Amy R Anguish grew up a preacher’s kid, and in spite of having lived in seven different states that are all south of the Mason Dixon line, she is not a football fan. Currently, she resides in Tennessee with her husband, daughter, and son, and usually a bossy cat or two. Amy has an English degree from Freed-Hardeman University that she intends to use to glorify God, and she wants her stories to show that while Christians face real struggles, it can still work out for good.

Fairest Inn All was never supposed to exist. Honestly, I never expected to write a fairy-tale retelling, even though it’s one of my favorite tropes to read. But then God gave me the idea to write Rendersella a few years ago. I was inspired by a trip to West Virginia and the story would not leave me alone until I got it all typed up. And I had an absolute blast weaving in characters and plot points that reminded the reader enough of the classic fairy tale, but still told a new story.

Thing is, by the end of writing Rendersella, I discovered something. One, Ella’s best friend Kari was supposed to be Snow White. And two, that her stepsister Bellamy needed to have her own story told in Beauty School and the Beast (releasing March 2027). This put a crimp in my plans. After all, I’d barely reconciled myself to telling one fairy-tale retelling, to say nothing of three. But the characters wouldn’t hush.

So, with Kari’s story itching to be told, I had some decisions to make. I knew it was going to be in Brunswick, Georgia with her seven uncles and her ornery brother Jake. But how to weave in all the elements that make a story sing fairy tale without it sounding like every other version?

Well, one of the changes I made was to name the uncles after apples. After all, their last name is Apple, and so is the name of their old inn. That was fun, picking from the thousands of apple names to find ones that matched the personalities of the gentlemen. Then, I brought in an evil character named Queenie to be the nemesis of Kari, aka Snow. Queenie wants the inn and will stoop to all sorts of levels to try and get it. And, of course, I needed a princely character. Enter Royal Barrett, son of a man on the Chamber of Commerce. He is helping organize a contest called the Fairest Inn All, meant to encourage the owners of old inns to revamp and preserve the history of the area. Add in some fun scenes, a hurricane, and a bit of “poison,” and voila!

If you think that sounds too easy, you’re right. I agonized over several of the parts of this book. But it turned out so much fun, in my opinion. And you might even discover a few extra characters along the way.

Retelling stories that are already much-loved, I’ve discovered, is a delicate balance. It’s hard to make sure everything comes out familiar enough while still new. But when it works, it leaves the reader wanting even more. And maybe even the author too. Hence, another fairy-tale retelling from me with another on the way next year.

MY REVIEW

A contemporary retelling of a classic fairy tale awaits readers in this book. I loved how the author developed her characters in a way that brings a fresh look at believing in yourself and learning to trust. The uncles in the story are delightful and very protective of family. I did get a few laughs the more I was able to see their personalities shine.

Kari is so focused on remolding her uncles inn that she may miss her chance for love. I felt like at times she had blinders on whenever Royal would come around. The poor guy wants to help Kari but he also sees a chance at a relationship with her. Kari is so afraid of getting hurt she won’t take a chance on a forever happy ending.

The book is easy to read and illustrates how faith helps in this story filled with charming characters. There are also a few other characters that add to the story including her brother. With a gifted pen, the author does an amazing job of retelling a fairy tale with a modern twist. Do you believe in happily forever?

My debut novel, Just Another Home, was released in 2024. It’s about a teen in the foster care system, Sam, who is placed with a couple in their fifties, John and Abbie. Something most people don’t know about Just Another Home is that the setting of the story, Franklin, Tennessee, was not just some random town I chose for the backdrop of Sam’s story. Franklin is a place I’ve visited many times and is near and dear to my heart.

In 2015, our daughter and son-in-law moved to Franklin, a little over three hours from our home in Indiana where my husband and I have lived all our lives. We visited frequently. We loved the small-town, rural feel of Franklin, with its rolling fields and farms and the scenic beauty of the nearby Natchez Trace Parkway. It also satisfied everything we wanted in a small city with its unique shops, boutiques and locally-owned restaurants on Main Street and nearby Cool Springs.

My favorite things about Franklin, though, were the great family weekends we spent there. The memories of one weekend in particular always makes me smile. We attended the Dickens of a Christmas Festival on the square in downtown Franklin. It was just one of the many festivals they have there, but the one I love the most.

It was a blustery, cold day for Middle Tennessee. The high was only 30 degrees and snow flurries were flying. With coffee in hand, we braved the downtown streets and met all our favorite Dickens characters—Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley, and Tiny Tim, among others. There were vendor booths, and a giant, beautifully lit Christmas tree in the square. It was a beautiful, Christmas-like day with our whole family together in the same place at the same time. When we got too cold to walk anymore, we ducked into a pizzeria to have lunch and warm up. Then we finished the day at our favorite local bookstore there, Landmark. This mother’s heart was full.

Does all of this sound familiar? If you’ve read Just Another Home, it does, because this exact story is played out as Sam attends the Dickens Festival with his foster family. It’s the first time he is genuinely happy since he can remember. He can enjoy the day with them without having to fight for survival or worry about what tomorrow brings. For once he is free and his heart is not troubled.

Kind of like this momma’s heart, having her whole family in the same place at the same time.

MY REVIEW

Be prepared to need tissues as you read this story. The author does an excellent job of illustrating a young teen who is trapped in foster care. Sam finds himself lost and unwanted as he is shuffled from one home to another. He lacks trust, confidence and a relationship with God. Sam yearns for a family that wants him and will show him love. Can you imagine having no real place to call your own and never be able to make lasting friends because you never know when you will have to go to a new place?

I think Sam is starting to give up when he is placed with John & Abbie. They agree to let him stay for a few days since they really didn’t want to foster a teenager. God has other plans for them and soon find themselves wanting to help Sam. There are moments they could have called the social worker to come get Sam, but they know Sam was placed with them for a reason.

I love how this couple show grace and unconditional love to Sam. It is not an easy road for them as Sam starts to push them away. All his life he has never felt wanted. When he sees that John & Allie show that they care, he isn’t sure if it is real. I love how God is there guiding Sam even though he is mad at God.

I liked how John & Allie reminded Sam that even though he may mess up they will always be there for him. He doesn’t believe them but soon he will be shown just how much he is truly loved. There is a very beautiful moment in the story that illustrates how God will meet you right where you are. I love how God never gives up on us.

MY REVIEW

A book written by an author suddenly brings danger and suspense I The action is good and gives readers much to try to figure out. Kelly had no idea that the book she wrote would cause chaos in her life. When threats come her way she knows she needs help. A little romance added to the book was nicely done . The story kept me on my toes and I'm excited that there will be more from this author. There were a few times I did get a bit confused because the storyline jumped around too much.

I think of Calico Canyon as my husband’s life growing up.

He is sixth of seven sons. A family of all boys.

His mom, my mother-in-law, was the coolest lady I’ve ever known. That woman could handle everything and never be other than sweet and generous and so funny. She’s gone now but for all the years she was in my life, I’d say she was my best friend.

All those boys! She was the living embodiment of rolling with the punches and not sweating the small stuff.

Those brothers…they are the inspiration for this book but my mother-in-law read it and said, her boys were so much better behaved than those boys in Calico Canyon, and she’s right about that…no boys could be worse than the Reeves boys.

This book is the embodiment of the forced marriage. Two people caught in a completely innocent compromising situation. Nothing will do but immediate marriage after Grace spends the night with Daniel.

But there were five boys in that cave with us!

Not gonna save you, Grace.

Grace is a school marm and those boys have been a torment to her ever since they’d shown up at school. Now, due to Grace needing to hide from her abusive, adoptive father, who has tracked her down to this tiny town in Texas, she’d ended up under a tarp over Daniel’s wagon. He takes her home and she has no choice but to stay quiet under that tarp until it’s too

late to take her back.

The wedding scene from Calico Canyon was, for many years, what I considered the funniest thing I’d ever written. Very hard work to get that scene right. Grace is confused when she’s found with Daniel by the parson. Oh, good. Someone who will give me a ride back to town.

The parson is saying the vows. Grace is happy to take a ride. The parson’s wife is urging the parson to hurry. Daniel is trying to put a stop to it. The boys are all horrified to see their hated teacher.

Mayhem ensues.

It was a lot of fun to get right. Lots of moving parts in that scene.

And then a blizzard snows the gap that leads into their canyon shut and they have to spend the winter trying not to kill each other. And of course, falling in love.

I hope you enjoy Calico Canyon. The fumbling, clueless cowboy. The innocent, befuddled school marm. The unruly boys who don’t see why she can’t cook and why she won’t go home.

The danger, circling the outside of their canyon, waiting for the gap to open so he can avenge himself on the daughter that send him to prison.

MY REVIEW

A big shout out to the author for making me laugh so hard as I read the opening pages. Grace is a teacher who loves her job. On one particular trying day chaos breaks out in the classroom. Like a domino effect, one thing leads to another calamity where Grace finds herself embarrassed in front of her students. The unruly boys who have caused this disruption denies everything. I think Grace has reached her limit and starts to take back control until their dad shows up. He is not happy witnessing the teacher threatening to hit one of his children. Little does anyone know that this man will protect Grace one day.

Daniel is rough around the edges and doesn’t take kindly to anyone who mistreats his boys. He takes it upon himself to make sure Grace is reprimanded for her actions at school. Does he have any idea that his boys are a tad bit hard to handle? I do like how much Daniel cares for his boys even though they may not always show their appreciation for the sacrifice their father gives to keep them fed and safe.

The story proves to be much more than just a glimpse at family but the deeper meaning of trust. Grace and Daniel find themselves in a predicament that brings them together in a way neither really wanted. I liked how Grace finally showed her courageous side and begins to open her heart to the children she never thought she could care about. Oh how I loved these boys and how much they needed to find security and the love of a mother.

There is danger in the story which adds a depth of learning to trust others. The story also illustrates how two people need to allow God to direct their paths. Daniel is fighting a battle within him that brings out the bitterness he has deep rooted in his heart. With so much unanswered questions and secrets, will Grace and Daniel have a relationship grounded in faith?

Cracking the Cover Code

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” We’ve all heard it. We’ve all said it.

We’ve all done it.

We try not to, but the reality is that a book’s cover does influence us. Things pleasing to the eye attract us. Our interest is piqued by the mysterious. Color palettes and designs offer clues about the type of story within. Whether we’re buying online, browsing a bookstore, or selecting our next read from our shelves, the cover often sways our decision.

Thus, covers are designed to draw the interest of those who would most enjoy the story, and Perplexity is no different. So, is this novel for you? Perhaps taking a closer look at cover’s design will answer the question.

The first thing you might notice about Perplexity’s cover is it colors, especially if you’re familiar with Illuminary, which is book one in this series. Whereas Illuminary was bold and vibrant to reflect its India-inspired culture, Perplexity obviously has a much cooler and muted color palette. This reflects the wintry season of this story, both physically and emotionally. The snowflake motif emphasizes this.

This should tell you immediately that if you’re wishing for an upbeat comedy, this isn’t it. You probably need to find a much different cover (and book) than this one. But if you’re looking for a thoughtful read, dealing with slightly heavier topics, Perplexity might be worth a second look.

Now alongside the snowflakes, you might notice a bunch of gears. Those reveal inventions and technology are important to the setting of Perplexity. Gears are also a popular cover motif for books in the steampunk genre. Their subtle use in the design therefore implies a light steampunk element—a world with a Victorian vibe and steam-powered technology.

So are you not a fan of the Victorian era? Do you prefer to read about the real, contemporary world? Perplexity probably shouldn’t be your next read. But if you’re a fan of Jules Verne or fiction that mixes the fantastical with the historical, Perplexity might be your cup of tea.

The third major element of the cover are the odd objects tucked throughout the art work, like a hidden-object picture: An automobile, a pocket watch, a beaded bracelet, an envelope, a carousel horse, a crow, a key. Seven items, which seem completely random and unrelated. Yet they were carefully selected for the cover from a myriad of objects. What does it all mean? Ah, that is the hint of the puzzles the characters must unravel and the mysteries they must solve.

Not a puzzle fan? Hate trying to solve riddles? Then it’s time for you to search elsewhere for a book. But if you love escape rooms, National Treasure, and Amazing Race, your brain might just love unlocking all Perplexity has to offer.

So there. We’ve cracked the code of Perplexity’s cover, a code that tells us of a thoughtful story with a light Victorian/steampunk vibe and puzzles galore. Now it’s time for you decide: Does that sound like a story worth cracking into?

MY REVIEW

If you haven’t read the first book in this series it is a must. The author delivers a cast of characters who intrigued me. Opening the story we find Yosi grieving the loss of her father. I liked how it is illustrated that grief is a process and does take time. Slowly Yosi begins to understand that grief can overwhelm you but must be dealt with. The mystery starts right away in the book with the suspicious death of Yosi’s father. Is it possible that he was murdered? If so who and for what purpose? Is greed and power behind his death?

With so much going on in the story I was kept on my toes. Xander is also dealing with the death of his father. This loss catapults Xander to a role he didn’t really want. Can he run the kingdom even though his heart is not fully into it? Xander finds himself trying to uncover miss handled funds that put him in the middle of danger. He soon discovers that someone wants him dead. Will he be able to survive the chaos around him?

I liked how Xander wants to help Yosi when he discovers that she has been kidnapped. Throughout the story we witness threads of faith and determination for the truth. This is definitely a story to read as the author’s gift of writing a story where good vs evil collide is powerful.
