About the Author

A former coin collector for over fifty years, Dennis combines his love for the Bible, children’s literature, and sharing stories about the history behind coins.

Dennis retired as a professor of speech communications from Barstow Community College. He and his wife served as English and public speaking teachers ten summers overseas.

Dennis became a sustaining member of the Numismatic Association of Southern California in 1979. He is also a life member of the American Numismatic Association.

Dennis is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and a Fellow of the National Writing Project.

MY REVIEW

With the addition of an audio for this book, it will bring a lot of fun listening to it. There is nothing better than hearing a favorite book read aloud. The characters are charming and you feel like you are a part of the story. 

A cute story that  follows Marcus and his father on a journey to a mine. There Marcus finds out how to make coins. When he makes one with the image of the Emperor on one side he is excited. He worries that he will mess up the mission with his father because he is so clumsy. I loved reading how his father was so encouraging. 

When Marcus and his father camp near Jerusalem they encounter thieves who are after the coins. What excitement it was  for Marcus when he warns everyone at the camp about the thieves. They think he is a hero now and his father is very proud of him. 

The moment Marcus sees Jesus in the market place he asks who Jesus is. Marcus questions what Jesus says and makes him curious who this man who  calls himself Jesus.  The illustrations in the book fit nicely with the story. Marcus begins to want to know more about Jesus. This book is a good book for young children and the information at the back will guide readers to learn more about the coin and various topics to teach children more about the history of the coin. Nice  story to help children learn about Jesus along with history that will give moments to use as a teaching tool.

My daughter gifted me a tee shirt for Christmas with an image of a typewriter and the slogan: I make things up. That’s a novelist job! 

Where we and our family came from and how we arrived where we are today, there’s a story in each of us. I find myself often pondering people’s back stories. I regret knowing only the tiniest bits of my own family’s backstory. When I had the opportunity to ask the questions, I was too naive to know what to ask. Decades later I made it up. Tangled Promises was born.

A recurring theme as I wrote Tangled Promises focuses on this verse: The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. ~Proverbs 22:2

Clara and Daniel lived in the same world. She the daughter of the Baron and he the family’s humble carriage driver. Very much in love with one another, but their social status dictated rules created to forbid their union. 

In a world so shattered by differences, God calls us to see we’re all the same in His eyes. From the unborn baby to kings in the land, we’re all cherished by Him. He calls us to forgiveness and love.

MY REVIEW 

I enjoyed the setting and learning more about the way of life during this time period. I felt bad for Clara whose father was trying to force her to marry someone she did not love. This man that  her father has chosen for her is disrespectful, greedy and without any remorse for what he had done to Clara. 

I loved following  Clara as she goes to Paris.  Hoping to get away  and spend time with an old friend, she finds herself starting to ask what plans God has for her. The author delivers a character who struggles at times with trust and illustrates how our faith can see us through difficult times. With a few twists and an unexpected ending I hope to read more from this author.

The story of Cynthia Anne Parker, the most famous captive of the nineteenth century, haunted my heart for a couple of decades. Abducted from one world, adopted into another, and then stolen back, Cynthia Ann’s story of love and unrepairable loss captured my heart. All the more so since it was fact, not fiction.

I longed to give her a second chance. So I developed a character who was similar to Cynthia, started the narrative at the moment of crisis, and wrote a different trajectory. I couldn’t give Cynthia a happy ending, but I could give Eyes-Like-Sky a story of love and hope taking root in the midst of devastating loss.

Cynthia was taken captive by Comanches at age nine during an attack on her family’s fort in the Texas frontier in 1836. Her father and several extended family members were killed, and her brother John, her cousin Rachel, and a couple other family members were captured along with her.

Her Aunt Elizabeth was rescued a couple months after the attack. Her cousin Rachel, who had been badly abused by the tribe, was ransomed a couple of years later and died within a year of her return. John adopted the Comanche lifestyle and lived with the tribe for years before eventually leaving the tribe to farm in Mexico. But Cynthia became Comanche and became an integral part of the tribe for over twenty-four years.

She married an influential war chief, Peta Nocona, and had three children with him, including Quanah Parker, who eventually became a powerful Comanche chief. Several times over the years, Indian agents and traders attempted to ransom her, but she refused to go, and the tribe rejected their offers.

In December 1860, Texas Rangers, along with U.S. Cavalry troops, attacked her village and captured her and her baby girl, Prairie Flower (Topsanah), killing everyone else in the camp. (There has been significant historical debate about whether her husband was present at the time. Some accounts claim he died fighting to protect her. Other evidence points to him having been away on a hunting trip at the time of the attack and dying a couple years later from an old battle wound.)

Eventually, one of Cynthia’s relatives claimed her and took her to live with family, but she refused to accept this new life that was being forced upon her. Repeatedly, she tried to escape to the open plains, desperate to find her husband and her sons. One of her uncles eventually agreed to help her look for her people, but they’d have to wait until the Civil War ended.

Prairie Flower died, word came that Cynthia’s son Pecos had passed away, as well, and the Civil War dragged on. Cynthia lost hope of ever being reunited with the two remaining members of her beloved family, Nocona and Quanah.  Overcome by sadness and longing, she sank into a deep depression and died of a broken heart.

Cynthia Ann’s story, the story of a woman torn between cultures, perplexed, intrigued, and haunted me. My heart ached for her loss, and questions flooded my mind. Some stories are like that. They stay with you, and this one was all the more indelible because it was true and filled with unknowns.

As I put pen to paper to begin Texas Forsaken, I sought to create an indelible story of heart-wrenching trials, forgiveness, and second chances. A story of love and hope born anew. A story of redemption.

MY REVIEW

Gripping, realistic and second chances bring this story to life. The author does an excellent job of describing clothes of this era. I could picture the war paint , turquoise necklaces and buckskin clothing worn by the Comanche people in in this story. This was a particularly intriguing story for me as I am part Comanche. I have heard how savage they can be even though it is difficult to read about. I appreciate the way the author writes a story about a very famous person in history. 

Eyes-Like-Sky is excited when her husband comes home  from a battle. Faded in her memory is the person she once was. After being captured she became accustomed to the new way of life and embraced her warrior husband. Their sweet little daughter was precious to both of them. When an attack happens Eyes-Like -Sky finds herself a widow. Once again she is captured but by soldiers. Her hatred toward the man responsible for her Dancing Eagle’s death is very evident. 

Garret has his hands full while keeping a watch over Eyes-Like -Sky. He is still trying  to figure her out but has this sense that there is more to her story. He regrets her husband’s death but now they must move on. Did he do the right thing by keeping her hostage?  Garret is a good man who regrets killing her husband. Now he must do his best to look after her and keep her safe.  

The author captures emotions well as both of our main characters deal with the trials ahead. I wonder how it felt to be taken from your home only to be paraded around while strangers come to see if you could be their missing relative? It may be hard to understand why Eyes-Like-Sky fights to be taken back to the Comanches. The author does a good job of keeping this story close to the true account of the person this book is based on. There are a few differences but it also shows how faith can help when struggling with your future. 

As I read the book a thought came to mind. Why do people want to change others? Eyes-Like-Sky is Comanche and wants to remain that. Her heart desires to go back to her people. However others are trying to make her rejoin family she doesn’t remember. Her happiness seems to upset some when she fights to be herself. In comparison we do that  at times to others. We don’t like the way they dress or their culture and try to change them.  I like this sentence from the story which days, ‘A man should be judged for his own actions.” 

I won’t tell you the rest of the  story because readers need to see how God works in the main characters lives. This has been one of the best fictional accounts of Comanche I have ever read. It will stay with me forever.

Thank you for helping me kick off the book tour for THE SISTERS OF CORINTH. This book is the second in my Emissaries series, but don’t worry—it reads like a stand alone.

The series features Gentiles who became believers in Christ through the ministry of Paul. The first book was about the woman called Lydia who lived in Philippi, and this book is about two step-sisters who lived in Corinth, the “Vegas” of the Roman Empire. What happened in Corinth stayed in Corinth, if you get my meaning, and there was a LOT going on in that pagan city.

I couldn’t help but think of Cinderella’s story as I wrote the opening of this book. The novel begins when the two sisters hear about the new governor coming to Corinth. He has a handsome and eligible son, and Narkis, the head of their family, is determined that one of his daughters should marry him. Prima is like her father, power-hungry and pretentious, while quiet Mariana is a believer in Yeshua. There’s a great deal of primping and preparing, scheming and scowling as the banquet draws near, and you’ll never guess which daughter the young man chooses—or maybe you will.

MY REVIEW 

The author is good when it comes to writing Biblical fiction. Her attention to details allow readers to travel back in time with our characters. We follow two stepsisters  who are quite different. Mariana is a Christian and does not waver from her faith. Prime on the other  hand desires to have riches and is ready to marry. 

Prima is not a pleasant person at all. She judges others and is always looking for ways to embarrass Mariana. Prima’s disrespect for those she thinks are poor or beneath her is so sad. I think her jealousy is what is really going  on. Her father has told her that “life was a competition.” So with that mindset she will do whatever is necessary to marry into wealth. 

I enjoyed the story and saw the difference between the two sisters but there were  a few things I didn’t care for. It is definitely easy to compare this story to Cinderella. That isn’t a bad thing but the continued points about how Prima was so rude, jealous and mean started to be repetitive. I do enjoy this author and see how her characters have flaws. Overall  the book has a great message of faith.
