More from Jodie

It’s been such a joy to set a series in the town where I graduated from college almost 40 years ago. I’m so thankful my husband suggested it, as it’s been a lot of fun digging into the history of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding area during the 19th century. Before this series, all my other books had settings in the Mid-west—Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.

When I started writing the first book, Abigail’s Pursuit, quite a number of years ago, I never intended to create a series about prodigals, let alone experience the pain of it in my life… but God knew what the future held. While each of the books in this Time to Come Home Series revolves around the common theme of a prodigal, each of the tales is a stand-alone. My prayer is for those who have children who have wandered away, or perhaps were once prodigals themselves, or even others who enjoy Christian historical romance with strong spiritual themes—that each of these groups find encouragement through reading this series.

Hannah’s Quest was exciting to write as I incorporated information about one of the oldest continually run hardware stores in PA that is still operating to this day, even though it’s changed names various times through the years. I hope you’ll enjoy stepping back in time to a small town in south-central PA where faith and family are celebrated.

MY REVIEW

This has been such a beautiful story to read. I loved following Hannah on her journey. She sure didn’t do well at the jobs she was hired for. When she worked at a leather shop I could picture the blisters on her hand. It was a blessing that her boss let her go. Oh it wasn’t because she did a bad job, but because her hands were so painful to look at. We get to see what her life was like before going out on her own. Her aunt and uncle treated her more like hired help than family. Hannah feels like she is not loved which makes her struggle in relationships.

Luke is a hard worker who wants to take care of his grandmother no matter what the cost. I really liked how Luke is so respectful and caring as he notices his grandmother’s health start to decline. There are several encounters with Hannah that are comical with each of them trying to push the other  away.

The author illustrates how Luke is angry at God because he sees his grandmother slowly slipping away. How can he love a God who is taking someone he loves away? Anna continues to pray for Luke to come back to God and also to find a wife. I wonder if Anna has someone in mind for Luke?

I loved reading how faith is evident throughout the story and shows readers how God can heal bitterness and feelings of  not being loved. I appreciate how the author slowly builds a relationship built on faith and continues to guide them to what His plan is for them.

“ Are you going to be faithful with what God is asking of you.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel Tour & Giveaway

About the Book

Book: The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel (The Last Disciple Book 5)

Author: Kurt Brouwer

Genre: Biblical Fiction

Release Date: December 19, 2025

Discover the Untold Story of Sharing the Gospel Message

John, the last disciple of Christ, holds the completed Gospel of John in his hand. But when an earthquake strikes, he and his two scribes, Emmaus and Avram, must fight fire and destruction to preserve the precious scroll.

The epic saga of the Last Disciple continues in this captivating new Christian historical novel from Kurt Brouwer.

Stand With John the Last Disciple of Christ

John had followed Jesus for three years. He saw the Son of God sacrifice his life on the Cross; he entered the empty tomb after Jesus rose from the grave; and he watched his Lord and Savior ascend to heaven from the Mount of Olives.

Now his mission is to share his eyewitness account of Jesus with believers throughout the Roman Empire. In the face of grave difficulties, God provides help from two surprising sources. Tiberius Celsus, a Roman officer and unlikely ally, brings a copy of the Gospel of John all the way from Ephesus to the believers in Antioch. And the Apostle Timothy helps John fulfill his divine mission of sharing the story of Christ with believers in Ephesus.

Temptation And Betrayal Plague Believers

John also faces human fear and frailty among believers. Archelaus, a wine merchant, resists temptation and returns to the faith. Diotrephes, a former church leader, betrays both his faith and his fellow believers.

If you’re struggling with doubt, searching for meaning, or are hungry to deepen your faith, The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel is the Christian novel you’ve been waiting for—biblically accurate fiction that strengthens and informs your faith.

Have you ever wondered what it truly cost to preserve, protect, and share Scripture? Do you long to experience the unwavering devotion of the early Christians? The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel will help you transform and renew your spiritual journey.

Don’t miss this fascinating tale of believers uniting to share the gospel message of salvation and the hope and promise of eternal life.

Over that time, he also wrote two investment books and articles in publications ranging from Forbes to the San Francisco Chronicle to Pension World. But now that’s ancient history. Kurt lives a quiet life with his wife so he should be hanging out at the beach, playing golf, and taking it easy, right?

Well, he does all that from time to time, but what gets him fired up these days is writing The Last Disciple Series of Christian historical novels as well as penning periodic blog posts on his web site.

 MY REVIEW

What a wonderful story to walk beside John as he shares Jesus with others. It was interesting to watch how John worked tirelessly to complete the Gospel of John. I can imagine long nights with John pouring his heart out as he shares his experience with Jesus. A discipline who walked beside Jesus now carries a valuable scroll for others to read. The author does a great job of  sharing the many trials John faced and how his love  for Jesus was evident.

I love how John was so dedicated to getting the scroll into others hands. “ I’m eager to find a way to get small passages into the hands of those who love God.”  It wasn’t easy to carry around a scroll but John knew how important it was for believers to read. Can you imagine the quickness in John’s spirit to get those precious words about Jesus to others? We should be like John and feel an urgency to share Jesus with others.

Excerpt from the Book

Chapter 1

Spring 1903, Sanders Creek, Oklahoma

“You ought’a be right proud of yourself.”

City Marshal Dusty McIntyre’s chest swelled at Deputy Tom Barker’s comment, then he heaved a sigh of relief, knowing the crafty swindler he’d been after for months was finally behind bars. He eyed the solemn prisoner in the cell. “I have to admit, there were days I wondered if we’d ever catch this weasel. Feels good to have him locked up.”

Ed Sloane’s eyes narrowed as he peered through the bars. “Just ’cause you got me locked up today, marshal, doesn’t mean you will tomorrow.” One cheek kicked upward in a cocky sneer.

Dusty wanted to smack that belligerent look off Sloane’s face, but he wouldn’t. As a law officer, he was bound by a different code than the man in his jail, and as a Christian, he was called by God to walk a straight path and control his temper. He looked at Sloane and recognized him for what he was—a lost man. A man on the road to hell if he didn’t change his ways real fast.

Sloane stuck his hands between two bars. “Think you could take these cuffs off now that you got me safe in your jail?”

Dusty didn’t miss the sarcasm that laced his prisoner’s voice. The man still didn’t seem to realize he’d been caught. Much as he’d like to leave Sloane handcuffed, he crossed the room, his boots echoing on the wood floor. He pulled a warm metal key from his shirt pocket, but stopped and glanced at Tom. “If he tries anything, shoot him.”

Tom pressed his lips together and nodded as he pulled his pistol from his holster and pointed it Sloan’s direction. “Be happy to.”

Dusty approached the cell with caution. Ed Sloane was slipperier than a greased hog at the county fair. A chill crept up Dusty’s spine when an evil glint flashed in the man’s pale blue eyes. What could bring a man to be so depraved that he would prey on the elderly and widows, stealing them blind, and leaving them penniless and heartbroken?

With a few rattles and clicks, the handcuffs were off, and Dusty moved back. Sloane chuckled a guttural laugh that sounded like a snarling, wounded animal. Shaking his head, Dusty crossed the room to his desk and tossed down the key. Tom picked it up, stuck it in the desk drawer, and then holstered his weapon.

“Don’t you reckon you ought’a head home to supper and tell that fine wife of yours all about your exceptional day?” Tom grinned, and his thick moustache twitched. “If she’s fixin’ that rhubarb pie of hers, you might save me a slice—if you’ve a mind to. Mmm mmm, it’s mighty fine.”

“I may do just that.” Dusty smiled at his deputy. Tom had been his best friend since school days, and it seemed natural to hire him as his assistant when Dusty’s father retired as City Marshal and Dusty took over. Most of the time he worked days and Tom evenings, but lately they’d both been pulling twenty-four hour shifts as their search for Sloane narrowed. They’d gone from house to house, ranch to ranch, searching for Sloane and his gang. His trail resembled that of a cyclone’s, leaving in its wake a debris path of desperation and destruction. Now that he’d captured Sloane, it shouldn’t be too hard to get the rest of his gang.

Dusty’s belly grumbled, and he yawned. All he wanted was to eat one of Emily’s fine meals, give her some lovin’, then hit the hay and sleep a full day and night.

Except for Sloane and the havoc he and his gang had caused lately, this past year had been the best Dusty could remember. First, he’d given his heart to God, then five months ago, he’d fallen in love and married the new banker’s daughter.

He longed to run fingers through Emily’s thick auburn hair. Soft as a horse’s muzzle, but as sweet smelling as the rose bushes in front of their porch. He imagined her pine green eyes twinkling with merriment as she played one of her little pranks on him. An only child, Dusty couldn’t wait until they had a houseful of children. Emily would be a wonderful mother, and he could only hope he’d be a decent father. God would help him in that area.

Ah, yes, life was good.

MY REVIEW

The author gives readers a story rich in history and faith. I enjoyed reading how traveling to town was an adventure. I could imagine the hustle and bustle as townspeople went to the mercantile for supplies. It was easy to visualize the town as the details come  to life.

Katie is a young woman who finds herself a widow and pregnant. She has suffered not only the loss of her husband but her home. I admired how she had strength to find a way to provide for herself as well as her baby. We see that she carries a bit of anger towards God for her loss but knows in her heart  she needs to ask God to forgive her. Meeting Dusty may be an answer to prayer when he takes her home to her family. I couldn’t wait to see if Katie would find happiness again.

Dusty reminds me of a rugged cowboy who looks tough but inside has a heart of gold. He has been living  a rough life since a loss he still can’t get over. When he offers to get Katie safely to her destination, we see a glimmer of his grace for other people. When he finds himself in a position to help out when Katie’s uncle is hurt, Dusty is torn between having feelings for Katie and still mourning the loss of his wife.

I like how the author illustrates redemption, forgiveness and trust as these two characters face trials.  One of the best parts of the story is when Mason talks to Dusty. I love how he explains to Dusty that he has no business thinking of marrying again until he gets his heart right with God. This allows Dusty to look at his heart and understand that he needs to fix his relationship with God. As we go through our daily lives I pray that we all have a “ Mason” who will speak up and help us find our way back to God when we go astray.

“ We only see a speck of what’s happening in our lives, but God sees the whole picture.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Now transplanted to the Arizona desert, this direct descendant of Davy Crockett and her husband of forty-plus years enjoy time with family where she shares tales of her small-town heritage and family legacies with their grandchildren. She is the author of The Crockett Chronicles series, The Relentless series, and The Weather Girls trilogy, as well as the stand-alone novel, Cheryl’s Going Home, her novella Tales of the Hob Nob Annex Café, and her split-time novels The Traveling Prayer Shawland The Forgotten Gratitude Journal. Her current spin-off series, The Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue, contains standalones with a common thread.

More from Jennifer

Ever have one of those songs that you’ve loved for a long time and then you discover someone else covered the song? As a general rule, I tend to like the first version better. It’s familiar and often brings up good memories.

However, (you knew there was a however coming, right?) I discovered a different version of “Pieces of April” solely by accident. And it was done by the guy who wrote the song, Dave Loggins. Three Dog Night’s version is great. Chuck Negron did some of his best work on that track. But Dave Loggins’s version touched me in a new way.

So, I did some investigating. For one thing, I wanted to know what the song was about. Was there really an April? Or was it just a play on words?

Turns out, there was an April. And that Dave Loggins enjoyed interacting with fans online. So he’d written that he and April (the girlfriend) had a relationship for three Aprils (meaning the month) before they broke up. He missed her and wrote the song for her and it was one of his favorites that he’d written.

However, (you should’ve known this one was coming ðŸ˜‰) Dave passe away in 2024 so I didn’t get to ask him any more questions.

As I was putting this series together, I listed all the rock and roll songs I could think of from 1960 to the early 1970s that had girls’ names in the titles. Then I grouped them for similarity in beat and title words. When I came to “Pieces of April”, I immediately knew it would have to be an amnesia story. I started it out as a young married couple who ends up going through this but it wasn’t working. I struggled a lot trying to rework what I’d been musing on for months and the funny thing is, once I got past chapter five, things started happening. I’m not a plotter but I’m not a pure pansters/discovery writer either. But this book was a lot of discovery for me and how the threads all got tied up, that’s a God thing.

MY REVIEW

This book explores forgiveness, faith and the past. Set in the 1970s it has a flair of nostalgic for me as I grew up as a teenager during this time period. The author makes  the story realistic with the lingo which for me was fun. It also mentions the Vietnam War that to this day brings me sadness. Who remember wearing a bracket that represented a POW?

For this story I want to focus on a few things. April is a spirited young lady who seems to have a past that suddenly comes stumbling back into her life. Readers don’t know at first what was so traumatic for her, but the emotions are felt. I like how she seems to be a clumsy person when several accidents cause her to be injured. Oh yes there is the new neighbor that she has to face as well. This is significant because they share a past.

Paul comes back as a Vietnam Veteran to a place he once grew up. At first I was thinking “not another amnesia story”, but quickly shut that thought down. This story is done  slowly with an emphasis of rediscovering faith, trust and new beginnings. I always tell people not to look in the rear view mirror. Bringing things up from the past can be hard if it is used to hurt someone. In this case, it illustrates healing in a gentle way while finding who you are. I love  this story especially because it shows how taking steps to overcome the past leads to freedom.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit.The review is my own opinion.
