I counted my journals, wondering. A drawer filled with thirty-three journals. The years of words held in those pages cover countless seasons of living and following Jesus. Even the gaps of silence speak volumes in the journey.

This passion for writing, evident in that drawer of journals, has had the dream of a book tucked within it.  And, quite by surprise, a book has formed and grown these past years. The Rabbi’s Touch began innocently with the study of Blind Bartimaeus. His miracle took shape in my imagination, taking on sounds, images and emotions.  Notes and reflections about his healing found their way in the current journal. Hidden Greek meanings fed my imagination until I was Bartimaeus meeting Jesus. That encounter took on words that needed to be put down on paper as his story.  Bartimaeus’ story led to another short story, which led to another.  Each story was driven by the desire to enter the lives of those who met Jesus and were healed. Each story was written with the longing to encounter Jesus for myself, as if I had never met Him before. Perhaps I would grow in knowing Him.  And I did.

As the stories grew, so did a quiet desire for others to meet Him as I had. Perhaps others could meet Jesus on their dusty road, make eye contact with Him, hear His voice and feel His healing touch?  Perhaps a conviction of what He can do will grow, and they, too, could be determined to press in to receive what is His to give?  Perhaps they also will cast aside the veil they have been hiding behind and walk free? Perhaps you can meet Him, too?  So, here it is, a collection of first-hand stories, ready for you to encounter Jesus.

MY REVIEW 

As I read the first story I thought about how we scream out for Jesus  to heal us.  Just like the blind man in the story we are desperate for His touch. I loved how the man never wavered from His faith and continued to call out to Him. It is a great reminder for us to never give up and always have faith. 

Each story is an example of healing from Jesus. A touch, a word, a look was all these people wanted to be healed. I like that the author illustrated the stories with no embellishments and was directly from the Bible. It is amazing how many times throughout the Bible we see the healings that Jesus does. Can you imagine what it must have been like as Jesus walked the earth? People rushing to get a glimpse of Him and a touch so they could be healed? I can see them as they push each other aside to get their turn. 

The book is easy to read and very uplifting . I enjoyed reading each story and being encouraged to continue to call out to Jesus at all times. Our faith can waver sometimes, but when we surround ourself with His Word we find hope. This book would make a wonderful gift to anyone who loves to read how Jesus is our healer and savior.

Ever Played Dress-up? 

I’ll bet most of us played “Let’s Pretend” when we were kids. Maybe you dressed up as a princess, or a knight, or a soldier. When we were little, my grandmother had a secondhand wedding dress she let us play with. It had the long train and veil that dragged several feet behind a grown woman. We spent so many fun hours dressing up and pretending. And of course, there were all the times my older brother and I played cowboys as we rode our horses.

With so much experience playing dress-up and “let’s pretend,” I thoroughly enjoyed writing the story of a heroine who pretended to be a man! And not just a fellow around town. She joined up with a group of five Blackfoot braves and attempted to pass herself off as a man for weeks while she lived in their camp, trapping alongside them!

She had a good reason for attempting the ruse, and you can find out if she pulls it off in Faith in the Mountain Valley. This might be my favorite of all the books in the Call of the Rockies series. I pray you enjoy it too!

MY REVIEW 

The author has such a great way of taking you directly into the story as you see the mountains around you. The beauty of the land surrounds you as you watch traps being set. Living out here is hard and dangerous. The weather doesn’t always cooperate and survival is difficult for some. I immediately became engrossed in the story when Colette hides a secret from the men she is traveling with. Everything seemed to be going well until a childhood  friend  discovers her on the trail. How will she convince her friend to keep her secret? Will her emotions draw her close to Jean -Jacque or will she keep her distance from him? 

The details of skinning an animal was good but hard to read. The author always does in-depth research to make her stories historically correct. I love how she gives life  into every word that scatters across the pages that make the story believable. Poor Colette is having a rough time out there in the wilderness and soon she may have her secret exposed. Jean-Jacque is very helpful and tries to make things easier for Colette. I couldn’t wait to find out what she is hiding. 

The journey into the woods becomes dangerous as Colette becomes ill. Her strength is slowly slipping away. I loved her determination to survive as  she calls out to God for help. Her prayers are strong as she asks God to help her. Oh how I enjoyed Jean-Jacque finding her. He is an answer to prayer. His emotions are strong as he cares for Colette . Will she open up to him and share her secret? 

As Colette tries to hide her secret her past starts to catch up with her. Danger  is close by and she knows she needs to flee before she is seen by someone from her past. This part of the story is so well written I was holding my breath as she decides what to do. I loved the lessons on trusting God to give them wisdom and learning to forgive and let  go of the past. I’m sorry to see the story end because it was so beautifully written.

AN UNLIKELY MATCH by BETH WISEMAN

This series is so much fun to read and the characters seem like family now. I adore Esther and Lizzie so much. These two women are full of life and make me laugh. Their schemes to matchmake always gives readers an adventure to read. Wouldn’t it be nice to stay at their Inn?

I loved the plot of this story where a production crew overtakes the Inn and surrounding land. Someone made a mistake when they  accepted  the booking. Oh I laughed so hard when the motor homes pull up with limos following close behind.  The noise of the generators are enough to make you run away. The author does an incredible job of letting us see two characters try to understand each other’s beliefs. 

Evelyn is a sweet quiet and hard working young woman. She has deep faith and her actions show how much she respects her heritage. The Amish have always fascinated me and this story talked about the differences between the Amish  beliefs  and other beliefs. 

Jayce is here with his father to help with the movie but their relationship is strained. His father is very stern and doesn’t seem to want to spend any time repairing his relationship with Jayce. I liked how Evelyn and Jayce became friends. I enjoyed reading how Jayce and Evelyn began to have feelings for each other but Evelyn is not sure she should let her feelings grow for him. They come from different backgrounds and have very deep conversations about God. I thought it was very interesting for them to question each other about what they believed in. There are many religions in the world so I think Jayce was a little confused why Evelyn believed one way when he was never taught that. This part of the story was well written and answered sone questions I have had about the Amish ways.

I cannot leave out my favorite character Gus. He is gruff, standoffish and a loner. I do think he may have a crush on one of the sisters who runs the Inn. I hope this gets more attention in the next book. His unhappiness is explained in the story and I wanted to give him a big hug. All these years he has been sad and now I know why. Don’t miss the excitement when Gus gets a part in the movie. There is a nice surprise about him that will have you respecting him even more. 

I loved this story so much because it shows how two people who are different are willing to listen to each other and follow their heart. Life is too short and they need to live each day in happiness. God is very important to both Evelyn and Jayce. The importance of prayer in the story is prevalent as they each seek God’s wisdom for their future. There is reconciliation, forgiveness and new beginnings that fill the pages of this inspiring story.

“Dressed in black, Lela stretched out of the chair like a panther on the hunt.” Would that sentence entice you to know more about Lela?

 

It worked for me, and I wrote the sentence!

 

Here’s how it all came about. When I outlined the plots for my Stolen Lives Trilogy, I knew that an International Retrieval Organization (IRO) agent mentioned in Book One would became the star in Book Two, and an agent highlighted in Book Two would take the lead in Book Three.

 

I first ‘met’ Lela Ortiz two-thirds of the way into writing Weep in the Night, Book One in the trilogy. She was a minor character, a proficient agent, but serious and quiet. Up until that point, I still hadn’t decided which agent would go on to fame in the next book. However, when I wrote the sentence already quoted, I knew Lela was my gal.

 

Ooh. I fell in love with that description of her and had to delve into her backstory. Why was she so serious? What happened in her past to make her such a good agent? At first, I decided she was an orphan, but she ‘informed’ me she had a loving family. Scratch that idea. If her troubles didn’t stem from her immediate family, where did they originate?

 

Quite often a character will ‘give’ me details during a conversation with another member of the cast. My plan might be for the plot to veer left, then lo and behold, the character will say something that takes the story in a completely different direction. This may sound strange to some readers, but believe me, many authors will agree that if your character isn’t ‘talking’ to you, maybe it’s because you’re taking them in the wrong direction. Lela certainly did that with me. And I think her story is so much richer and deeper than the one I’d originally planned.

 

After you read about her life before becoming an agent, you’ll understand her desire to help people, and why her boss holds her in high regard.

MY REVIEW 

This has been a very intriguing story. I loved Lela and her strong desire to help others. The organization she works for does amazing work on helping find people who have been kidnapped. I thought this was a brilliant part of the story where Lela shined at her job. Her instincts are spot on and she is very determined to follow leads. There is something from her past that has affected her but she tries to hide the scars that will never go away. 

Jay is a good character and helps Lela find out why his brother-in-law Chuck has been kidnapped. As they  start to investigate they  find clues that may help them figure out why Chuck has been kidnapped. I liked the twists in the story and how the author has two characters working together that hide emotional scars. I think for me their budding friendship was refreshing and gave readers a little background on each of them. Jay is a little timid around Lela because he doesn’t want to get hurt. Lela doesn’t want to let Jay in because she has trust issues. 

I loved how the author kept the story interesting by incorporating another mystery in the book. This part of the story is genius and allows the author to show her creativity. The way she ties the two mysteries together is very intriguing and kept me on my toes. Lela has her hands full with two investigations, a past she needs to deal with and a man she may be falling for. I loved the  faith element in the book and liked how Jay shared Jesus with Lela. It gives her much to think about as she starts to allow God to help her heal from her past. 

Get ready for action and suspense  in this story where  the kidnapped victim gives clues in video taped messages. The author included a child who has Fragile X Syndrome. I learned a little about this disorder as the author introduces us to Chuck’s son. The child is able to communicate by sign language and pictures. This will become a  very important part of the story as video messages are sent to the family. Overall the story is well written and characters are developed enough that you become invested in them. If you are looking for a clean suspense story this one is for you.

I am not artistic. I’m not someone who can look at a space, or an item and see it’s potential. If you give me white space, I will have no idea what to fill it with. Even if I had an idea of what I wanted it to look like, there is no way I could make it look like the picture in my head. My stick figures have always been lop-sided.

What I am pretty good at is making up stories in my head. At restaurants I enjoy observing other customers and giving them stories. In the grocery store I consider what a post-apocalyptic shopping experience might look like. On my drive home I might imagine the lives of the occupants in any given house I pass.

It became a hobby when I slowly began to write these stories down. If I considered a particularly interesting character the natural progression was to wonder what their story was. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into an obsession. Often times I consider myself a citizen of the world in my head more than reality (which has it’s pros and cons). I spent a lot of time quietly working on my stories, trying to become a better writer and honing my craft.

As an avid reader from a young age, I can’t count the characters that have influenced my life and the stories that have touched my heart. My deepest hope is to use my predilection for make believe to touch someone else’s life. That maybe a young girl would be positively influenced by one of my characters.

MY REVIEW 

Well I have to start by saying right away I had a problem with the book. Brittany is taking to her son discussing if he has a dad . She says, “no you do not have a daddy.” Hmm. The kid does have a daddy maybe just not living with them. This was a very concerning answer to give a small child. 

One of the big problems I have with Brittany is that she overthinks everything. A new neighbor moved in. He is hot and we all know it because that is all she talks about. Then she starts obsessing about what if Matt and her son grow  close and things don’t work out between him and her. The great thing about Matt is he is a nice guy. A really down to earth nice guy. So can I tell Brittany to stop everything and just live? Don’t worry about the  what  ifs but live for now

The best part of the book for me was getting to meet Lilly. What a wonderful character. She teaches her cousin Brittany a few lessons that we could all benefit from. Enjoy life, make each day count and smile. We forget sometimes that time has slipped by and we have lost touch with a family member or friend. This book reminds us to not let another day pass without reaching out to that person and rekindle that relationship.
