More from Linda

Dear Reader,

One of my favorite tropes to use in a story is the proverbial “fish out of water,” so when it came time for me to brainstorm the idea for Ellie’s Escape, I made a list of situations that would be uncomfortable for my protagonists (see what we writers do to our poor characters?).

As a result, I sent my female protagonist from the crowded city of Boston, Massachusetts (population 362,000) to the remote reaches of Gunnison, Colorado (population 888) where because of its location in the Rocky Mountains is one of the coldest places in winter in the United States. Compared to Boston’s elevation of 141’, Gunnison’s elevation of over 7,700 feet had to seem dizzying to my poor girl. The research into Gunnison was very fun, and I was able to use my boss as a subject matter expert because he’d lived there for several years before moving to New Hampshire. I gave my painfully shy male protagonist a gregarious mail-order bride that he doesn’t quite know what to do with.

Here are a few fun facts about Gunnison:

  • The Gunnison River drops an average of forty-three feet per mile through Black Canyon which is SIX times more than the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
  • Standing at 2,250 feet from river to rim, Black Canyon’s Painted Wall is the tallest cliff in Colorado, and nearly twice as tall as the Empire State Building.
  • The town is named for a man who only stayed for three days – explorer John W. Gunnison who was searching for a route for the transcontinental railroad.
  • A little-known site for gold and silver mining, Gunnison and the surrounding area produced a reported 130,000 ounces of gold.
  • Gunnison residents isolated themselves during the Spanish Influenza epidemic of 1918. All highways were barricaded near the county lines, and train conductors warned passengers that if they got off the train in Gunnison, they’d be arrested and quarantined for five days.

Comment and name a fun fact about where you live for your chance to win the grand prize.

Blessings,

Linda Shenton Matchett

MY REVIEW

I enjoy reading mail order bride stories because they are fascinating. It is hard to believe that a woman would travel to places where she knows no one and marry a stranger. During this time period it seemed to be very popular and many women signed up hoping to find the perfect husband.

Ellie is happy with her life being  a teacher and what some  refer to her as a spinster. It didn’t seem to matter to Ellie much what others thought of her. I liked how she has such a sweet spirit around  her. When  she  witnesses a bank robbery and sees the face of one of them, she quickly leaves town to hide from them. Looks like she is now going to be a mail order bride. Will she find true love?

Julian for some reason reminds me of a stuffy man who demands everything to be in proper order. Working at the bank he has a certain image to maintain. He must find a bride in order to impress the bank president. He is matched up with Ellie and thus our adventure begins.

I adored  how the author places these two people together and slowly allow them to get to know each other. Ellie is gifted with children and decides to help with the children at church. It was nice to see Julian stop by and help her out. Julian begins to have this desire to know God more and I loved how Ellie was there to encourage him.

Their friendship with the pastor and his wife are just what this couple need. They share how they met and how God helped them to have a more meaningful and loving marriage. The author uses scriptures to show what God says about marriage and how to have a deeper relationship with Him.

The story does have a little adventure at the end which I wasn’t expecting. It was a great illustration to show how God protects us and to trust Him in all situations. I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more from this author.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

If I could send you anywhere on vacation to relax, I’d send you to Wild Harbor. It’s the perfect spot to fall in love and raise a family–the type of town you’ll never want to leave once you visit.

A Wedding in Wild Harbor is set in this fictional town on Lake Michigan, a place where you can sink your toes in the sand, let the waves lull you to sleep, and marvel over the gorgeous sunsets.

I created the fictional town based off of the quaint small towns along Lake Michigan that look like they belong in a Hallmark movie. It’s the quintessential small town with meddling neighbors, quirky townsfolk, and a coffee shop where everyone knows you by name.

The Wild Harbor sweet romance series follows the stories of four siblings–three sisters and one brother–and their journey to find love. Each story is a standalone and they don’t have to be read in order, though characters reappear in each book.

I hope the sweet love story and charming town give you a needed escape from your fast-paced life.

MY REVIEW

This is a nice story that I enjoyed reading. I loved the  setting  of a quaint little town that promises rest, friendly people and beautiful scenery. Well almost all that  is true until someone swoops in to mess up Cassidy’s life. She loves working  at the bookstore and her special reading program for children. To her surprise the owners are selling the store and she needs to find a new place to work.

Liam isn’t exactly excited to be in town but he has just bought the bookstore and needs to decide what to do with it. He has a funny nickname which suits him most of the time. He and Cassidy have already met in an unpleasant situation so when she finds out he is the new owner of the shop, she isn’t thrilled.

There are a few triggers in the book for some such as cancer  and epilepsy. Liam’s mother is very ill and wants to see her son happy before she dies. The scheme Liam   and Cassidy come  up with certainly have flaws. I loved reading how these two try so hard to get along, but what gets in the way is trust. Cassidy learns something about Liam which upsets her. Just as they were starting to really like each other, she finds out that she can’t trust him. How do you build a relationship on lies and mistrust?

The author gives us a sweet  story with flawed characters. Their heart is in the right place, but they must learn to communicate and trust each other. When Cassidy’s ex shows up  he causes friction between our two main characters. The author does a good job of showing how important it is to not give up on your dreams.  It is also important to share your feelings before it is too late. Being stubborn causes Liam and Cassidy to have a big disagreement. Will they find happiness?

More from Olivia

I’ve always been drawn to English history and back in 2009, I was blessed to visit London with my daughter. We immersed ourselves in the area’s rich history by going to museums, visiting Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle, Temple Church, and so much more. Of course, a tour of the city wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to the Tower of London. There I learned about the tragic and short life of Lady Jane Grey, who was the queen of England for nine days.

Later that day, I found a postcard that displayed the famous painting, The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche. My mind started racing and the seeds for the Secrets of the Queens series took root. I wondered what would’ve happened if Lady Jane Grey had lived. A Life Reclaimed, the third book in the Secrets of the Queens, is not about Lady Jane Grey per se, but it follows the story of a young man whose life has been changed because of her escape from death.

I hope you enjoy my tale of mystery, intrigue, and love as much as I enjoyed writing it.

MY REVIEW

I loved how this story takes two very different people and put them together in an adventure that sweeps over sea and land.  We explore a bit of history as Queen Elizabeth makes a grand appearance in this enchanting story.Thomas is determined to find out what happened to his mother  and why he has been lied to all these years. The man he calls father is not  really  his father. He is out for revenge for something that happened to a special person in his life. We witness his downfall when he seems to be obsessed with jewels, gold and whatever makes him wealthy. He has no need to pray for he does not think it helps. When his life starts to unravel, he happens upon a young woman who may be what he needs to help him get rich. “Someday you will learn there are more precious things in this world besides gold and jewels.”

Anne is on the run from her stepfather who wants to force her to marry someone she does not love. Her stepfather is abusive to her and she seeks a place where she can be safe. I love her faith and how she continually prays over every situation. When she and Thomas run into each other she does question if he can be trusted. After all he is a thief and around  his neck adorns a stolen cross necklace with jewels that make it  very valuable. There are moments when their banter is funny and I loved how the author used this to let their guard down around each other.

As secrets are revealed we witness Thomas having a meltdown in front of everyone. He blames himself for all that has gone wrong at his home with his greed and bitterness. Will he come to understand that God can help him? Anne expresses her emotions with such heart wrenching words that Thomas begins to soften. I love this moment when Thomas begins to find strength to fight for his family and perhaps let the past go.

This story illustrates how  greed, secrets and pride can fracture a family. We see before  our eyes Thomas trying to sort out what has happened over  the  years to a family he once felt part of. As the story comes to an ending we witness that, “the truth shall set you free.”

THE SOUND OF LIGHT BY SARAH SUNDIN

When the Germans march into Denmark, Baron Henrik Ahlefeldt exchanges his nobility for anonymity, assuming a new identity so he can secretly row messages for the Danish Resistance across the waters to Sweden.

American physicist Dr. Else Jensen refuses to leave Copenhagen and abandon her research--her life's dream. While printing resistance newspapers, she hears stories of the movement's legendary
Havmand--the merman--and wonders if the mysterious and silent shipyard worker living in the same boardinghouse has something to hide.

When the Occupation cracks down on the Danes, these two passionate people will discover if there is more power in speech . . . or in silence. Bestselling author of more than a dozen WWII novels, Sarah Sundin offers pens another story of ordinary people responding to extraordinary circumstances with faith, fortitude, and hope for a brighter future.

MY REVIEW

This is a beautifully written story about WWII through the eyes of people who will capture the emotional struggle they go through. I loved how the author creates an image of what it was was like as our two main characters take a journey that fills the pages with faith, danger, war, evil and survival. I found it interesting that we get a closer look at the Dutch in this story. I don’t remember many stories that feature the Dutch and the author shows how in-depth  her research was as she brought these people to life.

Else impressed me with her intelligence and determination as an American living in a foreign land during this time  period. She is a physicist who has to prove  to others that  women can thrive in this field. When Else is asked to print flyers that could cause her to be put in danger, she decides to do it to contribute to the cause of getting Germany to leave. The tension is high as she has to be very careful not to get caught. With bravery I applauded her for standing up to the enemy.

Henrik is a character that you want to have on your side. He is strong, smart and does secret missions to deliver much needed information to Allies. I loved how he delivered the  messages via a row boat in the dark of night. He gets to know Else better as they are staying at the same boardinghouse. Henrik hides his real identity from everyone, but is someone suspicious of him?

The story is filled with twists in the  story as Else and Henrik  must keep one step ahead of the Gestpo. Their lives are in danger and the author keeps us on the edge of our seat as we watch two people face danger, develop feelings for each other and try to overcome the evil that tries to destroy them.

About the Author

Rachel Baxter has a professional background in engineering, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering, and an MBA.  Rachel currently works in the field of business process consulting with over 20 years of experience.

Rachel grew up in the Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, and married.  She was born again and spirit filled in 2014 when she received inner healing through a ministry called One Whole Heart in Omaha, Nebraska.  She now serves as an elder and volunteer for this ministry.  Rachel also serves her local church in various capacities.

Rachel is married to Garrick, and they have 4 children from elementary to high school age.  Rachel led a Christian school and homeschool coop called Valor for 5 years.  This was a missional spirit-led school where every day began with worship, and the children were taught to hear and follow the voice of the Lord, as Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice and follow me!” Rachel continues to have a heart for Kingdom youth education.

When she was baptized in the Holy Spirit, Rachel began to have dreams and visions from the Lord.  He began to speak with her about the days that are ahead, the time before   Jesus returns, so that she could write them down and release the prophetic words for those who were willing to hear.  Rachel has received several angelic visitations.  (A primary purpose of an angel is to be a messenger.) An angel of the Lord came to Rachel to tell her that she was, “Called to see that which was coming upon the Earth and to tell others what is coming.”  This book is an act of obedience to that call.

More from Rachel

It’s been a year since I co-labored with the Lord to write this work.  I have used it myself on a weekly basis as a reference.  There is so much insight here that is beyond me.  The Lord, in His glorious wisdom, is able to make the complicated and mysterious – clear and beautiful when He takes His truth and allows us to absorb it into our bones.  This is the essence of a revelation!  The Revelation of Israel is God’s story of His plans written before time began.  It starts with a people under Father Abraham who were meant to know their God.  Those people fell short in every way and were scattered across the earth.  We know that Jesus came to redeem God’s people to Himself through His atoning sacrifice – but the story of God does not end there.  God’s story has continued the last 2,000 years and is about to be fulfilled in the last seven years of tribulation on the earth that culminates with the return of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah at the last trump!

MY REVIEW

This book is not a fast read but one you should take your time going through. We have heard many times that Jesus is coming soon. Yet  I don’t think any of us can accurately say when that  will be. I do like how the author talks about different books in the Bible and goes step by step to help us understand what scripture is saying. The author does raise  questions that make us think. One question that  got my attention was ,”could it be that America isn’t  or at least included in, the Daughter of Babylon  referenced in Zechariah?” This is telling us that perhaps America is not following God just like the Daughter of Babylon did not follow God.

Reading through this book I was reminded of the  blessing and promises that God has made to His people. The author shows us prophets in the Bible and what  their prophecy was. I liked that the author took us deep into scripture and unwrapped it word  by word. What I find intriguing about books like this is that some people may not agree  with the author on every point made. It is an interpretation of scripture that the author uses which may not be the way others think it says. Overall the book has some keys points such as remembering that God’s Word does not come back void.
