someone to trust

About the Book

Book:  Someone to Trust

Author: Lesa Henderson

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Release date: January 26, 2021

9781611160321Megan McCormick doesn’t leave Atlanta looking for love. Far from it. She runs to the mountain town of Laurel Crest to flee from her past and a broken heart. When she’s knocked over by Lee Grainger, handsome veterinarian and lover of small-town living, Megan’s life takes an unexpected turn.

Tired of fast-paced city life, Lee is considering a permanent move to the mountains. His run-in with Megan has him believing he’s in Laurel Crest for more than a partnership in an animal hospital.

After a case of mistaken identity is cleared up, Megan and Lee strike up a friendship. Lee is everything Megan ever wanted—smart, loyal and dedicated to his faith. But Megan has experienced deep betrayal twice, and she’s reluctant to give romance another try.

Can Megan come to terms with the secret that haunts her, get past her distrust of men, and accept the love Lee offers or will her heart be broken again?

About the Author

lesahendersonLesa Henderson has been an avid reader since she first learned how to read and loves getting lost in the world the author creates. She’s been writing since the age of 10 and has since been published in many national magazines and is also a screenwriter. She lives in Florida with her husband Ken, their three children and a Schnauzer named Jackson.

More from Lesa

In Someone To Trust Megan McCormick (the heroine of the story) though very disciplined,  loves icing-filled, chocolate chip cookies.  I love the combination myself.  Especially butter-cream icing.   I’ll do an extra mile of running to have one.

She’s also a bit of a klutz and I drew some of her mishaps from my own unfortunate past episodes.  I’m a bit more graceful now but  definitely share some embarrassing incidents with Megan.   I’m also a screenwriter, so I did my best to relay Megan’s clumsiness, in a way hopefully that reader could easily see in their mind.

I wanted to tell a story of someone who was very broken by her father’s betrayal of her mother when she was a little girl.  Many of us have suffered father wounds that greatly impact us, even down the road in our lives.

As the story began forming  in my mind, I wondered what would happen if Megan became the very thing she despised her father for?  How would that impact her life?  Naturally, it would compound her distrust of men, as well as bring on self-loathing.

Of course this brought up the issue of forgiveness.  Not only the ability to forgive those who have hurt us but also the grace to forgive ourselves.

This is something Megan needs to learn.  Although, she is beautiful and caring,  her heart is cloaked in bitterness and she’s running from her past.  And we all know, sometimes our past comes back to haunt us when we least expect it.

MY REVIEW

This has been a very emotional read for me. I immediately liked Megan. Running from her past she finds herself in a wonderful little town. The beautiful but simple cabin she bought was very inviting. Maybe she could find a way to start over and find peace with in herself. It was nice getting to see her story unravel slowly as the author opens her past  one step at a time. I was able to understand why Megan couldn’t trust and knew she needed to deal with her past. She was easy to relate to because like her we probably all have something from our past  we are ashamed of.

Lee is a wonderful character with a heart of gold. He is honest, caring and loves God. I liked  that he was a vet and dedicated his life to helping animals. One of the highlights of the book was being introduced to Sir. What a big lovable dog he is. The only thing that bothered me about his part in the story was I never found out how he got hurt. I wanted to know who was so mean that they would hurt an innocent animal.

Lee and Megan start slowly getting to know each other. They both have things in their past that keep them from sharing their feelings for each other. Abandonment, trust issues and lies will come between this couple. The story was very well written and I loved witnessing the change in Megan especially. The past always has a way of catching up with us. The author delivers a journey through forgiveness that helps the characters find peace. There is no greater gift than to give your heart to Jesus and I was overjoyed reading how a certain character found their way to not only forgive but to trust and find  love.

Read an Excerpt

“Faith was a single mother in her late twenties. Very pretty. Upbeat personality. She was well liked by most people. Faith was also a devout Christian. She shared her faith constantly like seeds in the wind. She worked in an office in the building where I leased space.

It was late in 2005 that Faith developed a physical problem in her mouth. Her dentist removed the right upper wisdom tooth, but the wound did not heal. She had been seeing the dentist for weeks. He would debride the wound and cover it. Then she would go back for more debriding. The painful, dime-sized wound refused to heal. After six weeks of conservative care, her dentist told her the hole would not close on its own. She would need surgery, so he made the referral.

This was the day she told me about the problem. She was visiting in our office just at closing. She pulled out a pocket flashlight and showed me her gum. What I saw was a lesion about the size of a dime and deep. I could see white uncovered bone, but the wound was clean. There was no dead or infected tissue. I didn’t know why with the care she was getting the wound had not healed.

In a purely social way, I told her that I hoped all would go well with her and proceeded to exit the building. It was already getting dark. The winter sun went down early. That day had been a particularly long one. I was tired. My coat was on my body, my purse on my shoulder, and my briefcase in my hand. I was done. I pushed open the heavy glass door and walked toward my car. Next stop, home. No sooner did I get outside the building than I heard the Spirit of the Lord speak to my heart: “Are you my servant or aren’t you?”

I was so tired. I didn’t want to go back into the building. I wanted to go home. I had a short discussion with myself, turned around, and went back to find Faith. Fortunately, she was right where I had left her. She had found someone else to talk to. I asked her if she would be offended if I said a brief prayer for her and applied the oil. “No, that would be wonderful,” she said.

I returned to my office, retrieved a drop of oil that had been blessed, and placed it on her face near the wound inside her mouth. I put my hand on her shoulder and prayed a very short but sincere prayer in the name of Jesus. I still had my coat on, so I shouldered my bag, picked up my briefcase, and left.

I was interrupted in my morning schedule by my office manager. She told me Faith had been healed. My whole office was excited. Faith was jumping up and down. The hole in her gum was gone. She was still carrying her flashlight, so I could see where it had been. There was nothing in her mouth but clean, well-healed skin. It couldn’t have healed like that overnight. Faith’s dentist didn’t believe it either, so she took time that day to show him. He, too, was amazed.

There is no medical explanation. I give the glory to the Lord Jesus, our Savior.”

Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!

Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

Psalm 47:1

MY REVIEW

This is a nice book that gives us hope as each story is encouraging . I enjoyed reading about the different patients and the healing they encountered. We may get bad news from a doctor and  start to have doubts but this book will give us a glimpse into the miracles that God has done. The world around us says we can’t be healed. Within these pages we find people that overcame devastation in their health.

I like that the  author emphasizes the importance and power of prayer. One story really made me smile. It was about a ninety-two year old woman who needed to have eye surgery. I could feel her sweet spirit as the doctor met with her. What really was significant to me about this story was that the doctor listened to the Holy  Spirit and anointed the elderly woman with oil as she prayed over her. What a wonderful testimony to have her sight restored without surgery.

Each chapter is filled with a story that features someone who face challenges in their health. For some of them they are facing the end and there seemed to be little hope. As I read the book I began to feel a sense of peace as God was working miracles in peoples lives. Doctors couldn’t explain how tumors disappeared or how someone was able to walk who had been paralyzed. This is the kind of book that makes me want to cheer. God doesn’t leave us and He knows exactly what the outcome will be. I liked that the author included a scripture at the end of  every chapter. It is a short read but sure does give you hope as you read stories that show that miracles do happen.

About the Author

Judy DuCharme grew up with Lake Huron next to her back yard and has always loved the water. She, her husband, daughter, and son moved to Door County in 1984. After teaching 5th Grade at Gibraltar School for 22 years, Judy followed the calling that tugged at her all her life to write. Lainey of the Door Islands is her 7th published book and she is the recipient of numerous awards. She also writes for Guideposts Magazine. If you visit Door County, you may find her hiking in the woods, jet skiing on the bay, worshipping at her church, teaching a Bible study, cheering for the Green Bay Packers, playing with her amazing grandson, or sitting outside enjoying the beauty around her.

More from Judy

Door County, where I live, is the destination of 3 million people in the summer and fall. Lainey of the Door Islands, my seventh published book, is the culmination of my desire to write a book about this wonderful area where I live. Tourists and residents alike love all things Door County, past and present. One day as I traveled on the ferry between Washington Island and the mainland of Door County and gazed out at tiny Pilot Island, I said again to myself, ‘I need to write a book about Door County’. I don’t recall if it was that day, the next, or two days later, but the story dropped into my spirit. I sat down at my computer and wrote well into the second chapter in one sitting. I said to my husband, “I’m writing and I can’t stop.”

MY REVIEW

This is a nice story set in the late 1800s where times were tough for most people. The jobs didn’t pay well so they had to use their supplies sparingly. I loved learning about lighthouses and the hard work it goes into running one. Ships depended on the lighthouse keeper to guide them to safety. The author does a good job of helping us visualize shipwrecks and the dangers of the sea.

Our star character Lainey is a sweet young girl who has experienced great loss in her young life. We are taken on a journey as Lainey matures and becomes a young woman who experiences her first crush. I laughed remembering mine as well. The butterflies you feel and the smile you can’t erase from your face is hard to hide. I was sad when Lainey had to leave her uncle and aunt. They did make the right decision I think because they wanted the best for Lainey.

I loved reading how Lainey adjusted to her new family and how much  she felt loved. Her confidence was building as she began to relax in her new surroundings.  Lainey will always think fondly of her time with her aunt and uncle but God is leading her in a new direction. Clifford is just right for Lainey and  there is a funny moment in the story that made me laugh out loud. All I will say is that is involves chickens. The story is a wonderful look at trusting God, following His direction for your life and finding happiness.

Chased

About the Book

Book:  Chased

Author: M. Liz Boyle

Genre: Christian Y.A.

Release date: June 1, 2020

Ebook Chased Cover JPGIt’s been a year since Marlee, her sisters, and the Miles boys survived an avalanche. Sure, it was a little embarrassing for them when all the neighbors saw them on the news, but they love being outdoors, and what are the odds that another tragedy would strike this adventurous group? Has anyone calculated the statistics of being hit with two natural disasters? It has to be low, so of course the two families planned to backpack again this summer.

When the teens first meet Thad, a dehydrated hiker on the trail, they give him water and food and help him recover. He seems harmless until he tells them to hike a few extra miles at sunset. Then Lydie finds a hand-drawn map that Thad dropped, and they discover why he is so eager to get away from the Stanley girls and Miles boys. So eager that he starts chasing them.

Now they have to climb up unforgiving ridges, sneak through the night, and – is that thunder and lightning? To make matters worse, Marlee has a nagging worry that her older sister Ellie is preparing to move away from home.

What is God’s plan? How will they get away from Thad before it’s too late?

About the Author

Liz looking to sideLiz is the author of the Off the Itinerary series, the wife of a professional tree climber and the homeschooling mom of three energetic and laundry-producing children. She received her Associate’s of Arts at the University of Sioux Falls, where she received the LAR Writing Award for her essay entitled, “My Real Life Mufasa.” Liz once spent a summer in Colorado teaching rock climbing, which she believes was a fantastic way to make money and memories. She resides with her family in Wisconsin, where they enjoy hiking and rock climbing. Liz and her husband have also backpacked in Colorado and the Grand Canyon, which have provided inspiration for her writing. She likes making adventurous stories to encourage others to find adventures and expand their comfort zones (though admittedly, she still needs lots of practice expanding her own comfort zone).

More from Liz

Five years ago my husband Dustin and I took a dream-come-true trip to the Grand Canyon. On the first day we hiked to the bottom of the Cathedral Staircase. To picture the Cathedral Staircase, think of the longest set of stone stairs in the world, double it, and put it in a (scenic) pizza oven. Oh, and strap a 50-pound bag to your back. It was there in the sun that we met a young couple who was sorely unprepared for the elements of the Canyon. The young lady had signs of heat exhaustion, and the guy didn’t have a clue what to do. Thankfully our group was able to help them and call backcountry rangers to get the couple to safety. The situation was eye-opening on many levels. After the shock of witnessing such a close call settled down, my creative side saw the experience as inspiration for Avalanche’s sequel. Except in my book Chased, I added a plot twist. When the dehydrated hiker recovers, he becomes a threat to the very people who saved his life. I had a blast writing Chased, and I hope you enjoy the adventure, too!

MY REVIEW

I think I like this book better than the first one. The characters are more defined and I feel more invested in them. Even though you could probably read this book without reading the first I highly recommend reading the first one. It introduces the group of hikers and their relationship to each other.

In this story we find  our five hikers in the Montana mountains. When I was younger I remember a road trip my family took through Montana. It was a majestic view but I was terrified at how high we were in our little station wagon. The road was very narrow and I thought we would fall off anytime. The author describes the mountains so vividly that I can still see the landscape from many years ago.

Without going into much detail I loved the plot of being hunted by a young man who would do anything to protect the treasure he was looking for in the rugged terrain. The hikers do run into him and help him out when he becomes dehydrated. That fateful encounter will prove to be a cat and mouse game as danger follows them on their hike. Thad was a strange character that had only one thing on his mind. He did kinda give me the creeps and I kept screaming at  the teens to run as fast as they could.

We get to hear secrets shared between friends and siblings that I thought showed the maturity of all of them. There is a strong faith element in the story and it was refreshing to see them praying and trusting God to keep them safe. I am looking forward to reading  the next book in this series and know that it will be an adventure faith filled story just like these last two have been.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
