About the Author

Karen Brough is an Australian wife, mother, and former Primary School Teacher & has always had a passion for writing. She is the author of ‘Be Held by Him’ Finding God when life knocks you off your feet.

Ten years ago, when hit by a mystery illness, Karen began sharing the encouragement God gave to her, with others. Her heart loves nothing better than to demystifying how and who God is in the everyday and the miraculous.

She loves spending time with her husband and children. In Summer, you’ll find her enjoying the water and offering gelato to anyone who might drop by. In Winter, she makes soups, breads, and muffins. Often hiding vegetables in sweet recipes, much to her children’s dismay (secretly they love it though).

More from Karen

I wrote this book because I was given a dream to do it. I’d had my life turned upside down through medical mystery, and yet in it, God revealed His heart of love for me; and for those who are walking through the tough of life.

At every point, God unveiled every detail of the book, through dreams, verses, songs, life events and so much more. This book series is a testament to His miraculous, hope filled and loving hand, which is ready to pick us up, hold us tenderly and show us the next step. He speaks in ways each one of us understands, and I LOVE this about Him.

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed the book and companion guidebook. It walks us through a journey with the author as she seeks to find answers. We all struggle in different areas and this book gives us tools of how to grow closer to God. The author went through a period of illness where she felt at times that there was no answers for her. I liked how friends came along side her and encouraged her with God’s Word.

As I read her story I saw how vulnerable she was at times. I know that  we all at one point try to hide our weaknesses but God is there to give us strength. She does continue to talk about her illness quite a bit that  at times for  me was a little too much. I understand her struggles but sometimes she confused me with her back and forth of healing and then not believing everything was all right.

The book is worth reading to get clarity in parts of our life that  we struggle with. I did not always agree with everything  she said but did find nuggets of wisdom in the book. I appreciate her openness and heart to share with others.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Rachael’s Decision

I loved writing this series in a bakery setting, except I gained weight just reading about the desserts and found myself craving cakes and cookies. Rachael has an interesting past, and she has a loving heart. You’ll want to laugh with her and root for her. You’ll love Caleb, and you’ll root for him, too! This book has twists, turns, and it’s full of surprises.

The most fun I have is meeting readers like you who I consider friends through social media, at conferences, and that I’ve met at Amish talks, Amish Girlfriend Getaways, and many other places. If I wasn’t writing and speaking, I would’ve never meet people like you. That’s what keeps me writing. Thank you so much for your interest in my books.

My daughter, Misty, had a little girl, Jolene, and she’s keeping me busy, and she’s so much fun. Some days, she on my lap and we write together! Thank you for joining me here today! I hope you’ll connect with me on Facebook!

MY REVIEW

I loved getting to know Rachel better in this last book of the  series. We are able to understand her loss better as the author shares how she lost her intended husband. It is mentioned that Rachel has a limp due to the accident which I think has caused her to be a little self conscious. I adore how Rachel is so caring and humble.

The author gives us a story where Rachel finds herself being pursued by two men. I know it was hard for Rachel to make a decision but  I was happy  with her choice  and was hoping for a happily ever after. However complications set in when Rachel tells Caleb something that she feels will cause him not to want to marry her. I loved the turmoil that  we witness as Rachel is torn about who to marry.

The author shows readers how important it is to rely on your faith and to trust God to show you the right direction for you life. I liked both men and at times I could understand why Rachel had a difficult decision. Nathan wants a mother for his children but does he truly love Rachel? Caleb loves  Rachel and the feeling are mutual but Rachel believes he will be unhappy because she can’t give him a family.

This story is filled with emotions that will make you cry as well as give you hope as we follow Rachel on her journey to find happiness. There is one character in the  story that really  tried  my patience.  She was very selfish and demanding. Her heart is bitter and jealous  as she finds out that her future is in jeopardy. This character teaches us that bitterness causes us to become closed off from feelings of joy. The  author does an excellent job of illustrating how envy can become something that pulls you away from God’s plan for your life.

I loved the surprises in the  story and  how faith  plays a big part in showing how we should never give up on happiness. This is a beautiful story about family, love, community and faith as we close out this series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Betty Ruth

Zacchaeus was always a puzzle to me. How did he become a hated tax collector and only

One meeting with Jesus turned his life around. So, I imagined a story, gave him a family and neighbors to create a life around him as he accumulated his “taxes.”

MY REVIEW

The author takes a figure from the Bible and expands on the life he might have had. Most of us know the story of Zacchaeus and how be became a man who wanted wealth. It is easy to see how this man was more interested in hearing  coins clank together than being with his family. His mother had leprosy which kept everyone away from her. It must have been so lonely to know that no one  wanted to be near you. The story illustrates how greed takes over and how we can turn our backs on doing the right thing.

I did like the description of the  time  period and how hard it was to survive at times. Zacchaeus can see that his family is starting to disappear doing other things. Is he on his own now? How will he be able to support himself?  When he is finally offered a job he had three rules to follow. Zacchaeus was to never cheat, never lie and keep his word. Sounds like good rules to follow, so I wondered how this would play out.

The best part of the story for me was when Zacchaeus realizes that he is not happy. He thought he had everything he needed but something was missing. Counting his coins over and over used to bring him joy. Why does he feel empty inside? His encounter with the Messiah is a powerful scene and I liked how he understands that he must change. All this time his greed has made him bitter and lonely.  Now he desires to follow the  Messiah   and experience forgiveness and unconditional love.

About the Author

No one is more surprised than I am to read the word author and know it applies to me. I had different dreams as a child, and this was not remotely on my radar. At three, I wanted to be an Olympic swimmer. When I was eight, I “ran for president,” telling people to vote for me in the election year when I would finally be thirty-five (I had calculated it precisely). In my teens, I had lowered the barand just wanted to be a lawyer. While those doors never opened, God has faithfully led me on a winding path to get me where I am today.

I have held a variety of jobs: customer service representative, loan processor, professional video game player, city councilwoman, church secretary, math teacher, and most importantly, mother. While I was training to be a teacher, God inspired me to write a yet-to-be-published children’s book. Not long after, I began this novel. I wrote a week each summer between school years while my son and his father were camping without me. Depending on how you want to count time, it either took me five weeks (of actual time in front of a computer screen) or three years (looking at a calendar) to finish. Then I spent several years editing and finding a publisher. I hope that you find as much pleasure from reading it as I got from writing it.

More from Jaycee

God works in mysterious ways. I honestly never intended to be a writer, and this entire endeavor started in a way that seemed almost accidental at the time. I had just finished my first year of teaching mathematics. That summer, the members of my immediate family went on a five-day “male bonding” camping trip.

Left home alone, I called friends and family members to reconnect and fill my need for social interaction. One conversation in particular left me with a lot of “what if” questions about how life would have been different for me without God in the picture. I wrestled with different scenarios and then decided I needed to organize my thoughts.

I started writing and thirteen hours later ended up with about 40 pages of text. I sent those to my cousin, Jill, who wanted to know what happened next. Her encouragement kept me writing until this novel was completed, two summer camping trips later.

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed following Jen on her journey as she tries to do the right thing for herself and her unborn baby. Finding out that she is pregnant was not met with excitement from her boyfriend. His immediate idea was to get rid of it. Oh how I dislike when someone calls a baby, “it.” Kyle is less than helpful and I wanted him out of Jen’s life. What really bothered me the most was Jen’s mother. She is abusive and tries to still run Jen’s life. I’m not sure that Jen’s decision to leave and take a job as a caretaker is a good idea. We all have made hasty decisions so maybe Jen will find out that God has a plan  for her in this remote area of Nebraska.

Stuart is unsure about hiring Jen to be his parents caregivers. She is pregnant, not really trained as a nurse and a complete stranger. Taking a chance he hires her and decides to see how things go. I liked how they became friends and started opening up to each other. Jen’s life has not been filled with love so her choices are not always good when dating  someone. Stuart gives her great advice about making  better choices. I love how he tells her that she is worth loving. I don’t think she has ever heard that in her life. In that moment a seed is planted and I’m hoping that  Jen will start to have confidence in herself.

The story moves at a very quick pace and before  I knew it we see Jen and Stuart start to become serious about each other. I won’t ruin the surprises in the story. I do like how the author illustrates that we are all worthy and that God has a plan for each of us. The  author left me with several questions so I’m hoping for a follow up to this story.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
