Author: Valerie Comer

Release Date: September 8, 2020

Adam Cavanagh’s rodeo championship tastes like dirt after a competitor’s critical injury, but going home to his family’s Montana ranch isn’t much of an improvement. If not even the coveted trophy earns his stepfather’s respect, what will it take?

Riley Dunning’s quick thinking is all that’s keeping her body, soul, and principles together, but demanding a kiss from a hunky cowboy to deter the weirdo following her might be taking things too far… especially when the cowboy comes up with a risky plan that might offer them both stability. If it doesn’t backfire completely.

Will a fake engagement give Adam and Riley the leg up they each need, or will the cost to their hearts be too high? Because neither believes the other will want to marry them… for real.

 MY REVIEW

Oh my do I love a good cowboy story. Maybe it’s because I’m from Texas but cowboys, ranches and romance make a great combination. I am excited about this new series and it promises to be a bumpy yet exciting time for readers. Adam is definitely a cowboy with his many successes  in rodeos. It was hard to read about why he stopped what he loved doing. I think he blames himself a little for the accident that he witnessed. It was hard for him to see his friend injured without knowing if he was going to be okay.

The dynamics of Adam’s family is chaotic at times with a step father and step brothers. Adam has a plan to win back the ranch that was his dads but I knew right away trouble was ahead. Riley is in need of rescuing and running into Adam may be just what she needs. I did chuckle at the scheme they planned because let’s face it, deceiving someone is never good. Oh you can read the story and find out what Adam and Riley have planned but beware of the emotional tug on your heart. Yes I cheered for them to stop the charade and fess up. I wanted them to realize that only bad will come from lying.

I liked when Adam had a look at himself and realized he called himself a Christian but he sure wasn’t acting like one. Riley isn’t much better with her need to run away from her problems back home. I really liked how the author presented characters who were willing to be deceitful for monetary gain. They have a hard lesson in front of them and it makes for a great reminder that the “ the love of money is the root of all evil.”The author delivers a great story about forgiveness, integrity and love. I loved getting to know the characters in this series and can’t wait for the next installment.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Valerie

Oh, cowboys…

Four years after I began publishing farm romances, I added my first cowboy romance series to the lineup. “It’s not that different,” I told myself and anyone who would listen. “Ranches are almost the same as farms. A few more horses, a few less random other animals!”

Ah, but cowboys are deemed more attractive than farmers! Maybe it’s their uniform. You know, a Stetson. Plaid snap-front shirts under denim jackets. Well-worn jeans. Cowboy boots. That combo looks better on a book cover than the stereotypical farmer in a straw hat, overalls, and rubber boots!

Whether focusing on cowboys, farmers, or gardeners, all of my green clean romances feature engaging characters, strong communities, and deep faith. Are the characters perfect Christians? Nope. No more than you and I are. There’s always room to grow.

In Marry Me for Real, Cowboy, the first story in my new Cavanagh Cowboys Romance, Adam decides a fiancĂ©e is just what he needs to impress his stepfather. Not that Adam wants to get married any time soon, but surely it won’t come to that! But… how long do you think it will take for him to realize that he’s living a lie and not trusting God to handle his future? What will his path be to resolve his lack of faith as well as move forward both in romance and in his relationship with his stepdad? You may have to read Marry Me for Real, Cowboy and find out!

AN AMISH HUSBAND FOR TILLIE by AMY LILLARD

This story is so well written that   I read it in one day. Tillie is somewhat spontaneous and I think it has caught up to her. She leaves her Amish life to follow her boyfriend only to realize she has made a big mistake. I love how important her family and faith is. Returning home pregnant is a little scary for Tillie. After all she knows the community will gossip and make her feel uncomfortable.

Tillie’s family welcomes her home and shows her love without question. I loved the feeling of unconditional love that Tillie felt has she snuggled in her old room that first night home. I worried what the Bishop would say to Tillie. His sharp words stung like a bee that continues to cause pain. I wanted to wrap Tillie in my arms and tell her that her family would never shun her. I don’t  think I could ever shun one of my children.

Levi is a welcome addition to the story. He is dealing with the loss of his wife and unborn baby. His sister means well but he wanted to just stay locked in his house and pray the pain would go away. I loved how Tillie and Levi share a miracle one night that reminds me a little of the birth of Jesus. It had to be so hard for Levi as he witnessed the birth of a child. I could feel his tears form in his eyes as the precious gift from God was delivered.

I loved when  the baby’s father came back into the picture. Melvin wasn’t exactly a bad person, yet he didn’t embrace coming back to the Amish ways. His presence brings tension and concern to many. The story is very emotional and has a big surprise I didn’t see coming. Who will Emily end up with? Will Levi win her heart or will Melvin whisk her back to the English world?

I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.

About the Book

Book: Legend of the Storm Sneezer
Author: Kristiana Sfirlea
Genre: Middle-Grade Fantasy
Release Date: May 5, 2020
Legend Seeker. Part-time Ghost Hunter. Time Traveler.

Thirteen-year-old Rose Skylar sneezed a magical storm cloud at birth, and it’s followed her around ever since. But when “Stormy” causes one too many public disasters, Rose is taken to Heartstone, an asylum for unstable magic. Its location? The heart of a haunted forest whose trees have mysteriously turned to stone.

They say the ghosts are bound to the woods … then why does Rose see them drifting outside the windows at night? And why is there a graveyard on the grounds filled with empty graves? Guided by her future selves via time traveling letters, Rose and Marek—best friend and potential figment of her imagination—must solve the mystery of the specters and the stone trees before the ghosts unleash a legendary enemy that will make their own spooks look like a couple of holey bed sheets and destroy Heartstone Asylum.

Letters from the future are piling up. Rose can’t save Heartstone herself. However, five of herselves, a magical storm cloud, and a guardian angel who might very well be imaginary? Now that’s a silver lining.
But will they find what killed the ghosts before what killed the ghosts finds them?

 MY REVIEW
The first words I though of as I finished the book were whimsical, friendship, imagination and endearing. If ever there was a character I wanted to be it would be Rose. I loved her so much and I easily related to her. She is such a darling thing that longs  for acceptance and friends. The magical “ Stormy” is quite something.
Marek is just what Rose needs as her best friend. Now here is where I pondered a question for quite awhile. Is Marek real or is he imagined by Rose? After all she so wants someone to talk to, to go on adventures with and to feel important to. Well the story had me so mesmerized I never wanted to leave Rose and her imagination. The story is very funny and entertaining. It has ghosts, mystery, time traveling and so much more that I wanted to scream with joy. Yes I wanted to scream out loud that this book is just what the world needs right now. A place to go where laughter abounds and characters that come to life with charm and a bit of mystery.

The story is just the  right balance of laughter, adventure, curiosity and characters that entertain while embracing a Guardian Angel. This is a must read for those who like adventure and imagination that delivers a story that will cherished and read over and over. I have to say how impressed I am with this author’s unique style of writing. I am a huge fan now and eagerly await her next book.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

As an author, Kristiana Sfirlea knows what it means to get in character. She spent five years volunteering as a historical reenactor and trying her best not to catch her skirts on fire as a colonial girl from the 1700s (leading cause of death at the time next to childbirth). Working at a haunted house attraction, she played a jumping werewolf statue, a goblin in a two-way mirror, and a wall-scratcher—so if she’s standing very still, growling, checking her reflection, or filing her nails on your wall, be alarmed. Those are hard habits to break.
Kristiana’s speculative flash fiction has been published by Havok, and her debut novel Legend of the Storm Sneezer is a whimsical Middle Grade fantasy involving time travel and things that go bump in the night. She dreams of the day she can run her own mobile bookstore. Or haunted house attraction. Or both. Look out, world—here comes a haunted bookmobile! (And this is precisely why writers should never become Uber drivers.) She loves Jesus, her family, and imaginary life with her characters.

Should kids enjoy spooky things?

It’s the question on many Christian parents’ minds this time of year. Should my kid see that movie, wear that costume, celebrate that holiday? From tots to teens, most kiddos have an undeniable fascination with Halloween. But should this be encouraged—or cut down quicker than the first victim of a horror flick?

Let me tell you a story. (Don’t worry, it’s not too scary.) Once upon a time, there was a young girl with a monster that followed her wherever she went. It bit at her constantly, venom flooding her veins with anxiety, teeth gnawing her courage to worried nubs. But her monster wasn’t really a monster—it was a debilitating health condition that took the girl’s entire childhood to diagnose.

For years, her fears and pain and panic seemed like her only friends. But then one day, the girl discovered a book series unlike anything she’d ever read before. (And believe me, she’d read a lot.) It was filled with magic and monsters and chilling, thrilling adventures. The heroes faced so many scary things—and putting herself in their shoes, the girl had never felt so understood. Finally, she had friends to take with her to the endless doctor appointments, and somehow holding those books in her hands made her braver.

But in the end—for there is always an end to such things—those books failed her.

They failed her because they didn’t point her to the only true source of bravery: Jesus.

And so, with this in mind, the girl grew up to write a book called Legend of the Storm Sneezer, a story about ghosts and time travel and the true meaning of sacrificial love.

Should kids enjoy spooky things? Maybe. Should kids enjoy spooky things that show them how the power of God’s love frightens any monster—or monster-sized problem? Absolutely.

 MY REVIEW
Each story in the book is unique and gives us a look at Amish life during different time periods. I love that the authors are men and I hope they do more anthologies together.  It was a great book filled with Gods love and forgiveness while giving us insight into Amish and their beliefs.
The Amish Menorah by Patrick E. Craig
This story was very captivating and I loved learning more about the Amish during a time when Hitler reigned. It was easy  to connect to Gert because he had compassion for everyone. It was hard for him to understand why the Jewish people were hated. The author paints a good picture of what it was like for Emily as she feared for her life.
I liked the message in the story about grace and how there is only one God. Gert stood his ground and protected Emily knowing that God was there. He was a testament about forgiveness as he forgave someone who betrayed him. The story is very intriguing and I learned a lot about the Jewish culture.
A Cloudy Day by Willard Carpenter
I really enjoyed this story because it takes a look at what the Amish believe in. I have often wondered what would happen if one of the children were to disagree  with the Amish beliefs. In this story we follow two young people in love. There is trouble right from the start because one is Amish and the other is English. Hannah is a sweet young woman who loves James and wants to be with him. There is a lot of friction between Hannah and her father.

I found it interesting that Hannah’s father how problems with some of the Amish rules, yet didn’t give grace to his daughter. I liked that the author let us glimpse the consequences when someone decides to go against the community. The thought of shunning any of my children makes me cry. God does not want us to shun or judge others. He calls us to love each other as we love ourselves. I really hope the author does a follow up on this story. I want to see what happens to Hannah and James. I have to mention how much I liked James’ parents. Their unconditional love for others is an example of what the Bible tells us to do.

When Hearts Break by Jerry Eicher

This story was but a few pages so I was left a little disappointed. The author shares just enough for readers to want to grab the book so they can find out what happens to the characters. It deals with abuse and I’m thinking it will be a difficult book to read.

The Silo by Thomas Nye
This story is a look at child abuse. I can understand why the new neighbor thought that Harvey and his siblings were being abused. From her perspective the children were being forced to work all day in the heat while not wearing shoes. She observed them working their horses almost to exhaustion. I like how the author shows how people can misjudge a situation and jump to conclusions.

I did like Ms. Mims and how much she cared about her neighbor’s children.  If you suspect abuse, report it. Maybe Ms. Mims didn’t know all the facts but she did do the right  thing . Her heart was in the right place and I like how forgiving Harvey’s parents were to her. There is also a little lesson about pride that  shows how competitive children can be which sometimes makes them prideful.

Lone Star by Murray Pura

Oh how I loved this story of Amish meets cowboys. Saul is an imposing person with his height . Being Amish makes some people curious of him in town. I really enjoyed when he took the job as Marshall . His faith does not allow violence or guns so it was interesting to see how he would keep peace in town.

I loved being transported to a western town and witness Saul as he provided safety for the townspeople. His uneasiness that something soon would happen was a warning from God. Saul was a man of his word and in the face of danger he refused to use a gun.  The author portrays Saul in a way that represents what Jesus did for us. Jesus didn’t like violence and spoke words of grace and forgiveness. Saul is a good character and I liked how he stood firm on his faith. The story is good and reminds me of an old western show you would watch on tv.

Amish For The Summer by Amos Wyse

DeeDee is not the most pleasant young woman to be around. She is spoiled, rude and uncaring. The story takes us on a journey of DeeDee’s redemption. After getting into trouble with the law, she finds herself living  and working on the Amish farm where she hurt animals. I really wanted her to go to jail, but her punishment was more fitting.

There is a valuable lesson in this story where DeeDee realizes how selfish she has been. The Amish women surround her with love and make her feel part of the family. I loved how she slowly changed and found that reading the Bible made her heart soften. I loved how she began to see how she needed to be a better person and treat others with respect.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Authors
Will CarpenterTo know Wil, one would probably not think of him as an author. He is a husband, a father, a Christian, a veteran, a business owner, and a servant. He has led a life of bold and diverse experiences that immediately capture one’s attention.  Wil has an unexpected artistic and creative side—something that might be considered uncommon, given his life’s works. Wil’s greatest inner strength is his expression and creativity. His life’s works give a credit to his writing that few other fiction authors possess. This generates a vivid degree of realism above and beyond other works of fiction.

More from The Men of Amish

The Amish Menorah and Other Stories was born out of a happy meeting between Patrick E. Craig and Thomas Nye at an Amish writers and readers event put on by Connie Spradling Lynch in Shipshewana, Indiana in 2019. Most of these readers did not know that there were several men who wrote Amish fiction. So Patrick and Tom decided to do something about that. After the conference, invitations went out to Murray Pura, Willard Carpenter, Jerry Eicher and Amos Wyse. Deb Haggerty at Elk Lake Publishers signed on and The Amish Menorah came to be.
Patrick E. Craig
As always, the six of us male authors of Amish fiction, have the goal of writing interesting and inspiring stories about Amish life. Collectively, our purpose in putting together The Amish Menorah, was to offer a sampling of Amish novellas written by men. There are only a few of us guys and dozens of women writing Amish novels. This book is an opportunity for readers of Amish fiction to sample six of our writing styles in one setting.

The Biblical description of a Menorah is a seven-flame lampstand. We like to think of our six stories in the Amish Menorah as six flames, each shining a unique light on Amish life. Our prayer is that you, our readers, will become that seventh flame as you join us by reading The Amish Menorah.
