether anyone watches you read, I hope you’ll enjoy this latest addition to the Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue series, Cracklin’ Rosie.

MY REVIEW 

This series has been so fun to read. I love how the author opens up the story with a funny encounter with a cat and a fellow doctor for Rose. I adore her last name and the song that it is based on. I can hear the  song in my head. I grew up in the     seventies so I knew this story would bring me down memory lane. Ok I did laugh at Rose’s last name. I couldn’t wait to follow Rose in her adventure as a doctor    opening her own clinic.

Meeting Brett may  be  be a challenge for Rose as they are both doctors trying to start their own clinic up. I found him to be a little pushy, funny and a challenge that will have readers furiously turning pages to see what happens between this pair. When Brett finds out that Rose  is a chiropractor he sure acts a little weird. His outburst at the coffee shop turns heads. Now Rose’s temper is getting to her but stands her ground. Let the competition begin. 

Oh my the humor in the  story is great. Well Brett thinks he is funny but Rose doesn’t quite see him as funny. I loved the references to The Mary Tyler Moore show and others that bring this time period to life. The author does a great job of making the story realistic with perfect snippets of favorite shows and songs  from the seventies. I miss those days sometimes but I can always go back there whenever I want as I reread this story. 

The story takes a look at how hard it was in the seventies to not only be a woman doctor but specialize in the field of being a Chiropractor. Rose seems to always have to defend her career and at times there are grumbling among the doctors. When a big announce is about to be made Rose is anxious to hear who has been chosen to be on the team. Brett really steps up to defend Rose in a very public way. I liked how the author incorporated faith in the story. Trust is a big issue between Brett and Rose as they try to decide if they could ever be a couple. 

I loved the story and  how the author gave me a look back at a time period where memories of listening to the songs mentioned in the story were nice. The best part of the story is a gentle message of going to God to seek answers and believing in yourself. A little nod to the cardinal is the perfect ending to this delightful story.

 LETTERS OF WISDOM BY WANDA BRUNSTETTER 

Irma Miller thought having a family of her own would bring her joy and a sense of accomplishment, but she struggles with memories of the abuse she suffered as a child at the hand of her stepfather. When she becomes physically and emotionally abusive to her own children, she reaches out to her friend Doretta for prayer and wisdom. But Irma may find herself at an even darker emotional place before she will admit she needs professional help to heal the past traumas. Will Doretta’s letters of wisdom help Irma and her family, or will too much be broken to ever be repaired?

MY REVIEW 

This series has been very enjoyable but this book will always be my favorite. The author tackles a sensitive subject with compassion and opens the doors for healing from those who have been through a similar situation. I appreciate the candid look at child abuse and how it affects many. It was particularly emotional for me as I was a victim like Irma. 

Irma was so easy to relate to because we have similar childhoods. Her abuse came from her stepfather but mine was from my father and older brother. Irma still has memories from what she endured but when she marries and moves away  she almost feels free for the first time. Lingering deep in her heart is pain, bitterness and unforgiveness. She has carried this secret for awhile. Like Irma’s mother, mine stood silently by and did nothing. The pain of not feeling safe and protected by her mother is hard to understand at times. Irma can’t understand why her mother allowed this to happen to her and never once step in to stop it.

 Irma’s husband LaVern is away from  home a lot due to his job. He has no idea that Irma is feeling stress around  the children. He is gentle and loving with his wife but he has no idea of the secrets she has been hiding. When a death in the family sends Irma back home there was definite tension between her and her mother. Irma’s mother feels guilty for what happened to her oldest daughter at the hands of her second husband. She tried to stop him but his anger turned to her. She hid bruises from everyone and I understand her feeling of helplessness. My mother did not step in at all for me and for a very long time in my life I was angry with her. 

The story shows how Irma is becoming more angry towards her children and begins to abuse them. This broke my heart. I wanted to sit next to Irma and tell her that she needs to seek help right away. Her bitterness is destroying her life and causing her children to be afraid of her. I’m so thankful that her dear friend continued to send letters to Irma and encourage her to seek help. I will leave the ending of this story for readers to see what the outcome is.

As I end my review I will share a few personal thoughts. For many years I suffered through physical and emotional abuse by my father and oldest brother. For years I cut ties to my family. I was angry that the two people who should have kept me safe didn’t. They let me know that I was not  loved by them and had never wanted me. As I finished reading Irma’s story I am thankful for the author for sharing this story. Abuse happens everyday. But there is freedom when we forgive and are forgiven. Please make sure you read the Dear Reader section at the end of the book. It will help you understand why this story is so personal to the author. I’m grateful for the author being transparent and helping me continue to forgive my parents and oldest brother everyday.
