About the Author

E.C. Jackson began her writing career with the full-length play Pajama Party. For three and a half years she published the Confidence in Lifenewsletter for Alpha Production Ministries, in addition to writing tracts and devotionals. Teaching a women’s Bible study at her church for eleven years naturally led to her current endeavor of writing inspirational romance novels and teen and young adult fiction. Her mission: spiritual maturity in the body of Christ through fiction.

“The Write Way: A Real Slice of Life” is the slogan on my website and Facebook author page. If every person reading my book feels connected to the characters, my job is done.

More from E.C. Jackson

When I started writing The Confident Hope, I had an idea of the general story and little else. The only thing concrete was the book’s title and the main characters’ names. Which isn’t surprising. I develop my storylines by letting the characters take me where they will.

As I stared at the computer monitor, I suddenly knew how to begin. Once I had that idea, the first chapter came into focus; then, once again, the words trickled onto the page.

I then had to answer the questions that would direct the story. “Who are Pam and Mark?” and “Why is their story important to tell?” Unfortunately, Pam’s and Mark’s lives mimic what happens to us all. Our hopes and dreams either live or die. Each decision the characters made highlighted who they are and how they chose to handle their seeming successes and defeats.

They could rejoice over obvious successes. Become prideful. Or fail to recognize those blessings. The couple could thank God that some of their aspirations failed. Or pray that the ones they self-fulfilled wouldn’t bankrupt their lives.

Writing about Pam and Mark matured me in numerous avenues. That is what I most treasured about these beloved characters. Viewing their lives added substance to my own during the two years I worked on their story.

“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed.”

That scripture fed my heart through each trial I faced when penning my fourth book of the standalone hope series. Writing about these cherished characters increased my faith in God’s victorious hand.

MY REVIEW

I have read other books by this author and was very pleased with her writing style. In this book she takes situations and uses her characters to show the ups and downs of a marriage. The first chapter was abrupt to me as we suddenly find the two main characters married and this begins their journey. I wasn’t sure I really  liked either Pamela or Mark. They both seemed selfish and stubborn. To my surprise I realized why I didn’t like them. They were a mix of me at the beginning of my marriage. Oh yes I was stubborn, needed to be told over and over that I was loved and boy was I jealous.

I really liked the list they made at the  beginning of their marriage. Everything on the list would be good for every couple to follow. I can’t believe the big surprise waiting for Pamela when her and Mark come home from their honeymoon. A lack of communication is huge in this marriage and it causes friction that at times I wasn’t sure could be fixed. But in the midst of all their  fights, harsh words and pride was hope. Yes this book is all about hope. We need to never give up and constantly believe that nothing is impossible with God.

The author gives us a glimpse of Mark’s childhood which to me set the stage for him to fail in relationships unless he learns to forgive and trust his wife.  I liked watching Mark slowly begin to have a real relationship with his parents. It made sense why he desired to spend a lot of time with Pamela. He had never had anyone when he was growing up give him much attention and he craved that so much it almost felt like he was too clingy with Pamela.

Pamela is a driven woman who spends more time at her shop than with her husband. I had to wonder why she didn’t want to be with him and then I thought maybe she is afraid of rejection.  There are a few surprises in the story that does change both Pamela and Mark’s view of marriage. With family problems, insecurity and pride this couple seemed doomed from the start. But there is always hope.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

From an early age, Brett Armstrong had a love for literature and history. At age nine, he combined the two for his first time in a short story set in the last days of the Aztec Empire. After that, writing’s role in his life waxed and waned periodically, always a dream on the horizon, till he reached college. At West Virginia University, he entered the Computer Engineering program and spent two years pursuing that degree before an opportunity to take a creative writing class, for fun, came along. It was so enjoyable, he took another and in that course he discovered two things. The first was the plot for a short story called Destitutio Quod Remissio, which the others students really seemed to love. The second, he realized he absolutely loved writing. For him, it was like the proverbial light bulb coming on. In the years since, describing that epiphany has been difficult for him, but he found the words of 1924 Olympian Eric Liddell are the most eloquent expression for it: “God made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.” God gave Brett a passion for writing, and so feels His pleasure when writing.

Brett lives in Saint Albans, West Virginia, with his beautiful wife, Shelly. In the summer the pair gardens together, and each day Brett continues writing his next novel.

More from Brett

The Lowlands are on the edge of dramatic changes. In every era, warriors for the High King must rise to keep the light burning and hold back the beasts of the darkness that most believe only myth. But those creatures of lore wait for the nightfall that will allow them to roam free and relish that complacency.

None of the protagonists in the Quest of Fire saga—Anargen, Jason, and, in Succession, Meredoch—realize how great a change is coming. Anargen is from a quiet, little town that has stood unchanged and insular for centuries. Jason has been running from a darkness in his past so long he only looks to his next step, never what’s coming ahead. Meredoch grew up with high hopes for his future, proud of his family’s legacy. In the course of the saga, each faces a moment when what they’d clung to and trusted in fails them. For Anargen it’s his quaint life, Jason self-absorption, and Meredoch his family pride. In losing those things, however, each gains something. The chance to join the ancient Quest of Fire on behalf of the High King of All Realms. There’s a passage in The Gathering Dark that sums it up nicely. “Life is filled with losses full of greater gains.”

What excites me to write and share the Quest of Fire saga is showing through sweeping epic fantasy the way these characters stand firm. Though not the only spiritual theme woven into the stories, both The Gathering Dark and Succession invite readers to journey with these characters to the brink, risking their lives, and find there the greatest gain.

But I consider my life of no value to myself; my purpose is to finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace. —Acts 20:24

MY REVIEW

Although this is a quick read it has a lot of intrigue and adventure. I remember reading the first in this series thinking I actually like the writing style of this author. Now I don’t much care for   fantasy books but after reading several authors lately I have embraced it with a new fondness. In this book you have this overall feel of a time where Kings ruled and ruthlessness abounded.

Meredoch is the main focus of this story and I enjoyed following him as he was determined to keep his family safe. Although he is young he has a heart of a noble  knight. His mission was set and the author cleverly takes us on a journey that finds our character not only growing in faith but also as a young man. I especially liked the scene where father and son come together after a battle. Can Meredoch save his father ? The ring must be returned and Meredoch has set out to take it back. I could feel the excitement build as I wondered what would happen next.

The story takes on a serious tone as we see our main character fighting his feelings of forgiveness. He so wants to complete his mission but things in his past must be dealt with. It’s a fast story that I think middle  school and up will enjoy. Yes I did like the story and am fascinated by the creative imagination this author has.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Allen

The stakes have been raised in the 3rd book of the Towers of Light Series, Fear No Evil.  The children have been separated from one another in the darkness shrouded, Muddy River valley.  Evil prowls around them at every turn.  Do they have the faith to fear no evil?

My favorite part about writing this book was a conversation I had with the real Ethan.  I had a tight editorial deadline to meet and I decided to go on a writing retreat to finish the book.  While I was trying to leave home, my youngest the real life Ethan kept asking me questions and delaying my departure.  Finally, I said, “You know the last time I wrote there was a ferocious bear about to eat Ethan.  If I don’t sit down and start writing soon, he’s going to be a bear food.” Ethan’s reply was, “Yah you better go write now!”  You’ll have to pick up Fear no Evil to see if I got back to the story in time.

MY REVIEW

I am really enjoying this series. I didn’t  care too much for this genre until I started reading books by this author. He brings excitement, adventure, danger and God’s truth in a story that will intrigue many young readers. This is the perfect book  for young people to read. The author takes three children on an adventure to rescue their parents while fighting  off the darkness. I was happy to see the return of Uncle and the Knight protector.

As Lauren , Aiden and Ethan set out to go to Blooming Glen, they will each encounter a dangerous situation. I liked how the author separated them and allowed them to each fight their own demons. God  has given them light to overcome darkness. Now they must not fear but be courageous and trust Him. It was interesting to see how each child found the faith and strength they needed to fight darkness and those that stood in their way.

Even though it may have seemed hopeless each one fought their battle with the Holt  Spirit to give them encouragement. I loved the obstacles they overcame and how they never backed down. A great lesson in overcoming fear and shining light where darkness dwelled. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

“When something important needs to happen, God sends us the Holy Spirit to shine brighter to push back the Darkness.”

Forgiven Again: Extended Epilogue

The rag was warm and wet in her hand as Kylie wiped down the café countertop. Her shoes pinched her feet, and she was looking forward to kicking them off and plopping down on the couch with a movie and a leftover cinnamon roll.

As Kylie stretched across the flat surface, her hair fell into her face. She dropped onto her heels, then brushed the strand of hair out of her eyes. She turned to shake the cloth over the trashcan when the doorbell jingled behind her. Had she forgotten to switch off the open sign?

“I’m sorry. We’re closed,” she called over her shoulder. But instead of hearing the bell again, coins clunked down on her clean counter. She turned to face the late customer and cleared her throat. “Maybe you didn’t hear me. I said, we’re closed.”

The man about her own age nodded. His blond hair was knotted in dreadlocks and looked like it hadn’t been washed in months. His skin was tanned, and his clothes were well-worn. “I heard you. I just could really use a bottle of water.” His voice crackled, raspy and dry.

Compassion smote Kylie’s heart. It wouldn’t hurt to sell this guy one bottle of water before she sent him on his way. She turned to the fridge and opened the sticky door. The rush of cold air sent chills up her arms. “You look like you’ve been on the road awhile. Just passing through or hoping to stick around?”

“Hoping to stay awhile. I’m actually looking for someone.”

Kylie grabbed a cold water, then sat it on the counter. “That’ll be a dollar twenty-five.”

The man slid the coins toward her. Kylie took five quarters and dropped them into the cash register drawer. “Who are you looking for? Maybe I know them. This is a pretty small town.”

He twisted off the lid and poured the water down his throat. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he drank. When the bottle was empty, he sighed and wiped his arm across his lips. “Thank you. I appreciate you staying open for me.”

“Can I get you anything else?”

“No, thanks.”

Did he turn down her offer because he truly didn’t want anything else or he just couldn’t afford anything else? She glanced over at the boxed cinnamon roll waiting for her to take home. She grabbed it and slid in across the counter. “Hey. This was left over from this morning. I was just going to toss it out. You’re welcome to it.”

The young man’s eyes widened. His stomach audibly growled. His neck reddened. “Thank you. That is truly kind of you.” He stretched out his hand. “Christopher.”

Kylie smiled and took his hand. “Kylie. Nice to meet you.”

An odd look passed over the stranger’s face. “Kylie? I’m looking for a Kylie.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Really? I’m the only one in town that I know of.”

“Kylie Phillips?”

“Yes. That’s me.”

“My name is Christopher Phillips. I’m your brother.”

 MY REVIEW

I’m not sure where to start with my review. I am so overcome with emotions that I can’t stop crying. How do you let readers know that the book you just read changed you forever? I have done things in my life I am not proud of. Like Kathleen, I thought God  would never forgive me. How can he forgive us when we turn our back on Him? The simple answer is mercy and grace. Kathleen has kept a secret for a very long time hoping it would never be found out. What do you say to the daughter you gave up at birth?

Paige is such a gentle and kind person. All she wants is to get to know her mother and hope for a relationship between them. Is she naive to think that her mother will be excited to reunite with her? I know what it is like to be shunned by your mother. My mother and father told me they hated me on a daily basis and said I would never amount to anything. They forced me to watch my brothers open Christmas presents, while I sat there with none. My heart went out to Paige as she once again feels the pain of rejection. She can’t understand why a mother would abandon her child. Her pain can be felt in every tear she sheds and every ugly word her mother speaks to her. To hear her mother say, “I wish she had never been born,” penetrated her broken heart. How do you forgive after hearing that?

Kathleen is a very stoic, selfish, prideful woman. It was hard to like her with all she has done in her life. Her father was everything to her and she tried to always please him. I felt like Kathleen made her dad an idol in her life. Her downfall was not being stronger and allowing her decisions to hurt others. Her desire to go up the political ladder could cost her more than her life. Someone wants her out of the race for governor and will try blackmail, intimidation and bodily harm to scare her off. The best part of the entire book is watching Kathleen slowly change and start to believe that God does  love her. Forgiveness is a hard lesson for several characters. It is easy to forgive other but to forgive ourselves is much harder. It comes with admitting our faults and swallowing our pride.

Lastly I briefly want to mention Ryan. What a compassionate man he is. He has never stopped loving Kathleen. When he finds out about a secret she has kept from him, he is hurt. All these years  not knowing he had a daughter breaks his heart. He does something  I thought was very brave. Going to men in authority at the church he pastors and confessing his sin, was nothing short of courage. This brief part in the book is important to mention because it illustrates the scripture, “He without sin cast the first stone.”

The book is one I will never forget. God says to forgive seventy times seven. God wants us to forgive others quickly and with grace. Kathleen not only experienced forgiveness but felt the overwhelming mercy God gave her. He never left her and in her sin, he loved her unconditionally. The ending is beautiful and this author has become one of my favorites.

“Love is patient”
