More from Carrie

Why I Wrote Lilac Cottage

I had felt the Lord nudging me to write a sequel to my first-ever Women’s Fiction, Butterfly Cottage (after writing 20+ Historical Romances in Christian Fiction). I travel up to the Straits of Mackinac each summer to do book signings, library visits, and to see family and friends. At several of my book signings at the Island Bookstore, on Mackinac Island, I had readers ask if I had a sequel planned for Butterfly Cottage. I met a lovely young reader at one of the signings, who worked at Lucky Bean, my fave coffee shop in the world and it is on the island. Rachel asked me about plans for the next book and I thought – what if I had a young heroine who worked at Lucky Bean for the summer? Ya know, most authors stories start with the what if. So, I also tossed around the notion of what if Rachel was actually camping out in one of the mansions, called “cottages”, up on West Bluff? That spawned my plot thoughts.

When I work, I percolate an idea. I also will not pursue writing a story unless God’s hand is on it. So, I first submitted my will to His. I got the go ahead. I also got a lot of other stuff: Norovirus, Covid, a root canal and crown, a bleed on an optic nerve, and also what I thought might be a heart attack but thankfully it was only my Rheumatoid Arthritis, oh and did I mention recurrent shingles? Yup—all that. So, I figure there must be a reason this book needs to be written for me to have confronted such opposition from the enemy.

This is my very first novel where the main characters are all saved and are all newbies as far as being refreshed in their faith. At my church, one of the pastors preached about how new Christians are so on fire for the Lord and how they are often different from those of us who have been saved for a long time. I wanted to have that reflected in this novel.

I know people have strong feelings about the pandemic. I wanted to make sure I had written something that included some reality of what the winding down was like in 2022, which is when the story is set. My father was born in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic and I always felt that authors from that time didn’t include enough references to how this affected people. I didn’t dwell on Covid in this novel, but I did touch on it in I hope realistic ways, such as shortages of workers.

Whew! One other reason I wrote some of the characters in this book was to give one of my continuing characters, Mrs. Hampy Parker, some redemption. She’s been a Co-dependent in two of my books (Butterfly Cottage and Behind Love’s Wall) and it was time, since she’s now in her early 80’s, for her to get free from that. I enjoyed the new start her character got and it was inspired by one of my friend’s real life stories.

Thank you for being part of the tour!!! And may God bless and keep you!

MY REVIEW

I have to start my review by saying how gorgeous the cover is. It definitely will grab readers attention. Once they  start the book they will see how gifted the author is. Her ability to guide readers into the story with a feeling of being a part of it is something I admire. I like that the story includes real life issues like the recent virus and how the characters are all new Christians. Something the author wrote really woke me up. New Christians are on fire for God but sometimes those who have been a Christian for awhile seem to be lackluster at times. I want to get that fire again and be excited every day because Jesus is with me.

Now let’s move on to the characters. There were quite a few of them in the story so at times I was a little lost. I quickly caught on who everyone was and the story flowed easily for me. Rachel has found herself homeless and without a job. She needs to find a solution  fast. I loved how we travel to Mackinac  Island . The beautiful surroundings are peaceful and I’m so glad she decided to stay at a place that is special to her.

The author highlights three families in the book and I loved that we discovered secrets, friendships that needed to be mended and family that held each other together as they walked through difficult issues. I could mention more about the different characters but I think I want readers to get acquainted with  them as they unravel the story that brings healing, hope and faith to our characters.

I love the twists in the story and unexpected surprises that kept me glued to the book.  I was shocked at one particular secret that comes out. It was never something I picked up on in the story. What a oh my moment this was,  I loved how faith was at the center of the story and there is a good illustration of second chances and forgiveness.

“Forgiveness wasn’t for the person you forgave. It was for  yourself. To let it go. To get right with God.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

MY REVIEW

This book will have you running to your Bible and looking up what God has said about the end times. I am very impressed with how much work went into this book and the many passages of scriptures that showed the sequence of events that are in the Bible. The author does  a good  job of giving  readers a look at what it may be like as the end draws near.

In this story we see that the Anti-Christ is in place and has already declared death and destruction to those who don’t follow him. It was eerie to think about how people looked for food and there was none. People were taken from their families with no warning. Their fate was sealed it seemed and desperation set in.

Josh and his family find themselves separated and on different paths. Josh is being  hunted for a crime he didn’t do. His wife has been taken to get information out of her. The techniques described to get what they want were horrible  and I was on the edge of my seat as Rachel prayed that God would save her. Their daughter has been taken to a place  where she is behind bars and treated so unkindly I cried for her. One thing is clear throughout the story though. This family never wavers from their faith.

The author goes into depth about the Tribulation and I could picture pieces of it starting to happen today. We need to be on guard at all times for the tricks satan will use to get people to turn away from God. The author leaves us with a cliffhanger and I hope she is finishing up the next book very soon. I need to know what will happen next and if Josh and  his family find a way back to each other. Get ready for a story that will keep you glued to the book as darkness and destruction try to take over.

More from Misty

What IS a trapper rendezvous?

Rocky Mountain Rendezvous is the story of four sisters who head west to accomplish their father’s deathbed request—return a special set of beads to a Blackfoot woman who saved his life during his travels west two decades earlier. The sisters head west with the supply wagons bound for the 1837 trapper rendezvous to find the native woman. But the sight that greeted them in the Green River Valley (in modern-day Wyoming) was nothing like they expected!

Men EVERYWHERE!

Supply wagons would come from the east every summer, and mountain men and natives would come from all throughout the Rockies to trade furs for the supplies they’d need in the coming year. This was usually the only opportunity for trading each year, so EVERYONE came and the camp stretched for miles. This was a great time for friends to catch up, and the festivities always included a great deal of drinking and horse racing. The rendezvous was a sight to behold!

In Rocky Mountain Rendezvous, Riley Turner is one of the trappers at the meet-up, and he realizes immediately what kind of danger the ladies are in from unscrupulous men in the crowd. He helps them with their search, and they find so much more than they expected along the way!

Each book in this series will take place during a different year, featuring a different rendezvous. Definitely fodder for fun stories. I pray you love this first book as the Collins sisters embark on the search of a lifetime. 

Blessings!

Misty

MY REVIEW

There is something special about this author that draws me to  her books. She is able to take readers on an adventure while painting a picture of the land and people with vivid details. I was transported back to 1837 with four sisters on a  mission to fulfill their father’s last wish. It will be a dangerous task to track down the woman they are looking for but they have faith that they will succeed. I loved reading about the land they traveled on and the danger that they faced.

This new series promises to be an epic adventure where strength, hope and courage will be tested. I adored the four sister in this first book and loved how they protected each other and was always there if someone needed encouragement. I was very intrigued by the determination they had to seek out a woman who they didn’t know. What if she was not receptive to them? Would this woman reject the gift they have brought? It is truly an emotional story complete with snakes, horse thieves, a handsome man who comes to their aid and a coyote as a pet.

Riley is someone the sisters need to help them locate the woman and I admired how he stepped up to not only travel with them but to also protect them from the treacherous land, weather and unexpected travelers on the  road. With a subtle nudge that the  author gave we discover  Riley and Juniper start to become more that just acquaintances. Their attraction grows slowly and shows how much they are meant for each other.

The ending is one that gave me such hope as the  sisters get closer to finding this special woman. Juniper runs into trouble and I was shocked at who saved her. The author does leave a door open which I hope will continue this journey with Juniper and her sisters. I find myself already getting excited about the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Read an Excerpt

Anticipation tremored in his veins—it had come. The Progenitor’s War had finally arrived.

“Admiral on the bridge!”

“What’s going on? What was that swarm of ships?” Amid grating claxons and pulsing orange lights running around the bulkheads of the Command deck, Fleet Admiral Domitas Deken strode past the offices and conference rooms to the central Command hub of the newly christened Cronus, the flagship of the Symmachian armada. He glared up at the array hovering in the air between him and his handpicked officers, who had been transferred from other ships in the fleet.

“A fleet, sir.” Grim-faced, Captain Lasson Pount stood with the executive officer.

“What fleet?” Domitas demanded. “We have the only fleet in the Quadrants!”

“Unknown, sir.” Commander Wellsey Dimar, onetime XO of the Macedon, recorded the images and waved them to Command. “None we have record of, and the ships are . . .” He frowned at what he saw. “They’re entirely foreign. Fast. Advanced—incredibly so.”

Domitas compared radar to the moments before the arrival of the new ships. “Where’d they come from?”

“As far as we can tell,” Pount said with a shake of his head, “the jumpgate at the Chryzanthe.”

“Can’t be. Baric reported it damaged by that spherical ship.” Never would Domitas forget watching that alien ship explode from the jumpgate and come around, firing. The relay vids of the incident had taken nearly a day to reach the Cronus on its route to Drosero.

“Maybe they slipped through in time?” The captain quirked a blond eyebrow.

“Baric said it was damaged beyond repair,” Dimar noted. “Perhaps the ship came through one of the other Sentinels.”

“They’re not operational yet. With Baric’s flair for the dramatic, it’s possible the Chryzanthe isn’t as damaged as he reported.” Probably wanted a way to keep anyone from nosing into whatever he and that alien were doing. Domitas indicated to the array, then flicked the screen, rolling back the time. “Those ships are moving fast.”

“Like we were standing still,” Dimar noted.

“Any idea where they’re headed?”

“I’ll calculate,” Pount said, tapping on a console, then nodding at the results that splashed through the air between them. “Course and speed suggest a trajectory for Drosero.”

“In fact”—his fingers flew over the console—“the exact same course the first craft took.”

“We think,” Dimar added with a look to Domitas. “The engine signature of the first craft is so slight that, while we can confirm that fleet followed its course, we cannot say if they ended up at the same place.”

Not comforting. “Do we have a lock on the sphere’s final destination?”

“Speculation only, sir.”

Domitas waited for said speculation, and when neither officer expounded, he lifted his brows. “Is there a problem?”

“Pount and Dimar exchanged glances before the XO sighed. “Long-range scans suggest it entered Droseran orbit, but since we have yet to hear from the Damocles, we don’t know if those projections are accurate.”

Drosero. This war sure was waking up the ’verse, wasn’t it?

MY REVIEW

Right at the  beginning of the book we can feel the adrenaline rush as something is amiss. An unknown army of ships are spotted and no explanation of who they are and what they are doing is available. Can you picture yourself telling the captain you have no idea what is going on?

Droseo finds themselves under attack and the journey begins. If you  have not read the other books in the  story, it is a must before  reading this one.  In this epic saga the author gives characters depth while having to fight against enemies. I love how I came to really  sympathize with some of the characters who at first I didn’t like. That is the  beauty of this author; she writes stories that take you into a world that seems real and releases characters to tug on your heart.

It would a very lengthy review if I went through everything that surprised me and gave me shivers as the  quest increased.  With intense scenes and emotions all over  the place I am in awe of how the author was able to give us characters that were strong, fierce and without fear at times as danger drew near. If you are a fan of science fiction, this series will be exciting to read.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
