Coming Home to Truth is the second in a trilogy of books set in a small Iowa town during the years 1913 through 1918. This is the second series of books I have written. The Tomorrow series is the first set, and if you’ve already read it, you will recognize characters that appeared in Hope for Tomorrow, Promise for Tomorrow, and Dreaming of Tomorrow.

This book is a delightful story of Conrad, a single dad, and Lacy, a young lady searching for a place to belong. Conrad would like to find a mother for his two school-age children but feels that the risks are just too high. Lacy wants to prove that she can support herself and can use her talents in photography to establish a new career.

In this story, Lacy’s friends see her differently than she sees herself. It causes her to take a second look at her life to decide what is true and what isn’t. This book takes us on a journey with Lacy and Conrad through trials and joys where deception and the truth can sometimes look an awfully lot alike.

MY REVIEW

This has been such a refreshing story to read. I loved getting to know Lacy better and mature into a sweet young woman. Her excitement to follow her friend to a new city sounds fun and Lacy was ready to be out on her own. After all being eighteen is grown up as we all know. Let’s just say not everything goes smoothly arriving at their destination. Lacy’s friend Rose seems to distance herself from Lacy at some point and that upset me. I wonder why Rose has changed her attitude all of a sudden? Maybe she has found new friends that are not all that nice to be around.

Lacy surprised me with her determination not to go back home. I’m sure it wasn’t easy during this time period to find a job and be on your own as a young woman. I did laugh at the first encounter she had with Conrad. Let’s talk about him for a bit. I like his work ethics and how he has stepped up and cared for his children after losing his wife. He is a loner but at times he does think about how nice it would be to have a woman around.

Lacy has a hard time convincing her parents that she is doing well on her own. When her mother comes to town, talk about chaos. How do you tell your mother as nicely as you can, that you are not going back with her? There are times that she isn’t sure if she is making the right choice, but Lacy keeps moving forward.

All along Lacy has been wanting to believe that she is important and can do things on her own. She has a lot to think about and with Conrad starting to show interest she isn’t sure what to do. I appreciate how the author writes a story where growth and trust come into play.

I did have a little problem with Lacy focused on money and wealth throughout the story. I know she comes from a poor family but she needs to realize that money doesn’t make you happy. You will have to read the story to see what happens as Lacy is set on making a living and proving to herself and her family that she can do this all by herself.

Setting The Starlet Spy in Sweden

Hej! If you’ve ever been to Ikea, then you know that’s the Swedish greeting for Hello! Prior to writing The Starlet Spy, my

knowledge of the Swedish culture was limited. It seemed I wasn’t alone. Early last year, I held a poll on my social media asking if anyone had ever read a book set in Sweden. A sweeping majority said no.

Since all of my previous books are set in the United States, this is my first novel with an international setting. So I immersed myself into research. I read books about the country, watched videos, followed Swedish Instagrammers to learn more about the language. And let me tell you, I totally fell in love with this Scandinavian world. It is now on my bucket list to visit because it’s just that gorgeous. I wrote The Starlet Spy with a romantic adventure vibe. I wanted to take the reader on a tour of this amazing country, from the classically beautiful Stockholm, to the quaint fishermen city of Malmo, to the ancient streets of Sigtuna—one of Sweden’s oldest villages—to the brilliant Northern Lights in the Lapland region.

Not only did I want to paint the scene of these various places, but I also wanted to introduce the Swedish culture. Tucked within the pages of The Starlet Spy, the reader will find traces of Scandinavian folklore and legends, which was super fun to explore. But to be honest, my favorite inclusion of Swedish culture was incorporating a traditional dance—the Hambo! It’s such an interesting and unique dance, and I may have been trying to coax my husband into trying it with me for an Instagram Reel, but so far, no such luck! Though I have no problem getting him to enjoy Fika with me. Fika, my friends, is a coffee break, or simply coffee. Just as the British favor their tea, the Swedes are adamant about their fika. So I can most definitely relate.

If all this intrigues you, I welcome you to read The Starlet Spy. It’s set in 1943, which was a pivotal time for Sweden during World War II. If you’ve read my previous stories, you know how much I love to weave as much true history into the chapters. This book has by far the most!

MY REVIEW

What a brilliant storyline where a Hollywood star becomes a spy in order to attain information from others. Amelie is perfect for the mission because well people don’t consider her smart. Awe but that’s what will make her the perfect spy. She will be able to gain trust without suspicion. I loved how the author treats us to a trip to Sweden during the 1940s with historical facts and breathtaking views of the land and culture.

Amelie is taking a big risk but she wants to serve her country. Maybe now others will respect her when she succeeds at the biggest role she has ever had. I’m rooting for her but I except her to run into danger at any minute. The author had me on the edge of my seat anticipating Amelie’s every move.

Finn is a fascinating character. I couldn’t figure out if he should be trusted or if Amelie should keep her guard up. He isn’t an overly affectionate person and at times seems to have this disdain look on his face. As time goes on maybe we will see a softer side to him. Nonetheless Amelie must keep her wits about her. Her focus must remain on her mission. Her life depends on it.

With secrets that change the lives of many this story fills my need for intrigue. It is easy to feel part of the story as the author gives vivid details of each move our heroine makes. I was shocked at one particular fact and wondered why someone would deny knowing a person desperate for answers. The truth is starting to come to the surface and Amelie’s cover may be found out.

This exciting journey does have twists that are so subtle I almost didn’t catch their meaning. I loved how the author cleverly put the pieces together and end the story with a few surprises. I highly recommend readers to not miss the authors notes at the end. It is without a doubt a look at history with a twist of fiction that makes this story so believable and enjoyable to read.

MY REVIEW

It’s really happening everyone, The proposal we have been waiting for is now here. Finn is on bended knee asking that all important question to Kenni. The crowd is waiting for that all important “yes” when a scream is heard. Being the sheriff, Kenni reacts and leaves Finn kneeling without an answer. Whose body is laying on the tracks and why was this person murdered? Looks like the proposal will have to wait as Kenni gears up to solve the mystery.

I adore Kenni’s Poppa and how no one can see him but his daughter, After all, he is dead but is still around to help his pride and joy. I find it comforting that Kenni can still talk to him and rely on him to help her when needed. It makes the story very endearing and cleverly written.

When the person found dead is identified, Kenni knows she is in for an adventure. The wife has just come into the office to make a missing persons report, but had no idea that her husband has already been found. Who wanted Dilbert Thistle dead? One suspect starts to stand out when it is discovered that his ex wife had a protective order against him. Seems odd that she is filing a missing persons report on the person she has a protective order against.

With more twists than a curved road, the author had me glued to the story. Now I always think I can solve a mystery but I rarely do. My list of suspects had been narrowed down, yet I missed some significant subtle hints along the way. The case of Dilbert Thistle was more involved than I realized. With Kenni’s hands full she also has someone trying to undermine her. This certain person wants her job and sure becomes a pest. Oh wait there is one more thing. Does Kenni say yes to the proposal?

Marguerite Martin Gray is the author of Hold Me Close, Surround Me, and Bring Me Near– Revolutionary Faith Books One, Two and Three. Besides researching her historical novels, she enjoys studying history and writing fiction. An avid traveler and reader, she teaches French and has degrees in French, Spanish, and Journalism from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and a MA in English from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Marguerite is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, Abilene Writers Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution, South Carolina Historical Society, and Preservation Society of Charleston. She currently lives in North Louisiana with her husband and Cleo, her cat. Her two adult children keep her up to date and young.

I am so excited about being a part of this series. I have read all of the previous books and love having the collection on my shelf. I feel like I am traveling around my “home” with my characters, seeing all of the other islands and making new friends. Room for Love takes place on Alexandre Island just south of Laumua where the capitol and government are situated.
My husband and I traveled to Maui, experiencing the culture, food, sites, climate—the whole deal. My bucket list includes Bora Bora, but I couldn’t get my husband to splurge for a trip before writing this book. Yet, I have a hope to travel there one day.
For now, I’m relying on my experiences and research. The salty air and ocean offered awesome snorkeling and diving opportunities with the sea turtles and colorful fish. The humpback whales entertained us with their majestic beauty. Lorikeets and tropical birds serenaded from flowering treetops and sweet-smelling bushes and flowers.
Curvy roads in a convertible led us to cascading waterfalls and volcanoes. Many hours found us strolling on the beach or resting in hammocks. Needless to say, a week was not long enough.
I envisioned Alexandre Island as a perfect place for a B & B. We run three Airbnbs in Louisiana and really try to stay in others across the world when we can. Amy Lee, my heroine who owns the B & B, adds a wonderful breakfast and special authentic meals. On the property in an old barn, she, her staff, and friends offer an after-school program for local children.
Although tourism is a major source of island income, I realize and appreciate that the islanders have their own lives. I ask many questions of my characters to obtain a reality check about life on an exotic island. A little side note: I am a French teacher and have a strong love for the language, history, and culture surrounding these fictional islands.
I hope you enjoy the journey on all of the islands. Welcome to Alexandre.
MY REVIEW
Amy finds herself an empty nester after her son leaves for college. It has just been her and her son for a long time since the death of her husband. Now she is alone running a B&B figuring out what to do next. It is hard to see your child go off on their own, but Amy is proud of how her son has turned out. Now she must decide how to make her life full again and be happy with God’s plan for her life . Get ready for a fun adventure as we visit the beautiful Suamalie Islands. I know Amy is going to have an adventure and I can’t wait to follow her.
Walker Standish is ready for a break from teaching and has decided to treat himself to some relaxation and exploring on the Suamalie Islands. He is still struggling with the tragic loss of his wife and finds himself wanting to move forward but isn’t quite ready to let go. Maybe this vacation will help him with his grief. I can just imagine the breathtaking view of the islands and the rich history it has. You can sense that Walker is not looking for lasting friendships while on the island. He doesn’t want any attachments so he won’t have to experience loss.
Six months is a long time to be on the island but in this time Walker is hoping to discover hidden history and maybe find interesting facts about the islands. Amy is intrigued by him but wants to keep her distance for now. I love the cute little ways they seemed to communicate with each other. Oh this is going to be a fun adventure and I can just feel the many ways these two people will find just what God had planned for them. The excitement is felt throughout the story and I am right there with them. I’m spying from the sidelines and laughing as Any and Walker begin their journey.
This is a sweet and clean story about two mature adults who find themselves starting to let their hearts open up to a new relationship. Exploring the islands and becoming familiar with the food makes Walker come to appreciate his time in the tropical paradise. The trip to explore the history of the people were very intriguing and I loved how Walker and Amy began to sense that perhaps they could become more than friends. There is a nice faith thread throughout the story which guides our two main characters to seek God as they explore the future. I hope to see Any and Walker in another book in this series.

After three decades chained to a desk in corporate business, I didn’t expect to land here. But now, I’m an author with a debut novel! The road I traveled has been as circuitous as the ones my wife, Debbie, and I bicycled to cross America on our honeymoon. The author part makes sense: I exited corporate life with writing as a primary interest and at least one business book inside me. I also have a passion to share my faith. But a novel? From someone who hadn’t read them since high school?

I’ve since addressed my reading deficiency, but I would like to share with you how The Persistent Road came about.

Shortly after marrying in 2010, I joined Debbie as a hope coach to young people struggling with life. Our third bicycle odyssey, which we embarked on in 2014, was a fundraiser for the organization we volunteered for as coaches. No shortage of financial need there, and few people knew about the hidden gem of a service. Thus, TheHopeLine Tour came to be. We bicycled to our hearts’ content, blogged daily, and pitched our cause.

On day thirteen, things took an intense turn. A man in Richland, Oregon, spilled out his anger upon entering a restaurant. A religious sect at a campground the night before had cornered him with their preaching. We left that restaurant aghast. What had happened in the man’s life to make him so belligerent to matters of faith? The following day, we met him trying to pedal his heavy recumbent bicycle out of – all places – Hells Canyon.

We arrived home two months and three thousand miles later with a bevy of stories brimming with “God moments.” They breathed life into what would become Wheels of Wisdom. Yet that angry man’s screaming echoed in my mind. His unwitting cries for help became lesson 36 in our seeker’s devotional. I called it simply “Hells Canyon.”

My curiosity still wasn’t satisfied. What had happened to make this man react the way he did? And what became of him as he journeyed the perilous roads across America? The Persistent Road answers those questions!

I’ve since landed at another coaching service that welcomes all comers regardless of age. What I’ve learned as a coach and a long-distance traveler by bicycle saturates the pages of my novel. It’s just another example of God’s mysterious ways, of how He uses whatever He pours into us when we ride with Him.

MY REVIEW

If you are looking for a book that will encourage you, guide you toward Jesus and give you a new look at life, this is the one to get. The beginning sets the stage for a journey that takes readers through different states and lessons along the way. After Doug lost his wife to cancer he sets off on a bike ride that takes him far away from home. I enjoyed the little notes his wife left for him to open as he made each destination she mapped out to him.

Doug has lost everything and you can feel his bitterness at the world. What he thinks is a trip that his wife wanted him to find peace and joy became so much more. The breathtaking scenery is beautiful to read about as well as the trials he endured. I felt like I was beside him on my own bike as we rounded curves and took cover against a rain storm. Doug met interesting people along the way and found that faith was nearby each encounter.

He isn’t much on religion when he starts his trip but slowly he begins to open his heart to hear God’s Word. There are some sensitive subjects in the book that could be triggers for some, so be aware as you read the book. Along the way, I started to see wisdom coming through for my own life as I followed Doug. Being bitter gets you nowhere but more miserable. Forgiveness is a choice. When we choose to forgive, we open the door for our hearts to soften. Life is full of challenges and what we do when we face them will either guide us toward God or away from His protection.
