Whenever I think of telling a story, I have Indiana Jones swapping the bag of sand with the golden idol. The spirits swirling around the Nazis and the uncanny escapes from the clutches of death.

I spent my early adult years stomping through biblical lands with the military, experiencing life that seemed to represent many stages of evolution. Seeing the differences in how people value life, faith, and each other.

I experienced the heart-pounding adrenaline of adventure, the edge of life moments, and the strange stillness that follows them. The sights, sounds, and smells of those places stay with you forever.

MY REVIEW

What a great adventure this book takes readers on. I really enjoyed following Joshua as he uncovers a mystery from long ago. He has no idea how this discovery will turn his life upside down if he finds it. The author does a good job of describing the Holy Land that Joshua has traveled to. With clues , he and Noa begin to put together a puzzle that get them excited. Will they find something that has been hidden for years?

I was a bit surprised at the group that was following them with weapons. This is definitely not a good sign when gunfire erupts. I was also suspicious of someone who joined them on their search. At times I thought that there was so much going on I couldn’t keep up. Since this is a fiction book I understand that some Biblical references were not quite right but I was hoping for more authenticity.

My story, Before the Dawn, is set in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. As a girl born and raised in Central Kansas, the first time I visited mountains, I was in awe…and also a little worried. Having grown up in a land where you can watch your dog run away for three straight days, not being able to see very far when in between mountains was a bit claustrophobic.

My children, growing up in SE Minnesota, had a similar experience. We were able to take the kids to Colorado several years ago, which is where I first became interested the history of Colorado Mining.

We took the kids to Idaho Springs, where we toured a mine and ore processing facility from the 1880’s. The Argo Mine was fascinating. When I ask my kids about what they remember, it’s always the panning for gold. My daughter reminded me that I was the first in the family to find any gold in my pan, a few little bright flakes, upon which many an adventurer has wagered his life.

The kids also got to sift through a box of sand and dirt to find colorful stones. As my son was enamored with agates and polished rocks at the time, this was the highlight for him.

When I wrote Before the Dawn, I tried to make the setting a character. The story is so tied to the setting, that if I changed where the story took place, it wouldn’t be the same story at all.

I hope, as you read Before the Dawn, you are drawn into the mountains, that you can feel a bit of the same sense of awe that I felt the first time this prairie girl saw the Rockies.

MY REVIEW

A beautiful story that illustrates pride, forgiveness and trusting God. The book centers around David and Karen. You can feel the excitement in Karen as she eagerly awaits reuniting with her fiancé. She has no idea that her entire life is about to change. I like how the author gives Karen decisions that could cause heartache. Will she be able to convince David to marry her?

David has been through a tragic accident that has caused him to be blind. He sits in his room feeling sorry for himself and allowing anger to settle in his heart. I can’t imagine what it would be like to suddenly lose your vision. His world is turned upside down and decides that he needs to let Karen go. I did chuckle at how naive he was. Does he have any idea how much Karen loves him? She will not give up so easily.

I had no idea that secrets, deceit and danger were about to enter Karen & David’s lives. The story delivers an adventure with unexpected challenges and faith that deepens when the couple turn to God for direction.

About the Author

Steven Rogers is a Christian author of the “Reluctant Pilgrim” series. His most recent novel, A Year in the Room,was published in November 2024. The book is a sequel to his debut novel, Into the Room, which was published in 2021. In addition to other awards, both books were finalists for the American Christian Fiction Writers’ Carol Awards.

Steven loves the process of writing, especially exploring characters that are either broken or facing unfamiliar situations. They are usually ordinary people confronting their internal demons and the challenges of day-to-day living. He also enjoys bringing his stories to a happy, or at least hopeful, ending.

Steven serves as the Director of Royalty Management and Acquisitions Editor at Elk Lake Publishing, Inc. In addition to writing, Steven is a speaker and enjoys sharing his journey of faith and exploring how God’s word applies in the modern world.

Steven, a proud father of three adult children and one incredibly lucky son-in-law, is happily married to his wife of thirty-nine years, Kathy. They live in Richmond, Virginia.

When I first began writing, I was trying to become the next Stephen King. I was inventing serial killers, violently murdering people, and using time travel as a plot concept. At the time, I didn’t know there was a robust and far-reaching Christian Fiction market.

Things changed in 2017 while I was on a flight to Israel. Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, I had the thought, I wonder what would happen if I were an alcoholic who has just been released from rehab, and I HAD to take this trip? I quickly invented my character, Ben Cahill, and took him on the tour with me.

When we got back home, my wife asked what I’d been writing in my journal during our visit to The Holy Land. After I explained, the following exchange took place:

Her: “You may have a book there.”

Me: “That’s not my genre.”

Her (using much gentler language): “You’re not published yet; you don’t have a genre.”

To make a long story short, the result of this conversation was my first novel, Into the Room.

A Year in the Room is Book 2 in my “Reluctant Pilgrim” series. I wrote the book because I was compelled to continue telling Ben Cahill’s story and explore an alcoholic/addict during the first year of recovery.

Many writers fall in love with their characters. I am no different. Writing about Ben has been a blessing for me. His story has significantly impacted my personal spiritual journey, taught me to forgive, and brought me closer to God. I will be forever grateful for his impact on my life.

MY REVIEW

There are several very important points I want to make about this book. Ben hits rock bottom and comes back from a trip to Israel to reclaim his life. I enjoyed reading about his journey. It was painful, rewarding and redeeming. Ben is surrounded by Godly people who are there to stand with him, pray with him and encourage him. Hitting the lowest point in his life causes him to realize the mess he has created. It seemed like chaos was his life until one day it caught up with him.

The subjects in the story could be triggers for some but I want to assure readers it is done to expose lies and darkness that cause families to fall apart. Ben desperately wants his family back. I know it was difficult for him to see how distant his son was but Ben caused pain and divided the family.

There is much hope in the book though. It is important to see how people came together to lift Ben up. I liked how he was given tough love in a Godly way. His journey will take him overseas again where he starts to surrender to God. I loved how humble he became and allowed shame to not be part of him anymore. Addiction is real, ugly and destructive . The author does a tremendous job of showing the steps needed to reconcile first with God then family. If you are reading this book and are going through something similar, seek help. God is here to help restore, renew and give forgiveness. Never give up. There is always hope.
