MY REVIEW

This is one story I didn’t want to see  end. It  flowed so easily yet had layers of secrets, pain, unforgiveness and second chances that took effort to rip open. Each character complimented the other whether by sadness or hope. Emily was a woman who ran from her problems. It was easy to not commit to anything for her. All her life she has found it easy to guard her heart and run the second she felt anything . There is so much pain inside her that I knew someday she would come face to face with her past. I appreciate how the author showed us how people can turn away from God and blame Him for everything. Emily has had this anger towards God because she feels like He abandoned her.

Hollis is not hard to figure out. He has made mistakes but he has never forgotten a certain person who he has always loved. Finding Emily back in Nantucket will change his life and allow him to face his feelings of failure.  Two people each coming face to face with their past brings readers a story that shows second chances can happen. Does everyone deserve a second chance? The easy way to answer that is to remind ourselves what Jesus did for us.

This is a powerful story that at times made me cry. I wanted to help Emily through her pain. I wanted to sit beside her as she read letters from her mother. What Emily really needed was to feel the love of God. He had never abandoned her yet she continued to feel alone.

I loved how the author went back in time to let  us glimpse into Isabelle’s life. I loved reading about her relationship with her parents and how much she loved with her whole heart. Her letters allude to having her heart broken and encouraging her daughter to always be cautious of love.

The author provides readers with a story that gives hope to those who feel lost and alone. It brings us an understanding of second chances and the power of unconditional love. Above all it shows how God never leaves us.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

3 Bits of Wisdom Every Mother Hopes Her Daughter Cherishes
By Courtney Walsh

There are so many types of mother-daughter relationships, and I’ve discovered that in most of my novels, these relationships are explored in one way or another. My most recent book, If For Any Reason, delves a little deeper into this universal relationship, as the main character’s only connection to her late mother is a book of letters she left behind for daughter when she died.

It was interesting to think through the advice and wisdom I would want to be sure to share with my own daughter, if for any reason I wasn’t here to share it in person. There’s so much I would want to say, so many lessons I would want to share, but if I had to boil it down to three bits of wisdom, I think it would be these:

Ask for help when you need it.

I’m not sure why it’s so difficult to admit we need help sometimes, but in the past year and a half, my family has faced some pretty significant medical challenges, and I learned that it’s necessary to let other people help you. One of the quickest ways to burn out and get overwhelmed is to try to do everything on your own. Now, I’m not talking about laziness. I’m not talking about figuring out ways to get other people to do things for you that you don’t want to do, but genuine help in this journey of life—spiritually, mentally, physically—all the ways that you need to be strong and healthy. You were never meant to figure everything out on your own. And it’s less lonely when you let people in.

Mistakes are good . . . as long as you learn from them.

Okay, it’s inevitable. You’re going to mess up. You’re going to make a million mistakes and sometimes you’re going to really, really regret them. It’s okay. It’s okay to make the wrong choice now and then . . . but only if you learn from it. Because even though there’s a lot of grace for your mistakes, there are still consequences, and if you’re not willing to learn what you did wrong, you’re just going to keep making a mess of things. Don’t do that. Don’t be stubborn and unmoving. There are opportunities to learn something new every single day, and there are people all around you who can help teach you—but only if you humble yourself, realize you don’t know everything, and are willing to learn. Remaining teachable is one of the greatest things you can do. Learn this lesson early, and you’ll go far.

Be yourself.

This is one of the most important and most challenging lessons any of us could learn. It’s a platitude, isn’t it? Advice you’d find on the outside of a coffee mug or embroidered on a throw pillow. But it’s more than that, this whole idea of being who you are, who God created you to be. Here’s the tricky part—how do you know who that is? The only way I can tell is to spend time with yourself. And to not be afraid to sit in the quiet with your thoughts. Learn what God says about you so that if those ideas are challenged or someone else tries to put a label on you that you don’t want, you’re armed with the truth. This will serve you well as you work to discover who you are.

The truth is, as a mother, I’m constantly learning. As a person, I’m constantly learning. And while these are just three bits of wisdom I hope my daughter carries with her, there are so many other lessons I hope she learns, lessons I hope I can teach her so she doesn’t need to learn the hard way.

What about you? What’s one bit of wisdom you want to be sure to pass along to the next generation?

MY REVIEW
Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Hawaiian Islands is a murder mystery that has our main characters scrambling to find answers. I enjoyed the description of Hawaii and all the exciting points of interest for tourist to visit. The author makes it easy to visualize the setting and I have high hopes of visiting Hawaii someday. That would involve a plane ride which I’m not a big fan of.
Most of the story centers around the upcoming wedding of Jo Oliver. You can feel the anticipation in Jo as the big day gets closer. I liked how the author gives hints of what is to come by mysterious looks from a man and rumors of women disappearing. I suppose you are always on the job if you are a police officer as Jo finds herself investigating a murder. It was pretty easy to figure out who the killer was but I still liked reading how the author unravels his guilt.
The story does have a few surprises and has faith lightly scattered throughout the story. It is not an overly complicated story but one that is enjoyable to read without graphic details. When the groom shows up on  the island, the action starts to peak. Will Jo and Nick get to enjoy their honeymoon or will the mysterious deaths overshadow their wedding?
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Catherine

In writing my Jo Oliver Thriller series, I find myself driven by passion. The genesis of the series—Cleansed By Death—was fueled by a passion to create a story about strong women embedded in a male-dominated profession, facing difficulties they could only solve through faith and community. I was vacuuming when I was hit by the idea of pitting two strong women against each other and seeing which one would win, the theme of book 2, Shattered by Death. Information gleaned during an FBI writers workshop on techniques for tracking criminals, superimposed over the mitten map of Wisconsin formed the bones for Anchored By Death, the third book in the series.
My latest novel, Capsized By Death, contains all of my favorite elements. The astute series reader will note that the foundation for the killer’s appearance in this book was introduced years ago in Cleansed By Death. But he first appeared to me during one of my many solo writing vacations on an island.
At the end of a fairytale day spent kayaking, snorkeling and listening to the sound of whales singing under water in Maui, the gorgeous male host of my day trip stood silhouetted in the setting sun. This man was beautiful in every way, and had the sort of personality that describes the essence of attractive—he pulled you into his beautiful ocean world. At that moment, I knew I had found my perfect killer for my next book! It became my goal to create a killer who was beautiful on the outside and evil on the inside. I used the New Testament book of Jude as my guide for the internal workings of my killer and thus the skeletal framework for Jude, my killer in Capsized By Death—book 4 of the Jo Oliver Thriller series—was born.

MY REVIEW
Right away I noticed something very important about this book. One of the characters say, “When you love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and spirit, the Good Book says you reflect the Savior’s Light on the world, which pushes back the Darkness.”It is a great statement to remind us that we can overcome the darkness when we surrender everything to God. We don’t have to fear anything because God in us has overcome darkness. Oh I’m so excited to read this book and share my thoughts .

I loved how the children worked together as their  parents turn up missing. Strange things are going on around them but they take their responsibilities serious. The author does a great job of writing a book that is filled with whimsical animals , fighting off the darkness and presenting Biblical references that shine the light on God.

When the author mentioned the song, “This Little  Light of Mine ,” I was immediately reminded of all the times I sang that song in Sunday school growing up. Today that song has such a deeper meaning for me. God wants us to shine light where darkness lingers. He wants us to to be the light that encourages others and shares His truth with others. The book is an excellent example of three young children shining light and trusting God.

The children encounter danger and I liked how the author uses examples that help readers of all ages understand dark vs light. It is a great book that have lessons on trust, faith and standing up against the enemy. I think this would make a great TV show for children.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Allen

When my kids were young there was really nothing better than getting out of my car at the end of a long day at work and having my three little kiddos run up to me and give hugs because Daddy’s Home!  As a Father of three young children I was very concerned about the direction society was taking.  I wasn’t sure that with how things were going that I had the knowledge or the skill to train them up in the way they should go, as the Bible directs.
Then in 2008 I took a new job that had me traveling four days a week.  It was one of the hardest times of my life, the stress of a high pressure job, the loneliness of being on the road, and uncertainty of being a young parent really brought me to the end of myself.  However, all of the travel gave me a lot of time to study the scriptures and learn from the writing of great bible teachers.
It was during this time that I began to write stories for my children.  At first I brought my children’s stuffed animals to life for silly adventures.  But then one day while we were putting together a play fort in our back yard I saw a sunrise pattern in the wood in the top of the tower.  I thought:
“What if there was a Tower of Light shining God’s goodness over the children and their animals?”
“What if the children experienced the indwelling of the holy spirit in a real way like Sampson or David?”
“What if the full armor of God was physical armor they could use to defeat the darkness?”
As I shared my story with my children, they loved it.
I believe you and your children will love it too.
