About the Author

Jennifer Sienes holds a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in education, but discovered life-experience is the best teacher. She loves Jesus, romance and writing—and puts it altogether in inspirational contemporary fiction. Her daughter’s TBI and brother’s suicide inspired two of her three novels. Although fiction writing is her real love, she’s had several non-fiction pieces published in anthologies including several in Chicken Soup for the Soul. She has two grown children and one very spoiled Maltese. California born and raised, she recently took a step of faith with her real-life hero and relocated to Tennessee.

More from Jennifer

As a fiction author, the characters I create become as close as friends by the time my novels are complete. Maybe it’s because I spend weeks delving into their personality traits, emotional wounds, and spiritual needs. My husband recently asked me if I ever get them confused with each other. A good question, since the list grows with every story I write, but the answer was a definitive no. There is no one, except my husband, I interact with more while I’m writing a novel than my characters.

Have you ever noticed some friends are with you for only a season or two? This could be unique to me, but those I’m closest to are those who are connected by mutual experiences. When my children were young, I was the community 4-H leader, so I was surrounded by other parents with small children. Later, when I completed my degree and started teaching, it was other teachers I hung out with. Now, it’s church family or fellow writers. As we move through our lives, some of those friends dissipate as if from a long-ago dream forgotten in the light of day. The same is true for my characters.

When my publisher asked me to write a Christmas novella, I jumped at the chance to revisit my old friends Julia and Marty from Surrendered, Book 1 in my Apple Hill Series. Although they didn’t take center stage in the novel, they played a significant role in the lives of main characters Tess and Jake. I purposely left their stories unfinished and let my readers draw their own conclusions. But it appears Julia and Marty weren’t satisfied with that ending. Another example of my characters taking on a life of their own.

All That Glitters was a pleasure to write, although visions of all things Christmas were a challenge in the heat of summer. It was like hanging out with old friends for a short time. I hope you enjoy your visit with Julia and Marty, whether it’s your first introduction to them or you previously met them in Surrendered.

MY REVIEW

This is a short book but it has a powerful message in it. I loved that the story was set around Christmas time. I could tell you how much I loved the characters and all about the story, but I won’t. I want readers to know that this story is about relationships. We have one character who needs to repair her relationship with her parents and another who needs to have a relationship with Jesus. The author does a good job of giving us a character who is compassionate, loves Jesus and wants to help others.

There is a little mystery in the story when someone disappears without letting  anyone know why  or where he went. I had a suspicion what he was involved in. We seem to run away from our problems thinking they will go away. I liked how the author talks about divorce and how it affects children. Children need stability and the love of both parents. One of the things I really liked was how the author shows us that forgiving others helps us to open our hearts to a new beginning.

The story is a wonderful example of trusting, forgiving and the importance of family. I have to say I would love a follow up story to see how two special characters have grown in their relationship with each other. Don’t miss this feel good story that has all the makings of a Hallmark movie.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Book

Book: Her Merriweather Hero

Author: Rachel Skatvold

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Release Date: October 27, 2020

He just wanted a place to rest and recuperate.

She only needed a repairman to help fix up her beach house.

For marine sergeant, Tyler Banner, nothing could be further from the memories of his time in Iraq than the slow, easy pace on Merriweather Island. Taking up a job as a physical trainer serves to keep him in shape while he enjoys a little downtime. Making friends with the local vet—veterinarian, that is—on his morning jog is just a bonus.

When Kendall’s sister tricked her into recruiting Tyler’s help one day, she didn’t fortify herself against a breach to her heart. Making friends with the marine was easy, but helping him overcome the PTSD that holds him captive isn’t. As she picks her way across a minefield of memories and horrors Tyler endured, Kendall begins to hope he could be the man she’s prayed for.

Falling in love wasn’t in Tyler’s orders, but a new deployment to Iraq is. How can he convince Kendall not to go AWOL when she hears? What can he do to convince her that they’ll make it… together?

This “Merriweather book” is the fourth in a new series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

More from Rachel

Her Merriweather Hero has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding stories I have written. Often when I am starting a new book, I immerse myself in the world-building process, which involves a lot of research and notetaking. This time around, I had the amazing opportunity to work with Celebrate Lit and the authors in the Independence Islands Series to map out these beautiful island stories. It has been an exciting journey so far.

This story was inspired by my parents who met through letters while my dad was in the Marine Corps. They both came from different backgrounds, with my mom being from Massachusetts and my dad from a small town in Iowa, but their differences didn’t stop them from falling in love. For Her Merriweather Hero, I used themes of opposites attracting, New England, and the Marine Corps from my parent’s love story.

Kendall is a young veterinarian who moves to the Independence Islands with her sister to start a new mobile clinic. There, she meets Sergeant Tyler Banner who is on medical leave after a tour overseas. She tries to avoid Tyler at first, determined to concentrate on making her business a success, but over time she can’t ignore the handsome military guy who keeps ‘accidently’ crossing her path. It doesn’t help he lives a few doors down from her fixer-upper beach house. Can she continue to try to ignore him or is it true that opposites attract?

This romantic island tale is also inspired by the verses from Hebrews 6:18-19 which describe God as our anchor. The characters feel tossed around by waves of difficulties at certain parts of the story, but He is always the anchor who keeps them secured.

MY REVIEW

I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying this series. Is it too much to ask for this place to be real? I want to live on the island and feel the breeze on my face. It would be nice to walk on the beach and hear the waves crash against the rocks. Each book in this series can be read alone, but I highly no insist that you read all of them. Some  characters do make appearances in others books which make you feel like seeing family again.

This story focuses  on two sisters who decide to come to the island and start a mobile vet clinic. Oh how I loved reading how the sisters had little spats but always seemed to find their way to forgive each other. Kendall is the oldest and has hopes that her sister will not back out of being her assistant at the clinic. There are some funny moments in the story when they first  see the house that Kendall bought sight unseen. It is definitely a fixer upper and I chuckled when they realized how much work it needed.

Kendall’s sister sure can be stubborn at times. She still has trouble attending church after something happens that makes her angry at God. Just being  on the island with Kendall may help her renew her relationship with God. One thing I really liked about her was how much she wanted to help Kendall grow her business. It is a great example  of family working together and encouraging each other.

Tyler is my favorite character because he is kindhearted and willing to help others. I appreciated the author highlighting him as a marine. Seeing his friend pay the ultimate sacrifice makes him feel guilty. He doesn’t  focus on his own injury but instead helps out his sister who was married to his best friend. I liked how the author talks  about PTSD and shows how Tyler still needs to seek counseling to help him.

Guilt and fear seem to be a theme in this story. Some feel guilt over a loss while others fear of being hurt. The faith element is very good in the story and mentions several scriptures about these subjects. God doesn’t want us to live in fear. He wants us to trust Him and allow him to heal the pain and hurt we carry around. It’s a good story where love grows between two people. It won’t be easy for them but they will need to give God their burdens and let Him work out whatever obstacles they face. I loved how they Kendall  tells   Tyler  she will wait for him to return . I want to say thank you to all  who have served and still serve for our country. We appreciate your sacrifice to keep this nation safe from the enemy. I am hoping at some point in the series we catch up with Kendall and Tyler because I don’t feel like their story was complete.

About the Book

Book: The Gene

Author: Timothy Browne

Genre: Medical Thriller

Release Date: July 12, 2020

We are the dwelling place of God—it is woven into our very DNA. Do we change the core of who we are by manipulating our genes? Is gene-therapy a miraculous cure or a slippery slope into eugenics?

Following their marriage, Dr. Nicklaus Hart and Maggie Russell enjoy the splendor and passion of a honeymoon in Hawaii. They learn that their union has brought new life, but the overflowing joy of Maggie’s pregnancy and their romantic getaway is interrupted by the shocking news of a genetic disorder discovered in Maggie’s family lineage. The devastating possibility that both Maggie and the baby carry the mutated gene for the horrific Huntington’s disease, shakes their faith.

Faced with this dreadful diagnosis, Nick and Maggie seek peace as they wrestle with the heartbreaking discovery of a genetic disease versus the knowledge that God is good—He has made their baby in His image and knit him together in Maggie’s womb. Like the millions of people around the world affected with genetic disorders, Nick and Maggie look for answers. With the belief that people are the dwelling place of God, and He is woven into the DNA, what should they do when that DNA has been corrupted?

Nick and Maggie travel to Poland, where the top geneticist, Emmanuelle Christianson, has founded and operates BioGenics whose mission statement is: Advancing the Human Genome. They understand that medical advances always cost something, but they face impossible decisions. They are unaware that the sinister side of genetic research has slithered in from the horrors of Nazi death camps into this modern-day technology. Their journey reveals more than the fight for knowledge, it uncovers a simmering evil left over from World War II. One that puts their lives in danger.

More from Timothy

Christian Fiction that will get your heart pounding!

After finishing, The Gene, the fourth book in the Dr. Nicklaus Hart Series, I have been able to look back at this body of work. The heart of my prose remains the same: to entertain and educate—fueled with imagination, inspired by history, and grounded in truth. I explored the mystery of North Korea and the threat of bioterrorism in Maya Hope, the complexities of the middle East and the history of Mesopotamia in The Tree of Life, the controversies of Big Pharma and our health in The Rusted Scalpel, and now examine the history of eugenics and the pitfalls of gene-therapy in The Gene.

Writing The Gene has taken significant research: exploration of Poland, investigation of the Nazi doctors and their horrendous medical experiments, the history of eugenics around the world, and of course, the science of genetics. The work has been satisfying, edifying, and many times, heartbreaking.

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed the concept of this book but there are a few things I need to touch on first. I really wish the language was toned down a lot. There were words and phrases used that I didn’t care for and think if they were taken out, it would have made the story easier to read. The other topic is somewhat uncomfortable for me. At the beginning of the book we are a witness to a horrible attack on a young woman. It was a bit graphic and the author could have left some parts out. There were some intimacy scenes  by several characters that for me was too detailed.

Now for the things I loved. I found the storyline to be exception. Science has come along way and it is not to far fetched to think that doctors can do techniques that may change and manipulate our body. I can say that it was scary to think there is a group out there who wanted to once again have a certain type of person that  would all begin to look the same. The author does go into detail about DNA and although it was lengthy at times, I still was intrigued. You can tell that the author has done extensive research by the details he inserts in the story.

Maggie and Nick are excited that she is pregnant until they get upsetting news. A genetic disease has been detected in Maggie and the chances of her unborn child carrying the same gene is highly possible. Their trip to Poland to visit a geneticist gives them hope . I liked learning about the history of Poland and the people who lived there. BioGenics is highly regarded as a place where technology is on the cusp of changing the outcome of diseases and other genetic deformities. I was very surprised by how the story was linked back to World War II.

As I read the story I wondered if we are sometimes manipulating God’s creations. It was hard for Maggie to decide if the risk was too great as she was explained the procedure that could cure her and her baby. I did like that there was a faith element in the story. The story is packed with suspense and a series of events that could change the lives of many. I did enjoy the writing and have decided that I want to read the other books in this series. Medical thrillers get my adrenaline pumping and I love seeing where the author takes us in the world of medicine.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Amid the flying sparks, can Henry and Leesa see that there might be hope and love in this unexpected situation?

MY REVIEW

I love books where authors come together and give readers a collection of stories packed in one book. These stories are entertaining   and allows us to visit the Amish during holiday times. Each story is a stand alone yet each author made their story flow easily into the next.  . Enjoy your time getting into the holiday spirit.

Evergreen Love byAmy Clipston

What a great story about second chances. It was sad that Lorene and Ryan ended their engagement. I think Lorene didn’t really give Ryan time to explain why he kept putting off building  a house for them. We sometimes make  rash decisions in the heat of our emotions and regret them later.

I couldn’t wait to see what would happen when Ryan returns after being away for several years. Lorene learns a valuable lesson in sharing her feelings and allowing Ryan to finally open up to her. There is something special about weddings. Lorene and Ryan experience some awkward moments but God had a plan for them. It is a wonderful and sweet story of family, forgiveness and finding happiness.

Holiday of Hope by Kelly Irvin

Oh my did this story tug at my heart. Can I just give Tommy a big hug? The pain of feeling all alone in the world is hard for Tommy. Now after losing the last person he cared for he is shuffled off to live with Henry. This child need some compassion, guidance and someone who cares about him. It was sad to read that Tommy doesn’t believe in God anymore. I can understand how hurt he is by losing family members. Sometimes we are mad at God because we don’t understand why bad things happen.

With the help of Leesa and Henry,  maybe Tommy will let down his guard. Leesa is such a sweet character. You can tell right away that she cares about other people. I loved reading how Tommy slowly began to change and allow God to work on his heart. The Christmas program was fun to read about and I could tell Tommy was happy to be part of it.

“God has a way of leading us to water, doesn’t He? Now you just have to drink.”

Wreathed in Love by Kathleen Fuller

How fun it must be to have a wedding at Christmastime. The decorations are beautiful and families  gather to share happiness and the holiday season.  I couldn’t wait to see how the author would use this wedding to get two people back together. Mary and Jakob use to date but that ended a year ago. Now they find themselves spending time together helping Mary’s friend with her wedding. I would love to attend an Amish wedding someday.

I really liked how the story talks about friendship and helping others out. Mary has to rely on Jakob to help her with baking obligations when she is injured. It’s the perfect setup for these two to rekindle their friendship and perhaps more.  The author delivers a wonderful story about trusting . It can be hard sometimes to let out guard down and allow  someone  in. Mary is a great example of learning to trust God with her feelings and giving  Jakob the chance to try to repair their relationship.

A Christmas  Prayer by Vannetta Chapman

There are so many things I loved about this story. I loved that it focused on older adults, a dog that stole my heart and finding love. It was nice to be part of the tour as Rachel opens her home up to tourist. She answered questions from them and I loved how she did it with grace. I learned that when Amish make quilts, they put a mistake in them to keep them humble. The answer Rachel gave about the Amish being a cult made me understand them better. They only worship God, not a person like a cult does.

Now on to the fun part of the story. Rachel is lonely and not excited to spend Christmas alone. How sad it was to learn that Rachel never married.   Rachel’s friend Micah  comes over with an injured dog hoping she will take the dog. After all Rachel is alone and the dog needs someone to nurse back to health. I laughed when Rachel said no as the dog’s big sad eyes looked at her.

There are a few surprises which really made the story  more interesting. Micah and Rachel seem to slowly become more comfortable around  each other and I was cheering for them to have the best Christmas ever. Prayers are powerful and in this story it shows that God does answer prays. He may not answer them as soon as we want but He has a plan for our lives. I would love to see a follow up story with Micah and Rachel because they are special people who represent that no matter how old you are, you can find love in God’s timing.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and reading my review of this wonderful example of what  Christmas is about. Blessing to you and your family during this holiday season.
