Author: Lauralee Bliss

Genre: Historical Christian Fiction

Release date: January, 2025

The Day Hope Seemed Swept Away

Enjoy a series of 6 exciting novels featuring historic disasters that transformed landscapes and multiple lives. Whether by nature or by man, these disasters changed history and were a day to be remembered.

Lillian Hartwick has been in the small railroad town of Wellington, Washington, caring for her cousin and assisting the postmaster when February snows bring all train traffic to a halt. Slow-witted but kind Griffin Jones, who works odd jobs for the railway while enduring taunts from other workers, has tried his best to gain Lillian’s interest, but she is engaged and waiting her fiancé’s arrival from California. Predawn thunderstorms on Tuesday, March 1, 1910, trigger a devasting avalanche, sweeping two trains down Stevens Pass. Lillian and Griffin work together to help survivors, including Griffin’s tormentors. In the midst of the catastrophe their feelings for each other grow. But is it enough when Lillian’s fiancé finally arrives in the spring, ready to claim her as his own?

Pure Joy

Lauralee Bliss, Author of “When the Avalanche Roared”

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds…  James 1:2 NIV

How does one equate a scripture like this with the death and destruction inherent in natural disasters? It seems an oxymoron to expect joy when faced with twisted metal and broken lives, such as in the deadliest avalanche in American history depicted in When the Avalanche Roared. Even now I think of the natural disaster of the hurricane that just recently destroyed mountain communities in western North Carolina, with homes and lives swept away in an avalanche of water and mud. So it was back in March, 1910 when a mile wide bank of snow detached from Windy Top in the northern Cascades of Washington State, slamming into three parked trains near Wellington, sending cars and sleeping passengers tumbling into the ravine. Over ninety lives were lost.

This could be considered a trial of supreme magnitude. Yet scripture commands we consider joy in the midst of it. The word joy evokes smiles and laughter, peace and satisfaction. It brings to mind Jesus resting in the boat in the midst of a raging storm, tossed about on high waves while the disciples huddle together in abject fear. After He calms the seas He asks them, “Where is your faith?” It demands the human mind look away from apparent destruction to something higher. To look beyond what one sees to the unseen. To trust God even when nothing appears trustworthy.

When the Avalanche Roared delves into the flames that spark, not from smoldering locomotives in a ravine, but within a small rail town that banded together in the wee hours of a frigid morning to rescue others. The destruction is evident. But the grit and determination of those who dug out people from heavy snow solidified by rain and cared for the suffering while their town remained isolated from the world speaks of a picture far greater than the picture of destruction. So it is today with communities swallowed by mud and trees and splintered fragments of homes as reminders of a destructive hurricane. Beyond the visual are the outpouring of help and compassion and holding the hands of those weakened by disaster in gestures of hope and resolve. And in this, a new birth of joy is realized.

God created us to find joy in struggle, to develop perseverance to achieve a goal despite what is thrown our way, to realize that when we do, we truly lack nothing. And therein we find lasting peace even in the midst of catastrophe.

Strangers unite to help the hurting.

A friend flew from Florida to North Carolina and arranged with this store owner for a free truckload of water for communities devastated by the hurricane.

MY REVIEW

I love how the author builds the story slowly as she introduces the characters. It allows readers to get to know each character  and follow their transformation. This story centers around a tragic event that affected many lives.

Lillian comes to the small town of  Wellington, Washington to help her cousin and also assist  the postmaster. She seems to really like her job and gets to know people as they come by for a package or letter. The year is 1910 when railroads became a much needed way to travel. Lillian is also excited to see her fiancé soon as she anticipates setting a wedding  date.

Griffin who happens to be  my character is a man who is not able to  read.p which at times makes it difficult for him at things others take for granted.  He is so kind and easy to like. When he befriends Lillian a great friendship is developed. Griffin is grounded in his faith and helps Lillian as she struggles to find her worth.

The story is definitely emotional as a disaster happens. What I like is seeing how people came together during the tragedy. As Lillian and Griffin grow their relationship they begin to see where God wants to use them. I loved the faith element in the  story  and historical facts that bring readers to understand how a tragedy can bring beauty from ashes.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

MY REVIEW

The story is full of adventure when a group of teens take a secret hike late at night.  The description of the snow cascading down the  mountain was so realistic I could feel chills running through my body.  I can’t imagine the terror the teens felt as they saw the destruction coming their way.

I enjoyed reading how they looked for each other after the avalanche had stopped. You could feel the confusion as each one hoped for rescue. The details about climbing was interesting . I didn’t realize all the equipment you need to pack and survival tools that are necessary. It is hard to say which character I liked the most because they each brought a purpose to the story. It is a clean book with light faith elements scattered in the story. It is a perfect read for teens where they will find lessons about encouraging each other, trusting God and never giving up.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

Liz is an author, the wife of a professional tree climber and the mom of three energetic and laundry-producing children. She received her Associate’s of Arts at the University of Sioux Falls, where she received the LAR Writing Award for her essay entitled, “My Real Life Mufasa.” Liz once spent a summer in Colorado teaching rock climbing, which she believes was a fantastic way to make money and memories. She resides with her family in Wisconsin, where they enjoy hiking and rock climbing. Liz and her husband have also backpacked in Colorado and the Grand Canyon, which have provided inspiration for her writing. She likes making adventurous stories to encourage others to find adventures and expand their comfort zones (though admittedly, she still needs lots of practice expanding her own comfort zone). She has thoroughly enjoyed working on her first novel, Avalanche, and the sequel Chased, which will release in the summer of 2020.

More from Liz

Have you ever been tempted to take a risk even though your conscience was screaming at you? Were you able to justify the pursuit of the thrill, actually convincing yourself that what you knew to be the unwise decision made perfect sense?
I did. So did my sisters. And so did Sawyer and Marshall Miles. When Sawyer first proposed the idea of the moonlit summit on our families’ annual backpacking trip, I was terrified. But I was also hooked. Sawyer convinced us that we would be fine, and we would be back to camp before our parents woke up with the sunrise.
Hearts racing and hands trembling, we five kids snuck away from camp in the middle of the night. Hiking toward the peak, the full moon was breathtaking, the wildlife abundant, and the experience unreal.
It became a whole lot more unreal when an avalanche, roaring, white and enormous, thundered into our path. Buried in the packed snow, I would have given anything to go back in time and change my decision to go along with this foolish idea.
Digging out of the cemented snow was the first of many challenges in the coming days. Physically, emotionally and spiritually, we were all pushed to our limits.
I had always loved hiking Colorado’s peaks. But, of course, I had never had to evacuate my own sister. I had always trusted Dad’s orienteering. Now I had to trust Sawyer, who, by the way, was the brain behind this dilemma. I usually slept best while backpacking. But, mountain nights are warmer when spent in a sleeping bag. But I can’t let my mind go there. I must keep a positive outlook and trust God to bring us to safety. That’s easier said than done.
Avalanche is a Christian teen and young adult novel. This engaging journey, told by fifteen-year-old Marlee Stanley, captures a timeless sense of adventure. The five young adults strive to exhibit godly character throughout their escapade, but they have not been in such a dire situation before. It will take immense strength and cooperation to hike out of this mess.

Trains. I love trains. I got this love from my father, who is fascinated by all types of trains. When writing Light to My Path, I asked my dad lots of questions, and I relied heavily upon the things I learned at the train museums he took me to see.

One of our favorite train museums is in Duluth, MN. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum, in what was the former depot of the Gilded Age boomtown, is home to one of the most beautiful trains I have ever seen.

It’s name is the William B. Crooks, and it is a steam locomotive.

The William Crooks, the first train engine of any kind in Minnesota belonging to the St. Paul & Pacific Railroad by railroad tycoon James J. Hill of St. Paul. The William Crooks pulled its first train cars full of passengers on June 28, 1862. The William Crooks retired from passenger service in 1897.

Isn’t it beautiful? When the train retired from passenger service, it became the personal train of James J. Hill, The Empire Builder and owner of The Great Northern Railroad.

James J. Hill dreamed of pushing a railroad from Minnesota to the West Coast, through the Rocky and Cascade Mountains. It was along the Great Northern Railroad in March of 1910 that one of the worst train disasters in US history occurred. An avalanche took out two trains, killing 96 people.

This historic event inspired part of the story in Light to My Path. A train, trapped by snow, unable to go forward or back, and with an avalanche imminent. It’s the kind of book that calls for a warm blanket and a hot cup of tea!

MY REVIEW

A young woman  who grew up in the orphanage is the center of this story. Eldora has endured the pain of not being wanted but has such a big heart.  She soon finds herself in charge of three young orphans destined for an adventure. I really liked how Eldora took her responsibilities well. I couldn’t wait to see what God has planned for her.

Sam was so close to marrying when he overhears his fiancé saying unkind words about him behind his back. When he confronts her she tries to convince him she didn’t mean it. I laughed at his departing words to her. You must  read the book to find out what he said. Now he finds himself on a train helping Eldora and her charges reach their destination safely.

The shenanigans of the children on the train are so funny that I had to stop reading at times. Underneath their many moments of chaos lies three young children who want to be adopted so bad. They desire to be part of a family and feel secure. I think Sam was having second thoughts at times when the children  constantly are in trouble.

Set  against a backdrop of countryside the story focuses on relationships, trust, faith and hope for our characters. I love how the author brings emotions to her stories as we witness their many challenges. The ending is just what I  hoped for and delivers a sense of new beginnings.

Chased

About the Book

Book:  Chased

Author: M. Liz Boyle

Genre: Christian Y.A.

Release date: June 1, 2020

Ebook Chased Cover JPGIt’s been a year since Marlee, her sisters, and the Miles boys survived an avalanche. Sure, it was a little embarrassing for them when all the neighbors saw them on the news, but they love being outdoors, and what are the odds that another tragedy would strike this adventurous group? Has anyone calculated the statistics of being hit with two natural disasters? It has to be low, so of course the two families planned to backpack again this summer.

When the teens first meet Thad, a dehydrated hiker on the trail, they give him water and food and help him recover. He seems harmless until he tells them to hike a few extra miles at sunset. Then Lydie finds a hand-drawn map that Thad dropped, and they discover why he is so eager to get away from the Stanley girls and Miles boys. So eager that he starts chasing them.

Now they have to climb up unforgiving ridges, sneak through the night, and – is that thunder and lightning? To make matters worse, Marlee has a nagging worry that her older sister Ellie is preparing to move away from home.

What is God’s plan? How will they get away from Thad before it’s too late?

More from Liz

Five years ago my husband Dustin and I took a dream-come-true trip to the Grand Canyon. On the first day we hiked to the bottom of the Cathedral Staircase. To picture the Cathedral Staircase, think of the longest set of stone stairs in the world, double it, and put it in a (scenic) pizza oven. Oh, and strap a 50-pound bag to your back. It was there in the sun that we met a young couple who was sorely unprepared for the elements of the Canyon. The young lady had signs of heat exhaustion, and the guy didn’t have a clue what to do. Thankfully our group was able to help them and call backcountry rangers to get the couple to safety. The situation was eye-opening on many levels. After the shock of witnessing such a close call settled down, my creative side saw the experience as inspiration for Avalanche’s sequel. Except in my book Chased, I added a plot twist. When the dehydrated hiker recovers, he becomes a threat to the very people who saved his life. I had a blast writing Chased, and I hope you enjoy the adventure, too!

MY REVIEW

I think I like this book better than the first one. The characters are more defined and I feel more invested in them. Even though you could probably read this book without reading the first I highly recommend reading the first one. It introduces the group of hikers and their relationship to each other.

In this story we find  our five hikers in the Montana mountains. When I was younger I remember a road trip my family took through Montana. It was a majestic view but I was terrified at how high we were in our little station wagon. The road was very narrow and I thought we would fall off anytime. The author describes the mountains so vividly that I can still see the landscape from many years ago.

Without going into much detail I loved the plot of being hunted by a young man who would do anything to protect the treasure he was looking for in the rugged terrain. The hikers do run into him and help him out when he becomes dehydrated. That fateful encounter will prove to be a cat and mouse game as danger follows them on their hike. Thad was a strange character that had only one thing on his mind. He did kinda give me the creeps and I kept screaming at  the teens to run as fast as they could.

We get to hear secrets shared between friends and siblings that I thought showed the maturity of all of them. There is a strong faith element in the story and it was refreshing to see them praying and trusting God to keep them safe. I am looking forward to reading  the next book in this series and know that it will be an adventure faith filled story just like these last two have been.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
