MY REVIEW

With a well known theme from a television show, I joined Captain Lex, Courtney, Annie and Rafe on a three hour tour around the islands. Lex was already having misgivings about the trip when out in the middle of the water, disaster strikes. I loved how quickly the author brought excitement to the story with a dangerous storm approaching the group who seems to be drifting out to sea. It oddly sounds familiar to me, but I was intrigued to see where the author would take our group as they face danger.

I am thrilled to be here for the unveiling of Courtney. She has been in the series but often in the background. She isn’t much of a people person and her insecurity holds her back. After what she went through at her job I can understand how hard it is for her to trust anyone. I know how she feels thinking that everyone is looking at you, judging you and making you feel worthless. It is a struggle to overcome this but this story illustrates who we need to turn to when we are at out lowest.

Lex knows what it is like to think you have a great relationship and then suddenly one day a note destroys your dreams. It broke my heart to see how hurt Lex was. He seems to try to steer away from everyone but being on the boat with three other people may help him realize he is not alone in the world. As Courtney and Lex try to survive the situation they are in, I just knew that something good was going to happen for them.

I like how the author is able to talk about the storms we each face. With the group stuck out in the water they had to endure a storm that took them off course. We each have been through storms that take us away from our comfort zone. One of the things the story touches on is how we can fall into the trap of isolating ourselves. We become so scared to trust because we have been hurt that we don’t want to let anyone in. Trusting others is difficult but we need to let go of our doubts and allow others to help us. On the boat the group start to work together to find a way to be rescued. We can be rescued from our storm by calling out to Jesus.

One of the best parts of this book is when Courtney opens up to Lex about her past. As she tells him about her depression and how the church she use to go to treated her, I cried. Yes I too have been judged by people in church because I have depression and anxiety. Many people don’t understand it and want to blame you for not getting better. It was sad to read that the church Courtney went to was judgmental because she wanted to get therapy. This pushed her away from everyone. I appreciate how the author approaches depression in a sensitive way.

I have loved this story starting with the storm that stranded people and how they each found how strong they are. They worked together and allowed each other to share their struggles. We see how Courtney deals with social anxiety. It has affected her for years and slowly with help from her friends and faith she starts to see that there is hope. The relationship between Lex and Courtney was nice and grounded in faith. They didn’t allow the stigma of an age difference to stop them from finding happiness with each other. When each character let go of doubt, fear and trust issues, they found peace and a God who is always there.

MY REVIEW

I reviewed this book in November 2021 and loved it. Now I get to fall in love with it all over again as Christa narrates it. I love listening to how her voice transition from one character to another. She brings them to life and enhances the story to a level of excitement.

Each book in this series is based on a fairytale. I have these stories to be exciting, creative and intriguing. I couldn’t wait to go back to the 1920s and see how the author incorporates a fairytale into a story filled with the mob, illegal alcohol, dolls and a mystery that is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Clarice has a very unusual job of painting faces on nutcrackers. What a unique trade to have and it seems that her boss is impressed with her work. I began to wonder why she was suddenly working on a special project. Having the job of painting fifteen thousand dolls by hand was crazy. How is she suppose to do that all by herself? Sonething is strange here and the author had me hooked on the story.

When a murder occurs Clarice is helped by Milo to get away from the danger. Just what has she gotten herself into? With men coming and going from the place she works at, she knew something was wrong. Can she trust Milo? Milo seems like a scary guy and is determined to keep Clarice from going to the police. Now who can Clarice trust? I loved how the police turn up at the factory to question Clarice. Her voice is shaky as she tried to compose herself. Can you imagine being surrounded by detectives firing questions at you? The guilt of what she knows is causing her to be physically ill.

Just as I’m settling down into the story, the author throws a curve ball. Oh my I didn’t see this turn of events coming. Now Clarice is in a dilemma . Her world changed with some unexpected news, but not everyone is happy for her. These dangerous men keep getting closer to harming her and the detectives don’t seem to believe her story.

I was very impressed with how Clarice stood up to Mr. Topo. He doesn’t like how Clarice is turning down the completion of his order and there looks like trouble is heading her way. She is in way over her head but she continues to stand up for what is right. I liked how the author incorporated faith in the story and used several people from the Bible to represent how God loves us unconditionally. The ending is written with intensity as Clarice puts her life in danger to help solve the murder.

I will say that Milo is my favorite character because he is a good example of a man who has done many things that were against the law. He thinks that he can’t be saved but when God is shared with him, he begins to realize that he has been forgiven for his sins. I loved how protective he is with Clarice and always puts her safety first. The mystery is solved with the help of several people. I was surprised who the guilty person was and how quickly others tried to distance themselves from this person.

The ending is filled with bullets flying , deceit and corruption revealed and a person who finds redemption. I loved how realistic the story is and how creative the author is in combining faith with flawed characters and watch them make a choice to change their life forever,

MY REVIEW

Christmas at the Crossroads by Eleanor Bertin

This is a nice story about two friends who enjoy spending time with each other. They come from different backgrounds which makes for an interesting turn of events. I am a preacher’s kid and growing up I was always the outsider. Everyone called me goodie two shoes which made me cringe. As we follow

Myra and Susan we start to see a little rebellion creep up. Susan and Myra get caught stealing and causes both girls to face consequences. I liked how the author took Susan on a journey to discover how she could turn away from her rebellious spirit. It was nice to see an adult take time to share God with a teenager. Myra surprised me in her actions yet I understood her so well. Just like Myra I turned away from God thinking I would become popular and wanted to disobey everything I had been taught. Great lesson on what happens when you sin and how you can be redeemed and find Christ.

The Magic of Christmas by Lorna Seilstad

I loved reading how Shayna was so dedicated to her patients. Although one of her patients is the nephew of her ex-boyfriend she gives her all to get him back to where he once was as a football player. You could feel the tension when Dante finds out that Shayna is his nephew’s therapist. He can’t deny that she is doing a great job but he still isn’t comfortable being around her. Someone is holding bitterness towards another and the author draws our attention to it in the story.

When Shayna and Dante have a disagreement about Luca’s care, the tension becomes overwhelming. I was quite surprised at what Shayna confessed to Dante. I can’t imagine having to relearn everything that use to come easy. Shayna knows exactly what obstacles Luca is facing. Can she convince Dante that she is the best occupational therapist for him? I admire Shayna and how her faith has seen her the through the darkest moment in her life. This is a great story about anger and control. Once we learn that we can’t control everything we can let go and let God.

A Single Spark of Light by Sara Davison

Ty has a big uphill battle before him as he is released from prison. Walking along the street and seeing Christmas decorations doesn’t exactly get him in the mood. He has a past that tries to draw him back into that dark hole he doesn’t want to ever visit again. Feeling all alone he starts to think about the gang he use to be in and seems to feel that maybe he could just go back with them til he gets on his feet.

I was riveted to the story as Ty is near the edge of a bridge calling out to God. He feels all alone but soon hears a voice asking if he needs help. Who is this stranger that asks Ty if he needs help and tells him he is a good listener? The story Ty shares with the stranger is hard to read. The many things he had to do to be in the gang was horrible to read. Stealing, setting a fire and taking a life didn’t seem to bother him back then. Now he sees how wrong it was but doesn’t think God will ever forgive him.

The wisdom this stranger shares with Ty reminds us that God forgives us and you can begin a new relationship with Him. It may sound foreign to Ty but he must decide if he wants to be set free from the sins that still causes him to doubt God. I liked how Ty started to see his heart soften as he learned that God was there to help him. I could feel the turmoil he faced and wanted him to let go and trust God. “You can’t change the past, but you can find your way out of the darkness.”

This is a beautiful story of redemption and surrendering to God. Ty may have a journey before him but with God all things are possible. It shows how powerful it is to forgive and be forgiven. I was shocked at who the stranger was that first spoke to Ty on that bridge. Guilt and shame can hold you back, but Ty took a step of faith and took responsibility for everything he had done. We need to remember to give our burdens to God and allow Him to set us free from anything that holds us back from Him.

Reclaiming Tomorrow by Angela D. Meyer

Josie is trying to make a new start but her past may catch up with her. I couldn’t wait to read her story and see what she was running from. Living with her parents has been nice but now Josie is ready to move into her own apartment with her son. She wants to do this on her own but her parents offer to help which makes Josie gets defensive. I think Josie may be dealing with pride and allowing her past to keep her from getting close to anyone.

Daniel is a good character and wants to make Josie comfortable around him. When he shares his past there is a little hesitation on Josie’s part. I liked how open Daniel was and told Josie that he understands that she needs time to trust him. There is a little suspense in this story that gave me chills. Josie has been so careful to keep where she lives a secret. In a blink of an eye her worse fear is standing in front of her as he holds onto her son. You can tell in her voice that she is trembling.

I liked how Josie stood her ground and didn’t let the threat against her make her run away. She has become confident and realizes that she is stronger than she thought. It is a nice Christmas for all as Josie and Daniel see a future together.

Whispered Miracle by Stacy Monson

This story had me crying as I got to know Casey. She has been in foster care for so long that she misses being part of a real family. When her foster mother dies, Casey blames herself. She is bitter, lonely and unsure of her future. When she finds out that her brother is sending her to Outlook Adventure Camp for Christmas she is not happy. All she wants to do is stay at home, feel sorry for herself and cry about the loss of her foster mom who she became very close to.

Being at the camp opens Casey up to what it feels like to belong. Everyone is friendly and shares their story with her. I loved how she began to trust them and start to feel like maybe she finally belonged. With the help of a sweet little dog Casey starts to open up and begin to let all her anger and fear out. I loved the ending and how Christmas for Casey healed her broken heart.

About the Author

Neil Tolsma was born on February 5, 1935, Saddle Brook, NJ. Met his wife, Lenore Merop, at Garfield Community Church (where he had made his profession of Christ as his Savior at the age of 17) and they were married on August 29, 1959. They had both been part of the Billy Graham Choir that introduced the popular hymn, How Great Thou Art, to America the summer of 957. He graduated from Shelton College, Ringwood, NJ, 1962 with A.B. And from Westminster Theological Seminary 1965, B.D./M.Div. Ordained by the Presbytery of the South, Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 1965. Served as pastor of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 1965 to 1974, Falls Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, 1974 until his retirement in 2004. They are the parents of three daughters and 8 grandchildren. Neil is the author of This Is Love: Tracing the Love of God throughout the Biblical Story.

Why Another Book on Love

Walk into any bookstore, Christian or general market, big or small, and you’re sure to be inundated by books on love, both fiction and nonfiction. How to love your spouse or significant other. How to love your children. How to love yourself. Love, love, love. That’s all we seem to hear about today. Love in all its forms, both good and evil.

So, then, why would I write another nonfiction book on love? Aren’t there plenty to choose from already? Well, yes and no. There are many on the shelves. Have your pick. But how many of those talk about what real, biblical love is, why we are to love, and where our one and only source of love is?

So many people today don’t know what love truly is. We have romanticized versions of flowers, chocolates, and violins. We dream of being swept off our feet and spending every waking minute with someone who will cherish us above all else. One of the most popular sayings of the day is Love Is Love.

Is it really? How do we know what true love is? That understanding only comes from God and his word to us. Only through him and in him do we find pure, holy, agape love. Love that sacrificed his only Son for us to give eternal life to us sinners—the impure, unholy, and filthy.

And so that’s why I wrote Love Matters. Because it does. It matters to our lives today, in how we relate to our spouses, our children, our family members, and the world at large. It matters to our eternity in how we view our salvation and how we are to love our Lord. It matters when we’re old and when we’re young, when we’re at home and when we’re at work, when we agree with someone and when we disagree with them.

Throughout my fifty years of in-depth Bible study as a pastor and counselor, I was brought back time and time again to the Bible to discover what love is. Over and over, I returned to the command God gave in Exodus, that we are to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, souls, strength, and minds, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Because God is love and love matters to him, it has to matter to us.

MY REVIEW

When I picked up this book to read, the first thing I thought of was “Jesus loves me.” My heart is happy knowing I am loved by Him. Now I need to share that love with others. We are called to be examples of Christ and show love to everyone. Throughout the book the author gives illustrations where Jesus showed love to others. Do we show love to others even when they don’t? We are to love without question and to love like Jesus loves the church.

I liked how the author reminds us how God loved those he could have turned his back on. Instead of letting Noah drown in the flood, He spared him and therefore showed His love. God illustrates that same kind of love to each of us. He forgives us and loves us unconditionally. He also commands us to love our enemy. That can sometimes be hard when he have been hurt and rejected by someone. There were those in the Bible that rejected God, yet He still loved without ceasing.

This is a great Bible study to go deeper into how important it is to love at all times. The author provides questions at the end of each chapter to use as a study. This would make a great small group Bible study or to use for individual study.

“God’s love is at the foundation of everything. Love really does make the world go ‘round.”

MY REVIEW

I loved this book because of the old time romance feel it had. The days when a gentleman walked a woman home and made sure she arrived safely was nice to read. To be excited to go for a stroll and enjoy the night as the stars twinkle in the sky is just about the perfect ending to a day. Richard and Ruth have been dancing around a relationship for years. Dear Mason has a mission to get these two together and finally admit they love each other.

Richard is my favorite character and he stole my heart right away. He has loved Ruth for so long I felt sorry for him at times . He is always a gentleman who doesn’t want to mess up the friendship he has with Ruth. I think sometimes he walks on egg shells around her simply because he is unsure of himself. Maybe with Mason’s help he will finally tell Ruth how he feels.

Ruth on the other hand has confidence and makes decisions without thought. Well maybe she sometimes does things to irritate her sister but that’s another situation we can’t get into right now. What is holding her back from the charming Richard? Is she having doubts about her feelings or is it because she is a bit shy?

I can’t forget to mention Mason because he truly is the glue that holds this story together. The more time Ruth and Richard spend with him, the more we see how a death has caused him pain for years. It was so beautiful to read how much he loved this person. It is hard for him to have lost the one he loved deeply. You can find him visiting the person’s grave at first but over time he stops going. Perhaps he wants Ruth and Richard to find that kind of love where they are forever committed to each other.

I wasn’t prepared for the ending and ugly cried. Yes I cried for a character who showed me how to forgive and be set free. Through words that were spoken this person was gently lead to Christ. Sometimes a gentle spirit can reach even the most stubborn person. I loved how this illustrated that we can lead someone to know Jesus by our example and words with compassion and grace.
