It is early summer in the beachside town of The Valley.

Lexi Slaydon flips her long auburn hair in an attempted display of confidence before she steps into her local church for the weekly Friday night social.

No matter how many times she attended youth nights, the butterflies always took flight within her stomach in the hours leading up to youth night.

So, when a normal day at work sees a handsome stranger move into Lexi’s path and an opportunity at church presents itself that could set her up to finally conquer her fears, Lexi feels a spark; a spark of that thing she sees so often in her best friend Hope: Confidence!

Just as Lexi begins to get a grasp of how her new reality feels, another new reality hits. She discovers too late that she is a naïve pawn in a game of conquests her new beau is playing. Rocked to the core, Lexi tries to break it off, only to find his determination intensify. A night that should have been a night to remember for one of her best friends, quickly becomes a night to remember for Lexi as she and her beau face off with potentially devastation results.

About the Author

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…

In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing. It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

More from Karen

Hello! Im Karen, or Kazzy Wazzy to my husband. 😃

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve been writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush… *grin*

In high-school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my Sister…remember that story sis? *smile*

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing by day, and a professional Ballroom Dance teacher of an evening.

It wasn’t until God intervened, moved me out of the city at into a small country town to be a farmers wife, that He resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

Centred around five youth group leaders, the stories look at very real circumstances young people face without sugar coating consequences of individual actions. However, where is God when problems arise?

Well, He’s always closer than you think, and He’s always working for your good.

It is my prayer you enjoy the journey these stories take you on and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

MY REVIEW

Lexi caught my attention because I liked how she took the invitation to be on the Leadership Team seriously. She didn’t jump at the  chance because of the title , but wanted to make sure this was where she was called to. Lexi is being called out of her comfort zone when she has to lead a group on game night. Talk about being thrown into the lion’s  den. I liked following Lexi as she tries to figure out where God is calling her. There is a distraction that slows Lexi down and I wasn’t sure I liked where the story was going. Why did this guy named Brad want to be around Lexi so much? Her brother has warned her to stay away from him, but she is drawn to him for some reason. Could it be God testing her? Or is it the enemy trying to take her away from being a leader?

I think I need to mention something about the storyline. As Lexi and her friends meet up they  seem to always end up at a bar. I’m not sure that this is a good example as a Youth Leader. Am I being too judgmental or is this not a place where you would want young people you are leading to see you at? There is a lot of storyline with Lexi and Brad  which made wonder if the author is illustrating how we can fall away from God’s direction when we are tempted. Lexi has doubts about being with Brad but she seems to ignore them so I was intrigued where the  author would take this relationship.

The author handles a difficult part in the book as Brad starts to show his true colors. He is demanding, possessive and rude whenever he thinks Lexi is not respecting him. There is evidence that he is aggressive and can be downright rude at times to her. I didn’t like that he was trying to pressure her to step away from Leadership and wanted to control her.

The story does deal with an abusive relationship that could be a trigger for some. The author does a very good job of showing how Lexi finds herself in a situation where she couldn’t escape the danger that came at her. From this traumatic event it shows how God turns what the enemy meant for bad into good. The story reminds us to trust God and listen to Him at all times. I have to say I loved the games the author included for the youth and would recommend youth leaders to use them in their own lessons. Be sure to look at the questions at the end that will help readers look at the story and see what lessons can be learned  from it.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
