…to the only guy she’s ever thought might be good for her.

Corbin knows he’s not good enough for Fay. His friends remind him all the time that, as a florist, he’s not really man enough for anyone. That doesn’t stop him from stepping out of his comfort zone and going to Fay’s store to see if she remembers him. That’s when he discovers that his business is killing hers.

What are rivals to do when they can’t stop thinking about each other? Plan the flowers for someone else’s wedding, of course.

When Corbin and Fay must see each other and work together, will they dive through their pain and reach for the stars? Or will the roses be too prickly for two hurt hearts?

About the Author

kariKari writes swoony heroes and places that become characters with detail and heart.
Her favorite place to write about is the place her heart lives, (even if she doesn’t) South Dakota.

Kari loves reading, listening to contemporary Christian music, singing when no one’s listening, and curling up near the wood stove when winter hits. She makes her home in central Minnesota, land of frigid toes and mosquitoes the size of compact cars, with her husband of over twenty years. They have two daughters, two sons, one cat, and one hungry wood stove.

Nudge from the Almighty or personal desire?

Sometimes what we should do is as clear as mud. When I first felt the call to write, I worried that it was a “me” thing. I worried that the nudge that I felt was for my own glory. It didn’t matter that I felt the desire to write Christian fiction. We can do all the things we think are right and still be in the wrong place according to God’s will.

When I literally felt captive to the idea of writing—like, I couldn’t move forward without doing something about it—then I finally considered that perhaps this was God’s will and not just me wanting something. But it took years of the Holy Spirit prodding me before I ever acted.

Fay is like that. She starts her flower business certain she is doing the will of God and it helps that she really wants it too. But she works so hard, putting in so many hours, that she forgets about why she started it and it becomes all work for her own glory. Her business.

Enter Corbin, a really sweet guy who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and is used by God to nudge Fay away from her idol and into a deeper relationship. He’s a rival flower shop owner, and the only guy she’s ever felt a connection to. Which makes for some pretty interesting dialogue for the two of them.

Fact is, none of us likes to hear that our desire—especially when we think we’re doing the right thing—is wrong. No one ever wants loving correction by a Heavenly Father who cares about us deeply. We’re supposed to get it right.

Fay has to find out if it’s her business that’s getting in the way of her relationship or if it’s really a heart issue. I hope you’ll enjoy finding out along with her.

MY REVIEW

There is nothing like fresh flowers to bring cheer and happiness to someone. I could smell the aroma of delicate petals as the door opened to Fay’s flower shop. She has gained many loyal customers over the years which has kept her in business. That  all changes when Flowers 2 Be opens up close to her. Poor Fay sees her days becoming longer as slowly customers start to cancel their orders from her. How long can she keep her business going?

I found an interesting bit about flowers in the story. I’m not big on roses and prefer daisies and sunflowers. But a rose is very special and comes in a variety of colors. I had no idea that a blue rose existed at all. The blue rose symbolizes  “ reaching the impossible.”  Okay now I want to find a blue rose for myself. Blue is my favorite color after all. But back to the story. Where in the world is Fay going to get an enormous amount of blue roses in two weeks for a wedding? Talk about reaching the impossible.

Corbin is a delightful addition to the story. He is charming, handsome and did I mention the manager of Flowers 2 Be? It is a shame that he is in competition with Fay because they have become friends. I couldn’t wait to see how this story would unravel. The judgmental attitude he receives from some of the local people was upsetting to me. It proves how insensitive we can be when it comes to other people.

I loved reading about Fay and Corbin as they become better acquainted. Corbin needs someone who respects him and enjoys being around him. Fay need encouragement when her business starts to fade and an answer of where God wants her. The faith element is wonderful in the story as we see how God works in mysterious ways.

I have to mention Bertha before I close my review. She isn’t someone most people want to be around. Bertha is cranky, opinionated and unhappy most of the  time. But beneath that outer layer is a woman who is lonely and wants to be accepted just the  way she is. I loved her character so much because I think we sometimes forget to look around us. How often do we overlook the older person who desperately needs someone to talk to? Do we forget that there is someone hurting but scared to ask for help? What a wonderful reminder Bertha is for all of us to ask God to show us who we can help today.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

grief exposed-corrected

About the Book

Book: Grief Exposed: Giving a Voice to the Unspeaking

Author: Mike Sollom

Genre: Non-fiction / Grief

Release date: March 15, 2022

Grief Exposed (1)In those dreadful early days and nights after Mike’s son died, the only thing he could think to do, when he collided with the morbid memories of his son’s suffering and the unbearable ache of Jim’s absence, was to find some way to describe how he was feeling. So, he found a spiral-bound notebook and wrote. And wrote and wrote and wrote.

Mike believed if he could assign words to the grief and pain, he might find a way to endure them.  If he could bring those words into the light, it might make the whole thing bearable.   Many of the words were dark and raw and angry and did little more than chronicle ten interminable years of wrestling and railing. But there were island of hope and yes, there were words of light.

Through the gentle and generous encouragement of friends, Mike came to wonder if those words of light, which he discovered in the darkest of nights, might also help someone else endure the unbearable realities of their grief and loss—that they might become someone’s guide.  If they could, then how could he keep those words buried in a stack of spiral-bound notebooks?

My “One Day” Has Come

“One day you will tell the story of how you overcame what you went through and it will become someone else’s survival guide.”

I don’t know who wrote that.  I saw it on a poster with no credit given.  But it’s a good description of how this book came to be and what I hope will be its outcome—its path and its purpose.

Here’s the truth of it: I didn’t set out to write anything. Much less a book.  I still don’t see myself as a writer.  Yet, here I am.

I went somewhere I didn’t want to go.  I went through something I never dreamed I’d have to go through.  I didn’t have a choice.  I went there.  I went through it. And now I’m telling my story.

My first-born son died of cancer.

In those dreadful early days and nights after Jim died, the only thing I could think to do—when I collided with the morbid memories of his suffering and the unbearable ache of his absence—was to find some way to describe how I was feeling. So, I found a spiral-bound notebook and wrote. And wrote and wrote and wrote.

I believed if I could assign words to the grief and pain, I might find a way to endure them.  If I could bring those words into the light, it might make the whole thing bearable.   Many of the words were dark and raw and angry and did little more than chronicle ten interminable years of wrestling and railing. But there were islands of hope and yes, there were words of light.

Through the gentle and generous encouragement of friends, I came to wonder if those words of light, which I discovered in the darkest of nights, might also help someone else endure the unspeakable realities of their grief and loss—that my voice might become someone’s “survival guide.”  If so, then how could I keep those words buried in a stack of spiral-bound notebooks just because I didn’t see myself as a writer?

I’m taking a huge risk by plunging back into that bottomless pit of loss and dragging myself through that incessant slog of sorrow once again, unclear of the worth or usefulness of the outcome. I’m exposing my most intimate grief, with all its messiness and vulnerability, uncertain of its reception or the consequences it will bring. I’m giving a voice—my voice—to the unspeakable pain of death and suffering, unaware of who will hear me or how they will respond. Yet, in the face of all of that, I’ve decided it’s a risk I’m willing to take.

“One day you will tell the story of how you overcame what you went through and it will become someone else’s survival guide.”

I guess my “one day” has come.

MY REVIEW

The topic of this book is not one anyone wants to go through but I found it very honest and helpful. The author rips the bandaid off the cliches  of grief and exposes the hard truth we face as we enter this heart wrenching phase in our life. If you ask around I’m sure someone you know or even yourself has experienced a loss of a loved one. For me it was my brother who passed away three years ago. The pain is still there and I have days where I miss him so much it hurts. Grief has no time limit and we each grief differently. This book is one man’s journey and I appreciated how transparent he was in describing the journey he took on grieving the loss of a son.

Many people think they are helping when they say, “It will get better,” or God didn’t do this, He simply allowed it.” In the middle of  grieving what I found I needed the most was someone to listen to me, allow me to share my pain and hug me. The author shares the struggles  he faced everyday as he walked around numb. I can relate to him thinking how life was normal for everyone around him,  yet he was breaking inside. People tell you to make sure you take care of yourself, but there are times when you just need to be alone.

The book is one that I found shared real emotions and a man who walked everyday not knowing if he was going to cry, be angry or find comfort. His cries out to God are genuine and helped him release some of the pain he felt losing his son. I stopped when I read this in the book. “I wish people would stop saying they’re praying for me.” Because I know they’re not.” How many times have you said to someone, “I’m praying for you,” but then went about your day. God forgive me when I said those words to someone and then didn’t pray. I understand how important prayer is and I don’t want it to be a phrase I say. I want to stop what I’m doing and pray for that person when they ask.

I have learned a lot reading this book and am glad I had a chance to review it. It taught me that there are things not to say to someone grieving and I’m sorry to those who found my words insensitive or judgmental. I have this new sense of grace when it comes to grieving.

“I trust that you believe now that your grief is not a curse. Nor is it a blessing. It is simply where you meet God.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Angela

Flower of the Rockies is one of my favorite stories. I didn’t realize when I started writing about the Montana state flower that I’d be digging into a deeper part of myself. A part I didn’t want to remember.

Stumbling on the women’s club that worked so hard to create symbolism for the state of Montana sparked a story idea. Then that idea needed a character help me tell the story. Then she told me she didn’t know how to read. Okay, I can run with that… But I’m a really good reader. So how do I connect to this widow who needs to learn to read to stop her husband’s partner from cooking her books and stealing everything she has left?

It hit me. She and I had a lot in common. As a kid, I was awkward. I didn’t connect well because I couldn’t read people. Ironically, I read books to learn about people. But it took getting out and being with people to begin really connecting and communicating.

Emmalee doesn’t want to be around people because she’s been rejected for her past and ridiculed publicly. Who wants to be friends with a soiled dove? But, she’s lonely. I suddenly connected on an even deeper level with her. I understood her need for love and acceptance. Her desire to become someone respectable.

On a bigger scale, that’s what the women of Montana were trying to prove, too. That their state fit in with the other states, had something special, something symbolic that showed she was accepted and respected. She had a flag, a state flower, and people who mattered.

Come join me in the Flower of the Rockies. I think you’ll like Emmalee and her journey toward acceptance. There are a lot of layers to the story’s symbolism. I wrote it and have been amazed at how God keeps revealing those layers to me in one short book. Let me know what is revealed to you.

MY REVIEW

I am enjoying reading this series and finding about historical facts about the state of Montana. When I was a little girl I remember traveling through Montana on vacation. The state was so big it took us forever to get past it. This story gives us a look at Montana in the late 1890s and it started to grow.  Gold mines were popular and many worked hard to provide for their family working long hours in the mines. I loved learning more about the mines and how easy it could be to deceive someone out of their share.

Emmalee has a past she tries to overcome but when her husband dies, men try  to take advantage of her. There is talk in the town about Emmalee being a prostitute at one time. Those busy body women just love  to point fingers at others who have sinned, but they need to remember that we all have sinned. Emmalee has done well for herself as she has been freed from that life that made her feel ashamed. Now she must face the fact that she can not read or write.

There are so many wonderful lesson in this story that I have to mention a few. Emmalee is reminded that she deserves a second chance. God loves  her and wants her to hold her head up high as she has been forgiven. When Richard is hired to help Emmalee in a matter that affects her finances he also shows her how important she is. His encouragement is just what she needs to fight in court against  a man who has been stealing from her. I loved witnessing the transformation of Emmalee as she becomes confident and able to trust again.

I really liked learning about how the Montana state flower was chosen. The author does an excellent job of giving us historical facts about the vote for the flower and I must say the vote was not close at all. I loved this story because it shows how God gives grace to everyone and He is a God of second chances.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

KristenJoyWilks1Kristen Joy Wilks lives in the beautiful woods of the Cascade mountains with her camp director husband, three fierce sons, and a large and slobbery Newfoundland dog. She spent her misguided youth falling in love with Commander Spock via Star Trek reruns, being suspended upside down over a homemade pit filled with gardener snakes, and stampeding herds of elk while on horseback. Now most of her adventures consist of preventing her hubby from filling another wall of their dining room with board games, thwarting her 3 boys’ efforts to sneak their pet chickens onto their bunk beds whenever she turns her back to fold laundry, and trying not to trip over the random teenagers that swarm her house to play all those board games.

More from Kristen Joy

Have you ever gotten stuck with someone else’s luggage? How about someone else’s dog? Let’s make that someone else’s ill-mannered, 150lb, Newfoundland dog!

Yes, Morgan, my poor heroine just wanted to discover her roots during a calm tour of Copenhagen, Denmark. What she gets … a wild chase through a foreign city with a giant and hairy beast in tow!

We have owned two wonderful Newfoundland dogs and they are truly gentle giants … once they grow up. But that training process is a sight to behold when your “puppy” weighs 100lbs before he reaches his first birthday and doesn’t even notice you bouncing along behind him as he charges for the lake.

Our first Newfoundland, Shamu, ended up weighing a hefty 163lbs in his prime and was a handful for those first few training years. Thus, I have taken some of our crazy dog stories and used them to harass my hapless heroine during her Danish vacation. Shamu would gallop toward any body of water he spotted. A lake, river, nice fountain, you name it! If you happened to be dragged along with him, he didn’t mind. The more the merrier! Don’t worry, there is plenty of water in Copenhagen to tempt a fun-loving Newfoundland dog. One might see various fountains, a paddle boat pond in Tivoli Gardens, or even a restaurant that is actually a pirate ship floating on a lake. Add a bunch of dog hair and slobber and this crazy RomCom hits a bit close to home for someone who actually owns a Newfoundland dog.

As a prize, I’m offering notecards that feature our current Newfy (Princess Leia Freyja) in all her hairy glory as well as a box of Danish chocolates and a paperback copy of the book.

May your day be full of adventure … but not quite as much as Morgan endures in Copenhagen Cozenage. God Bless!

In His Hands,

Kristen

MY REVIEW

This is a fun and easy read where we follow Morgan to Denmark on a mysterious journey. Arriving at the baggage claim she finds herself surrounded by a massive dog. I have to say the Newfoundland dog stole the show. His owner seems to have disappeared and Morgan is now the dog sitter of Leroy . If you haven’t seen this breed of dog before, they are extremely big and sweet. Now what is Morgan suppose to do with this new found companion?

Her trip was to meet a relative she knew nothing about, solve a mystery about her heritage and try to stay alive. It does  sound easy enough, but someone is after her and she has to outwit them before she ends up you know what. I loved the twists in the story and the faith element that kept Morgan from falling apart. With cell phone pictures being taken of her constantly, people chasing  her,  I wasn’t sure who she could trust.

If you are looking for a light hearted read filled with a little suspense, lost jewelry, surprises, family that is not quite trustworthy, and a nice ending, this is the perfect book for you.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
