The first book in this exciting series has started off with a powerful story line. Pharmaceutical companies try to introduce new medicines everyday. What happens when one company pushes for a new drug that they secretly know is harmful? I have to compare this writing style to the caliber of Robin Cook meets John Grisham in a gritty drama that exceeds with high octane action. The author in my opinion has surpassed the above mentioned authors with tough as nails characters and a plot that takes you inside boardrooms to pharmacy labs where secrets are exposed.

I loved Kate instantly. She is a strong woman with exceptional ethics. When she takes lead on a case involving one of the most powerful pharmaceutical companies , her life is suddenly in danger. The tension mounts as a whistle blower comes forward. Will Kate be able to keep the person alive long enough to testify? The relationship between Kate and Landon was nice and I loved how faith became a factor as they grew closer to each other.

I loved the fast pace of the story and the details of how lawyers investigate to get their facts in order. It was interesting to see how greed can take over someone and turn them into nothing more than a heartless person. It boggles my mind that a company knowingly will put a dangerous medication on the market for money. Who decides to go a step further in order to win the lawsuit? Are they willing to kill to get what they want?

Landon joins Kate in the investigation and proves to be a valuable asset to her. He is powerful and determined to keep Kate safe. Will he be able to keep her away from danger? The intrigue was incredible and I loved the cat and mouse game the pharmaceutical company played with Kate’s law firm. Their oh so innocent need for time to prepare for trial was devious.

This is one book you must read if you love thrillers with greed, secrets, danger , lies , and learning to trust. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book in this well written series.

I remember reading this book when I was younger and watching the series when it was on television. As I read it this time, I found myself more involved with the story. I can’t imagine at nineteen to travel so far away from home. I thought Christy was a wonderful character and so brave. The shock she felt as she stepped off the train showed on her face. From a wonderful, comfortable life to poverty would scare off many. Christy was determined to make a go at bring the best teacher the children ever had.

The little place she traveled by foot was too much for me at times. I cried when I read about the children with no shoes, and little food to eat. The author describes a shanty town with no hope of improvement. I loved the story because it really shows how hard times were during that time period, and how the families did what they could to survive. What if you lost everything and had to live in a little place with no electricity or food? Christy was in for some hard times and I loved how she found ways to get donations for the school and children.

David is such a great character. As a preacher in this little backwoods area, he has his hands full with unruly men and secret stills that cause much danger to the people. I loved his sermon he gave after the still had been found out. It is so true that people who are doing bad things love the darkness. That way they think they are hidden and no one knows. But like Preacher David described in his sermon, God sees everything. You can’t hide from Him. Preacher David is so encouraging and a caring man. His devotion to the community is admirable.

The story is filled with how Christy adapts to her new life and the children that she teaches. Her compassion for the children is very heartwarming. I loved the interaction she had with several of the children. Some who needed to know they were important , while others needed guidance. It seems like there is always that one kid in class that is hard to reach. He wants to be tough and show off for the class. I was so intrigued with how Christy handled the boy who tried to intimidate her. If you haven’t had a chance to read this inspiring story, I encourage you to grab a copy. Travel back to the early 1900s and experience a woman with courage, love for children, steadfast faith and hope for a better life for her community.

My family and I spent a lot of time in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.
When I came up with the idea for the Pinkerton series, I knew the books had to
be set in a place that I loved. The Heart of An Agent, book 2 in The Adirondack
Pinkertons series takes place at an Adirondack great camp. Imagine a time when
people would travel from faraway places to hike the many trails or lounge
on a porch in one of the famed Adirondack chairs. These intricate, grand structures
, built during the latter part of the nineteenth century are part of the unique
landscape and history that makes up the Adirondack Mountains o
f upstate New York. I enjoyed creating the fictional Murphy camp,
the setting for Lily Handland and Owen Murphy’s story.

The story is surrounded with historical facts that make it become a visual literary gem.

I loved learning about the camps that housed people and was a welcome treat for guests

. I could see the beautiful landscape that surrounded the camp and the welcoming

smells of fresh bread cooling on the table.

Lily is a wonderful character with a strong sense of what she wants. She can be stubborn

at times but her courage is evident in everything she does. She is ready to retire as a

Pinkerton agent. I think she finally felt free to live her life. I loved how she took

on a challenge that seemed impossible. She decides to invest in the

Murphy Great Camp. To say that it needed some work was an understatement.

It sure needed some TLC and Lily is ready to dive in with so many ideas.

Owen has been grieving the death of his wife and forgotten about the camp.

It hardly has visitors and it screams for help with its dull curtains and

neglected grounds. I really enjoyed the banter between Owen and Lily

as they come to an agreement . Now that they are business partners,

can the camp be restored and bring a profit? Owen has his hands full

with Lily and her neverending ideas. I loved how their relationship

grew slowly. Can Owen open his heart again and allow himself to

love another woman?

What I most loved about the story was the secret that Lily has kept from Owen.

She hasn’t told him about her past and has been warned that secrets

can hurt and destroy trust. I was on edge reading the story just

waiting for Lily’s secret to be found out. Every page I turned I

felt her secret start to put distance between her and Owen. The tension was high

and I thought the author did an amazing job of keeping readers on their toes,

waiting for Owen to find out the truth.

The book is a wonderful trip back in time where you could visit the

local mercantile and find just about anything you needed. The town was small

and quaint and filled with people who helped each other out. I loved how

the author demonstrates with beautiful writing how secrets get found

out and the hurt and pain they cause. Will Owen be able to forgive Lily?

Can he let go of his past and forgive himself for an accident he feels guilty of?

Don’t miss this wonderful story of two people looking to belong and

wanting to find happiness.

A PLACE AT OUR TABLE by

This book is on my list for top picks for 2017. The emotions in the story were so real, I cried along with the characters. Two families each dealing with a tragedy come together with food and compassion to heal. I would love to sit at the table with these families and listen as they share their pain and encouragement.

Kayla was such a sweet character and I love how she tried to look after her younger brother. When you lose someone due to their job , it’s hard to watch another of your family members want to follow in their footsteps. Her family has gone through a devastating loss and are trying to move on. I really liked Nathan and wanted to give him a hug. He seemed so mature for his age and handled his grief very well. What I liked best about him was his eagerness to be a volunteer firefighter like his older brother. This did cause Kayla distress and made Nathan a bit upset. Her fear was real to her and something she will have to deal with. Have you ever been afraid something bad was going to happen and let fear take over?

Jamie is a hard worker and seems to keep himself going in circles with all his responsibilities. Can you remember a time you said “ I’ll fix that soon, or I’ll get to it as soon as I can?” Those words will become the focal point for Jamie when something happens that I didn’t see coming. I wept as I read what the family was going through and felt so sorry for Jamie. He carries guilt over the accident and that fuels him to take on more work. Being a volunteer firefighter gives him an outlet to try and save everyone. Will he be able to forgive himself for something he thinks is his fault?

When the two families meet, I loved how they touched each other’s lives by offering compassion and support. The author does a great job of allowing each character to heal in their own way. I loved how the characters learned to trust again and slowly bring two families together. The book is so touching that I didn’t want it to end. I felt like I was sitting at the table with each family watching them interact with each other. Very few authors can write a story that can make you feel like you are there with the characters. This author has done an amazing job of allowing readers to feel like part of the story. As I read the book, I forgot everything around me. I loved reading how Kayla and Jamie became friends and slowly allowed God to bring them closer together. The title of the book is powerful to me, because it represents to me that there is always a place at the table to find forgiveness, healing and love.

I purchased a copy of this book and the review is my own opinion.

The first chapter starts out with an amusing tale of a modern-day couple in the front seat of a car, on Christmas Eve, traveling to see relatives for the holiday. They’re griping about the hassles of the season, and hollering at the the kids, who are playing with the foil on Mom’s Jell-O salad in the backseat. Then we break from that to a scene of Mary and Joseph entering Bethlehem, about to bring God’s Son into the world. It contrasts the modern-day wife, not wanting to go into a sleazy diner because it’s the only place open on Christmas Eve, with Mary hesitating to go into a smelly barnyard to give birth. When the modern-day couple decide to tell their children the Christmas story—complete with snow and a little drummer boy—the contrasts become both highly funny and very poignant.

I wrote one of the chapters in the book. It’s about the first Christmas, from the perspective of Joseph. What he must have thought and felt when Mary was giving birth to Jesus, knowing that he had been personally given the divine responsibility to teach God’s Son about God. Based on the Old Testament teachings he’d been raised with, what did Joseph think Jesus would be like when He was born, and how did reality clash with those expectations?

This book makes a great gift for family and friends, with its beautiful debossed hardback cover, full-color interior, and a ribbon page marker. With stories about the Nativity as well as tales of modern-day people celebrating that event, almost anyone would enjoy receiving a copy and reading it—even those who don’t believe in Christ as their Savior. It’s small enough to be a stocking stuffer (or tucked into the pocket of a Christmas-themed pot holder!) and inexpensive enough to be a practical gift for those people you’re not sure will reciprocate, or who may feel uncomfortable if they didn’t get you anything.

This devotional would also be ideal to incorporate into an individual’s or a family’s advent celebration, reading one chapter a day during the three weeks leading up to Christmas.

The book is a collection of short stories with a biblical reference tucked inside. I loved each story and found them encouraging. I love at the end of each story is a life application and scripture to reinforce the story. This brings the story to a beautiful remembrance of His Word. We are reminded about His grace and His provision.

Each story is filled with emotion and reminds us that “God is there for you, ready to provide whatever you need. So seek Him today.” I loved reading that, because as the holidays approach, it becomes hard for me to find joy. So many bad memories of growing up and other tragic events have robbed me of my joy. I struggle to get through the holidays each year. I cry for the little girl who never received gifts and was told that I was not wanted. As I read through the book today, I was overwhelmed with the truth. He is there for me and I have forgotten to cry out to Him.

I loved each story and how they remind us to remember what the true meaning of Christmas is about. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, we forget about a sweet baby born long ago that grew up to save us . I cry every time I think about the story of His birth. How precious it is to know that no matter what we have done, He loves us unconditionally. Thank you for a book that lifted my spirits and reminded me that I am not alone.
