I wrote “’Tis the Time, ‘Tis the Season” (third book in the “Next Act” series) for women in the second half of their lives – age 50 to 100 – who want characters they can relate to, women who are facing challenges and overcoming them – along with a mix of faith, fun, and later-in-life romance.

When the Lord gave me the idea for the first book in this series, I had no idea it would morph into a trilogy. That’s the way it is with our Lord. He lights our path, we keep walking. Now, He has directed me to write a pilot for a TV series, and that’s what I’m working on right now. I pray one day you will see these characters come to life on your television screen. MY REVIEW

I like that the story centers around older women who I can relate to. It is a continuation of others books in this series so I highly recommend reading them in order. As in the previous books I found it somewhat hard to keep up with the story. There are to many back and forth chapters that made me start to get a little lost at tines. Halfway through the book, I began to appreciate the different characters. Don’t give up on this book because it does have a great message.

Three friends who reunite once again find their lives a mess at times. I did like how they seemed to want to help each other even though they were going through hard situations theirselves. You can tell they were a little on guard of each other and didn’t want to share everything at times. I picked up that trust is a factor in this story.

With everything going on with the different characters there are many emotional moments. Reconciliation, forgiveness, new beginnings and trust are illustrated in this story. The author does a good job of illustrating how emotions stir us to draw closer to God.

You’re an Author from the UK. Tell me more about that.

That’s right. I’m a Brit, which is great but has its challenges, like negotiating single quotation marks! There’s a massive lack of Christian fiction here. It’s not stocked in secular bookstores, there are few Christian bookstores left, and there aren’t many big conventions or publishers. I’m part of a team passionate about changing the landscape. We offer support services to authors and publishing services. Please pray for us and our country, and support British writers if you can.

Who do you share your home with?

My husband, Ben, and four sons ranging from 15 to 7. Plus a dog, 2 cats, 3 goats, 9 chickens and 16 quail (though they don’t all live in the house.) It can get a little crazy…

Sounds like it. How do you find time to write?

Good question. My mornings are usually taken up with feeding/cleaning kids and animals. My afternoons with working for the family business or publishing house. Before tea, I’ll be out picking vegetables and pulling weeds – we try to grow as much as we can ourselves. Writing gets squeezed into late nights, early mornings and quieter days. It’s my downtime and my favorite time spent with Jesus.

You write Bible-based fiction. What specifically?

The Wanderer Series is based on the story of Cain & Abel in Genesis 4. It came about because I woke up one morning wondering what prompted the first murder (no kidding; my brain is weird.) I’d been pondering Jesus’ words about murder and anger in the Sermon on the Mount and praying about what I should write for a while. Suddenly, I knew it had to be a reimagining of Cain’s story – from his perspective.

Hang on. From Cain’s perspective?

Yeah. Though there’s certainly a place for them, I personally dislike stories that are too simplistic. Where bad guys are really bad and good guys are really good – that kind of thing. The Bible teaches us that we all need grace (especially me), and as regards Cain – I don’t think he was much different to any of us. Writing from his perspective gave me opportunity to spend a lot of time in the Word of God, exploring Cain’s slide into sin in a way that challenged me to examine my own heart.

That’s some heavy stuff. Did you have any background that helped you tackle this story?

Sure. I have a degree in Theology, and I’ve also studied English Literature and Creative writing. Mostly though, it was a case of leaning heavily into what God wanted to teach me through this book and hoping some of that resonated with my readers. The reviews so far say it has!

What would you say to those questioning whether Bible-based fiction is right for them?

I totally understand the fear surrounding this genre. I felt it myself when I started writing and that was something I had to take to God and trust Him with. “Is it even ok to write these stories?” I asked.

Essentially though, it isn’t much different to a sermon. It’s exegesis and expansion of the scripture, just presented differently: in fiction rather than non-fiction. I’ve researched, covered my writing in prayer, and had pastors check my work. I’m super careful about handling scripture faithfully but state where the story comes from my imagination. It isn’t intended to replace the Bible. Quite the opposite – I hope it will inspire people to pick the Bible up. I even include an appendix that explains decisions I made, and study questions, at the back.

My hope and prayer is that Jesus will be glorified as lives are touched by this ancient story reimagined. If you’re still not sure, why not give The Wanderer Scorned a go? You don’t know until you try…

MY REVIEW

When I read a Biblical fiction book I make sure I am familiar with the characters the book is relating to. I find this to be helpful in following the author’s fictional account. As the author said some liberties were taken and does explain at the end. With this in mind I began my journey. We start our adventure in the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve have been introduced in the Bible. A banishment has taken place which will affect many.

The story shows the downfall of people when the wrong choices are made. From Cain we witness what happens when his parents disobey God. The author illustrates how poor choices have great consequences even for family members after them. I liked how the author takes on this story with a bit of fiction added in for readers to think what might have happened after this turn of events.

I did like the book and appreciate the author’s notes at the end. I may not look at things the way the author does but I take into consideration that this is a fictional account and creativity was used,

In Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife, the heroine and her father live in a cave which is part of an intricate catacomb hidden inside Montana mountain.

I LOVED researching cave systems, especially those in Montana, and I was amazed at how many extensive tunnels and caverns have been discovered!

One of the most well-known is Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, located between Butte and Bozeman. This spectacular limestone cave system features a series of caverns adorned with incredible rock formations. These days, visitors can take guided tours to marvel at the intricate stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helictites that have formed over thousands of years. The cave is also home to several species of bats.

Another notable cave system is the Bighorn Caverns, situated in the Pryor Mountains south of Billings. This complex network of caves extends for over 14 miles, making it one of the most significant cave systems in the state. Experienced cavers can explore winding passages, underground streams, and vast chambers with unique mineral formations.

The Bighorn Caverns are very similar to how I imagine the cave system was that Jess lived in. As amazing as the tunnels are to explore, I’m not sure I’d want to live in such darkness. What about you?

MY REVIEW

If you haven’t had the opportunity to read a book from this author, you are missing out. She has this gift of making readers feel like they have been transported to the setting of the book with skilled precision. It is easy to close your eyes and see the action play out with descriptive words that dance across the pages. I loved this story and could sense that faith would play a big role in the book.

Jess is a young woman who is trying to make a better life for herself and get away from the man her father wants her to marry. Her cry to God is powerful as she says, “ I need help. I need a way out of this darkness. Show me how I can get away for good.” With those words she gives her trust to Him. She is treated like a prisoner by her father who watches her every move. Jess needs to get away and find freedom. If she stays under her father’s power her life will be filled with sadness. Will she find someone to help her?

Gil is out to find his missing brother and uncover who is behind the theft behind his family’s sapphires. I have to say that sapphire is a favorite of mine. Its beauty is stunning and I was happy to learn more about how it is mined. When Gil and Jess encounter each other was it an answer to prayers? What Jess proposes to Gil is surprising but she is so set in getting away from her controlling father that she will do anything.

I loved how Gil was willing to help Jess out but danger soon follows. Deceit, power and greed make this story so intriguing. Finding out that Jess’s dad is behind a robbery of sorts makes Jess very uneasy. Will they be able to see justice served? I couldn’t wait to see how this story ended. Another great story that illustrates how God is in control.

Chase Your Dreams West: A Ginnie West Adventure took me too long to finish. I was working on it when one of my sons was killed in a car accident. I paused writing for a few years as our family adjusted to losing Ryan.

An author friend invited me to a writer’s retreat a few years ago, knowing I was stuck and that week unlocked a lot of things for me. Including deciding to change where I placed what is now the first four chapters. I wrote them two books ago thinking they would make a great denouement, but after my son’s death, I realized they would make a better beginning.

This book is a little different from the first four as Ginnie explores horsemanship training with her mare, Calliope–with her dad’s blessing, and perhaps is given a little help from her mom. Ginnie is given back one of her mom’s journals and gets to know the mom she doesn’t really remember and her dad didn’t really talk about… until recently.

MY REVIEW

I have enjoyed this series and think it is perfect for middle school age children and up. The characters are fun and easy to relate to as it shows the struggles that some children may go through. There are some sensitive topics in the book so be cautious when reading. The author does handle these in a graceful way.

If you have not read the other books in this series I would recommend going back and reading them so you can follow the series. Strained relationships are tackled in this thought provoking story which helps young readers see that they are not alone in this. I liked the family dynamics and how Grace was given to see reconciliation happen.

Another great point in the story dealing with the loss of a parent. This part was especially touching and very helpful. It shares how it is okay to grieve and to remember those you have lost. I also liked how the author talks about never giving up on a dream.

Hello Celebrate Lit Friends and Readers! I’m back to share a looksie at Book 2 from Kentucky Debutantes of the Gilded Age. I’ve really enjoyed my deep dive into all things Kentucky Derby and the world of horseracing in To Choose the Longshot.

Most of us have heard of Churchill Downs and Lexington’s Keeneland. But before Keeneland was the Lexington Association Racetrack. The annual spring race generally opened each year on that course with a featured race known as the Phoenix Stakes. It dates as far back in history as 1831! You can take a peek at the fascinating horse names of all the winners from 1831 to 2012, here. Of course, I’ve fictionalized names of winners and many events around the races in my series, but it’s fun to peek at real-life history when crafting our stories.

Leading up to and through the Gilded Age, the time period and setting of this series, the Phoenix race was generally sponsored by the Phoenix Hotel in Lexington. And more than Kentucky horseracing history, in Book 2, readers will get to come along for a glimpse at another course located in Baltimore, Maryland when the story takes our main characters to Pimlico. They referred to this track as the Old Hilltop in the early days of American horseracing history.

And atop Pimlico sits the famed weathervane. Did you know that painting the Preakness Stakes weathervane is a grand Pimlico tradition dating to 1909? The vane style is unique, commissioned by the Maryland Jockey Club, bearing the shape of a thoroughbred and jockey ever since the original arrow-shaped one was struck down by lightning. The new vane was christened by the colors of the silks carried by that year’s winner, Effendi.

I had a great deal of fun writing To Choose the Longshot starting with the very first page. The novel opens with a runaway bride! It’s always a wonder what makes a bride runaway, and my imagination went to work at once creating the situation that causes this bride so much consternation.

Readers get to learn more about Veronica’s sister in Book 2, Miss Delaney Lyndon. Everyone calls the shy and demure middle sister, Delia. And all of Lexington expects one of the Lyndon sisters to marry into the Sullivan family, since these two families are “Kentucky horseracing royalty.” But who will Delia choose to marry? But if anyone can help steer Delia to a decision, it’s Aunt Mae. As our heroine grapples with perceptions and tries to balance expectations with what’s in her heart, find out what happens next with a deeper look at the world of horseracing, sure to give horse enthusiasts plenty to cheer about.

MY REVIEW

Delia is a charming young woman who stands at the altar ready to say I do. The look in her eyes should tell people what is about to happen. As she turns and faces the exit doors, it happens. She runs out the doors leaving her fiancée at the altar. Ok I had to laugh because that moment was not expected. After all Delia has been groomed for this moment. I kept thinking, “the heart wants what the heart wants.”

Thaddeus is left at the altar but never gives up on Delia. Her parents continue to push her to reconcile with Thaddeus because they want her to be secure financially. I did like how Thaddeus forgave Delia for running away but I wonder how long he will wait for her?

Jake comes on the scene and captures Delia’s attention right away. He is aware of her interest but he has others things on his mind as well. He knows horses well and has a plan to open a country inn . The idea is a good one that will attract city people. It was easy to like him because he is kind, humble and takes to children well. That’s a plus in Delia’s eyes.

With Delia having two suitors that want to marry her the story takes on a more serious tone. Bitterness and jealousy gets the best of one man who has allowed his emotions to cause harm to others. This was a shock to many and shows how a hardened heart can destroy someone. With the backdrop of the Kentucky Derby the story delivers a good look at horse racing. The crowd is excited about the upcoming events but Jake wonders if he will be able to have his horse compete. Who would cause danger to him and try to take his horse out of the race?

Faith is very prevalent in the story and Delia finds herself seeking God’s wisdom in her future. As she visits her aunt she realizes that the man she marries must be committed to following God. This time away from home has helped Delia clear her head and start to see who God has planned for her to marry.

The ending is beautifully written and gives readers a lesson on forgiveness. I loved how Jake stood up for the truth and allowed God to show grace to someone who was bitter and wanted to cause harm to others.
