Early Missionaries to the Rocky Mountain Native American Tribes

One of the things I love about writing stories set in the 1830s Rocky Mountains is that Eastern civilization hadn’t yet touched the frontier. The only people who lived in or visited the Rockies during that were Native Americans and mountain men (usually trappers, but sometimes just explorers).

From that limited experience with white people, two of the native tribes realized they wanted to learn more about the white man’s God and his “Book of Heaven” (the Bible). In 1831, a delegation of four Native Americans—two Nez Perce and two Flathead—showed up in St. Louis, Missouri, asking for someone to come and teach their people about God.

Over the next several years, a number of people went west as missionaries, and this was the real-life inspiration for the heroine in Calm in the Mountain Storm. Though the characters in this story are fictional, the events certainly could have happened!

When Elise Lane heard that the Indians actually wanted to learn about God and simply needed someone to come tell them, she knew she had to answer that call. Of course, her brother Benjamin couldn’t let her go into that danger alone, so together, they set out on an expedition they knew would likely change them forever. Elise doesn’t have any idea exactly how much!

I pray you enjoy reading the story of Elise and Goes Ahead, the brave she meets who’s desperate for help getting his young children across the mountains. As with our hero and heroine in the story, I pray your faith is inspired!

MY REVIEW

If you haven’t had a chance to read the books in this series I would highly recommend them. Each story has characters from previous books and highlights them in a beautiful setting of the Rocky Mountains. Set against breathtaking scenery we follow characters on their journey during the 1830’s. The hardships facing our characters show the strength and faith they have.

This book gives us more insight into Elise and her adventure that has her facing a devastating loss at an Native American Indian village. What is discovered there is destruction and lives taken by unknown enemies. It became clear that Goes Ahead is not sure of the visitors and isn’t sure if they are responsible for his wife’s death. With Elise, her brother Ben, White Owl and wife Lola and baby standing before Goes Ahead there is tension in the air. Will he trust them and join them as they travel the mountainside?

The beautiful illustration of leading someone to Christ is very well written in this story. Elise with her grace and wisdom shares God with Goes Ahead. His desire to change and live a life that honors Gods so heartwarming. With a newness inside him he feels hope and a new beginning for him and his children. I loved how the author showed how Goes Ahead felt this peace come over him as he accepted Christ. It is a moment that expresses how God forgives us of our sins and welcomed us with open arms.

The story has danger, hardships and two people who find themselves drawn to each other. Elise thinks that her and Goes Ahead are too different to be together. God shows her that he has brought them together for a reason. She needs to give her fear to God and trust Him. Faith helps them realize that they can work things out and be happy together. I look forward to the next book in the series which featured Elise’s brother Ben.
