She only wants a fresh start, but her past might be the only hope to save his life—and the lives of countless innocents.

Reserved pharmacist and recent widower Thomas Harper is also looking for a fresh start for himself and his four children.

But when Thomas falls gravely ill, his only choice is to enlist the help of the local baker with a knowledge of concocting remedies. He’s even more reluctant to admit that Maggie may also be the remedy for his grieving heart. Maggie Galloway’s Prizewinning Recipe

Maggie Galloway was a secondary character in my first Stone Creek Brides novel, Rumors and Promises. As the older sister and housekeeper of hero, Ian McCormick, she liked to have her say. I enjoyed getting to know Maggie as I created her character. She was so much fun to write I knew she needed her own story.

She has a knowledge of remedies from working with her pharmacist husband in the past, but Maggie is also a prizewinning baker because of her creative and cherished recipe for pecan snickerdoodles. I hope you’ll enjoy her recipe.

Increasing the vanilla in her favorite snickerdoodle recipe while adding toasted chopped pecans to the dough and the cinnamon sugar made for the delightful crunch and a nutty taste, which had won her second place in the recipe contest. (From Maggie’s musings in Secrets and Wishes.)

Maggie Galloway’s Pecan Snickerdoodles

½ cup butter, softened

1 cup sugar

¼ teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 ¼ cup flour

½ cup chopped toasted pecans

Cinnamon sugar mixture:

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon finely chopped toasted pecans

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and lightly grease cookie sheet.

Beat butter until creamy. Add 1 cup sugar, baking soda, and cream of tartar, mixing well.

Beat egg and vanilla into the mixture. Slowly add flour and chopped pecans to the mixture.

Set dough in the refrigerator (or the icebox in Maggie’s day) for at least a half an hour to make it easier to handle.

While you’re waiting, mix the cinnamon sugar ingredients together with the 1 tablespoon finely chopped pecans.

When the dough is ready, roll into small balls and roll in cinnamon sugar/nut mixture.

Place a couple of inches apart on the cookie sheet and bake for 9-11 minutes, only until slightly golden brown along the edges. Yield is approximately two dozen cookies.

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed following Maggie on her journey of making a new life for herself after her husband passes away. It was interesting to read about a pharmacist during this time period. Maggie’s  husband has taught her a lot about medicine while they were married. Now that he is gone she has to rely on the local pharmacist in town. There  is a slight problem though when her son and his son have a  fight. It is hard to swallow our pride sometimes.

Thomas has his hands full with all his kids running  around  out of control that not even their housekeeper can control them. He is left on his own trying  to run the pharmacy, set up the soda fountain, take care of his kids when they get the  measles and deal with Maggie who is upset. I liked how the author brought these two together when Thomas becomes very ill and Maggie is  asked to help. It is the perfect solution since she is familiar with medicines but will they be able to get along?

There are moments in the story that reminded me of a movie with Doris Day in it. The kids try  everything they can to make this strange lady leave, but she is determined to get the upper hand. All she needs to do is show them love , grace and understanding. The boys in this story were exasperating at times but Maggie knows what is really  going on. They are missing  their mother.

I loved the baking contest in the story and hints of a romance blossoming between two unlikely people. With faith as the front runner, this story is sure to please those who love historical fiction. The children are the highlight in this book as we see how losing a parent can affect them. They need love and encouragement as they deal with their grief.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Loretta

One of the fun parts I enjoyed writing in The Marine’s Deadly Reunion is the interaction between US Marine, Jake Fisher, and his eighteen-month-old niece, Emma. He knows nothing about caring for a baby. He thinks if he isn’t hungry, Emma isn’t either. During one scene, he glances at her in the rearview mirror. She had tossed everything out of her diaper bag and found her juice cup. He grins, thinking this little human is self-sufficient and they’ll get along just fine.

MY REVIEW

When there is a baby or child involved in a story I immediately become intrigued. l love when a story starts out with action and continues with secrets, danger and surprises. The main characters are equally well written and I liked how they decided to work together to see who and why Jake seems to be the target of someone. Just when you think he is in a safe place, someone finds him and his niece. I couldn’t help starting to suspect  everyone after awhile.

There is an emotional side to the story where I was able  to see vulnerability and a desire  to have deeper faith. What was really good about this story was the characters thinking  that God has left them. Remember that even though we pray for something God will answer it in His time. We may not like the answer we get, but it is all in God’s plan. This  is a great story that had me wanting the story to continue. When I find  characters I like I tend to connect with them and desire to have their story continue. I would love to see Jake and Daria together in a new story.

MY REVIEW

I pray as I write this review that I bless the authors with my words. I completely melted by the sweet writing and encouraging words. Reading that a woman spoke up and said that she is bipolar and taking medicine for it made me want to clap out loud. Why you ask? It is simple.  This woman still has faith that she will be healed but continues in her journey of being a leader. This is an excellent example of how God can use anyone.

Each woman who contributed to this book is transparent and shares their struggles. One may have gone through abuse while another is dealing with issues of approval but each one is a leader. Their stories are powerful and encouraging. I loved each individual story and appreciated how these women are an example of leading with their whole hearts even during a trial. Thank  you to each woman who shared, overcame and have a heart to share to help others.

About the Author

Daphne Self, formerly published under the name D.M. Webb, resides in Iowa. As a Mississippian transplant, she spends her days in the Midwest state writing, editing, reading, antiquing, and planning adventures. She pursues her dream as an editor and author with one goal in mind: To Glorify His Name. Daphne is also an avid reader who devours book in many genres. As a long time member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and Realm Makers, she volunteers her time helping published and unpublished authors.

More from Daphne

It started as an idea back in the late 90s. It came to fruition in May 2021. The inspiration was this: salvation is free. That began the questions of: what if someone committed horrible acts, what if that person was indoctrinated and changed, what if when faced with the truth how would he react, and finally, what story from the Bible would work for my character? Of course, the story of Saul of Tarsus (Paul) came to mind. Blood was on his hands, yet he found salvation in Christ. And the story of Samson gave a bit of a parallel to my story, too.

I wrote this book before the show Halo was released, yet I had been playing the Halo video game for years. I’ve always enjoyed the backstory of Master Chief, so the main character of When Legends Rise is a bit like Master Chief John-117. Plus, if you have seen The Mandalorian, then you will see a few common themes between my book and that show. There’s also a bit of a Star Trek vibe in that I use “tech” speak and plausible science.

And what began as one book has now evolved into a 5-book series titled Legends of Light. Book two, What Legends Become, releases in June 2024 and follows the family and the continuing story of salvation, persecution, faith, and hope.

MY REVIEW

What an exciting story filled with suspense. I liked the feel of another world and the escape that Jules goes through. The attack he endured injured him  so badly that  he was in recovery for awhile. He won’t forget that his friend saved him. Now what were the words he told Jules  before he left ? His friend didn’t want to say much, but the world that Juliet thought he knew has changed.

With a little romance mixed in the story it is a nice read with faith elements that I appreciated. With a theme of  a Star Wars feel this book has action, weapons that  only be described as advanced and enemies that will do anything to complete their mission. I can’t wait for the next installment in this exciting series. Get ready for an adventure that gives you a front row seat to edge of your seat to this thriller.

More from Tracy

When life knocks you down, where do you go for hope?

We all want to be brave, but sometimes circumstances overwhelm us. Health declines, bank accounts empty, and friends disappear. No matter the disappointments, one absolute certainty we can count on is God. He will stand with us through every adversity.

Ideas for Refuge of Grace: Finding Your Safe Place began at 3 a.m. on a January workday in 2021. I tossed and turned in bed, wondering how I could continue teaching in a public school under all the pandemic constraints. We wore masks, developed lesson plans for both in-class instruction and online modules, and juggled a revolving door of student quarantines with absences.

Fear surrounded us on all sides.

Others also struggled. My older son managed an emergency department in a large city and had to find ways to supply unprecedented needs. My younger son worked in the financial industry and watched markets reel. Neighbors lost jobs and income.

How could we model resilience and move forward?

I turned to the Bible for inspiration and studied stories about how believers overcame hardship. Six months and 22 chapters later—all the while teaching full time—this collection renewed hope and kept me going.

My prayer is that reading these Bible promises of God’s faithfulness also will empower you.

MY REVIEW

A beautifully written book that brings peace to you. I liked how each chapter is a different topic that is easy to relate  to. The author gives us much to think about as we go through the study. We are reminded not to forget God and all the things He has done for us. There are several Biblical figures that the author uses to illustrate how He was there as these people were in the midst of a trial. The scriptures are well placed in the book.

One thing I thought was very important in the book was not to just go to God when you need something. We need to have a good relationship with Him every day. Praise Him  in the  good and the bad. Jeremiah is a good example of relying on God. Jeremiah was sent out to speak to others knowing that God would give him the right words to say. Do we sometimes speak to others without being  led by God?  If we see someone stumbling in their walk, we should go to them  after praying and He will give you the words to say.

I liked the  way  the author recounts stories from the Bible and applies them  to our everyday struggles and triumphs. The book is a comfort and instills God’s Word in a loving way. This would make an excellent book to use in a group Bible Study or as a study for personal growth.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
