About the Author

Kay DiBianca is a former software developer and IT manager who retired to a life of mystery. She’s the award-winning author of six mystery novels. Her books have been honored with numerous awards including an Illumination Award, Eric Hoffer Awards, a Reader Views Award, a Readers’ Favorite Award, and a Memphis Libraries Richard Wright Literary Award.

An avid runner, Kay can often be found at a local track, on her treadmill, or at a park near her home. Kay and her husband, Frank, live, run, and write in Memphis, TN.

My third mystery novel, Time After Tyme, featured two young secondary characters, Reen and Joanie, who were so popular, I was encouraged to give them their own series. I had been thinking of doing a middle grade novel for a while, so I began to put together thoughts for a Reen & Joanie Detective Agency series.

At about that same time, my husband and I made several trips to Manhattan for health reasons. (Everything is fine now.) During those trips, we used our spare time to explore the museums and famous places in the city, and that became the setting for Knights in Manhattan.

While writing the book, I had great fun seeing the city through the eyes of the two youngsters as they chased criminals in and around some of New York’s most famous landmarks. This is the second book in the Reen & Joanie Detective Agency series, and I’m excited to see where the girls will travel in the upcoming books.

MY REVIEW

A fun adventure is waiting for all in this story. I enjoyed all the excitement that Reen and Joanie have when they travel to the big city. The beginning was pretty funny on the airplane. It is not easy to tell a young child to stay still on a plane. A clue is found in the bathroom that starts an exciting mystery for our young detectives.

The characters in the story are inquisitive and eager to solve the mystery. The author gives readers clues to help follow the steps as Reen and Joanie take on their next case. Being in New York can be overwhelming but these kids are ready to take on whatever awaits them. I liked the faith element in the story as well as how the author delivers a map so to speak that leads our two young detectives into a few laughs, lessons that are valuable for everyone and working together.

“Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow.” Amish proverb

Whenever I visit my Amish friends, I always make a point of wandering out to their vegetable gardens to see what’s growing. Their gardens, usually not far from the kitchen, are bigger than most people’s backyards. Gardens, for the Amish, are a family affair. Husbands help their wives ready the soil and add the homebrewed fertilizer (ahem, manure), children help their moms plant, weed, and harvest.

Like so many parts of the Plain life, their value of the home garden—for the sake of nutrition, for sustenance, for well-being—is a wonderful example to those of us who weren’t farm-raised. They’ve been living a sustainable life filled with fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables for over four hundred years. The rest of us are just catching on.

One Amish mom told me a story about her daughter, the youngest of seven. “This girl was a born worrier. Whenever she started on her worry loop, I would send her out to weed in the garden. When she came back in, her worries were gone. There’s just something about weeding that helps a soul settle down.”

I could expand that thought a little further. There’s just something about gardening that helps a soul settle down.

So, it’s late on Saturday and I just wrapped up a very long week. I spoke at three book events and finished the first draft (the drafty-draft) of a novel. I can’t stop thinking about the novel. Is it a mess? As tired as I am, tonight I don’t think I’ve got one more word in me—not to speak, not to write. I’m spent! Done. My husband is out for the evening, so I had a few hours alone at home to relax.

What did I do?

I planted in my garden: lettuce and radishes and carrots. As I dug in the spongy soil, I could feel my soul settle. Worry and exhaustion slipped away as I scattered seeds into furrows. Little by little, that wonderful God-given sense of re-creation returned. Tomorrow, I would write again. Time spent in my little garden does that for me. It renews me and gives me a hope for the future.

Or, at the very least, a good salad.

Overnight Blueberry French Toast

On a sunny July morning, we were served this breakfast dish at an Amish friend’s home and my husband couldn’t stop talking about it. You might be shocked at the amount of eggs, but don’t skimp! It’s worth every bite.

12 slices bread cut in 1” cubes

8 oz. cream cheese cut in ¾” cubes

1 ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries

12 eggs

1/3 cup maple syrup

2 cups milk

Place half the bread cubes in a 9×13 baking dish. Top with cream cheese blueberries and the remaining bread. Beat eggs, syrup and milk and pour evenly over bread.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until well done.

MY REVIEW

This book was very hard to put down. I became so invested in the characters that I found myself shutting everything else out. The author has a special gift of illustrating struggles that we can all relate to. I could easily relate to being a people pleaser like Evie. She strives to help others even if they seem to be taking advantage of her. I loved her gentle spirit and compassion for others. She has a hard time saying no to people as her insecurity starts to overcome her.

Ruth also known as ‘Dok” is overwhelmed with patients. She needs help but when she finds herself with two new doctors she can’t quite trust them. Dok doesn’t want to let go of her responsibilities and finds reasons not to be a mentor to the new doctors ready and eager to learn. She is very protective of her Amish patients who are not comfortable with the English doctors.

I liked how the story focuses on postpartum depression that women suffer with. It is usually not talked about but many women have gone through it. I appreciate the author highlighting this subject and giving thoughtful ways to address it. The story also talks about women needing to feel more valued. It is important to know that we are all valued and wanted. When we face difficult situations, turn to God for direction.

AI looms everywhere. It lives on our devices, occupies the public discourse, and haunts the horizon. Whatever tomorrow brings, AI will be there.

Singularity—the point at which artificial intelligence becomes self-aware—is an old prophecy. Now the public is finally beginning to believe it. We already have a sense that AI is escaping us. That we don’t really understand it, can’t fully control it, and don’t know what it is becoming.

AI could go rogue. It could even develop something that might be called a soul.

Congress has held hearings on AI. Hollywood has released doomsday movies. The prophets of the twenty-first century have written books and articles and social media posts, trumpeting the warning signal. All are messengers of the same idea: AI, when it becomes ascendant, will not be benevolent.

Yet there is dissent. There are those who think that AI will prove both beneficial and benevolent. If I may put it this way (they wouldn’t), they welcome our new AI overlords.

The eagerness with which some people have awaited singularity is striking. There is a strain of religious feeling toward AI—not as it is, to be sure, but as it will be. They are hoping for the day when AI, surpassing humanity, will guide us into a better world. They want, as so many people have wanted, a superhuman intelligence to show them the way.

When I wrote Singularity, I incorporated both antagonism and religiosity toward AI. I have my own viewpoint, but I wanted to represent the most likely reactions if AI turned against us. The divide over whether such an AI should be treated as a person or a machine, a potential friend or an irreconcilable enemy, would be sharp and weighty. And the AI could not be defined without also defining humanity.

The singularity of AI confronts us with the singularity of humanity. Are we truly unique, truly singular? And if so, how?

These questions create the double meaning of the title Singularity. I wrote Singularity to explore the concept of AI. By a logical necessity, it became also an inquiry into the nature of humanity. This novel presents one vision of the singularity, and raises the universal questions of artificial intelligence.

MY REVIEW

I had an idea going into this book that it was going to be fast pace so I was ready for the adventure. The author does not disappoint with action and mystery that kept me on my toes. With intrigue and a deep look into AI we find ourselves in the world where things don’t often make sense.

The characters are an eclectic bunch with agendas that don’t always match each other. I did like the undertone of doing the right thing but had a hard time following the storyline at times. AI is the talk these days and this story does represent the curious to some degree. The question arises that we all have a choice. Do we choose to do the right thing or go against the grain for power and greed?

Lila is a breakout character who I really liked. As she joins forces to try to stop AI from taking over, we witness danger, intrigue and questions of how far can AI go. I don’t know much about this new technology but it does surprise me how intelligent it is. Can you imagine being overtaken by something hard to explain?

The author certainly uses creative ways to bring readers into a world like no other. The team is formed for a mission to find a hacker who is stealing data. The government needs to stop the hacker before destruction comes. I did like this part because patriotism is at the center of this operation. The President wants whoever is responsible for this breach to be stopped at whatever means necessary. For science fiction fans, this will definitely be one to read.

Did you, like me, grow up watching westerns on tv? I watched often in reruns as the heyday of the TV Western was waning about the time I was born. But I watched Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, Bonanza, Have Gun, Will Travel, The Rifleman, Wagon Train, The Virginian, and more.

And so grew my love of the old west, of cowboys, cattle drives, frontier justices, and rolling tumbleweeds.

I also read westerns. Zane Grey, Louis L’Amour, Abel Shott (Yes, that was the pen name of the man who wrote the series called Solo Strand: The Silver Kid.) I was a firm believer in The Code of the West.

So, when it came time to write my own ‘cowboy book’ I took much inspiration from the screen and the page.

Clara and the Cowboy is the story of Alec and Clara, a cowboy and the ranch owner’s daughter. There’s cattle rustling, gunplay, good vs. evil, a damsel in distress…all the best parts of western classic lore. I had such fun writing it, influenced by those who had written the genre before me.

The setting was chosen (Southwest Idaho) because of a series of books I had read as a teen, written by Glenn Balch, about a ranching family near Nampa, ID. I’ve never been to that part of the US, but I felt as if I had because I read those books (many times!)

As I look back on the hours I spent watching classic westerns on tv and reading western fiction, I’m reminded of the impact they had on my life. How they taught that good and evil exist in the world, and that it takes bravery to stand up and do the right thing. I learned that honor and integrity do not come without cost, and that actions have consequences.

Who would have thought that watching a rerun of The Big Valley would instill a desire to embrace the cowboy culture through my own fiction?

I hope you enjoy reading Clara and the Cowboy, and that perhaps it takes you back to your own childhood of rooting for the man in the white hat to get the girl he loves before the credits roll.

MY REVIEW

I love a good book that will take me to a place where hard work and faith combine. This story is rich in the rugged country life that illustrates how hard it can be as a rancher. Day after day the cattle need attention, horses need exercise and of course the everyday chores to keep everyone fed. I really liked how the author uses creative words to help readers visualize ranch life.

I love how the story starts with an unexpected situation that finds Clara in grave danger. I can’t imagine being in a stagecoach in the middle of nowhere and suddenly danger surrounds you. The only thought on Clara’s mind was getting home to see her father after a long time away. She is also secretly excited to see a certain man who has had her heart for a very long time.

With a mystery of cattle and horses missing on the ranch the story takes a serious tone as suspicion swirls around. Alec seems to be a little distant with Clara when she first arrives. Maybe he is too focused on the ranch but I think he doesn’t want to show his emotions just yet. I did feel his uneasiness when he goes to town with Clara. His father’s bad reputation is well known and reflects on him and his brothers. Have you ever had a family member who did something wrong and others judge you because of it?

I like the illustration of turmoil Clara and Alec face as they both walk through forgiveness. Alec wants to be able to forgive his father but the pain of rejection runs deep. I’m sure we each have faced a similar situation that only God can heal. With Steadman trying to get Clara’s attention, Alec needs to wake up before he loses the woman he loves. I was suspicious of Steadman and wonder if his kindness to Clara is real or an act.

I appreciate how the author illustrates how bitterness can destroy a person if they don’t ask God for help. Trying to seek revenge when hatred is in your heart can only lead to your downfall. Don’t miss this exciting adventure filled with cattle rustlers, greed and an exceptional lesson in forgiveness.
