MY REVIEW

This devotional is a beautiful collection of scriptures, prayers and stories that help us walk in forgiveness. We all have had to face a time when we needed to forgive someone who hurt us. It is not easy to let go of the pain, but until we do we are held captive. God wants us to walk in freedom and this devotional is an illustration of how we can do that.

We are given tools to help us on our journey to forgiveness with pages that encourage us, guide us and lead us in prayer as we go through the book. I loved how it is laid out in a way that is easy to understand and always guides us to His word. This would be a wonderful gift to give to someone. I would grab a copy for yourself and one to bless someone with.

MY REVIEW

THE SEASHELL CAKE BY WANDA E. BRUNSTETTER

I enjoyed following Leora as she begins to settle into her new place. Having an illness that required her to move has helped a lot, yet at times she is lonely. When she was decorating the beautiful seashell cake for a wedding I could picture how beautiful it was. Reading about the strawberry desserts made me hungry and I started craving cookies. I sent my husband to our bakery in town to grab me two keto cookies so I could enjoy them while reading the story.

John is a sweet man who has recently traveled to Florida. He meets Leora at the bakery. I liked how they struck up a friendship and found themselves at the beach at the same time. It was interesting to learn about the different seashells they found and how relaxing it was to sit on the beach together.

I loved how the two began to develop feelings for each other and wondered how they would deal with a long distance relationship. The story encourages us to trust God and learn to let go of our insecurities. I did like the persistence of John and how he sacrificed to be with Leora.

THE BEACH BALL BY JEAN BRUNSTETTER

Violet comes to live with her sister Leora and brother-in-law John. She has a bit more freedom being away from her parents and wants to explore wearing English clothing and maybe drifting a little bit away from her upbringing. I like how Violet thinks through everything but still has a hint of wanting to be a little independent. When she meets a nice young Amish boy, they seem to hit it off. It’s funny how they are both going through a phase of testing out the English world.

Levi and Violet seem to like each other and you can tell Violet is excited to go out with him. He reminds me a little bit like a bad boy trying really hard to impress girls. When he starts drinking beer in front of Violet this should be a red flag for her. Will she be attracted to this guy who lives on the edge at times? Levi doesn’t take it well when Violet doesn’t want to see him anymore.

When Dan comes in the scene Violet is smitten with him. He is charming and they find that they have fun together. When they first met they wear both reaching for a beach ball. How funny that the beach ball is a hit when they go together at the beach. Everything is going well between Violet and Dan until Levi starts to pop up wherever Violet is. Will Levi realize that his actions have pushed Violet away? What happens when Violet tells Dan that she has been hiding a secret about herself?

FRAGMENTS OF A SAND DOLLAR BY RICHELLE BRUNSTETTER

As we come to Francine’s story we see her trying to get over a break up. It has been hard but she knows that she needs to move on with her life. When she is given a month off from her job, maybe she will find peace. Spending time with her sister and brother-in-law in Florida will give her a new direction. So the adventure begins as Francine steps off the bus in Florida.

Lucas is an interesting character who has a job that doesn’t pay well. When he sees Francine at the beach he is immediately intrigued by her. On their first date he seemed to be almost overexcited about being with an Amish girl on a date. His endless questions were a bit annoying but Francine answers with a sweet spirit. Will their relationship work since one is Amish and the other is English?

I loved this quote from the story that says, “Whether we choose to get into situations or they are brought to us, God allows us to go through them for a purpose.” This story is a look at a young woman who is trying to decide if she should join the church and be baptized. I loved watching Francine allow God to direct her and find peace with her choice.

A SARASOTA SUNSET BY LORINE BRUNSTETTER VAN CORBACH

Our last stop is visiting Alana who is going through an emotional time in her life. The decision to visit her sister in Florida will be a welcome change. I loved that Alana surprises Leora on her birthday. Maybe this will help Alana overcome her struggle with fear by a change of scenery.

Alana finds a job and is ready to start her new life in Florida. As she is talking to her boss one day, they discuss praying. Patti says, “ Sometimes when we pray and ask Him for something, we expect an answer quickly or we feel like He didn’t hear our request, especially when when the answer He gave was a no.” We need to remember that God has a plan for us. If we don’t get the answer we wanted from a prayer it may be because He has a different plan.

When Alana meets James during a trip with friends at a beach they start up a conversation. They both go together to look for shark teeth which I thought was interesting. Everything is going well until Alana cuts her foot. Looks like fun is over as she needs to go get stitches on her foot.

I really enjoyed how these two were able to be open with other and share their struggles. Alana is still having problems with fear and James needs to reconnect with his grandfather. It is nice to see how they both rely on their faith and support each other. I couldn’t wait to see if Anna would decide to stay in Florida. This has been a nice story that reminds us to put our trust in God and let go of the past.

I have really enjoyed each story in this collection. Each one has shown us how to forgive, find hope, let go of the past or start a new beginning, I didn’t have a favorite story because each one illustrated God’s unconditional love and plan for our lives. Don’t miss the recipes after each story. They will be fun to make and enjoy.

While coming up with the idea for Kyle and Cassidy’s story, Killer Christmas Evidence, I loved the idea of a serial killer that no one knew about. Someone who killed in different places and in different ways to avoid detection. Kim Rossmo’s theory on Geographic Profiling was intriguing, and I wanted to implement that concept. But, as I started to write, I realized the idea was too big for a Love Inspired Suspense length book, so I had to adjust the story a bit to fit the situation. The basics are there, just not the details I had hoped for.

However, when I sat down to write and I got to know Kyle and Cassidy a little better, I realized the story wasn’t about the stealth serial killer, but about learning to let go of guilt and learning to forgive. How many times in our lives due to being hurt or the pain of loss do we assume we know the truth? Yet, if we listened—really listened—we discover not everything is what is appears to be. And the truth is not painful, but healing.

MY REVIEW

The story sent shivers down my spine as Cassidy unravels the death of her cousin. After Cassidy recovers from a near fatal fire, she finds herself trying to piece together what happened that day. Now she is after a serial killer that has put Cassidy in his sights. It is a race against time as danger starts to overtake her. What happens to her in her apartment is beyond scary. I couldn’t believe what she has endured and I was right there as she struggled to survive.

Kyle has suffered a great loss when Amber died. Now he is surrounded by extended family as Christmas draws near. As he drives home he sees a house on fire. His quick thinking helps save Cassidy. Their past was not a great memory for Kyle. He blames Cassidy for his fiancés death. After all she was the task force commander when things went south.

The story is filled with danger and intrigue as Kyle and Cassidy team up to catch a serial killer on the loose. It is understandable that people are worried about Cassidy mental state. A fire, a drug bust gone bad, death, fires and oh yes a serial killer keeps this story at an intense level of suspense. It is not clear at first if Cassidy and Kyle can work together. As they begin to follow clues you see Kyle starting to give Cassidy a little bit of encouragement. I really liked how the author allows Kyle to work on his anger towards Cassidy. For Kyle it is a need for him to find closure and been to forgive. Have you ever blamed someone for something they didn’t do? Working forgiveness out is hard but oh the freedom it gives is everything.

With drones equipped with weapons and strange vehicles following them they have to dig in deeper to see where this investigation is going. Is there a serial killer out there that has their sights set on Cassidy? What did she witness that has someone ready to harm her? The intense action fills the pages as Kyle slowly starts to believe that Cassidy is in to something that others have missed.

Get ready for an ending that will have you gasping for breath. The story is so so good and I loved the illustration of forgiveness. One of the best suspense books I’ve read lately. It is sure to be a big seller.

Sometimes, the things we say we’ll never do are exactly the things we find ourselves doing.

Back when I was still wearing two braids and walking around barefoot everywhere, I told myself I would never make a speech. Never. But by the time high school graduation came along, despite a thousand firm declarations that I wouldn’t, my mother shook her head. “I think you should do it,” she said—and because mothers are usually right, I did.

Granted, I read the speech off a folded sheet of copy paper because I was too nervous to face the crowd. And my knees were jelly. And I stood off-centered on the stage instead of behind the pulpit like anyone else.

But I did it.

For the rest of my life, I’ll look back and remember what it felt like. Standing on the stage, reading my heart, hearing the sniffles and glancing up to see tears glistening in the eyes of endless people I love.

That was special. Mother was right.

Want to know another thing I said I would never do? Re-write a novel. I’ve heard the stories all my life. The author second guesses their own ability and burns their manuscript. Then, years later, they rewrite the story that echoes through the ages as a classic. Or the novelist loses their entire document to a computer crash, so with a blank page and a blinking cursor, they start anew.

I never thought that was something I could do.

I never wanted to.

If I ever lost a novel or was prompted to start over, I would abandon ship and try for a different vessel. Anyway, that’s what I told myself.

Garden of the Midnights was the story I wrote many years ago when I was younger, when I knew less about manors and England and history. I made mistakes. I broke writing rules. I did too little research and too much overwriting…but it had my soul. Somehow, it was alive. The characters breathed. The tears in their pillow, the aches in their throat, became a part of who I was and what I felt.

This was the one. The story I loved most.

But the edits and the mistakes and the problems overwhelmed me. Like the fearful girl in braids who refused to make a speech, I wanted to throw in the towel and say with even more defiance, “I will never re-write a novel. Never.”

But Mother knew what was needed. She knew the story was too much a part of me to tuck away in some drawer, forgotten and dusty, unread by anyone. So she nodded her head and said, “I think you should do it.”

I didn’t want to.

I was afraid because it wasn’t easy.

But because mothers are usually right, I did. Now, Garden of the Midnights is ready. My heart is still tangled in all the words, all the twists, all the secrets—but this time more, because the book has yet another part of me. The part that was fearful. The part that was too close to quitting. The part that finished anyway.

For the rest of my life, I’ll look back and be thankful. When someone writes me a note that they enjoyed the book, or gets a whimsical tone to their voice when they talk about a scene, or looks up from the pages with tears shimmering in their eyes.

That will be special. Mother was right.

MY REVIEW

I love how the book starts quickly with a mystery that grabbed my attention from the start. A young boy who never knew his father has suddenly finds out that he has been told lies about his past. William finds himself wondering what is going on when accidents start happening to him or around him. Is someone trying to harm him? Do they have a grudge against him? Maybe someone is not happy about his inheritance. The author intrigued me with this story and the time period as well. He travels to London to find answers.

Isabella is a good character. I liked watching her find her way in faith as well as her future. When she and William meet I just knew there would be sparks between them at sometime. I do like how the author allows readers to get to know her better and didn’t rush her into a romance right away. We get to see how different people lived during this time period. It was intriguing to see that the higher class were at times snobs, but our two main characters always showed grace and thrived on treating everyone with respect.

There is mystery surrounding our characters and I had to find out if William gets the answers he searched for all his life. Why did people keep secrets from him about his upbringing? Forgiveness is a big factor in the story, which I thought the author did a great illustration of. Overall the book is really good and offers a good look at a society where some people were taken advantage of.

You’ve most likely seen military working dogs (MWDs) on television shows or in the news. Maybe you’ve seen police dogs in action or read about them. They’re often fierce looking and always well-trained and intelligent. Along with their handler, the MWD is a brave and not so secret weapon in the military and law enforcement world. And did you know that an MWD always outranks his or her handler? It’s true.

I was very aware of all of this, but I had no idea what happened to these dogs when they were too old or perhaps physically unable to continue in their roles. People retire from their careers, so it makes sense that MWDs would as well.

I first learned about retired MWDs from watching my friend Ronie welcome a gorgeous Belgian Malinois, Vvolt, to her family. Anyone who knew the family or came to know Vvolt through social media fell in love with that dog. With his ears cocked just so and his bigger-than-life personality, I knew I had to write about him someday.

When I was given the opportunity to co-write a cozy mystery series with my dear friend, Janice Thompson, I knew one of those books would have to include an MWD. Because MWDs are used in so many situations, from military police work to bomb sniffing to PTSD care and more—I had to narrow down the choice of what my dog would be doing. I won’t give anything away, but I can tell you that Pal, the fictional Belgian Malinois in NEW LEASH ON LIFE is very good at what he does. He also loves a good Whataburger when his regular kibble isn’t available, but I digress.

When I set out to create the personality for Pal, I looked to what I knew and loved about Vvolt. Big personality, toothy grin, and the ability to run and jump like a champ were all included in my dog’s version of the MWD. And like Vvolt, my MWD develops a strong bond with his handler and the family who welcomes him into their home. Pal is loyal, friendly, and apt to stand between his people and danger at the slightest provocation.

Pal’s person in NEW LEASH ON LIFE is Dr. Lane Bishop, a Texas A&M University research veterinarian and Air Force veteran. Lane deals with nightmares that came out of his military experiences. As you can imagine, this causes an issue or two with Nora Hernandez, the woman Lane adores but has not shared his worries with.

Then along comes Pal, a stray (or is he?) with a habit of disappearing and then turning up at the most unlikely places just when he’s needed. I won’t give away the story, but let’s just say that sometimes it takes an animal to show the humans what needs to be done.

MY REVIEW

If you haven’t read the first books in this series, stop everything you are doing and go read them. That way you become friends with the people in this quaint little town. Each character has a reason to be in the story and they enhance each other. I loved getting back to the town and getting caught up with all the people. I adored the setting and how much the community helps each other out.

This book focuses on Nora and Lane. These two have danced around a serious relationship for too long. Now it is time for one of them to step up and get this romance serious and moving forward. The author does give us quite a bit of information about them. I did like their story but some I think could have been left out.

The town is threatened by severe weather that has everyone on pins and needles. If you haven’t been in a tornado before, it not something you ever want to experience. As Lane and Nora figure out where they are going with each others there is also a mystery going on. The dog in the story was a highly trained dog and I really wanted to read more about him.

With everything going on in the book, I think it fell a little short on the cozy mystery feeling. There was too much focus on would Lane and Nora ever get together. It was a fun read but just missed the mark a little for me.
