I am very impressed with this book. The pictures inside are beautiful and tranquil. Each day is a different subject that includes scripture . There is also a question at the end to go deeper in the study. 

The design is well made and easy to take care of. I love that it gives you passages to read and study the Bible with. I found myself wanting to stay on one day for awhile because I didn’t want to rush hearing from God. 

This would make a great gift to anyone who loves devotionals or who wants to study a particular subject they may be struggling with. Make sure you grab a copy for yourself and give one to a friend.

MY REVIEW 

This book can changed lives and set captives free. Yes I believe this book is so powerful that I wept when I finished the last page. I have heard of seeker friendly churches. In fact I used to be part of one. My husband and I were so involved in the church, our children began to wonder if they were important anymore. We sat under a pastor that preached the good news. We felt that we needed to volunteer for everything and be there every time the doors opened. Slowly we noticed our friends leaving and started to ask questions. Well I won’t continue because this book could have been written about my life in a church where I was shunned and asked never to come back. 

Charmaine thought she had it all. She was well respected in the community. She was a big giver to her church and flaunted her wealth to anyone who would notice. Her pastors preached claim it services and in the midst was the Holy Spirit who grieved for the people who were being misled, I loved the moment when the pastor’s  wife was prophesying and suddenly  was called out. A guest pastor from China knew he had to speak truth to these people. He was not  well received and in fact was escorted out. 

I think that was the turning point for Charmaine. Could she go to China and see what the pastor was trying to convey to the congregation at her church? Her journey will fund  herself searching and seeking God for answers. Her pastors will be become upset that she went.  I wonder if they were afraid to her lose money ? The author writes a fiction story but it is happening in churches right now. The feel good churches who share the good news and spend more time on a tithing message than speaking real truth confuses people. The enemy loves confusion and we as a body of Christ need to be careful who we allow to minister to us. I think this is a wake up call for everyone and the author is clear that we don’t want to hear, “I never knew you,” I love a church who digs into scripture and warns us of what happens when we sin. I think every pastor and Christian should read this book. You may not agree with everything but there is truth in the authors story.  I want to know that I’m at church  to develop a closer relationship with him. I need to know that I will speak up when I am being led astray. In the end I want to hear, “well done, thy good and faithful servant.”

About the Author

Born and raised in west Michigan, Sharlene MacLaren attended Spring Arbor University. Upon graduating with an education degree in 1971, she taught second grade for two years, then accepted an invitation to travel internationally for a year with a singing ensemble. After traveling for a year, she returned to her teaching job, then in 1975, she reunited with her childhood sweetheart, and they married that very December. They have raised two lovely daughters, both of whom are now happily married and enjoying their own families. Retired in 2003 after thirty-one years of teaching, Shar loves to read, sing, travel, and spend time with her family—in particular, her adorable grandchildren!

Shar has always enjoyed writing, and her high school classmates eagerly read and passed around her short stories. In the early 2000s, Shar felt God’s call upon her heart to take her writing pleasures a step further, so in 2006, she signed a contract with Whitaker House for her first faith-based novel, Through Every Storm, thereby launching her professional writing career. Faith Haviland swept a few strands of damp hair off her forehead, irritated by how it had escaped the neat bun of this morning. She shoveled more dishes into the sink and set to washing them as fast as possible to prepare for the supper crowd that would soon descend upon Daybreak Diner. It wasn’t a fairytale job by any means, but, alas, it was a job, and many would clamor for it if her Aunt Martha ever hung up a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. Her aunt, who happened to be her father’s younger sister, owned and operated the establishment and often stated her wish for Faith to one day take it over. Faith shuddered at the prospect of telling Martha she’d been entertaining the idea of leaving Columbus. Martha wouldn’t like the news, but Faith couldn’t worry about that. Things had grown too tedious in her hometown, and too many found it their job to remind her of the unfortunate event of her canceled wedding. Add to that the troublesome, if not peculiarly obsessive, behavior of Stuart Porter, and tedious hardly described it. Ever since her fiancé’s departure with her best friend just two weeks before their April 15 wedding day, Mr. Porter had started closing in on her, insisting he would marry her in an instant if she’d simply agree.
For as long as she could recall, the man had outwardly admired her, even though she had done nothing to encourage it. Nothing about him appealed to her. First, he didn’t serve the Lord; second, he was an obsessive drinker; third, he came off as pushy and persistent; and finally, he resembled a goose with his nose sticking out like a beak. Not that looks meant all that much—goodness, she didn’t consider herself any major prize—but it was all the other things thrown in. The man was almost twenty years older than she and widowed to boot. At least, that was the rumor anyway. No one had really known his wife, only that she was there one day and gone the next. Some said she’d died, and others said she’d left him for another man. Whatever the case, it’d been a mysterious event that few knew anything about, and if they did, no one discussed it much, probably mostly from lack of caring.

MY REVIEW 

I absolutely loved this book. It flowed with grace and captivated my attention. What character did I like the most? All of them. Each one had a purpose in the story that fit perfectly like a puzzle piece. I loved the time period and getting a glimpse at a war that was unforgiving. The author does a great job of writing a story that should be turned into a movie. Oh my it would be grand to see Faith and Joey on the big screen. 

Faith is a wonderful person with a pure heart. Her faith is evident and she shares her love for God with everyone. Now I won’t go into details of how she happens to become a wife to Joey because that is something for readers to discover. I will say I wasn’t sure about her decision but I understood why she felt like she needed a change in her life. 

Joey is grieving  the loss of his wife while raising his children alone. He also is a Union Captain in the Civil War. He can’t seem to keep a nanny while he is gone . Perhaps his children are in need  of someone special to come into their lives. I wanted to hug them and tell them they were loved. Faith has her hands full raising them while Joey is away. It would be awkward to be alone with children you barely know and have the full responsibility of caring for them. 

I was excited to see where the author would take Faith and Joey’s relationship. They barely have time to get to know each other before he has to report to duty. There are sone powerful moments when Faith shares God’s Word with Joey. She prays daily for him and trusts that he will find his way back to God. The author illustrates with  several characters how God forgives us. One particular character is mean, deceitful and stands accused of horrible crimes. Yet in the midst of chaos , he finds redemption. It is a beautiful moment in the story that should not be overlooked. 

From an arranged marriage we witness forgiveness, God’s grace and new beginnings. One of the children share a true blessing with everyone that will have you crying. It made me think of the verse, “and a child shall lead them.” The children are a big part of the story and the author demonstrates the emotional toil  a death of a parent has on them. In the bustle of life, they had been left behind to deal with emotions on their own. Faith brings light to them by sharing Jesus. She shows them kindness, understanding and unconditional love. As I end my review I want to mention the string of buttons. It is a cherished tradition that I loved learning about. Don’t miss the significance of this special item as you read the story.

Are You a Romance Reader Like I Am?

Long before I even knew I could write, I loved to read. Being a hopeless romantic I gravitated to all romance stories either contemporary or historical. I soon realized that finding clean fiction but still written with the passion of love that God created humans for, was hard to find. (Just read Song of Solomon, God was not afraid to express passion without being explicit.)

Given the gift of a writing career later in life one thing was for sure…I wanted to write clean romance, with a Godly message, but realistic romance depicting real passion. My favorite theme was an arranged marriage…so birthed the first book of the Shenandoah Brides that has now morphed into a series of 5 sisters and their 5 love stories. February 4th 2020 is launch day for book two called Amelia’s Heartsong. Every six months, another book in the series will be available.

Where-as book one was set in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, post-civil war, Amelia’s story takes place in the big city of Richmond Virginia where balls, debutants, pomp and circumstance matter. Though Amelia has aristocratic roots, she has been raised a farmer’s daughter and has much to learn about the ways of this much different and often unkind world.

However, Amelia is not easily dissuaded, especially when the handsome Bryon Preston comes calling. Born to please with a genteel personality and quick mind she throws herself into this new life, far from the corn fields of the Shenandoah Valley and a recent heart break. Finding love with the goal of being a mother and wife consume her days until…heart break finds her once again. Seems there are those who cannot abide the notion that not all are born into privilege. They demand those lines are clearly drawn and absolute.

Amelia surprises everyone including herself when she finds that she is far more capable than she gave herself credit for. Nursing becomes her new trusty love, one that will not let her down. Will Bryon and Amelia ever find their way back together?

Although this book can easily be read as a stand-alone, if you read book one and wondered what happened to the handsome Colby, there is a surprise awaiting you.

MY Review 

Oh how I have loved this story. I really didn’t want it to end because the characters are so realistic. I felt as if I was back in the late 1860-1870s. I adored Amelia right away and her sweet disposition was so welcoming. The setting was easy to visualize with the author’s images drawn with scenic words. When Amelia decides to move to Richmond to live with her grandparents I could not wait for her adventure to begin. All she has known was farm life, so I knew she was surprised at all the fancy houses and extravagant parties that seemed to happen weekly in her new town.

I liked her grandparents and loved how they supported Amelia as she decides what to do with her future. I think living with her grandparents opened up new opportunities for her and gave her confidence to follow her heart. There is a definite faith element in the story which shows how the characters rely on God to help them make wise decisions. I love a story that allows God to shine and the author has done an excellent job of this. Amelia is a woman who has morals and does not compromise those values. 

It is easy to understand why Amelia liked Bryon. He is a  charming and intelligent gentleman. His family is one of the prestigious members in the town. How sad his mother was such a snob. She is very controlling and does tend to treat Bryon like a child at times. When he introduces Amelia to his family, you could feel a chill in the air. Some people hold grudges forever and Bryon will soon find out that an old long ago hurt still lingers in his mother’s heart. I’ll say that the author really throws a twist in the story with past encounters between Bryon’s mother and Amelia’s grandparents. 

The story follows Amelia as she ventures out to fulfill her dream of being a nurse. The turmoil she faces as she is rejected by Bryon’s mother makes her stronger in the sense that she follows God’s direction for her life.  There is so much to love about this story. From a sweeping romance, secrets and  a lesson on forgiveness the author captures the true meaning of unconditional love.

I didn’t set out to be a writer.  In 1997, I was a practicing nurse-midwife, blessed to have delivered hundreds of babies.  In one day, latex allergy abruptly ended my career, ended my job, and took my health. Seven years of college felt like a waste. At times the grief felt bottomless.

 

My strong faith in God got me through that dark time.  My daily meditation and clinging to God’s Word were by lifelines.  One morning, while reading the second chapter of Exodus, (which I had read many times before) the story of Puah and Shiphrah struck me in a new way.

 

I began asking myself how that came to be.  Why would a pharaoh order his future workforce murdered?  Did all the babies arrive before the midwives could arrive or did the midwives lie? With much research and study and my own experiences as a midwife, the answers to those questions became The Midwife’s Song: A Story of Moses’ Birth.

 

The book started a flood of writing that continues today.  Writing is a creative process and as the Holy Scripture teach, “In the beginning, God created….”  We are told we are made in God’s image.  Thus, we ourselves are destines to create.  For me, it has been quilting, sewing, cooking, and writing.  I also write under the pen name of B. K. Ricotta. Two of a Kind is my first book under that name. A sweet novella will be released soon by Wild Rose Press entitled A Love So Sweetby B. K. Ricotta.  Finally, the finishing touches are being done on a historical romance set in Northwest Florida when it was a new state.

MY REVIEW 

I enjoyed reading about Hannah and her ability as a midwife. She seemed to always be busy and I loved how much care she gave the mothers and  their newborns. Although the book does highlight her as a midwife I found myself more captivated by her wanting a family. 

She thinks she has grown  too old to marry much less have a child. She also is wary because she was deeply hurt and betrayed by a man once before.   Ze-ev is a powerful man who other women in the camp notice. His presence makes Hannah nervous yet she liked to be around him. It was interesting to read how the women were treated in camp. They had very strict rules and if they disobeyed the consequences were unpleasant. It would be difficult to live during this time period as there was danger all around. 

I enjoyed the talks that Hannah and Ze-ev shared. They talked about the promised land and dreamed of raising a family. I wonder when one of them will share their feelings with the other? When the plague comes and takes the lives of those at camp and surrounding area, chaos breaks out. Hannah feels helpless as men lay dying. The story is filled with jealousy, deceit, promises, and love. I enjoyed getting to learn more about Hannah. The story was one that reminds us to forgive and that “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
