A walk down memory lane on a snowy day (today) transported my thoughts to a Christmas shop our children and I visited every year. Open only for the holiday season, rich aromas reached out and drew you into this wonderland. The owners filled the space with unique treasures. A few we chose years ago remain prized member of my Christmas favorites close to four decades later.
My debut encounter with essential oils came many years later. I loved their aromas (including many of those Christmas scents) and studied their aromatic influences and potential benefits. Bible verses jumped to life in new ways. God created all plants and inspired the Biblical authors to include many. The desire to share my discoveries burned in my heart, until God finally released me to publish The Essence of Courage in December 2016. Before I completed the devotional based on Solomon’s locked garden in Song of Solomon 4:12-15, God reminded me just how many aromas and tastes of the Christmas season are found in the pages of His word, too.
Cinnamon, cedarwood, mint, citrus, myrrh, frankincense, rose, and figs are found in the pages of Scripture. So, are palms. They may not appear Christmasy unless you favor a tropical holiday, but they are an integral part of celebration in the Bible. The Essence of Joy offers discoveries of connections of all this plant life to Jesus’ nativity.
Looking back a dozen years to my first not-quite-inspired imaginings of a devotional book with aromatic offerings, I’m grateful God chose different timing. He presented me an unusual format for the collection. — one of those things easier experienced than explained. Contemporary women’s very real stories (fictionalized and often combined to create anonymity), stories from very real women living on the pages of Scripture, and a focused look at the botanical and its aromas, flavors, and essences as found in the Bible, are topped off with icing on the cake: ‘Fun Facts” and ‘Your Turn’ to invite the reader to more than read – to participate.
In The Essence of Joy you’ll encounter Scriptures in ways you had not considered before. Your faith will be enriched and stretched as you relate to the ancient women of the Bible and those that may be your next door neighbor today. You’ll be encouraged to breathe in the aromas of Jesus’ nativity, sample goodies from The Coffee Cottage’s specials of the day, and tune in to musical selections welcoming you into a posture of worship. I’m praying you are filled with His joy!
NOTE: Cinnamah-Brosia, the owner of The Coffee Cottage in the fictional stories asks readers at the very beginning of the book to be sure to read the introductory material. It helps set the stage for the book’s character and personality.

Review.jpg

This book was quite different from anything I have read before. I struggled at first trying to understand how the book was laid out. As I began to read more, a light bulb came on. This was going to be a book that would help bring joy back to my life. The different fragrances explained in the book was interesting and  I thought it was informative. Smells can bring back memories that are wonderful to remember. In the Bible I have read lots of times about myrrh but never really thought much about it.

I did enjoy the stories that were shared about different people and their experiences with miracles, forgiveness and joy. One particular story really stood out to me. It was the story about forgiveness. I related to it because I was abused as a child. It has been the hardest thing to overcome. I loved how the story showed how the mother was desperate to receive forgiveness from her daughter. It reminds me of how much we want to be forgiven by God. He forgives quickly, but we sometimes don’t believe it and spiral out of control.

Peppermint is my favorite flavor next to lemon. Everything about peppermint gives me a sense of calm. I love its aroma and taste. It reminds me of a time I was at my Aunt Ida’s place. One Saturday she said she was going to make homemade peppermint ice cream. I had never had it before and with one taste, I knew this would be my favorite ice cream. It is hard to find except at Christmas time . But the essence of peppermint is easy to attain. It helps you to breathe when you have a cold and calms you when you need it.  Each personal story ties into a fragrance that enhances a story found in the Bible. I liked how the author was able to relate different fragrances to people like the woman at the well and the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. It is a very informative book and has scriptures that you can study on to coincide with the different fragrances. Overall I liked the book and learned a great deal about fragrances and what they are used for,

About the Book

Book Title: Meddlin’ Madeline Fine Print
Author: Chautona Havig
Genre: Historical, Mystery
Release Date: February 20, 2018
Budding detective, Miss Madeline Brown, has gained quite the reputation for “meddling” in the circa 1900 city of Rockland. With two successful “cases” under her belt, it was only a matter of time before she found something new to interest her insatiable curiosity.
This time, however, the “curiosity” found her.
Challenged by Edward Gastrel, to prove her deductive prowess, Madeline embarks on riddling out the puzzle of a journal left to him by his grandfather. If she can decode the contents, the local gentleman may find himself in the possession of something quite valuable.
As usual, however, things aren’t as they seem, and Madeline finds herself in a race against more than time and ambiguity.

Guest Post from Chautona

Denny’s. “America’s Diner.” It’s also my “office away from my office away from home.” Most nights I write at our local prayer house. But on Wednesday nights for a few hours, and then all night on Saturday, I sit in booth 14 and write.
It was a cold, frosty Wednesday night. With thoughts from Bible Study still swirling in my mind and heart, I ordered my loaded baked potato soup and began brainstorming with my writing and podcasting buddy, April.
She left around midnightish—as usual. And another evening regular began chatting.
Look. I like this guy. He’s a fascinating conversationalist. We have a lot of fun talking books, movies, politics, history, computers… He’s even given me a great idea for a book (without meaning to, but still).
But… that night, I needed to get a bunch done on Madeline and didn’t have timefor chatting. So, when he started talking about his evening, I wanted to bang my head on the table. I kept repeating, “People are more important. People are more important. People are more important,” over and over in my head.
I can’t tell you how often this has happened at Denny’s. Employees stop to chat. Regular diners stop to chat. This guy starts a long conversation and always on nights I can’t afford to spend… chatting!
But everything shifted in an instant.
The man said something—what, I can’t remember—and my brain started churning.
I asked a question.
He answered.
The next thing I knew, he’d moved into my booth and began firing questions at me. Suggestions. Most of what he suggested wouldn’t work with the story, but he had no way of knowing that. Still, every time he did I got a new idea. And I’d ask a question. He’d answer, suggest. I’d counter—ask or answer. Ideas blossomed and exploded into seeds of even more ideas.
And right there, at two o’clock in the morning, with Angela the wonder server keeping me in fresh glasses of Coke, Fine Print went from not only my favorite of the Madelines (thus far) but also became much more exciting.
The whole thing taught me a couple of lessons. First, I always say that people are more important than the “stuff” I do. Sometimes, that’s not so easy to live. But the Lord is always faithful, like He did that night, to remind me that it sometimes helps me, too.
Second, sometimes a mid-book brainstorming session is just what I need to keep my excitement high. And, if that means a “wasted” Wednesday night in booth 14, then I’d say it’s worth it.

THE VIEW FROM RAINSHADOW BAY by
COLLEEN COBLE

I have to say that the cover caught my attention right away. The author always has appealing covers that gravitate readers to her books. Her writing style keeps readers coming back. The story is a very intricate and decisive plot. I loved the cat and mouse type theme with the main characters trying to stay one step ahead of the killer. The author pulls out all the stops to give a well written intense story that proves her skill of details that keep readers guessing.

Shauna was a well thought out character. Her burdens seemed overwhelming with the death of her husband while trying to juggle work and raising her son. The author gives subtle hints of underlying questions surrounding her husband’s death. Not everything is as it seems when houses explode and vandalism follow Shauna. Is there anyone she can turn to for help? I really enjoyed learning more about her childhood and a mystery that could answer a lot of questions about her family. The author had me hooked right from the beginning and continued till the very end.

Zach was a complex person to me. He blamed himself for his friend’s death but was willing to do anything to help his widow out. There wasn’t a warm reception between Shauna and Zach at first. I understood her hesitation in trusting him and enjoyed reading how they tried to let go of bitterness . With Zach being a daredevil it seemed to be his outlet for guilt. Sometimes guilt can eat you up if you aren’t careful. The story is filled with mystery that puts lives in danger and a need to protect loved ones. I highly recommend this book to readers who love a great mystery with non stop action that leads to an ending you won’t forget.

THE FUGITIVE SPY by
JORDYN REDWOOD

What an adventure, thrill ride and high octane intrigue this book is. It starts out with a riveting encounter between two people that explodes with mystery. I thought the author did an outstounding job of keeping readers guessing as the adrenaline rush kept coming. I can’t imagne working as an ER doctor. They must see all kinds of unexpected emergencies. I’m sure the day Casper English came into Dr. Ashley Drager’s ER she was not expecting to be on the run with him.

Why would Casper have a picture of her in his pocket? Better yet who is Casper English? Is it convenient that he has amnesia, or does he really have a head injury? It’s a question that is on Ashley’s mind as she treats him. Things don’t seem to be adding up and suddenly she finds herself on the run with Casper. There is danger everywhere they go and the sheer unknown is terrifying. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the next powerful twist in the story.

The author has done a great job of giving details about biological warfare. It is frightening to think that at any moment something could be released that could hurt or kill thousands of people. I was very intrigued by the choice the author used in exposing people to a dangerous and deadly outbreak of something we thought was dormant. The book reminds me of a Mission Impossible type espionage. She keeps readers glued to the pages with characters that run for their lives while learning to trust each other. This is my favorite book by the author because the storyline is vivid and realistic. It’s nice to read about a strong and determined woman who fights for the truth and a man who is willing to do anything to not only save the woman but the country as well. Make sure you grab a copy of this book and get ready for an explosive ride that takes you on a journey to underground safe houses, unexpected twists and an ending that will have you running to buy more books by this author.

Guest Post From Carla Laureano

I’ve got a confession to make: I have a cooking problem.
It started early and innocently enough, flipping through my mom’s cookbooks and marking things I wanted to try. Making cakes and muffins from a mix. Flipping frozen steak patties. Doctoring canned spaghetti sauce.
It wasn’t long before I got into the hard stuff: muffins from scratch, slow-cooked marinara, cast-iron seared and oven-finished rib eyes. Over the years, I tried to kick the habit numerous times, but every time things got tough, I found myself falling off the wagon and heading back into the kitchen. Even hosting dinner parties. Yes, dear reader, I pulled my hapless friends into my madness. To my shame, I even got some of them hooked with their own addiction.
Before I knew it, my obsessions started creeping into my day job. No longer was it enough to write contemporary romance about normal people who order take-out. No, I had to write chefs and passionate home cooks and describe the food in the books just as lovingly as I did a first kiss. And then the final straw—a book series centered entirely on food and the culinary profession, beginning with The Saturday Night Supper Club.
All joking aside, cooking really is an addiction that I haven’t been able to kick. As a writer, I spend hours locked in my own imagination, creating things out of words and ideas. And while it’s immensely fulfilling, it’s a long, painstaking process that takes months, even years, before I can release the final product into the world. While there’s a large amount of planning and analysis involved in creating a book, the work is still mostly in my head.
Which is why I find cooking to be such a relaxing creative pursuit. Dicing a pile of vegetables into perfectly uniform cubes may take the same concentration and precision, but it’s concrete and measurable. It becomes a personal challenge to do something better than last time, improving by tiny, nearly imperceptible increments. It’s the closest to meditation that my always-on brain ever experiences, clear of all thought except for my activity at the present moment.
And yet, simultaneously, food is ephemeral. Mistakes last only as long as it takes to eat them or toss them directly into the trash can, depending on the nature of the mistake. If a sauce breaks, I toss it and start over. If I burn something, I either cut off the burned part or I order takeout and try again the next day. There’s an element of experimentation and instinct and whimsy that isn’t hampered by the pursuit of perfection. Let’s face it, a mediocre chocolate chip cookie beats a perfect celery stick any day of the week.
It was natural, then, to write a chef heroine who had dedicated her entire life to the pursuit of culinary perfection and explore all the ways that food makes our lives and relationships richer. How it anchors our memories. How we nurture others by feeding them. How a simple meal becomes meaningful not because of the food, but because of the connections we form with others over the dinner table.
In the end, I guess my cooking problem isn’t that much of a problem after all. If you need me, I’ll be in the kitchen.

Review.jpg

I am a huge fan of cooking shows. I love watching all the wonderful dishes that are made and wish I was sampling them. The funny thing is I am a horrible cook, but I have a husband that is an amazing expert in the kitchen. When I started reading this book, I immediately felt connected to Rachel. She is a very talented chef and very focused on her career. The dishes described in the book came to life as I could visualize tasting them. I love how Rachel never gave up on her dream. The author gives readers a glimpse into her past that was very eye opening. It made me understand Rachel better and helped me understand her desire to see her dream come true. She first has to believe in herself and the story really does a great job of exploring that.  I wanted to see her succeed when she gets knocked down by her partners in a restaurant endeavor.  Its funny how people will believe things written in a paper without getting all the facts straight. Good thing Rachel is feisty as she fights to overcome unsavory comments made in an article.

Alex was probably my favorite character. He is a writer and has had a hard time getting a break. Maybe he had something to do with Rachel's demise from her job, but he humbled himself to try to fix his mistake. I loved his faith and willingness to go the extra mile to help Rachel. At their fist supper club, I wanted to be a guest . The menu was scrumptious and everything seemed to go smoothly. As the relationship starts to develop obstacles find their way into their hearts. I loved how Rachel was very vulnerable at times and had trouble with trust. It made her very east to relate to. Alex has some issues of his own which causes friction between them. The story flows beautifully and I enjoyed learning about Alex's heritage.  They are two very different people yet both striving for success. This is one book you don't want to miss. I loved when the author added this  in the story,  "Whatever decision you make, be sure you're doing it because it's what God would have you do, not simply because it's most comfortable."  Sometimes it is hard to get out of our comfort zone. We feel good where we are and sometimes find ourselves unhappy and stuck. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book that touched me emotionally and spiritually.

"If God had wanted you to be anything other than who and what you are, He would have made you that way."

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Following your Dreams
By Carrie Turansky
BellaIn Across the Blue, Bella Grayson and James Drake both go to great lengths to pursue their dreams. Bella longs to become a journalist and write for one of her father’s newspapers, but in 1909 England, aristocratic young women did not work as journalists. A young woman’s path was set by the unwritten rules of society. At eighteen she was presented at court, and then she took part in the London social season and hoped for a marriage proposal from a young man from a wealthy family, with an estate and title. Marriage, having children, and taking part in social and charitable events was the prescribed course for their lives.
But Bella has a different future in mind. She wants to marry for love, and she won’t settle for anything less. She also wants to write articles about the important events of the day that will inform and inspire people. She wants to be a world changer, and that is a very unique role for a woman in England in the Edwardian Era. At that time women didn’t have the right to vote yet and very few pursued any kind of career.
JamesAirplaneJames is an aviation pioneer, and his dream is to build an airplane that will allow him to be the first to fly across the English Channel. This is no easy accomplishment, and he faces many challenges as he pursues his dream. Aviation is brand new. Wilbur Wright demonstrated his airplane in France the year before and stunned Europeans with his skill. With the help of his mentor, Professor Steed, James conducts experiments, refines his design, and makes countless test flights. It takes great courage and determination to overcome setbacks and make it through near fatal crash landings, but James has his heart and mind set on perfecting his airplane and reaching his goal.
74fdde720c5ae29bd4c7672fe3b6f205What about you? What hopes and dreams do you have for your future? What goals would you like to accomplish? As you think about your dreams and future plans I hope you’ll gain some insight from James and Bella’s experiences in Across the Blue. When they considered the cost of pursuing their dreams they realized their plans and choices impacted others as well as themselves. James and Bella believed striving for their dreams is important, but they learned it must be balanced with commitments to family and friends, and most of all a commitment to following the Lord on the path He has for them.
AcrossSpineFollowing our dreams and working toward accomplishing our goals, especially those the Lord puts on our heart, is important. However, sometimes we may have to put our dreams on hold and wait for the right time and season. We don’t need to be discouraged when this happens. As we listen to the Lord and ask Him to guide and direct us He will show us the right path at the right time to follow it.
Just like James and Bella I hope you’ll pursue your dreams but also hold them with an open hand, allowing the Lord to guide and direct you each step of the way. When you do I’m confident you’ll be headed toward seeing your dreams become reality in His time and in His way. “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord; plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
With that wonderful promise in mind, I hope you’ll enjoy reading Across the Blue and joining Bella and James as they they pursue their dreams. You’re in for high-flying adventure, romance, and inspiration, and I can’t wait to share this new story with you. Happy reading to you!

Review.jpg

How many of you dreamt that you could fly when you were a child? I remember dreaming one night that I had on a cape and was standing at the edge of a cliff.  I took off and suddenly I was flying. The wind grazed my face as I flew through the air. I glanced down and saw trees that looked like little plants. When I woke up all I could think of was how wonderful it was to feel free. We all have dreams and this story reminds us to never up on your dream.

The story of the Wright Brothers is very famous and the author does an incredible job of explaining about flying machines in the 1900s.  I absolutely adored Bella right away. She is a very determined young woman. She comes from a very wealthy family who owns several newspapers. Her parents are determined to see their daughter marry into a prestigious family. I loved how Bella had other ideas. Her dream is to become a journalist. Oh my Bella what a dreamer you are. Has anyone told her that women can't be journalists? Her interest in aviation is refreshing and I loved how she was so supportive of this new adventure of flying machines. Will her father believe in her and allow her to write for the paper?

James is a very skilled pilot and is determined that nothing will stop him from being the first to fly across the English Channel. He sure has his work cut out for him when his flying machine crashes on Bella's family estate. At that moment I felt a connection between the two characters. They each have a dream and decide to support each other to achieve what is so important to them. What dream have you had that others supported? Did you give up or continue to pursue the dream? Will James be the first to fly across the English Channel?

What I loved about the story is how the author makes readers feel like they have traveled back in time and are witnessing James as he prepares to follow after his dream. Each time he took the flying machine up in the air, I could visualize how he must have felt.  He never gave up and with Bella supporting him his confidence became stronger. There were times my heart bear a little faster as he tried to keep the flying machine in the air.  Mixed in the story is a bit of mystery about James. What secrets about his childhood have been hidden from him? The relationship between Bella and James is sweet and has a few bumps that they need to work out. Thank you for writing a story that is filled with hope, faith, forgiveness and dreams. It is a beautiful story that not only highlights the start of aviation everywhere but reminds us that dreams do come true with determination and faith.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
